Grandfather passed away without leaving passwords. Need advice Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:23 PM PST My grandfather owned a 13" MacBook Pro Retina, and didn't leave his passwords behind. We are in the process of going through his things, and we are attempting to get into his data, but specifically his user account and Keychain. We got Apple to walk us through adding a new admin account to the machine by booting to recovery, and reactivating the first-time setup utility. That will get us access to his files, which is a big step forward, but our focus is getting access to as many of his online accounts as possible. This is why we're focusing on the Keychain. Currently, the machine is making a full backup to an external drive. After that is complete, I'd like to try getting into the Keychain, but I'm not sure what options are available to me without having the original password. Is there any way to get into a Keychain without having the password? [link] [comments] |
As an American living in Germany because of work, this really bugs me! Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:24 PM PST If All my Apple Devices Support Siri in English, why does my Apple TV, not? I cant just change stores since i would loose my thousands of Songs on iTunes and my 8000+ Library on Apple Music, so that is not an option. Does anybody know any way around this, so i can by any means, use Siri on my Apple TV while staying in the German App Store? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2019 06:13 PM PST Hello! I need some advice here. Last night, my iPhone X randomly turned off and then tried to restart on it's own. It got stuck on the apple logo startupscreen and shut off again, only to loop this process over and over all night. I finally tried the hard reset where you press volume up down then hold power to restart again, which got me to the plug into itunes page. Then, when i connected it to the computer it didn't show up. brought it to the apple store and the guy couldn't do anything to fix it, saying that "there must be something wrong with the lightning port because it isn't showing up." He then told me that it was out of warranty (by like 2 months, got it November last year) and that the only solution was to buy another. I asked him why my $1000 phone wasn't working when I had only had it for a year, and I had to leave before I yelled in his face when he told me that "that was just the nature of technology" and again, tried to sell me a new phone. Just want to know if theres anything else i can do that doesn't involve spending like $500 on another phone. Is this a common bug? Is there a way to get this repaired? Anything I haven't tried? Also does anyone have any luck with getting apple to help with this type of thing? Thanks in advance, I'm hoping to hear back about some jobs soon so I need to get this situation justified ASAP [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:58 AM PST Looking for a replacement of an old laptop I was using as a desktop. The ultra portable design of the Mac Mini immediately drew my attention. Seems like the specs are good enough for my general use. However, I'm concerned about something I read online that you cannot upgrade some of the hardware like RAM, because it's soldered into the motherboard. Is this true? I was going to buy a basic model from Micro Center with 8GB of RAM, and just upgrade the RAM at a later date for cheaper than you can on Apple's build-it website. But this doesn't seem like an option. Any truth to this? Is this an otherwise decent machine for basic computing tasks? I'd buy a Windows PC or Chromebook, but I've been steadily buying in to the Apple ecosystem. This would accompany my iPhone 8, iPad Air 2, 2018 Macbook Pro 13", and Apple Watch. Worth it? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:16 PM PST Every time I type "It" or "Ut", my phone changes the word to "Vagina". I can't find anything online to solve this. Can someone help? [link] [comments] |
iPad won’t update. Help please! Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:39 PM PST I haven't used my iPad in quite some time. It wants to update to iOS 10.3.3. When I click "Install Now" the loading circle will spin for maybe half a second and nothing happens. I've tried to hard reset. I even did a factory reset. Nothing is working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Oh and I have 53.7 GB available in storage. I also don't have a computer to manually update through iTunes. [link] [comments] |
Can I change the email address associated with my Apple ID login? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:33 PM PST Hi everyone, I'm new to this sub and I appreciate in advance any information you can provide. My internet searches have only confused me. My Apple ID user account name is my Gmail address. I created a new iCloud.com email address. I believe it asked if I wanted to create a new Apple ID and I think I said Yes. Is it possible to change my Apple ID login username to my iCloud.com email address instead of my Gmail? Would it be possible if I had said not to create a new Apple ID? Thanks again [link] [comments] |
If I delete files from one device, will it delete them from all icloud devices? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:30 PM PST Just as the title says I have a computer that I want to free up space on. It used to be used for work and now isn't, but it still has many documents and files that are important. These are saved on icloud, and on the computer now used for work. I am worried that if these files are deleted from this computer, they will be deleted from icloud. Any help? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:31 PM PST So my friend got an iPhone 6 from her uncle and wanted to reset it to use her account, thing is the account got blocked and it asks for verification but when pressing verify it says it expired. She tried to re-send the verification email but couldn't logg in because the security questions said they were wrong, tried to reset the security questions but it said "too many attempts". Should she just wait till like tomorrow and try to reset the security questions to re-send the verification email? [link] [comments] |
Finally getting around to setting up Family Sharing / Screen Time...and I need help Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:43 PM PST Here's the current situation:
Here's what I want to do:
Here are some concerns:
From reading online and talking to Apple help on the phone, I am not sure of how to proceed. So far, the best advice that I've gotten from Apple help is regarding my 16 y/o's phone, and it's to download all of her photos from icloud.com, get her a new Apple ID and live with the fact that it wipes out everything on her phone, reupload all her pictures to icloud.com, and redownload them to her phone. And we didn't even cover the process for doing it for the other phones. What I'd LOVE to do is to be able to say, "This device now belongs to my child. I want him/her to keep all of the info that is already on here. The new Apple ID is xxx@xxx--please use this going forward." But instead, this looks like a multi-hour boondoggle for each device. Is that accurate? Is there any way I can meet my objectives less painfully? Also, I am sure that my scenario is more or less the same scenario that hundreds of thousands or millions of other users have faced; has anyone else solved this in an efficient or pain-free manner? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:52 PM PST Basically, I don't receive notifications at all for some apps (such as getting messaged on discord or getting whispered (also messaged) on twitch sometimes I leave the little silent thing on silent but I'm not totally sure if that's the sole cause. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Macbook works if i punch near the Mag safe charger area? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:41 PM PST Ok so I have a MacBook pro mid 2012 that decides by itself when it wants to function and not function. Sometimes I get a week of usage then it shuts down and wont turn on regardless of SMC reset or removing battery and plugging in the charger and trying to turn on. But for the last two times this happened I would punch by the corner of the keyboard near the charger area and it causes it to power up. This is so weird and Im assuming something must be wrong with the charging area? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:41 PM PST Hi everyone! I tried updating my 2013 MBP to the latest Mojave. As it was finishing up, it stopped working (I don't remember exactly what happened). Regardless, I've ran diagnostics, which shows everything is fine. However, when I'm in the disc utility it won't even recognize the hard drive. Any advice? I'm a little bummed I can't get it. Thank you all! [link] [comments] |
Can a Mac user please help a Windows user out? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:30 PM PST Hey guys, can somebody please help me? I need to convert imoviemobile to a video file, but don't have access to a Mac, only PC. It's a 1.5gb iMoviemobile project file created with an iPhone but seems to stall every time the "export to camera roll" option is selected. I actually left it running for 18 hours but the progress bar won't budge. But I was able to export it as a project file, hence the .imoviemobile extension. I was thinking maybe if someone could please render the project with their iMovie on Mac and send me the finished .mov file, that'd be great. I only have a Windows PC. It's just a family reunion video during the holidays. [link] [comments] |

Why is my cursor black/orange after waking up from sleep mode? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:22 AM PST As you can see https://i.imgur.com/qTDfHN8.jpg the cursor has this strange color when I open my MacBook Pro 2017. When I move the cursor, it changes to the mormal black/white colors. Is this happening for anyone else? How can I fix this? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
iMessage stuck on "waiting for activation" Posted: 02 Jan 2019 07:24 PM PST So I've been happily using my iPhone 7 Plus on iOS 10.2 for years and everything was working fine. Recently, about a month ago, my iMessages stopped working. I tried turning iMessage/FaceTime on and off, restarting my phone... etc and nothing works. Even when I try the "use your Apple ID for iMessage" and sign in, I get an error saying "unable to contact the iMessage server, please try again" after a minute or two of waiting. It does however, seem to work on my iPad Air 2 running iOS 12.1. I had it on iOS 10.3.3 for a long time until my sister updated it (around the same time my iMessage stopped working). I have tried contacting Apple and all the guy could tell me to do was update my iPhone even though I was strongly against it. He mentioned something about iMessage having its own "app" version and it probably coming to the point where it no longer supports my phone's software version. Can anyone please provide any insight on this issue? [link] [comments] |
FYI "Do not disturb" prevents calendar alerts on OS X Posted: 02 Jan 2019 07:06 PM PST I just missed an important
(MacBook Pro, Mojave 10.14.2) Edit 1: This is incorrect. I was conflating alerts and alarms, because they are functionally identical. Apple chooses to arbitrarily distinguish them because of a poor understanding of how they function from the user perspective. [link] [comments] |
Help me make the "Save space by optimizing storage" notification go the hell away. Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:05 AM PST I have 7gb/120gb left on my machine. I dual booted linux. And it's very unlikely that I will be using up the 7gb remaining. How the hell do I make this message go away for good? This all started since I updated to Mojave. And honestly if I didn't need mac for a handful of things I'd probably go all in linux at this point out of spite. One notification, fine, multiple notifications? GTFO. Thanks in advance for your help. Fwiw, I've already tried this and it didn't work: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/254485/silencing-your-disk-is-almost-full-notification [link] [comments] |
Can MS Office 2008 work on Mojave? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 06:42 PM PST I have MS Office 2008 (yes, I should've upgraded that sooner) and I use it all the time on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro. Office 2019 may be incompatible with my current El Capitan OS (if you haven't guessed, I have a nasty procrastination habit) and Office 2016 is proving hard to find. If I were to upgrade to OSX Mojave, would MS Office 2008 still work on it? That way I can hold tight until I can acquire Office 2019. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2019 06:37 PM PST I am unable to download the Australian female voice for Siri. I've been trying the British voice and love it, so I thought I'd try the Australian one. For some reason when I hit it, it just says "downloading" but the percentage never rises above 0%. I'm on an XS Max with 256 GB storage...new phone so it's nowhere near capacity. I just checked and the South African and Irish do the same. Do indeed to delete the American and/or the British download to make room or something? [link] [comments] |
Thinking About Purchasing a Mac Mini but Need some advice! Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:59 PM PST So my PC is dying and I'm already in the Apple ecosystem so I've been looking at the latest Mac Mini. All I really want is a computer that can stream on twitch (but not play games on it) but also edit videos through Final Cut/Adobe Premier. Is the Mac Mini for me and if so what upgrades should I get while being cost effective? i.e not selling a kidney for a fully decked out Mac Mini. [link] [comments] |
Brand new IPhoneXs touch partially unresponsive Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:56 AM PST I got my Xs from the Apple store last week, and it's had touch issues for the last few days where parts of the touchscreen wouldn't work. Today I try to unlock my phone and voila, parts of the bottom half of the touch screen doesn't respond to contact. For example, the bottom half of the password keyboard (7, 8, 9, and 0 keys) doesn't work, while the Emergency and Delete keys, located even more below the password keys, work perfectly fine. I tried restarting it, nothing. I don't have AppleCare+, can this be covered by the default factory warranty? There isn't a single crack or scratch on this thing either. [link] [comments] |
iMessage automatically reading without using app Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:16 PM PST Hi there So this started on its own a week or two ago. Whenever I send a message to my friend - it automatically is marked as read and the notification pops up, then goes away, without any interaction. There is also no red-bubble notification on the app and the thread has no blue-bubble marking it as unread. This also happens if I send it as a SMS and not a iMessage too. Very odd. Any thoughts? I have tried resetting all my setttings - and my friend only has this issue with my texts. Group iMessages are fine. Other people messages are fine. It's just with my texts/iMessages. Thanks!!!! Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:12 PM PST Hello. Hope I can find the answer here. Broke up with my ex a few years ago and we lived together. We shared my laptop, so she had her own user account and had a bunch of personal files on it (music, pics, etc.) We're still on good terms though, so just want to get her stuff off my laptop because I bought a new MBP and will need to wipe this one. Is there some way I can take all her stuff off and put it on an external HD or something and she can open it on a separate computer? I am the admin on the computer, but I don't have her password. Would be nice to have a way to just bundle up her stuff and hand it off to her. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
