Apple charged me £25 for a battery replacement and didn't even bother to actually swap it. Posted: 06 Jan 2019 07:32 AM PST So I took my iPhone 6S into the Leeds, UK Apple Store to have my battery replaced while the £25 offer was still running (ended 31 Dec 2018). They took my phone, I waited about 3 hours (it was busy near the Christmas holidays) and returned and paid for the service. The chap came out and gave me my phone back. It was fully charged (not how I'd left it) so I left assuming the service had been successful. I got a confirmation email stating the battery had been installed and it even listed its serial number (Replacement Serial No: F5D818592FTG5NYBS). Proof: After the following day I realised my battery performance hadn't improved at all so I began to investigate. I used 3uTools to investigate the battery. A screenshot of what I found is at the link below: It clearly states the batter has experienced more than 600+ charge cycles and the serial number does not match the replacement part serial number that I was emailed. iOS 12 also reports that "Battery Health" (in Settings) is 82% (which lines up with the over 500 cycles). So basically Apple have charged me £25 and a 3 hour wait for absolutely nothing. Apple online support have just advised me to "go back into store". Something that isn't that ideal when you live over 2 hours away. Not really sure what the point of this post was. Just a bit annoyed that I've literally been scammed and if i wasn't tech savvy enough to investigate, I'd have never have known. It makes me wonder if this was a genuine mistake or they often do this when it's "busy" in store. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |

What Apple product DON'T you have? Why not? Posted: 06 Jan 2019 08:34 PM PST I don't have a Homepod because it's too expensive and Siri refuses to understand me on any device except the Apple TV. Also don't have an iMac because I have a MacBook. Edit: Totally didn't consider Beats, don't have those right now but I want a pair of Studio 3s. Hitting up the pawn shops soon. [link] [comments] |
Maybe it's time for Apple to really get "back to the mac"? Posted: 06 Jan 2019 03:34 PM PST I think we can all get close to agreeing that we're near peak iPhone. The market is very saturated. Other smart phone makers are starting to feel the same pinch. The economy is just not the same during the 2007-2017 ridiculous peak of iPhone growth. Perhaps this is the time to move their original core business back into focus. Time to go "Back to the Mac" -- Return the mac to its full glory when we all loved this machine. Even bring the iPad into the mix to create the truly portable machine that we all want! [link] [comments] |
Possible changes to Apple Music availability going forward. Posted: 06 Jan 2019 03:58 PM PST Has anyone noticed recently that certain tracks have disappeared from their Apple Music Library? Before you ready your downvotes though, I want to note that I'm perfectly aware that this generally happens from time to time due to copyright and licensing changes, but I think I've spotted a pattern with this latest wave of removals. Generally when a title had been pulled in the past, it had been removed in all forms from the platform along with any accompanying works (e.g. in an album). However this time around, I started to notice that only particular tracks from certain albums and/or EPs were missing. I got curious and decided to check on iTunes, and as it turns out, the newly missing tracks correspond to tracks available there through "album purchase only". Is this indicative of a new direction for the platform in an attempt to push iTunes album sales? (It wouldn't appear so due to the lack of advertising.) Or could this be just be a case of some big label wanting to do the same to promote some other channel? Of course this might just be much ado about nothing. These are after all the sort of things we have to deal with when we choose to rent rather than purchase our media. PS. Mods, if this isn't the right place to speculate about such things, feel free to remove this post and redirect it somewhere else. [link] [comments] |
Lost my iPhone. I’m safe right? Posted: 06 Jan 2019 05:20 PM PST Lost my iPhone on the other side of my country (don't ask) and am back home now with a new phone. The phone has been offline for a few days after they turned it off when I kept calling it and pinging it after tracking it to a building. While it's in lost mode there is essentially no way for them to get into it right? From my understanding they just have a paper weight now. Not sure why I'm asking cuz there's nothing I can do either way at this point but whatever I'd still like to know. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jan 2019 04:06 AM PST I've had the Series 4 for quite some time now and generally talkin on the watch did give me a much more pleasant experience compared to my series 2 but nothing too significant my ear could notice except the loudness. Now I was listening to a podcast and one song caught my attention and I wanted to find out more on it. I usually have my S9 with me and I use shazam on that to get all the song info. Now I did not had the S9 with me but suddenly remembered that there's Shazam installed on my watch (never used it tho :p) So i Shazam the song and get the info, there's this small play button which I press and the song starts playing, I thought the way watch works with music the song would play on my iPhone so I started opening the Apple Music app to see there's nothing playing on it. It was then when I realized the song was being played on my watch! God the bass, clarity and loudness was so good I didn't even realize it was playing on my watch and not on the iPhone. 🙈 Tldr - great job on the speakers by the engineers, be it on the watch or iPhone! My watch probably has one of the better speakers of all the androids I've owned in my life. Just wish Apple would really open up WatchOS more to allow music playback on the watch! [link] [comments] |

sooo, is spark mail still sketchy? Posted: 06 Jan 2019 09:40 AM PST Looking for a new mac email client and i saw a ton of privacy concerns posts here in 2017... how is spark mail now? [link] [comments] |
[MBP] Logic board most likely dead, how screwed am I? Posted: 06 Jan 2019 09:51 PM PST I'm using a 2017 MBP (13inch, no touchbar, Model A1708) and this morning while I was working the whole thing died, tried to power on and no response, tried to reset the SMC and nothing, no sound, heat, or lights when I hit the power button with power cord in or not. I often create backups but haven't done so since about Christmas - how much have I lost if the logic board's died? I know some MBP's have the logic board connected directly to the SSD but I can't find any confirmation if that's the case with my model, I've done a fair bit of design work that I've resigned myself to losing but would love to recover if possible. Also, I'm about 14 days away from the end of my warranty, what sort of out-of-pocket costs am I looking at? I don't have AppleCare+ unfortunately. Based in Australia. [link] [comments] |
Psa: there is nothing special about Spark email’s privacy policy Posted: 06 Jan 2019 02:57 PM PST Tldr: there is a security risk to third party apps, but they all have it, not just spark. And also that the risk is higher if oauth isn't used. But outlook, airmail et al also store credentials on servers. This is a rrquirement if an app does push notifications on ios. So there's nothing unique about Soark's practices, and they've been unfairly singled out. The stock mail app is safest. I personally use spark and another third party app. I use gmail and I'm comfortable with their oauth security.A couple years ago, someone made a post in /r/privacy about Spark. As best I can tell, the OP read boilerplate terms, didn't understand them, freaked out, and posted about it. Every now and again, someone finds this /r/privacy post, freaks out, and posts about it here. Here's one example from today. The discussion is generally the blind leading the blind, referencing only rumour. So, I thought I would refer to the original post and explain why it isn't bad. Original post: Tldr of original post concerns (annotated): https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/5grsan/do_not_use_the_spark_email_client_by_readdle/ Here's the thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/5grsan/do_not_use_the_spark_email_client_by_readdle/ And the tldr concerns. I'll annotate.
The two replies here (Which are top of the thread) both explain that Spark's practices are normal and harmless: https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/5grsan/do_not_use_the_spark_email_client_by_readdle/daw6obi/ ————————— I looked into this before using Spark. As best I can tell there is NOTHING else on the internet suggesting anything bad about Spark. Basically an uninformed post got popular and has been the basis of misunderstanding and hearsay ever since. My hope in writing this is that people will at least have something to reference the next time this comes up. If I've gotten anything wrong, please let me know in the comments. I should note that the privacy policy changed since the post was made, so maybe thry did simething else before. But the concerns listed seem groundless. The current privacy policy has nothing objectionable in it. [link] [comments] |
[Idea] Surface Pro-like Metal backplate for iPad Pro Posted: 06 Jan 2019 05:25 PM PST Who else would buy a metal backplate that attaches to the back of the newest iPad Pro that functions like the surface pro does? The iPad Pro now has a flat backside and strong magnets, there's no reason why something like this couldn't exist now! I'd buy one if it didn't contribute too much weight [link] [comments] |

Why the immense discrepancy in the butterfly keyboard user experience? Posted: 06 Jan 2019 02:20 PM PST Reading a lot and hearing a lot from people I know who have Macs about very different experiences with the new butterfly switches. People with the second gen who haven't had problems, people online who say the 3rd generation fixed the problem, others who beg to differ, others who say they've replaced their keyboards three times despite wiping off dust regularly. Is their something about the production process that cannot build reliable quality keyboards, i.e. are keyboards between devices inherently different because the technology/manufacturing process is not at the level to reliably produce long term functional keyboards? Right now it's really puzzling to me how people have had such contrasting experiences with the keyboards regarding reliability. Surprisingly anyone I know personally who I've asked about the keyboard hasn't had problems yet *touch wood*. [link] [comments] |
Anyone using a 38" 3840x1600 Ultrawide with their mac? Whats it like? Posted: 06 Jan 2019 09:08 AM PST I'm getting rid of my Ultrafine 5K as its still buggy, especially in Mojave 10.14.2. I'm looking at the Dell Ultrasharp 38, anyone using something similar that can comment on scaling, quality, text sharpness etc? [link] [comments] |

Anyone able to save Memoji to camera roll? Posted: 06 Jan 2019 09:04 PM PST I want to save my Memoji to my camera roll to use in profile pictures and contact photos. Seems like we can only save videos though, meaning if I crop it won't be transparent. Has anyone seen a way? [link] [comments] |
Dictation Success: Homonyms: “Lyft” vs “Lift” Posted: 06 Jan 2019 08:52 AM PST Background
SubstanceI dictated ... ... and, to my delight, the transcription was ... January to March: grocery stores .., with capitalization of the proper nouns and the context-correct interpretation of the lift/Lyft homonym. What other examples of correct disambiguation have you noticed? [link] [comments] |
