I currently have a 2016 12-inch MacBook and have liked it. I was just going to go ahead and, sans research, upgrade to the 2018 model...until I read it has a mobile processor/the processor of a smartphone which, unless I'm mistaken, is terrible for a laptop. My current model may also have that and I was not aware of it at the time — I'm not sure.

I was looking at the 2018 Air but the brightness level really bothers me — I don't think I should have to turn it all of the way up to have a bright screen.

I'm leaning towards the base 13-inch Pro because of my understanding that it is still pretty powerful, despite being only the entry model.

So...am I mistaken? Even my current MacBook's brightness level leaves a lot to be desired but, being my first MacBook, was okay at the time. I also found it snappy, but it seems to have slowed down, which may or may not be my fault — to some degree, anyway. I'd seriously consider the 2018 Air if it had a better brightness level. The 13-inch Pro, even the entry level model, is just so pricey.

How I Saved My Apparently Failing Mid-2010 MacBook Pro

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 10:47 AM PST

TL;DR: I tore apart my MBP, cleaned it all out, and may have fixed two long-standing problems I've had. Pictures of some of the process are here: https://imgur.com/gallery/1imDjVz?s=sms

I bought my MBP in the tail end of 2010, and it served me faithfully for several years with zero issues, and this despite it not getting taken care of as well as I would've liked. To wit, I most often use my MBP while sitting at the couch with it resting on the arm of the couch, but for a year or so, I had a couch with arms slanted just enough that the computer fell and slammed down on the floor numerous times.

Still, it wouldn't develop any issues until within the past couple of years. The first issue was that the computer would sporadically and spontaneously restart "because of a problem," which my limited MBP troubleshooting led me to believe that it was an issue with the graphics switcher, which I learned was a known problem with my model of MBP that had a repair program and everything... which had conveniently ended right as I was figuring out my problem.

Eventually, I learned of GfxCardStatus and would keep my computer set to "integrated only," which at least mitigated the crashing.

The second and more recent problem was that every few moments, just about everything on screen would freeze for five to ten seconds. I could move the mouse cursor, but I couldn't interact with anything, nor would video or animation play. After the few seconds were up, everything would catch up again -- if I clicked something while it was frozen, the results of the click would show up afterward. If I typed, everything I typed would be there and so on. I had no idea what was causing that issue, but I did notice that whenever it was frozen, the HDD would make the same sounds like it was trying to read something. Identical, every time.

So anyway, I decided to tear apart my MBP yesterday. My only goal here was to replace the thermal paste on the processor, which I had recently done to my aging PS3 and thought that I should do the same for my computer too. (I used Arctic MX-4, which is a good 8 year+, non-curing paste.)

Being a bit overzealous, I removed more from the innards of the system than I needed to, such as the disk drive and the Airport card. I also decided in the middle of it that I would replace my hard drive (a 500GB 5200RPM drive that was original to the system) with the one I pulled out of my PS3 (a 1TB 5200RPM drive) a week ago.

Doing the teardown, I noticed a few bits of broken plastic here and there -- no doubt from when it was dropped so many times ages ago -- and also that the fans and heat sinks were extremely dusty. I'm impressed that the system turned on at all without suffering a heat death!

Replacing the thermal paste was a simple process once I made it down to that part of the system, with three tiny dollops being all that was needed to ensure even coverage on the graphics card and CPU.

While putting it all back together, I broke a tiny little peg on the Airport card and started panicking that I wouldn't have WiFi. So in the absence of any way to actually repair this bit to hold the wire in place, I ... used school glue and scotch tape to hold it in place as best as possible. Brilliant, I know.

I also went ahead and replaced the hard drive (I had made a Time Machine backup prior to opening my computer).

Getting everything sealed back up again, I pressed the power button and was greeted with the flashing "?" on a folder icon. Of course! I had forgotten to boot into recovery (hold Command-R after the start-up chime).

Three and a half hours later, everything was working! That Internet recovery took forever but at least confirmed that I still had WiFi, and restoring from my Time Machine was a painfully slow process. I envy you USB 3 and SDD users!

I went through and tested as much as I could once everything was up and running again, and I noticed that I may not have hooked the optical drive up correctly (or at all?) as the computer wasn't seeing it. No big loss; I rarely used it.

BUT the computer no longer freezes every few moments! And so far, I've not experienced any crashes (even without GfxCardStatus), which before were a regular experience. I guess my problems were being caused by a failing HDD and an overheating graphics card?

As much as I want to replace this computer with something that isn't quite as ancient, it still works incredibly well for what I need it to -- managing my photos, occasional video editing, web design, and lite gaming -- so I hope I extended its life by another few years.

It's just too bad that macOS is no longer officially supporting the thing anymore.

Edit: Removed line about a messed up Thunderbolt port. I mistook its listing in System Profiler as an indication that it really existed, but what I was thinking was Thunderbolt was the Firewire port on the side. Whoops. Thanks u/smackythefrog for catching this mistake.

Where is the best place to sell your Mac?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 02:19 PM PST

I bought a really high-end mac, and I honestly couldn't get used to the os after a few months of use and went back to windows. I know that apple will buy it back but they only offer store credit.

    Best MacBook model for me

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 12:34 PM PST

I'm a student looking to make a possible investment in a MacBook. Uses for the laptop would primarily be for word processing, research/casual browsing, emails, Netflixing and possible video/photo editing? lol Just wondering which model would be the best to consider investing in or if there are any other laptop recommendations you guys have to suit my criteria (: thanks!

    Macbook Pro 2017 (13') Heating???

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 07:52 PM PST

    Hi Fam,

I have the macbook pro 2017 (entry model but upgraded ram and storage). I realised that the mac heats up/ warms with even light use such as browsing and video watching. Compared to my previous old mac (macbook air), I never had a serious heating issue. Is this due to the software/macosx? Mine is currently running the high sierra. Will upgrading to Mojave or downgrading to sierra (dunno if it is possible) solve this heating issue? Many thanks!

2017 macbook pro non tb battery

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 12:33 PM PST

Hey I just got my new MacBook the other day and I only used it for only like 5 hours so far but I was wondering if there's anything wrong with my battery. I charged it to 100% right out the box and it didn't really take that long to do that (it said 2 hours until full charge but it definitely wasn't 2 hours). When I was browsing/watching YouTube it depleted probably 1% every 3-4 minutes. Is this regular? Maybe it's because it's new and it'll fix as time goes on? I'm using safari as well

Also, how do I take care of the battery and should I care about the number of cycles I do because this laptop will mostly be mobile for me to take to classes and libraries.

    I can't delete apps

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 12:22 PM PST

I have the macbook air 2018 with the latest updates but I can not uninstall the apps. I have 8 applications that I deleted from the finder, but they continue to appear with a question mark in the launchpad. If I delete them with the cross it does not work, and if I delete them by putting them in the trash it reappears soon after. I also have Chromium and Opera which I would like to get rid of, but I can not put them in the trash, the cross is not available and they do not appear in the finder.

MacBook Pro 2018 - too soft?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 09:38 AM PST

    Hello.

I've bought my MacBook Pro on Thursday. Used it once after unboxed, on clean desk. Next day I took it to uni, but I didn't even took it out of a sleeve whole day. When I got home and wanted to finish my work, I saw small nick on its edge. Im using soft sleeve with lip around the zipper. It really pissed my off, but...

I finished my work (clean desk again) and saw another nick, now on its back, where top and bottom meets.

I dont know how it happend, especially second nick. I'm fuc**** mad about it.

Now I'm too woried to even use it in my house, dont even think about getting it outside.

Is this possible that my model has factory defect or something? Its TOO fragile and soft.

Very dissapointed with this build quality...

    Macbook Pro 2015 Battery

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 12:41 AM PST

    Hi,

I've had my MacBook Pro since it first came out, online has said that the battery can be replaced but is incredibly difficult as it is soldered on to the motherboard. It has 606 cycles on it, but is now starting to last only a few hours before needing to charge again. Would you recommend getting a new laptop or just try and see if someone will replace the battery. Keep in mind there is no Apple Store in New Zealand
