That time back in the 90s, when Apple had me send them porn.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 12:11 PM PST

Here's a blast from the past story.

Back in the 90s I had a PowerMac G4 400 MHz tower. And video streaming wasn't a thing. We use to have to download our "adult content" from FTP sites or other services such as Hotline and watch local. (Anyone remember Hotline?)

Well, I downloaded one specific file, and I COULD NOT get QuickTime to plat the file, no matter what I did. The file was encoded in a codec called Intel Indeo, and Indeo support for QuickTime back them was new. The file played just fine in Windows Media Player on my Windows PC.

So, I went to Apple's site and use the contact form to send them an email that I am having Intel Indeo codec issues.

To my surprise, someone from Apple's QuickTime team emailed me back about an hour later and asked me some questions. After a few email exchanges, the guy asks me to please provide the video file to them, so they can see it. And he gives me the name of an FTP server and a username and password.

Well, I have no shame, so I emailed the guy back and tell him the video is about 10 minutes long, so it's a pretty big file (by late 90s Internet standards) and it was porn, which I am sure is against all sorts of Apple HR polices.

An hour later I get an email telling me it's fine to upload the video, and it included a different FTP server and a different username and password.

I uploaded the file. Two weeks later I got a beta build of QuickTime to try out. It fixed the issue.

My wife and I got a good laugh out of it at the time.

Apple playing cheapskate with the fast charger reminds me of their past with 16gb iPhones

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 07:56 AM PST

In 2019 there is absolutely no justification for a 6.5 inch (or any inch) OLED iPhone having a 5 watt cube in the box. Unbelievable.

The new iPad Pro is overpriced, limited by iOS, and structurally weak....but is an absolutely phenomenal device

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 04:01 PM PST

Picked up the 11" iPad Pro a few weeks ago on a decent sale and having traded in my 9.7" iPad Pro so I got it for around $500. After I ordered it, the bending reports started flowing in and I was an anxiety-ridden wreck, but the Apple Gods looked down favorably upon me and it appears my model does not have a (detectable by me, anyway) bend. I'm annoyed that I have to use such caution whenever I move the damn thing or close the device to the keyboard, but I guess I should be doing that with an expensive device anyway.

I'm not really a "power user," I just wanted a nice, fast, portable and beautiful device with a great battery life. This thing is just unbelievably fast, has a truly gorgeous screen, an optimal low-bezel design and the battery lasts forever. I can use this regularly for two days before needing to plug it in. I don't have the pencil, but the keyboard is honestly pretty great and I can type on it just as fast as any other laptop. Yes, text editing is annoying, but not impossible. I've been making it a point to learn all the keyboard shortcuts and it really does help with the efficiency of this device.

Is Apple turning into a greedy, money-hungry group of slime balls who wish to milk the blood from every last one of their customers? Of course. Is the way they have handled the bent $1000 device issue nothing short of abhorrent? Obviously. But everything else aside, is this one of the best products they've delivered in the history of the company, assuming it isn't bent? Absolutely. I've seen tons of negativity surrounding this device, and rightfully so, but if you're on the fence, I'm a +1 for this product, it's an absolute joy to use.

Should we continue to trust Bloomberg after the spy Chip story?

Given that they haven't posted anything since the supermicro report, I'm inclined to believe that the story was put out deliberately to damage the companies mentioned.

    Ipad Air2 vs New Ipad

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 01:12 AM PST

Is there much noticeable difference between the Ipad Air 2 and a brand new one? When I went from the Air1 to the Air 2 there was a pretty big difference. Just wondering if it would be worth upgrading now sincethey are much cheaper than they used to be.

URL of Apps to use for login with password managers

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 12:19 AM PST

In password manager apps, they often ask for the URL of the log in you are entering a login for one of the entry fields and in most cases, if you input the website URL, when you go to log in, it will work. I've noticed in some cases when I enter what you'd expect, when I use my Password Manager to autocomplete, it doesn't know login to match to.

Is there anyway to see what URL is associated with the app to log in, so my password manager knows which I want?

The only reason why Apple is struggling: it went from 650 to 1000!

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 02:10 AM PST

For many years 650 was the price tag and continous innovation. Now, since iPhone X, it becames the next LISA.

The first PC of the 80's cost 5000. Now even a laptop may cost 500!

innovation is not always synonymous of high greedy prices!

Does anyone know the reason for this?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 12:56 AM PST

I woke up to find my iPhone X battery on ~30%. It was 100% before I sleep. I checked the battery menu in settings and here's what I found. Why would Siri be operating all this time and chugging up my juice?

Apple Music needs an better way to share music and playlists with Spotify users

    Posted: 06 Jan 2019 12:43 AM PST

Since Apple Music came to exist, a new music sharing fragmentation problem has begun.

Previously, almost everyone I knew was on Spotify. Now there's a split. I share a lot of songs and playlists with friends and family. I used to be able to share in-app, or just drop a Spotify URI/playlist URI wherever and it was fine. But now I need to know what service people subscribe to. In mixed or uncertain company, it's safer to default to Spotify. I'm surprised Apple is allowing this state of affairs.

Spotify has a free ad-supported tier, so usually anyone can listen to a Spotify link. Spotify has an awesome embeddable web player. And at least among my friends and family, Spotify is also wildly more common.

You add it all up, and when sharing a music link to a group, Spotify links are safe to share in mixed company. Apple Music links are totally useless to a majority of people.

This is a huge fragmentation problem entirely of Apple's creation, and it makes me consider switching back to Spotify all the time.

    Increasingly, I think:

    • Apple needs a free/ad-supported tier so that casual non-music-people can still be shared to occasionally
    • We need a service-agnostic way to share music playlists that allow people to open the song/playlist on whatever platform they use. I shouldn't have to know or care about what service somebody uses when I link them to a song.
      • Apple sort of handled something like this on AppleTV with content searching. You can look up a movie you want to watch for example, and if it's available on say Netflix and Amazon and iTunes, you can choose which service you'd like to use, and it redirects.

Yes, there are some services that can convert AM playlists to Spotify and vice versa, but these are generally not free, and they don't fix the fundamental problem of it being a pain to share music links to groups of people. You have to give multiple links to a playlist adapted to each service.

    MBP 2018 15" Keyboard Review

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 03:06 AM PST

    Hi guys,

So i just wanted to warn everyone here that the 3rd generation Butterfly keyboard is NOT FIXED.

I have the mbp since about late summer 18 and already 2 keys are down right BROKEN.

The E key and the R key very often just double type or even tripple thats why i wont remove the spelling mistakes caused by them down below so you can see what its like to type using this POS.

I used the mbp a lot yes but i always took grreat care of it, i cleaneed it using special towels, i used canned air at leeast once a month just to make sure i dont get and problems and guess what it still happed, the E key was first and i did not want to return it because i need it for work however i did report it to Apple and they said its finee i can rreturn it at a later time.

Now about 2-3 months after the E key causing prroblems the R key started to do the same all of a sudden.

This will be the last time i bought an Apple laptop, there is NO WAY they can sell a 3000+€ laptop and the keys break after not even half a year tbh.

I have 10 year old laptops that werre way cheaper that still work perfectly.

What a shame, i will be returning the mbp and if possible i will try to get a refund because i am damn surree this will happen again after max 3 months eeven if my keyboard is to be replaced.

    Gifting iCloud

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 11:46 PM PST

    Hello r/apple !

Seeking direction on how to best gift my mom iCloud storage. My mom has a firstname.lastname@gmail account tied to iTunes and a firstnamelastname@gmail account tied to her iCloud or vice versa (she lives out of town, so I can't just get to her phone easily). From Google's standpoint, it's the same email address, but I'm not entirely clear on how Apple treats this. I'm assuming it counts as two different email addresses.

From what I've read, if I gave her an iTunes gift card, she could redeem it, but since the emails don't match, she wouldn't be able to use it for the iCloud account.

    Thanks in advance.

    Chrome Weirdness on MacBook Pro

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 08:50 AM PST

    Video

I'm curious if others have seen this behavior and what might be causing it. Essentially, as I cover the camera area and then uncover it, video playing in Chrome begins to drop a significant amount of frames of the video. It only happens in Chrome and only if Chrome is the active application. Note that I have Automatic Brightness turned off in System Preferences. In my video, I have Activity Monitor up and I see the Control Strip process spiking with either Safari or Chrome selected. I would expect to see Safari drop frames if Control Strip was the culprit.

    I'm on a 2017 MacBook Pro running Mojave 10.14.2
