Apple only allows you to put your iPod touch in low power mode when you put it on lost mode Posted: 12 Jan 2019 07:01 PM PST I just thought this was dumb.. I have an iPod touch 6, and anyone who uses an iPod touch knows that Apple doesn't give you the option to enable battery percentage, or low power mode. So I just assumed that was just how it was. But the other day I was just goofing off in find my iPhone just to see what i could do. And when I enabled lost mode, [link] [comments] |

How Important of a Factor Is Privacy In Your Purchase Decision? Posted: 12 Jan 2019 05:44 PM PST I recently watched a YouTube video by Rene Ritchie, RIGHT TO REMAIN PRIVATE, and came out of it genuinely wondering how many of you factor privacy in your purchasing decisions? Is it even a factor and does the typical consumer even care? Personally, I use Apple for my Phone, TV, and Watch. I use many Google services and have a few Home Minis throughout the house as well as a Ring Doorbell and security system. My go-to laptop is a Chromebook. So I have a pretty diverse set of products at my house and privacy is not something I factored into any of my purchasing decisions. What I really cared about was are there features that I really want to use and is it a good value? Now I knew about Apple's hardline stance on privacy where none of my data is being mined and sold to random corporations. However, I don't really care on that aspect too much. What are they going to do? Send me a few targeted email for deals on something I was looking for? Or maybe a recommendation for a Facebook friend for someone that I met while getting coffee? Cool, more power to you. But now when you see Ring and Amazon looking into your home and selling that capability to other companies then you're going a bit too far. Is privacy important enough to use a company like Apple whose services may be weaker since they do not collect and use customer data to make them better? (Looking at you Siri). Or is the convenience of heavily subsidized products worth the price you pay in loss of privacy? Let me know what you all think. EDIT: Formatting [link] [comments] |
I've been very reluctant to post this but here goes Posted: 12 Jan 2019 02:55 PM PST Here goes, A bit of a background on me, I am a tech enthusiast and in terms of cell phones I use both Google and iPhone and upgrade every year. Currently I have the 2XL/Razer 2 and iPhone X/S Max. The following is purely anecdotal and based on my own experience with USB-C in phones VS Lightning. I commute to Toronto every day and use Fostex headphones with the Razer/Google USB-C to 3.5 or Apples Lightning to 3.5 dongle every day. Depends on the phone I feel like carrying. I have noticed with both my android phones the USB-C port becomes loose over time quiet fast. To the point where even the slightest touch will pause my music. The same applies when I drive my car using Android Auto. For my Razer 2 in particular this started happening after 2 weeks. Where as with my iPhone X, now a year old. The Port is till tight as ever. In fact, short of pulling out the dongle I can't jiggle the port to cut audio. Upon closer inspection I noticed USB-C is purely friction fit. Lightning is a friction & pinch fit. So it has two tiny tabs in the phone and two ingresses in the male end that "lock" into place to keep the dongle secure and snug. Apple has already moved their laptops to USB-C and now their iPads. I implore them to look further into this and possibly tweak USB-C to make it physically as secure as the lightning port. [link] [comments] |
The expensive design flaw with current gen MacBook Pros: fragile display flex cable Posted: 12 Jan 2019 03:53 AM PST Hey /r/apple. Just trying to get some awareness and discussion going about what seems to be an inevitable issue with the current generation of MacBook Pros (2016+) to which Apple still doesn't have a repair program for users out of warranty. This video explains the issue pretty well and briefly (just watch the first 50secs): https://youtu.be/602Q00G_8rw Basically, the problem is that Apple has used a fragile cable which connects the display with the bottom part of the laptop, and this cable, after several cycles of opening and closing the laptop lid, develops fracture(s) that end up preventing the display's backlight from working so you wouldn't be able to see anything on the screen. And how is this to be repaired? Although the video I linked above showed the shop doing a repair on the faulty cable, it seems the best way is to replace the entire display because the cable is manufactured as part of the display assembly, and cannot be individually replaced. This video by Loius Rossmann (https://youtu.be/NzjoELvrkYo - 3min28secs), who generally seems to make board level repairs to fix issues for relatively cheap(er than official Apple prices) also sums up that a display replacement is needed. And this seems to be how Apple and Apple Authorised Service Providers are repairing devices with this issue as well (my own MBP is currently getting a display replacement for this issue by an AASP so I can vouch for this, as well as posts on the forum threads I'll add below). The problem with this repair method? New displays are ridiculously expensive. And for customers out of warranty? So far, they've had to foot the bill themselves. And to add: the new displays will still have the same flaw! This cable design appears to be used in every single 13" and 15" MacBook Pro from the current generation, so essentially every user of the current gen MBPs could inevitably face this issue. This is why I hope Apple will get around to establishing a repair program to freely provide repairs to customers with MBPs with this issue who are out of warranty, and to develop a better design so that future models of MBPs will not face this same problem. I hope this post will help with this, as well as to inform potential new MBP buyers to this possible problem they might face in the future so that they can make a more informed buying decision. I don't know if the 12" MacBook or the new MacBook Air are affected by this, but I haven't seem discussion about them facing this problem (anyone able to share more knowledge about this?) Here is a customer-made website summarising this problem: https://flexgate.me/ (yes I cringed on the '-gate' name too 😪) And some forum threads about this: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macbook-pro-flexgate-discussion.2160010/ https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/screengate-mbp-13-with-touch-bar-late-2016-model-a1706.2163610/ https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250038543 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250063310 (for some reason I'm getting access denied on this.. don't understand why) And this petition: https://www.change.org/p/apple-fix-all-macbook-pro-2016-and-later-with-stage-light-effect-or-backlight-shutdown-flexgate [link] [comments] |

Second MacBook Pro to have a keyboard issue. Should I just expect it at this point? Posted: 12 Jan 2019 04:59 PM PST Last May, my trusty 2014 MacBook Pro's I key stopped working. Over the next few weeks, more keys stopped responding, and I couldn't use the laptop to type anymore. My Apple Store visit ended with a $400 quote to replace the logic board since it's out of warranty. I specifically remember being told I should have gotten AppleCare, even though it would have expired two years before the issue happened. Oh well, it's a four year old laptop, right? It was time to buy a new laptop anyway. So I got one in August— I'm a video editor so with all the specs I needed, it cost me $3500. And here I am, 5 months later, with a N key that doesn't respond and a space bar that double presses. I take it to the store, and they say they'll need to take it in for repair. "We're seeing this a lot lately." That'll take 7 days. So I'm weighing 7 days unable to work, versus an annoying typing experience until I go on a vacation. I don't have a replacement laptop, and they offer a loaner if I subscribe to their $500 a year Joint Venture program. Nice try on the upsell. They didn't offer anything else, even something nominal, to make up for the lost time (managers made that call), and I was left frustrated and wondering if I'll be spending money on Apple again. I wish they gave me anything. Even a $5 gift card would have made me feel less annoyed. I will. I'm in their ecosystem, and overall, their products are still better than Windows for what I do. So here I am. MacBook that I bought 5 months ago, and back to square one. I'm disappointed, guys. [link] [comments] |
Apple Giveback and Cracked Back Glass? Posted: 12 Jan 2019 10:55 PM PST I dropped my iPhone X tonight and developed a very small hairline crack between the camera and edge. I have AppleCare+. There is no functional damage so I wouldn't bother with the $99 fee, but will it count as a damaged enclosure if I try to trade it in and thus cost far more than $99 in lost value in the long run? Posted: 12 Jan 2019 08:56 AM PST Title basically says it all. Not looking to shoot ASMR videos or make movie quality footage, just need a mic that will work with the gimbal set up and pick up my voice across a small to medium sized classroom. as well as pick up student responses. Posted: 12 Jan 2019 10:11 AM PST When talking about AirPods, everyone seems to ignore the fact that they're one of the few earbuds on the market that aren't in-ear. In my opinion, this contributes both to worse sound quality, and a less comfortable product. How would you feel if AirPods 2nd gen were in-ear? [link] [comments] |
Why did Apple get rid of Magsafe? Posted: 13 Jan 2019 02:07 AM PST Genuinely curious. Isn't the Magsafe superior to a regular USB-C cable in every way? Couldn't they have made a USB-C version of it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jan 2019 08:11 AM PST Hi all, I know this may sound stupid but I was curious to how long you think an iPad Pro would last for usablility? For editing photos, drawing, etc., do you think it will still be great in 5-6 years? Thank you [link] [comments] |
So I’ve been a PC user my whole life... I just switch to Mac... Posted: 12 Jan 2019 08:55 PM PST Most folks I've come across here on Reddit prefer text to video, so I'll give you somewhat of a summary on my feelings, but if you want to watch a dope video about it - click here and be blessed - Now, on to my findings... So while I do love PC's and building them has been a source of joy for me these past few years, for the work I do now, switching to Mac has been a dream... I mean, I did go all the way into the Apple orchard with this one. I use Apple's software and other apple device alongside my main Apple pick up, the 15" 2018 MacBook Pro. As far as computing goes, it does everything I need it to do, video editing, photo editing, e-mails, office docs, etc... Needless to say - I'm enjoying it. However... that isn't to say there weren't issues. The most notable one (that tripped me up a few times) was the Lack of Ports. There were multiple projects where my computer was useless because I forgot to bring a damn dongle, (that is a terrible word) rendering my computer useless. Now, I'll admit, it was my fault for forgetting... but it was a frustration none the less. Now, I realize, that isn't an issue that you have to deal with with all MacOS based devices and other than that... It was hard for me to take issue with much else. Some folks don't like the keyboard, not me. Some folks don't like the Touch Bar, not me. I mean... I was digging for issues, I was hard pressed to find them. In fact, I don't know how I've been getting along for 25+ years never owning one of these things. AirDrop is amazing. The speakers, impressive. The form - Stunning... I can't imagine to many use cases it wouldn't be an asset in, aside from gaming. I've only had it for a few months at this point but, I can't see myself switching back for the foreseeable future. I can't believe I've been wrong my whole life... [link] [comments] |
Meet WriteMapper 2, my Mac and iPad app that turns your ideas into text documents using mind maps Posted: 12 Jan 2019 03:34 AM PST Hey /r/Apple! For the past few months, I've been working hard through and during the holiday season to unveil in 2019: WriteMapper 2! WriteMapper is the app that helps you turn your ideas into text documents using mind maps, taking your writing productivity to the next level. You can download the trial or watch the introduction video on the website: https://writemapper.com The app was made to help you:
WriteMapper is a writing-focused mind mapping app, where each node on the mind map can be expanded into a distraction-free editor. This allows you to fill in text content for that particular node. Contents can be styled and marked up, like making words bold, using lists and even inserting code blocks (much like reddit's text editor, actually). From there, you can bounce between writing and using the visual nature of the mind map to take stock of the structure of your work, and make any additions or changes to it as you go along. The writing workflow quickly becomes:
When you're all finished, the app also has a function that will let you export the entire mind map (and each node's contents) into a text document. Various popular file formats are supported, including:
New in WriteMapper 2 are three new major features: File Import, Full Document Preview, and Custom Keyboard Shortcuts, among many other improvements. Although each of these was a major undertaking to implement, I'm very glad to be able to offer existing customers a free upgrade to WriteMapper 2. The app has gotten some amazingly positive feedback on Product Hunt, on top of being mentioned on Cult of Mac, so I thought to share this with you guys too. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback about WriteMapper, and answering any questions you might have. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Notes app focused on the content organization - Unit Posted: 12 Jan 2019 08:34 AM PST Hey /r/apple. Just want to take a few minutes of your time and introduce the new note-taking app my team and I worked for a long time. We've decided to create it because we didn't find any effective solution for collecting and organizing a big number of notes (yes, I have a lot of them). So, Unit is a note-taking app that provides a quite new experience of collecting, organizing and managing all your notes. Content in Unit is made up of independent blocks, like texts, lists, tasks, images, files etc., so a user has the ability to manage the data more efficiently. There're a lot of interesting features like content reordering by gestures, the ability to create nested hierarchy, tags, reminders, color coding, offline mode, telegram messenger integration etc. Currently Unit is available for iOS only, but we're planning to develop apps for all popular platforms in the nearest future. We're actively looking for feedback. Please let me know what do you think. I will be happy to answer your questions. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

My Apple Watch never wants to connect to phone... Posted: 12 Jan 2019 03:51 PM PST I have a series 1 Apple Watch, fairly new and in great condition. It's paired to my phone but there's periods of times where it randomly stops connecting and receiving my notifications. I look in settings and says my watch isn't connected. I click connect, and it says that the watch isn't even in range... it's on my wrist. I have unpaired it and paired it several times because of this and it's getting old. Anyone know what's going on?
