ACTUALLY unpopular opinion: My experience with the 2018 MacBook Air. Posted: 09 Jan 2019 07:00 PM PST Hello, I have a few words to say about the 2018 MacBook Air that I just purchased. WARNING! LONG POST. TLDR at the bottom! After reading a lot of posts on YouTube/Reddit about the new Air, there's a general consensus in the comments that the new Air is a terrible computer for the price and it doesn't offer much for the $1100+ price tag. Background: I own a Samsung Notebook 7 Spin (15 in, lowest end 6th gen i7, 12 GB RAM with 2 GB VRAM, and 1 TB HDD). I've owned this for two years and put Geek Squad insurance on it from Best Buy. Recently, I sent in my Samsung to get the battery replaced for free as the Geek Squad insurance expires in a few days and I'm trying to get my money worth. So I sent it in and when it came back, they actually hadn't replaced the battery on there as I wanted so they asked me to send it back again. I use my laptop a lot daily and definitely need it for college use as classes will be starting very soon. So, the manager at Best Buy offered me an extended return policy on any laptop of my choosing to use it as a "loaner" until I get the Samsung back. I went back and forth on a few HPs and Dells. I came to realization that I can try the new MacBook Air, it'll be a new experience and so I bought it. ON TO THE UNPOPULAR OPINION: I've been using it for about a week now and the ONLY thing that bothers me about it is the lack of USB A ports. I'm a heavy Android user with ADB/Shell and so I need the USB A port. The new butterfly keyboard makes a different "click" sound that I enjoy and I can't seem to stop typing on. I know that a LOT of people hate the butterfly and honestly, I thought I'd hate it too, but it's grown on me since I first started using it. I know that the base model Air (the one I bought) has a shitty Intel processor and that the SSD is only 128 GB and it kind of sucks how low it is. However, for an average user that's buying the Air, I have to say that it can fit almost all programs I want and still have room for more. It's kind of like a phone for me, where I have a 64 GB phone that's almost out of storage while if you asked me a few years ago, I barely would've filled 16 GB. Apple really should have included 256 GB if they were to make it more appealing for charging $1200+ for the price. However, I don't have any complains with it for my daily use unless I start video editing, but I can use an external SSD for those special cases. Then again, why would you buy an Air for video editing anyway?? Again, I know that's not the point and that they should be cheaper if it's only 128 GB, but for an average person buying the Air, it would have no problem. I've been absolutely LOVING the Air so far. First off, the Touch ID. It's been massively convenient for me and extremely easy to set up. The performance of this thing is top notch. The display looks absolutely stunning. When using my Samsung, I struggle to work in a brightly lit room because the display on it simply sucks ass and it gets nowhere near as bright as the one on this Air. The battery life is crazy good on this compared to the < 3 hour on my Samsung. I charged it yesterday morning and it's still at 12% with no issues or lag in performance because of it. For a shitty dual core i5 with 1.6 GHz clock speed, this thing handles HEAVY apps such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator extremely well. On my Samsung, each app took 2-3 mins each time to start up. However, on the Air, they take about 20 seconds. Massive difference. After getting into Photoshop, I tried editing some RAW files from my Canon 5D, and surprisingly, there was very little lag compared to the massive amounts of lag on my Samsung (even for an i7). It loaded and interacted with Illustrator and InDesign just as quickly and just as smoothly without dropping frames in animations or heating up at all. Finally, there's the speakers. When I first played music through them at full volume, I was shocked at how little distortion in the audio there was and how LOUD and D E E P they sounded. I compared it with a Google Home Mini sitting on the other side of the room and I could almost use the Air's speakers in conjunction with the Home Mini as a makeshift surround sound system. The detail in the audio like the smaller background beats and all those quirks were emphasized and I could hear everything with crystal clear quality. The bass is thumping and when I'm close to it, I can feel it thumping. Did I mention they're stereo upward facing so the experience feels just that much more immersive? Yeah. Overall, my satisfaction with this product is THROUGH THE ROOF. I give this laptop a 10/10 on just how easy it was to start, set up, tweak, and get it up and running exactly how I wanted compared to a Windows laptop. When I finally have to replace my junky Samsung, I'll definitely be looking at a MacBook Pro as the Pro just takes everything great about the Air and amplifies it. This is the thing about Apple, as much as people want to hate on them, their products just work. There's no "aftermarket" things you have to do to them. This is coming from a person who has used Windows as their primary for life and had an Android for 7 years with Root/ADB modifications, so believe me when I say, I'm not new to this stuff, but I was just blown away by the new MacBook Air. I hope you found my experience useful in considering your next laptop purchase :) Let me know your thoughts on this, would love to hear your experiences with a Mac. TLDR; blown away by the performance, the speakers, the screen, and the keyboard and exceeded all my expectation of what makes a great laptop even though it's still 100% overpriced and should start somewhere around $999. Posted: 09 Jan 2019 12:49 PM PST The iPhone SE was the only accesible iPhone in lots of countries. Here in Argentina, you can still buy one at 14,500 ARS (roughly 390 USD as of January 2019), while the next cheaper iPhone, the 6 (yes, they still sell the 6, and it's more expensive than the SE), goes for 19,000 ARS (almost 510 USD). The iPhone 7, the one a lot of people touted as "the new SE", goes for around 45,000 ARS (a whooping 1,200 USD). "The new SE" costs more than 3 times what the original SE costs. All these prices are official ones, from carriers and authorized resellers (no official Apple Stores here, sorry). Some importers have better prices, but not by much, and none of them is currently selling the SE as far as I know. The thing is, it simply makes no sense. When the SE was widely available (now it's only sold through a single carrier that apparently simply has excess inventory), it was very popular, and a phone that made a lot of people switch from Android. People that never even considered buying Apple products because they were "prohibitively expensive" saw the SE as a good value for their money and, tired of Android's unreliability, jumped ship. Without the SE, this is simply impossible. There's simply no phone that's close enough in price, and the 6 is seen as a bad value proposition. The 7, sadly, is no replacement, since the price is badly inflated. The SE was the perfect phone for emerging markets, that allowed Apple to have more potential customers for its services. Nowadays that's simply impossible: There's no iPhone that's close enough in specs and price. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Jan 2019 08:03 AM PST I read somewhere (on here, or Gizmodo or something else, I forget) that the iPad Pro's magnets make it possible to place it on a fridge. This is technically true. Trying to be a smartass, I decided to try it, since I was following a recipe on my iPad and this would have saved some valuable counter space. Thing is, the iPad attaches to the fridge, but not strongly enough to remain in the same position on the fridge, like a fridge magnet would. My iPad slid down ever so quickly, and if I hadn't managed to somewhat slow the drag, I'd be crying over a broken screen on my expensive new toy. Instead, I have a small blemish in one of the corners. I deserve that blemish for being a dummy. TL;DR: the magnets on your iPad Pro will not keep the iPad attached to a metallic surface—it will slide down and you will regret it. [link] [comments] |

Is the Radeon VII the GPU of the upcoming 2019 Mac Pro and iMac Pro? Posted: 09 Jan 2019 05:17 PM PST AMD revealed the Radeon VII today at their CES conference based on their 7nm Vega 20 architecture, which was originally designed exclusively for the datacenter and pro markets. While the gaming performance is pretty good (around RTX 2080 levels), the pro performance is what really received a massive boost with 16GB of HBM2 memory on a wider memory bus, which results in a staggering 1TB/s of memory bandwidth (over 2x that of Vega 64). According to their press slides, the Radeon VII is around 28% faster in content creation and around 62% faster in OpenCL benchmarks. Since Apple and AMD already have a partnership, I would imagine that this would be the GPU of the upcoming 2019 Mac Pro and iMac Pro. Is there a reason why iTunes doesn’t accept Apple Pay? Posted: 09 Jan 2019 04:38 PM PST It seems kinda silly that a first-party app like iTunes doesn't accept Apple Pay. Is there a reason why that's the case? Interestingly it accepts PayPal. It's perplexing Apple allows a third-party wallet but not their own. [link] [comments] |
Apple Maps India now supports directions/navigation Posted: 09 Jan 2019 08:14 PM PST Couldn't use my Apple Watch until now for navigation since there was no support for directions in India. Still find it better than google maps. Hopefully it won't be as buggy as the first release. Till now adding locations to events in Calendar was pretty much useless, expect the experience to get much better with the integration. [link] [comments] |

WARNING on using phobio trade in service for your MacBook through Apples official trade back program Posted: 09 Jan 2019 01:35 PM PST My Mac was destroyed during shipping and now it appears I'm SoL, wanted to offer a warning to the community. I was looking to upgrade my MacBook and saw that my 2015 model would fetch a similar price through their trade in program than it would selling it on eBay or the like. I could apply this to a new Mac through an Apple gift card. They send you their box and shipping label to send it in. I got an email today that $400 had been taken off my quote because of damage, and a picture showing my screen cracked to shreds. Well I disputed it and I had pictures of my computer on the day before shipping showing the screen in good shape. They said it was a shipping issue and either for me to accept the new price or they can ship it back. I realize it may not be directly their fault but here is what irks me: the box the sent me obviously did not do it's job to protect the computer and the shipping was not insured and I was informed at fedex that the label was already paid for so it would be phobios call whether if they insured it or not and if I wanted to I'd have to pay for a new label outright and no surprise, it wasn't. If you're sending a device that isn't broken, I'd look elsewhere. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 10 Jan 2019 01:22 AM PST Can anybody recommend a solid XR clear case? The Apple-branded one left awful contact marks on the back of my phone. I have the Spiggen clear case, but it lets dust and grime particles in something fierce. [link] [comments] |
Increased zooming in photos app Posted: 10 Jan 2019 01:01 AM PST On my 7+ I was able to zoom in a LOT on photos. Say it was a photo of someone's whole face, I could zoom right up to the iris, with the quality still kept. However now as I've upgraded to the 8+ I've noticed that I can't zoom in past the standard double tap. Is there anyway to change it so I can zoom in past the double tap? [link] [comments] |
