Is it time for a new MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:32 PM PST

Hi everyone. I wanted to get Reddit's expert opinion on what I should do with my laptop situation. I currently own a 15-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro. Here are the specs:

    Processor: 2GHz Intel Core 17

    Memory: 4GB (2 memory slots) 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256 MB.

    23.61GB free of 498.88GB

    OS X Yosemite

Currently, I use this laptop constantly for typical online browsing, Netflix and Youtube, but I also use it for work. I use Final Cut Pro, InDesign and Illustrator. I want to start to learn After Effects and other creative programs, but I don't think my current laptop can handle any additional programs, as my computer has started to get very slow when multiple applications are open.

After reading about what I currently have and what I want to use it for, what do you recommend me getting in a new MacBook Pro? It is time for a new one, right? I don't want to go crazy with spending extra on things, but I do want to make sure what I get will suffice.

Thank you all in advance for your knowledge and advice. I just want to make sure that I purchase the MacBook Pro that I need and that it will last me as long as this one has.

    Brightness issue

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:30 AM PST

    Hi guys 👋

When I plug my second screen to my 2017 Macbook Pro (v10.14.1), my brightness is automatically set to the maximum value. Do you know how can I bypass this behavior?

    Thanks you!

What are my options if I have a late 2009 Macbook?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:25 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have a late 2009 macbook 13". I have upgraded the ram and it runs as if it's new.

I am trying to update my iPhone with iTunes 12.8 but it says that my current OS is not compatible with iOS 12.

My macbook is currently running OS X Yosemite (10.10.5).

It appears that Mojave will not work on my system, so what are my options if I want to sync my phone with iTunes?

    Thanks!

My upgraded 2012 Macbook is having problems when hooked to my Dell U2717d monitor. Is it time for an upgrade?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:49 AM PST

Hi all. When I'm doing programming lately I need more screen real estate so I opted for a 2440x1440 monitor and this is the first time my trusty 2012 Macbook has struggled with anything. It has been upgraded to 8gb of RAM and a 256gb SSD. It seems to stutter quit a bit and loses mouse tracking when it is trying to push that many pixels. Would a 2018 model do significantly better with this? I know if it is entirely a GPU issue, that could still be problematic but I feel like it could finally be time for a newer model.

Going on a vacation without Macbook, how should I store it?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:57 AM PST

This will be an extended break, at least two months if not longer. I have never left my Macbook Pro mid-2012 alone for this long before. Will unplugging it and shutting down be enough for storage?

MacBook Pro 2014 vs MacBook Air 2018?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:16 AM PST

I currently have a MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2014 2.2GHz Quad i7 with 16GB Ram which I use for Video Editing in FCPX 1080p. I'm buying a new laptop for college next year that's thinner and lighter. I'm going to want something that can edit as well and do some basic graphic design work. Would the base MacBook Air be enough for this because it's in my price range at £1,200 but it only has a 1.6GHz i5 with 8GB Ram? I edit off an external drive so storage isn't a problem. Should I get a 2018 MacBook Pro 13" or get a MacBook Air then a Mac Mini for exiting? I only really want 1 computer if possible?

I'm not replacing my MacBook with my iPad Pro because I need the full Adobe Suite and External Storage with a Mouse.

Need advice about selling damaged MacBook Pro

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:07 AM PST

I've had my 2016 baseline MacBook Pro for about a year and a half now and I've always been very careful with it (never dropped it, never exposed to water, etc). I used it last Tuesday to do some homework right before going on Thanksgiving break. When I opened it back up on Sunday night before school, the screen was showing thin horizontal lines going across the display. Sometimes if I close the lid or adjust the angle they'll disappear only to return and stay persistent as if the image was burned in. I took it to the Apple store yesterday and they quoted me a repair price of $475. Thats almost a third of what I originally paid for the machine.

I really hate to spend that much on it, so I was thinking of maybe selling it and putting the money towards a newer refurbished model. Does anybody have any advice about where the best place to sell it might be and what I could potentially get for it? Any help is appreciated!

Edit: just for reference, the computer still functions normally, the screen just looks noticeably bad
