iPhone not being recognized by MacBook, but able to charge? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 05:56 PM PST Hi there, I just updated my late 2009 MacBook to OS High Sierra (10.13). When I plus in my iOS 12 iPhone 6s plus, it charges but neither of the USB ports connect my iPhone to iTunes. Is there anything I can try to make this work? my iTunes is also up to date. Thanks. MacBook Pro 13" 2017 256GB/8GB or MacBook Air 2018 256GB/16GB? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:11 PM PST I'm choosing a computer for my mother and having issue in deciding on a configuration. Her use case would be web browsing, watching movies and possibly using a few apps (Spotify, Excel, etc). She will not be running VM's, rendering videos or anything of the sort. She will mostly be using the computer indoors. The goal is to choose a computer that would be good for 5-7 years. And by good I mean everything working smoothly and snappy. I'm wondering if 8GB of RAM would be enough. I am aware of the advantages of the MacBook Pro over Air:
I'm also aware of the advantages of the Air over the Pro:
A big factor which made consider the Pro instead of the Air was the screen. It's a little brighter and has better colors. Although she will not be doing any video editing, she will be watching movies and browsing the web and it's a lot more pleasant to look at a better screen. But then again, I'm not sure if the screen quality difference is significant, since I've read many conflicting reports online. She won't be storing too many things on it (things like photos will be offloaded to the cloud), but I want to future-proof against future OS/app updates and leave some space to store at least something, so I went with My biggest question is RAM. I'm a software developer and using a Linux machine with 8GB of RAM. I also do some photo and video editing, as well as some virtualization. My set up works good enough for me (although I do have an NVIDIA GPU, which helps with photo/video editing), but occasionally I do feel the lack of RAM. For this and other reasons I will also be upgrading to a Mac very soon and will go with at least 16GB of RAM. My mum's usage is very different from mine though and I'm not sure if she needs or will use the extra RAM. To sum it up, the goal is to have a laptop that works well for
For those reasons, I'm undecided between the following two models:
In my country, the difference between the two machine configurations is 60 euros, which is not much considering the usage time span. What would be your suggestion? Perhaps you would suggest a different configuration? Thank you. [link] [comments]

Apple Music album art not displaying after updating to iOS 12 Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:10 PM PST Ever since I've updated to iOS 12 on both my iPhone and iPad, every time I add a song to my library in Apple Music on my iPad the album art doesn't transfer over to the phone and it's just a bunch of blank albums, while not really an earth shattering bug, it is rather frustrating, any fixes? Medical Site for Testing and Certifications Not Compatible with Mac Computers. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:59 PM PST Hope this is okay to ask here! I have a mid 2012 MBP and am a travel nurse and often have to do some computer work and testing from home before each new travel assignment. I always end up having to go to a public library bc the medical sites are not compatible with macs. It says I have to have internet explorer 10 or higher. I tried the trick where you can add the source to your browser and select whatever operating system you're supposed to have but it did not work for me. I always read that internet explorer is not compatible with Macs anymore. Is there an app or any other way to work around this so I don't have to spend hours at a library doing this stuff, rather than from the comfort of home? I really don't want to have to download Windows either, IF that's even possible? But, I'm willing to if it is possible, as long as it's safe and won't give my MBP the dreaded windows probe viruses. Any possible help is appreciated immensely! [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 12:25 PM PST I've been told for a long, long time that having a lot of things on the desktop on MacOS impacts system performance — that the best think to do would be to keep the desktop bare. I was wondering, from the community's experience, is there any truth in this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:49 AM PST Pretty explanatory title, but I'll detail a little; It's a mid-2012 MBP, 13", 2.5 GHz dual core i5, 4GB ram installed. So according to a few different websites, the real maximum ram is 16 GB. I use it for music production, and I will go for 16 GB if that's not a problem. However, Apple's official max capacity for this mac is 8GB. What problems may I encounter if I go for the 16GB upgrade? Is there anything special to keep in mind when upgrading? Also, why is apple's maximum set lower than the "real" maximum (if 16 GB isn't problematic)? Thanks a bunch! Edit: Seems like everyone agrees that 16 GB works. Thanks everyone! [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:47 PM PST I have recently upgraded my phone from an iPhone 7+ to an iPhone XS Max. After I restored my phone, I noticed when I went to look at my pictures, I had to wait for all my live pictures to download. I have all the pictures but when I force touch to view the Live Photo, I have to wait for it to download. Is there a setting I have turned on doing this? What do I have to do to download all my Live Photo's? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:49 AM PST I got a 2015 last year so my old one has been sitting in a drawer since. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:26 PM PST I have forgotten my Apple ID password as I haven't had an apple product since January. I have also changed my phone number a few times since I made the account a few years ago. Everytime I go to try and recover or update, it's asking me to type in my old phone number, which I don't remember. I'm trying to do it by answering security questions or something but I can't figure out how to get there. I also don't know the password to my actual Email which my apple ID is from. I was just wondering if anyone knew how I could go about this without having to use my old phone number? I've also tried following steps on google through apple websites but it's so confusing and hasn't been much help as it always leads back to having to put my number in. I have apps and other things linked to this ID with saved stuff so it would suck if I actually lost it all for good. If it matters, I'm from Australia. Don't know if anything is different country wise. Thank you in advance for anyone who comments with any advice. I appreciate it so much. [link] [comments]
About Apple Music subscription Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:58 PM PST If I stop paying Apple Music for a while, when I decide to pay again, will I get all of the songs I saved back? Is it possible to resize the screen on broken macbook pro? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:07 AM PST Hey, First time posting here so I hope I'm doing this right. Full specs. The left side of my mid-2012 15inch macbook pro retina's screen got destroyed while travelling and left a nice black line almost 3 inch wide in it place. You can see the busted screen here. My question is : Is it possible to size down the screen so that it fits into the visible area? Maybe through Terminal or with the help of a program. There is no point in telling be to fix the screen unless the price is right. I already use external monitors. MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:31 PM PST I decided I'd gotten tired of deleting apps one at a time, and figured I'd free up some space on my iPhone 7+ 32GB by erasing everything and just installing the things I needed. So I first made an encrypted backup. Erased and reset phone. When I got back into the phone, and went through the initial setup process, System is now using 31.9/32GB. I can't even finish installing all the default Apple apps! I tried restoring from my backup, but it says there isn't sufficient space. Any suggestions on how to get this thing to repartition properly? [link] [comments]
Fix for Caps Lock delay on MacBook Pro (High Sierra)? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:30 PM PST Background: I'm a heavy terminal and emacs user. I use Caps Lock as a control key and do all cursor movements with the control key. I have an iMac that has been tracking all the OS upgrades, and not run into this problem. Its using a wireless Apple keyboard. I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to High Sierra, and I cannot turn off the Caps Lock delay. Its actually rendering my terminal useless. I keep trying to jump back to the beginning of the line and it just leaves an 'a' at my cursor. Emacs is the same way. I have tried: 1) Twiddling the Caps lock to "no action" and back from the Modifier Keys window 2) Setting the delay to the lowest possible setting in Accessibility > Keyboard 3) Karabiner None of these have worked. This computer was working fine on 10.10 just a day ago --- this isn't a hardware issue. If anyone has the secret defaults write sauce, I'd greatly appreciate being able to use my computer to do work again. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:21 PM PST I'm trying to restore my son's iPhone 5s because of a lost PIN, but I'm quite dysfunctional when it comes to anything Apple. I followed the steps described here (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263) but the phone doesn't force open iTunes to restore. If I open manually, i still don't get the popup option to restore. Can someone show me the err of my ways? [link] [comments]
Need help and advice about iCloud family Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:28 AM PST Hello everyone!. In my family (we are four) we all use Apple Products and each one of us use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and I use an iPod so we share Purchases, Downloads, iTunes Library, Apple Music etc. and of course we have problems when we try to link devices to our Apple ID (it has a maximum of 10 per Apple ID). So, I thought about creating an iCloud Family for sharing everything I mentioned before with the bonus of using iCloud separately one from another... but I have some questions: -I know that per Apple ID you can link 10 devices so if I create a family with new Apple ID's will I be able o link more than 10?. (I'm planning to create 3 other 'family members', so they can link their Apple products without problem?) -Will it create different Apple Music Libraries? [link] [comments]

This is a coworker's laptop that has been giving him issues for a little while recently. At the time we were running 10.13.2 using FileVault total disk encryption. His user account was Standard, with a separate administrator account set up. Initially the problems manifested as Excel being the only Office application he couldn't activate over the Internet, despite repeated reinstalltions. Tier 2 Microsoft support was unable to fix this. Later he was unable to connect his iPhone to his computer due to resources being unavailable. I told him to reboot the system, and the system would never completely boot, no matter what user we tried to log in as. Further analysis showed a corrupt Object Map in the APFS filesystem. Disk Utility was unable to repair this problem, so I backed up the SSD by cloning it to an external drive, and reinstalled macOS 10.13 from a USB installer prepared on a healthy system. As part of this reinstallation I completely cleared out the file system and APFS containers, and creating a new GPT from scratch. This system only lasted for about 16 hours before manifesting an issue where the file system had over-allocated the SSD, and was unable to be properly accessed. My initial prognosis was SSD failure, given the age of the drive and the fact that we were seeing multiple filesystem errors. However my boss got it into his head that this was possibly an issue caused by Outlook, as this particular coworker had previously had issues with Outlook over time, and the last reported thing he had done with the system since the last time I fixed it was use Outlook. At this point we pulled another spare off the shelf, used Migration Assistant to restore his profile to that spare, until we were thoroughly satisfied that we had tracked down the issue with the MacBook Air. We set his temporary spare up with a Time Machine disk to simplify things moving forward. I reinstalled macOS 10.13 for a second time, again clearing the disk of all existing APFS containers and creating a new GPT. This time we handed the laptop off to another coworker to use and do progressive testing of the system's reliability before returning it. At this stage FileVault was not re-enabled, nor was Office installed. It was used purely as a web browser. After 24 hours of this working we installed Outlook only, and found the system stable and reliable for another 18 hours. At this point I took the laptop, used the Migration Assistant to move the user back to the MacBook Air from the Time Machine backup. All was well, until the user began attempting to use Apple Mail (as they had been encouraged to do by others), and syncing their IMAP mailbox filled the SSD to capacity. This is where things get strange for me, because this is what macOS was reporting:
These numbers don't quite add up. Used Space and Volume Size are correct, but Free Space and Capacity don't make sense to me. My guess is to go back to my initial prognosis and say the SSD is failing and the diminished capacity is due to all the burned out NAND on the SSD, and this is just macOS's way of showing it, but I'd like some confirmation about that. Problem is this isn't the answer anyone wants to hear as we are operating on a less-than-$0 budget at this stage in the game, and shelling out $160 for a replacement SSD probably isn't an option. Alternative resources beyond simply duct taping a USB HDD to the chassis and using that as a boot drive would be appreciated, including third party SSD replacements that are less expensive, or ways of kajiggering the system to boot off less expensive conventional m.2 SSDs. Picking the right adhesive tape for iMac 27" Late 2013 Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:57 AM PST Is there any quality difference? AirPods audio constantly cutting out only while using with MacBook Air Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:50 AM PST They cut out about every 15 seconds. It's fixed after I reset the bluetooth module and Macbook, as well as reset the AirPods to factory. However, when I use them on my iPhone then switch them back to MacBook, it starts again consistently. My location does not matter (same at school and home). No issues with my iPhone 6s plus or iPad 6th gen. Only an issue with my 2017 MacBook Air running up-to-date Mojave. Thank you for your wisdom [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro 2015 Battery issues Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:03 AM PST Hi All, I have a 2015 MacBook Pro Retina 15'' running 10.14.1 with a 2.5GHz i7 and 16GB RAM that has recently exhibited some odd issues that I think are related to the battery. Sometimes, when I come to open the lid after a while of inactivity (e.g. first thing in the morning) the lock-screen will appear as usual but after a few seconds just go black. During this time I can see that the battery % is nowhere near 0. After attempts to wake, I might get the 'please charge me' graphic flash onscreen, but other times nothing will display. Once I plug it in to the mains, it boots fine and the battery % is where it was when I first tried. I've seen this happen with up to '52%' remaining. Annoyingly, when it boots it acts like it's crashed or suddenly died (it probably has) and all my apps/documents/tabs are closed. I've had this laptop for just over 3 years and I had a 3-year apple care plan, and now it's started to have this issue. Is there anything I can do or should I bring it in to a store? Thanks [link] [comments]
2014 MacBook Pro screen reflective coating repair. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:59 AM PST I bought my MacBook Pro in August of 2014 and just recently learned that that weird spots on my screen are a defect, however Apple only fixes them for free up to 4 years and I'm a few months out of that now. Has anyone had any luck getting these replaced after the four years? I talked to an Apple rep on the phone and she said I might be able to because purchased Apple Care and never used it.
