Went to Genius Bar to get battery replaced, left with an even more broken phone. Posted: 25 Dec 2018 10:32 AM PST I got my battery replaced at the Genius Bar yesterday. When I left, I realized that my home button was broken (Reachability overresponsive on lock screen) and Touch ID no longer worked. This morning, I found out the touch screen casing was not properly sealed and my top speakers are broken as well. I need to go back to get this fixed. Does anyone know if these repair damages will be covered by the battery repair's limited warranty? I'm worried that they will not take fault for these damages and that I will have to repair costs for them. [link] [comments] |
Emergency: accidentally added $100 to my Apple ID!!! How to return it? Posted: 25 Dec 2018 01:14 PM PST I was trying to check my balance on my ID and I accidentally funded $100 to my account with the credit card! How do I charge this back and can I? [link] [comments] |
OSX Mojave desktop runs off the sides of monitor? Posted: 25 Dec 2018 08:29 PM PST After installing OSX Mojave on an iMac with a Coby monitor, the desktop itself runs off the sides of the monitor screen. How can I force OSX to reduce the size of the desktop itself (and not just windows on the desktop)? I've checked and the Coby monitor has no settings to decrease the size of the viewing area. I want to get to the OSX menu bar at the top of the screen (currently, it is above the top of the monitor screen) and get the dock to fit on the screen since it runs off the bottom. Thanks! My Mac is still trying to boot into Windows 10. Posted: 25 Dec 2018 05:33 PM PST Last night I used the Boot Camp Assistant to create a partition for Windows on my new Mac. Half way through installation, I shut down my laptop and booted back on to the Macintosh partition. I then went to my disk utility and selected the boot camp drive and removed the partition. Now when I restart my laptop, it boots into windows and claims something is wrong. So now I have to hold the option key and select my Mac partition. Is there any way I can remove the Windows "partition" even though it's not listed in my disk utility? Side note: When I chose my start up disk upon restarting, it showed a Windows and a Macintosh drive. But I cannot find a Windows start up disk in my settings or in my disk utility. Hope someone can help me get rid of these files! [link] [comments] |
iPhone X screen is unresponsive. Will they replace it if the back is cracked? Posted: 25 Dec 2018 09:40 PM PST Once before, this summer, the top half of my iPhone X (Nov 2017) began responding to ghost inputs, which I believe is a problem with the screen's digitizer. No problem, I made a Genius Bar appointment and a couple of hours later they replaced the screen free of charge. Easy. Tonight, all of the sudden, the entire screen stopped responding. Force restart did nothing, I tried to DFU restore but I can't get through it because, again, the screen is not responding. I expect them to replace the screen again free of charge; however, the glass back of the phone is significantly cracked due to previous damage. This damage is a few months old, and I've done nothing since then that would impair the phone and did nothing to precipitate the screen breaking (the phone was in my pocket all night, as I was at a Christmas party). (TLDR) Is there any chance they'll refuse to fix the front for free given that I've damaged the back in a separate incident? Can they just claim it's damage sustained from the back drop (which would be false) and make me pay? Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
4K, USB-C external monitor recommendation? Posted: 25 Dec 2018 08:58 PM PST I can't afford a 5k monitor. Does anyone recommend a 4K, USB-C monitor to attach to my 2017 MBP? I know a lot of people have trouble with scaling issues. So, i'm not sure 🤔. I'm going to use the monitor primarily for writing JavaScript and reading documentation on MDN, blogs, etc. [link] [comments] |

MyFix - fsroot tree error and Error: warning inode_val invalid bsd_flags disk utility Posted: 25 Dec 2018 08:37 PM PST So this is my story and what I found along the way - spoiler alert - I managed to find a solution, save all my data without any reinstalls and with a help of carbon copy cloner. Further more - I tried all the online solutions that I managed to find so this is what I came up with. May be crude but it is working. For computer savvy people the terminology should be OK. If there are questions let me know. TL;DR version - There is NO EASY FIX for these issues :/
The storyline mode: I have started with upgrading to Mojave and getting the fsroot tree error. While this error was happening in DiskUtility the booting time of my 15" 2017 MBP was about 2min. After I fixed the container issues everything is up and running in 20sec. P.S. I have tried the CMD+R and running disk util from there as well as CMD+S while booting to try the fsck from there. None has worked. P.P.S. Disk Warrior has currently (December 2018) NO publicly available version to fix APFS errors on internal nor external drives. It can only recover the files from the corrupt APFS drive if the drive is external. P.P.P.S. I have my main drive split between Bootcamp and MacOS. Even though I have made a backup of my BootCamp partition the Bootcamp partition was not affected by this fix and will be usable backup option for booting your computer if something goes wrong. ;) I am in China so on the past 12.12. I bought a Colorful SSD 1TB in size for $90. And that in an external housing sorted quite a few of the issues connected to space and storage as my MBP is 512GB version. What I did first and learned from that... I had my internal drive formatted APFS and I have formatted the external drive to APFS. (Don't do it for recovery purposes - I'll tell you why). I ran CCC (carbon copy cloner) and copied all the data from my primary SSD to the external SSD drive. I used WinClone to make a backup of my Bootcamp partition just in case. After that was said and done - I have restarted the computer and went into the recovery mode. Used the disk utility to format the drive and test it. (empty drive, I know, but I'm a stickler). Reinstalled a fresh copy of Mojave. Restarted the computer and ran disk utility again. Seems clean. Went back and booted the system from the backup drive and cloned everything back. No fsroot tree error but I got the inode_val invalid bad_flags errors - on both internal and external drives. The error was 0x184 but the locations differed due to different drive sizes. By seeing the errors in sequence I figured out that the CCC copied all data from one APFS container to another. That there was no issues with the drives what-so-ever - but the nature of the problem was purely SW based. So what I did was - I reformatted the external drive from APFS to HFS+. Cloned all contents to it. Disk utility showed no inode errors. Booted everything again from the backup drive. Reformatted the internal drive to HFS+ and then back to APFS. Cloned all contents back to the main drive. Restarted and ran disk utility - No issues show. System now boots in 20sec. All my data is safe and I used about 6h troubleshooting and copying 350gb back and forth. (35-40min per direction) Now my external drive is HFS+ and my internal is running APFS with no issues. Connecting new device somehow wiped ALL my CD music from iTunes. Posted: 25 Dec 2018 06:48 PM PST A very strange thing happened. I connected a brand new device I got this Christmas to my computer, I installed everything from an old device onto here, and for some reason it downloaded everything EXCEPT all the CD music I have. Strange I think, so I disconnect this device and go into my computer iTunes, and blamo, it deleted all my CD music from there too. All my CD music I've downloaded onto iTunes is gone. It IS on another device but when I try and download it from THIS device it doesn't allow me to. Please please someone help if they can! EDIT: I should also mention that I updated iTunes this evening, if that has anything to do with it [link] [comments] |
Can I use OSX v10.14.2 on a Lenovo 120s? Posted: 25 Dec 2018 06:42 PM PST Hi r/applehelp, I hope you had a jolly Christmas! I have a Lenovo 120s and recently spent £60 getting Linux Ubuntu installed, because Windows 10 which was initially installed on it was a pain in the ass, but I can't get used to the lack of compatible software, and having to use command line I am used to OSX and I get along with its easy to use platform. So I was wondering if it is possible for me to install it OSX 10.14.2 onto my 120s. I know it doesn't have a lot of storage so I was planning to use a 1TB SSD for that instead and use the storage that comes with it only for the OS. Thank you! :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Dec 2018 05:35 PM PST My MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014, Mojave 10.14.2) keeps crashing, I have sent my mac to a shop to get the GPU replaced and the thermal paste as well as they said it was what was causing the problem but after replacement, it's still crashing! When I turn on my mac and after a few minutes it would shut down. Other times, I could be watching youtube and it would shut down, i cant exactly pinpoint any activity that i'm doing that would cause this. I have to press the power button to turn it on and there isn't any message/report. I don"t live in a country with an official Apple store, only a authorise reseller. I'm going to send this back to the shop but anybody has any clues to what the problem is? [link] [comments] |
Macbook Air 2014 black screen on startup Posted: 25 Dec 2018 06:04 AM PST Hi there I'm sitting in front of my friends Macbook Air 2014 now and when I boot it up I can hear the chime and see that the screen changes to a different shade of black but nothing happens. I've tried resetting PRAM & SMC 20+ times and also followed step 19 here: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Air+13-Inch+Mid+2013+Display+Assembly+Replacement/15407 Tried booting with the Option key pressed to boot from a USB but that didn't work either. Considering if my next step should be to buy a MiniDisplay to HDMI so that I can connect it to my TV to see if that works. Since this brings a charge though I was hoping that someone maybe have some tips for me? The fun thing is twice (out of the hundreds of times I've tried turning it on and off, I get to the screen with box with a questionmark in it. You know when you usually boot with the Option key pressed and re-installs. This has happened twice so I doubt the screen is damaged as such. Cheers [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Dec 2018 05:19 PM PST I just bought my wife a used 2012 Macbook Pro running 10.7 Lion. I wanted to upgrade to newer version of Mac OS (preferably Mojave) and I am unable to do anything when it comes to updating. The app store won't let me download anything (error message stating that I need 10.8 or newer to download any app) and when I go to the boot menu to reinstall latest update, the same 10.7 Lion is the most recent. I have connected to internet to receive updates and nothing more recent comes up. I go to the updates section on the App Store and it's empty. I click on software update in the apple menu and it says everything is up to date. I only have a Windows 10 but I can't find any way to download the installer for a USB. Can someone please point me the right direction here? Thanks so much for the time! [link] [comments] |
I'm having trouble making a truly blank USB drive. Posted: 25 Dec 2018 04:38 PM PST Hey guys, I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running Sierra. I also have one of those fancy schmancy touchscreen car stereos, and I've been having an issue with it that was fixed in the lastest firmware update. The problem is that updating it has been a bitch. It requires that I insert a USB drive, formatted to FAT32, containing ONLY the update zip. As you guys are probably aware, that's basically impossible. Mac automatically creates Apple Double files (easy to delete), as well as the spotlight index directory and the .fseventsd directory. I've tried everything: -You can show hidden files in Finder and delete those directories, but that will create the .Trashes directory, which can't be deleted because that's the place deleted files go. The fucked up part is that, when formatting my USB with Paragon NTFS, I accidentally formatted my Windows partition so my last possible operating system to try is now gone. My stereo refuses to do the update if even one other file or folder, hidden or visible, is present. Is thos even possible? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Dec 2018 04:25 PM PST Hey guys, I'm currently using a very old Mac Pro 1.1 as a server running 10.6.8, it has 4 HDDs that are paired for RAID 1 and they're finally running out of space. I bought 4 new drives and created an identical RAID structure in the hope of using CCC to simply clone the volumes and everything went well... until I plugged them into a slightly better machine, the Mac Pro 3.1. It boots, sees all the drives, sees the RAID and mounts all the volumes, network accounts are available and I can even login. But I have a couple of issues... It's mounting all the hidden "Boot OS X" partitions per volume, as you can see here in Finder: https://imgur.com/G9PzpEv. Here's Disk Utility displaying all volumes: https://imgur.com/OWDD6Rv & https://imgur.com/lxhvK3o. And Terminal: https://imgur.com/Ip0N9p3. And here's what I see when I hold option at boot: https://imgur.com/7R1U2Ci. Although I'm not sure if this one is normal or not, I'm pretty sure it should only be displaying the unified SYSTEM volume and not the two partitions. I booted into a clean version of 10.6.3 from an external drive on the same machine and everything looks fine, here are those same screens... Finder: https://imgur.com/nTYbINA The biggest difference I see is that all the "Boot OS X" volumes are unmounted. But why is there a difference? Is this an issue with some file/setting/preference on the SYSTEM drive? Or how the machine is recognising the RAID? There's also a permissions issue for all network users, when they login they don't have the correct permissions to open or do anything. This was partly expected but both the original and new drives have the exact same permissions and I'm wondering if this is related to the RAID/mounting issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Posted: 25 Dec 2018 04:18 PM PST I left my MacBook unattended(without locking my screen) for 1 minute (while I went to the bathroom) in the school library. Fell for a phishing scam: Now what?? Posted: 25 Dec 2018 03:53 PM PST I fell for a phishing scam with my apple ID. It was a dumb mistake, but I made it. Posted: 25 Dec 2018 11:53 AM PST Merry Christmas everyone! I have an iPhone X and I left it on the bathroom counter for approximately 15 minutes while I showered this morning. The counter must have been wet, because after I got out, I noticed that I was getting artifacts on the display. I restarted the phone to no avail, in fact, it got even worse, with the display completely shutting down. At this point, the phone is sitting inside a bag of rice, and I'm praying that it returns to its previous condition. Is there anything else I can do? This phone does not have AppleCare so getting it repaired by Apple would likely be incredibly expensive. [link] [comments] |
[10.14 Mojave] Does Dropbox need access to iCloud Dirve? Posted: 25 Dec 2018 05:21 AM PST When you access iCloud Drive settings in Mojave, if you scroll down I see Dropbox being checked off. Can I safely uncheck Dropbox? I don't know what that means. I also have Dropbox on my Mac but I don't use iCloud Drive and Dropbox in tandem. [link] [comments] |
Storage full on Iphone X but storage manager says otherwise Posted: 25 Dec 2018 11:15 AM PST Has anyone had any experience with an Iphone X saying that it's low/out of storage space but storage manager reports plenty of open space? My girlfriend's Iphone reports having 30GB of data free but also reports being low on space. After connecting to my PC my computer reports it only having 3GB of space free which seems much more accurate. We've updated IOS to 12.1.2 and deleted a few movies to see if it would fix it. She definitely doesn't have 64GB of content on the phone. If anyone has any experience on how to fix this or even what causes it that would be very helpful. Picture attached below. Apple Pencil Gen 1 won’t stay connected to iPad 6th generation Posted: 25 Dec 2018 10:55 AM PST I bought my daughter a first generation Apple Pencil along with a iPad 6th generation. It connects to the pencil when I plug it in but it shows "Not Connected" after I unplug it. Anybody have similar experience and possible resolution? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
