I know many general aviation pilots use iPads in cockpits and it sucks having to use a big ass iPad when the mini works better especially as a kneeboard.

    Please apple.

[Parody] Pad Pro Bends. So Does Every Tablet...

PSA: Your new iPad Pro 2018 Probably Won't Bend or Break

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 11:38 PM PST

So, there has been a lot of reaction to JerryRigEverything's bend test of the iPad. Usually I like Zach's videos. He has a strong understanding of science and engineering, and his vidoes are fun and informative.

However, the way in which he describes the durability of the 2018 iPad Pro is very misleading. First, let's talk about how he is correct.

Yes, the iPad Pro 2018 is likely the most fragile iPad Apple has ever made. The 90 degree edges do not dissipate force as well as curved ones. It is made of thin aluminum, and there is no internal structural support. It bends easier than any other iPad, and probably more easily than almost any other tablet on the market (that isn't very cheap or off market garbage).

However, the language Zach uses in the video makes it seem like your iPad could easily bend from being in your backpack as you lean against a wall, or from someone sitting on it. It's timing in the video forces teases you to imagine leaning against your backpack to find a destroyed iPad inside. Zach disagrees greatly with many of the design decisions Apple makes, and those opinions made for a misleading video.

Unless you treat your devices with reckless abandon, I find it very unlikely that you would end up bending your iPad.

Because of how long the iPad is, Zach has lots of leverage on the device to impart huge bending stress on the iPad. Zach is a very strong guy, so busting up the iPad was no problem for him. But in everyday scenarios, you aren't deliberately imparting maximum bend stress on your device. Mostly it is being compressed along it's thinnest axis. In your backpack, on a seat cushion, in a briefcase, you will not be imparting a force on the device in a way that is structurally compromising. The whole media extravaganza is sensationalist garbage based off of a fun but misleading youtube video. You don't need to go out and buy a case for your iPad because you are afraid it is going to bend. You don't need a new backpack, or steel reinforcements, or any of that garbage. You iPad is going to be fine. Just treat it with the respect you would treat $1500 of cash in your backpack, and live your life.

TL;DR - The JerryRigEverything video makes it seem like you could seriously bend your device during normal use. In normal use, forces on the iPad won't catastrophically or significantly bend it.

iPad 6th Gen - iOS 12 worth it?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 11:25 AM PST

Hi all, got a 6th gen 9.7" iPad in May 2018 and I have been loving it. I know when iOS 12 first came out there were a lot of issues with the iPad distro. Now that we're up to 12.1, is it worth it to upgrade? Shortcuts aren't really a concern to me. Do the gestures and multitasking still work well?

Backpack Recommendations for MBP and iPad Pro

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 05:25 AM PST

Does anyone have recommendations for a backpack with two pouches, that can fit a 15" MacBook Pro and a 12.9" iPad Pro?

I'm ideally looking for a slim backpack design, and one that provides adequate padding/protection for both pouches and is ideally waterproof.

I was originally thinking of putting both in one pouch, though I tried that on my current backpack and found it less than ideal.

I tried looking at Herschel and Timbuk2, though it's not obvious if any models online offer this, and the ones I saw in store are all single pouch.

How is notability on the new iPad pros and pencil 2s?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 12:42 PM PST

Wondering if the double tap feature makes writing notes a little faster for you now or if it's basically the same. I don't see a lot yet about utilizing the double tap feature yet. Wish there was a option to use double tap into straight lines too.

I’ve always hated drawing, but I wanted to give it a chance on my new pro. What do you guys think?

Take note app developers, you don't need to be a drawing or writing app to take advantage of the Apple Pencil 2 and it's gestures

How poor is the lap-typing experience on the new Pros and smart keyboards?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 06:49 AM PST

This of course isn't the main reason I'm considering buying a Pro, but I have a trip coming up in a couple of weeks where I will likely have to do some work from the road while my partner drives. I know the smart keyboards aren't ideal for lap-use due to the limited angles available, but how bad is it?

Also, any suggestions on making the experience better?

Any decent glass screen protectors out there for Pro 11”?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 03:44 AM PST

I've tried two so far from Amazon and both have significantly reduced screen sensitivity. At first I thought the latest one was working okay but after more thorough use it's definitely causing some taps/swipes to not register. Strangely, the 10.5" that it'll be replacing has been working fine with a screen protector for the past year.

Maybe I'll just have to go back to not using one like I did with the Air 2.

Portrait mode keyboard accidentally registers carriage return because of small bezels on gen 3 iPad

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 07:04 AM PST

The new 12.9" iPad is great but typing in portrait mode while holding the iPad upright seems way worse than my prior gen 1: the smaller bezels mean I'm consistently accidentally hitting "shift" or "return" with my left/right hand (for example "my right hand" initially came out as "my rihTHNd as").

Auto correct doesn't seem to apply to this ether, so the weird letters/words that come out just persist until I fix it manually.

    AnyoNe else seeing this?

It definitely only happens when I'm holdinG tHE IPad upright, with the corners in the base of my fingers, my other fingers around the back, typing witH both thumbs. Holding It any other way doesn't Result in this problem.

(Ps it's slightly cathartic to leave these typos in this post... I've had to fix it manually everyplace else!).

Quite frustrating! Hopefully it's either PEBCAK or a setting somehow.

IPad Pro 3rd Gen (12.9" and 11") WiFi Issue due to USB C Adapters?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 12:21 AM PST

Hi All, I have seen several threads online on Reddit and on official apple discussion forum regarding WiFi cutting out intermittently. The fix currently is to disconnect the adapter and reconnect it. Not sure if its software or hardware related. Most common USB C adapter is affected is the Apple USB C to 3.5MM Adapter

Wanted to open up a discussion thread to summarize the issues.

Do you have a screen protector on your iPad and does it cripple the use of the pencil in any way?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 01:40 AM PST

After I ordered my iPad I immediately went to look for a case and a screen protector but the reviews on every screen protector so far have been really negative.

Some points I read alot where

    • Face ID doesn't work
    • Mostly low quality (peels of quickly)
    • Touch screen not working properly

Any advice is welcome because I feel anxious when using my devices without proper protection.

EDIT: iPad Pro 11" and Apple Pencil 2nd gen. Btw!

Looking for a back cover similar to this..

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 04:38 AM PST

I used this on my 10.5 iPad. I don't like the added bulk of a folio, and when I draw on the 12.9, I like just having protection on the back. I used to use something like this with my keyboard folio, now I can't.. so I'll have to take it in and out when I'm done.

Is there anything like this for the 2018 12.9? I can't find ANYTHING.

For a non-creative, is there anything the Apple Pencil 2 is good for?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 09:40 PM PST

I really want to get it but I can't think of anything else that I can do with it. I prefer to type all my notes. Is there anything the pencil is good for, for those that don't create content?

Quality Control Issues with Apple Pencil

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 08:47 PM PST

I'm just wondering if other people have noticed an uptick in quality control issues with their Apple accessories, like the pencil.

I just got a replacement for a pencil that was defective, only to open the new box at home and realize that this pencil is also defective! The tip is completely slanted and off center. I tried removing the tip and reinstalling it, but the issue persists.

Sigh. Another trip to the Apple Store I guess...

On a related note, I also picked up an 11" iPad Pro and the antenna insert on the back was all askew and not remotely flush with the aluminum body. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but this is starting to get annoying.
