iPad Keyboard folio, a 2-day review

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 11:07 AM PST

Recently picked up the new keyboard folio case for my 11" iPad Pro. Here's a few things I noticed after using it a few days that I really haven't heard people talking about, and some potential concerns I have with it.

It's a slim case - very slim. I fear that if the iPad were to fall, there's really not much protection for the sides of the device, or the screen if its open and in use. The magnets are strong, but with enough force, the iPad can become detached with not a lot of effort. I bought an invisible skin to protect the iPad while in the keyboard folio, which will offer some additional protection.

Another thing I noticed is that it does not tell you when Caps Lock is on. I find myself often writing out full sentences before I looked at what I typed only to find out it was all capitalized. I wish this keyboard had a caps-lock light on the key itself, or maybe an on-screen notification that Caps is on.

The Keyboard key is in the lower left corner, and I often find myself striking it by accident quite often and bringing up the emoji keyboard.

Only 2 screen positions- come on Apple...

Other than that, it's pretty good for typing things out in a pinch. I hope to be using it for writing papers as I'm in grad school now. Honestly, I didn't want to purchase this case due to it's lack of protection but I will be traveling for the holidays so I needed something with a keyboard and 3rd party alternatives are just not out there yet.

Why I Returned My New iPad Pro.

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 11:06 AM PST

    Hey everyone!

Thought this post would be helpful for anyone looking into buying a new iPad Pro! This is just my personal experience but I hope it helps someone doing some research.

I am a 28 year old who has a full-time job but also is in a Master's Degree program so I tried to use this in a way where it would be for personal/professional/educational purposes.

First thing, this is the best tablet on the market and it isn't even close. In fact, this is probably the best mobile device that I have ever used. The screen is beautiful, it is so thin, and it is extremely light! Even the 12.9 inch form factor was not an issue at all and didnt feel too big. The multi-tasking on this iPad is so snappy and quick and I havent experienced something this responsive ever in my opinion.

The downfall for me is that I own a top of the line desktop and I was trying to force myself to utilize the iPad as much as possible to justify the purchase. I found myself getting frustrated when trying to do school work when bouncing between Word, Canvas, Safari, etc. It is so much nicer on the laptop/desktop to have more than two windows open at once for school work. Now, I know that the iPad isnt a replacement for a PC/Laptop but when you are spending $1000 on the iPad, $200 on the keyboard folio, and $120 on the Pencil, you need to be able to justify why you spent that much money on a device that essentially is a mix between your iPhone and Laptop. I found myself consistently going back to my laptop/desktop to perform tasks.

At work, I found it the most useful for taking notes, marking up PDF's, signing documents, etc. That was great and really the only reason I contemplated keeping the device. But for $1320 total, I will just stick with the pen/paper for now lol.

Overall, if you have the money to spend and you currently utilize your iPad, then make the jump! If you are someone who does not own an iPad and you are unsure about how much you will use it, I would recommend going on ebay and getting one of the older iPad Pro's to see if you enjoy it. For me personally, I dont think if you are a designer currently that you are going to see much improvement aside from less charging of the Apple Pencil. If you are anyone else who currently has an iPad Pro and you are on a budget, I dont think the gap in performance is worth the price disparity. I would continue to use your current iPad Pro and wait a few years!

Hope this helps and I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has!

Despite the high price, the smart folio (non-keybord) looks great, but “feels” cheap. What are better alternatives?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:02 PM PST

Picked up my iPad Pro yesterday along with cover and I'm in love with the iPad but I'm not impressed by the folio. So I think I'll be returning it and hopefully I can find a cheaper and better quality alternative.

    What are you currently using?

I'm keeping my eye on this because it's not ready for production yet. Other options I should consider?

My plan is to keep the folio until I can find a better alternative then return it to the apple store.

    Protection for IPP 11

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 04:31 AM PST

What does everyone recommend for cases/screen protectors.

I ordered a temporary case of Amazon till I find one I really like.

For those that use sleeves how do you like it? What are the pros and cons?

How about a full enclosure case such as UAG?

Also has their been any viable screen protectors released that wont mess with face ID?

Free/cheap ipad writing app that can save as Word document?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 11:41 AM PST

    Hi,

I use Microsoft Word for writing on my laptop and would like to be able to write on my ipad too - to be able to essentially switch between the laptop and ipad. Currently i'm copying and pasting the text into emails and opening them in my ipad in a free writing app. Thing is i don't want to pay for Word on my ipad, i just need an app that can save-out/open Word files...is there a free (or cheap) app that exists for this?

Question about split view on IPP 12.9

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 05:37 AM PST

I'm going to be going from an iPad 2017 to an IPP 12.9. I see where split view on all the smaller iPad's uses Compact (iPhone UI) mode whereas the 12.9 is the only one to use Regular (iPad UI) mode.
What does this mean from a practical point of view? Does it mean apps like Facebook that don't like doing split view on the smaller iPad's will work on the 12.9?

The new iPad 12.9” doesn’t really display video all that much larger

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST

The difference between the 11" and new 12.9" isn't all that much for watching video.

That new ratio on the 11" really closes the gap. Check out the comparisons

For drawing, the 12.9 wins hands down.

For web surfing, it's kind of a toss-up for me. Sure you can see more of the webpage, but the text on that webpage also looks smaller (at least in landscape).

I was dead set on the 12.9, but after comparing video side by side (my #1 use case), I think I'm going to get the 11".

Clear case that’s compatible with keyboard?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST

I had the 10.5 iPad Pro, and there are tons of clear cases that have the side cut out to accommodate the Apple keyboard. Why do the new models not have cases like this? Does the keyboard connect in a different way now? Or has there been any companies stating they would be coming out with models like this soon?

Upgrade from iPad Pro 12.9 Inch (2015) to iPad Pro 11 Inch (2018)?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:06 PM PST

I have just recently acquired the ipad pro 12.9 inch model 128GB gen 1 with additional accessories (keyboard and pencil) for around 950$ CAD a little over a week ago. I am considering selling the ipad pro gen 1 for 650$ CAD and returning the accessories in order to purchase the iPad Pro 11 inch 256GB model that should run me about $1,200CAD. The reason I am considering the new iPad is because of the battery issues I am experiencing with the iPad I currently have, also because the new iPad just looks freakin' awesome. Should I make the jump or should I just stick with what I have?

Your bets on the next iOS - can it make the iPad even more powerful?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 11:20 AM PST

I'm standing in front of tough decision. I'm an owner of late 2017 MBPro and now I'm considering buying the new iPad - I feel like l I'd need to have this kind of mobile device where I could sharpen my drawing skills, use iPad for all kinds of design, photo editing etc. - basically most of the stuff I do on my MacBook, except of software development. One thing bothers me a lot - the price vs the iOS limitations. So I wanted to ask you (at the same time I understand it's relatively early for such threads) what are the chances that folks at Apple are likely to introduce bunch of useful features in iOS 13 like support for external drives, better experience for people using multiple apps at once, etc. - basically things the whole internet is talking about right now. Could I consider buying this iPad as an investment that is very likely to return within the next few months?
