    Deals on 15" Macbook Pro

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 11:12 AM PST

I've been looking for about a year for a deal on a 15" Macbook Pro - when/where are the deals to be had on these? I don't mind if it's a 2017, but I haven't seen any in the 1500-1600 range for a long time now...

    MacBook Pro 2017 Preformance Question

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 08:22 PM PST

So I'm not 100% sure if this is the best place to ask this, but I'm gonna ask anyway.

So the situation is I am planning to purchase the 13.3-inch refurbished MacBook Pro 2.3 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with retina display computer off the Apple site (It is the June 2017 model).

I was wondering if anyone knows how well this computer preforms when gaming (And more specifically the game League of Legends because that is the game I really care about and play a lot).

Just a couple things to note:

1.) I have ZERO problems with playing on the worst / most optimized settings in order to achieve higher fps.

    2.) 2.3 Ghz Dual Core i5 Processor

3.) And the most important thing.... the graphics card is the Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640.

Final note: I know the graphics card, which is the most important part of a computer when it comes to gaming, is not really optimized for gaming... but does anyone know from past, current, or other experience if League of Legends, or games like it, can run at either the lowest or maybe decent settings with okay fps? (ideally 50-60+)

Thank you all so much... I am so confused rn :/

Help finding an aluminum shell case

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 02:57 PM PST

Hey y'all - I just bought a 13" MacBook Pro (I love it) but am worried about heat dispersion - I have a clear plastic case/skin on it right now. The area of aluminum above the keyboard gets pretty hot during heavy use (video editing, 4K streaming, etc). My worry is that the case is stopping the aluminum body from getting rid of the heat the way it was designed to. So, here I am looking for recommendations for an aluminum case (not a briefcase. Similarly shaped/sized to the case I have on it currently)

TL;DR can anyone point me to an aluminum shell cover for my 13"? I'm worried about heat dispersion with my plastic one.

Currently own a MacBook Air 2014 and trying to “upgrade” frugally.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 02:42 PM PST

I love my Air hands down. The battery is still decent and it always works fine with every day stuff such as browsing and Netflix even well having another document open.

However once I start working harder it starts to get very upset and lag. It only has 4gb of ram which makes sense as once I have multiple articles open as well as Microsoft Word and iTunes it is not the greatest.

I grabbed my late 2008 MacBook with 8gb of ram and it weirdly seemed to handle the multi tasking a little better than my air. However the battery isn't the greatest and it is 10 years old (I just keep it around for the rare instance I need a SuperDrive).

    These are my two choices:

-My dad offered me his broken 12" MacBook, which will cost $600-700 to repair.

-Or maybe get a 2012 or so Pro that I can put 16gb of ram in and a SSD for about $450 (including ram and ssd).

The MacBook is obviously newer, however it is small. If I were to get a pro it would likely be a 15 and it would have PORTS!

I will be using this for personal (email, web browsing, iTunes) as well as school work (keynote, pages, Microsoft suite, and 10+ tabs). Battery is not much of an issue anymore since I am only away from a charger for maximum 2 hours.

Would an older pro be alright or should I try to adjust to the portless life and the new weird keyboards

    High CPU Temp's on 2017 15" Base

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 01:59 PM PST

    Hello All,

I just got a 2017 Base laptop and I'm a little concerned with my cpu temps. At idle it seems okay around upper 30's to lower 40's and when just doing casual web browsing it's in the upper 40's to 60's but for example I've been playing Civ 5 on it and it is sitting at near 85-90 degrees C. The area near my Touch Bar is hot to the touch, however it sounds like the fans are barely running. To me it just seems that the fan's should be turning up earlier to prevent this crazy heat. For example I run Prime 95 and the fans get up to nearly 6000 rpm's and manage to keep the cpu around 90 degrees when cpu cores are running all out 100%, but when playing game which is not nearly stressing the cpu as bad as that, I barely hear fans...shouldn't they be running faster and trying to keep the temp a little lower.

Am I thinking t0o much or is this normal?

    Appropriate temperature for MBP13 2017

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST

A week ago i spilled some tea (about 4-5 drops) on my keyboard, i wiped it off asap, then cleaned keyboard. For now, nothing really changed, it works just as before, probably i'm just being paranoic, but is it ok for CPU to be around 45-49°C while surfing the internet and watching videos? (around 13 tabs are open in Chrome)

    Service Battery

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 01:24 AM PST

    Hi guys!

So I have been starting to get some problems with the battery on my MacBook Pro 15'' Retina Mid 2012. (Cycle Count: 618, Full Charge Capacity 6160, Condition: Service Battery)

The "Service battery" condition has been there for several months with no problems. But now the Mac is shutting down due to no battery left even though the battery displays - for example - close to 50%. After plugging in the charger I can boot up the MacBook again and it would then instantly display 38% charge left, even though it's behaving as if it was at 0%.

So...how long do you guys think I can keep going when having the MacBook plugged in 95% of the time anyway? In other terms: IF plugged in, will the MacBook be able to run even if the battery would die "completely"?

And: What would be the best option to replace the battery? I have no experience or knowledge with reparing or replacing components, so I am a bit shy of doing it myself by ordering the whole replacement kit from iFixit for like 70 bucks because it says it is pretty difficult to replace.

Any suggestions? I definitely want to keep the MBP Mid12 for at least another 2 years since it runs really flawlessly and the 2017 keyboard fucks me up. (I am typing a lot)

External Mic issues with Final Cut Pro (Latest Macbook)

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 06:22 AM PST

So I bought a new Macbook pro - 2018 model. I have to use an adapter so I can plug in my amp with my Shure SM7B External Mic. For some reason I am able to record via Voice memos app. However, When I try to record a voice over in FCP. It acts like its not recording. No level movements at all. But the mic appears in the input dropdown. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Is the 2018 macbook pro good for 3d modelling?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 01:52 AM PST

Hi everyone, I was wondering if there is anybody in the vfx or video game industry who finds it worth buying a macbook pro for using programs like Maya, Nuke, Unreal Engine 4 and Z-Brush. I am considering buying the £2699 15 inch model but I also have other options like buying the Dell XPS 15 or even building my own pc.

I mainly want to ask if it's worth buying a macbook specifically for that purpose.

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

Is there a big chance for a 12” MB refresh before 2019?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 03:25 AM PST

It hasn't been refreshed for over a year. Or do you guys think Apple is going to abandon this line?
