2018 MacBook Air vs 2017 MacBook Pro 13 Inch Non-Touch Bar? which one is better?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:48 PM PDT

I am really confused about the making a buying decision between 2018 MacBook Air or 2017 MacBook Pro non-touch bar, basically, I will be going for 16 GB Ram so the option now drills down to 1.6 8th gen i5 vs 2.3 7th gen i5 processor. I am a developer (web-based/machine learning beginner) occasionally uses photoshop and no editing works what so ever. Which one should I buy or wait apple to upgrade 8th gen processors to non-touch bar MacPro? if so how many more months should I wait

What are the differences between 2016 Macbook Pro TB vs 2018 Macbook Pro TB?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:17 PM PDT

Hi, so i have a 2016 13in Macbook Pro touchbar with 256gb ssd and 16gb ram, i5. Not thinking about upgrading, its just that im on my 3rd repair and I heard that one more and they might replace my 2016 with a new 2018. Im just curious what are the improvements I would be potentially getting. (Im not banking on this, just legitimately curious).

I know the 2018s have quad core compared to my dual core, truetone, and T2 but other than that? Are there any ssd speed improvements? ram improvements? I want to know the little details. If there is a website where I can compare the two that would be great. Thanks.

And also, if anyone upgraded from the 2016 to a 2018 are there actually big speed increases on day to day tasks? Because im not really sure I would even see/feel the differences.

Will the rumored vega gpus devalue existing 2018 MBPs?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 08:13 PM PDT

I just bought a mbp 15" a few weeks back. It's one of the top spec'd 15" models and probably more compute power than I need. Besides future proofing, I usually aim for higher spec'd machines to preserve resale value down the road.

I don't game on my macbook and I don't have many local workloads that take advantage of the gpu. Even the amd 560 is probably more than what I need, but should I look into reselling my machine and hold out for the vega? Will the vega gpus likely devalue my machine down the road?

I just recently purchase the new MacBook and I am looking to buy an external hard drive (1TB+) but it has to be USB-C compatible. Any thoughts?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:03 PM PDT

I was also considering getting an external drive with NFC-enabled communication just so I can see some of my private keys quickly and wirelessly.

Update my 2011 MBP or bite the bullet on a new machine?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:48 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have an early 2011 MBP that's slowing down a lot. I haven't replaced anything yet, but it'll need an SSD, a RAM upgrade, and a new battery, plus the MagSafe is on its last legs. Even with all these upgrades, I'm not sure how long it'll last.

Or I can spend up to $1500 on a new MacBook. I hate the new keyboards and lack of legacy ports and I'd rather not have a Touch Bar, but I also don't want to make the switch to Windows. I'm thinking either a refurb 2017 non-Touch Bar MBP with 16 GB RAM/256 GB SSD or a refurb 2018 MBP with 8 GB RAM/256 GB SSD. I also thought about the new MBA, but it would be $1400 for the model with 256 GB SSD.

Use: word processing, web browsing, and music production in Ableton Lite

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Air 2018 vs Pro non-tb 2017 vs iPad Pro (2018)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:21 PM PDT

Wondering which one would a better buy, as my Chromebook doesn't work for the things I will need to use from next semester onwards.. I can get the base models for $1149, and $1120 (open box) and $749 + tax respectively. My budget is $1250 with tax included.

My usage includes writing essays/reports (with multiple tabs and PDF files open), research, Citrix Receiver, IBM SPSS, ArcGIS Pro, MatLab, MicroCase, Youtube/Netflix, email, browsing reddit. I am currently in 2nd to last year of undergrad and will probably be doing an MS in Biostats after I graduate, so I am looking for something that will last me 5-7 years. I like the idea of Touch ID (though not really necessary) and the new keyboard (to avoid issues the 2nd gen butterfly keyboard had), but I'm not really sure if the Air 2018's processor will be good for that usage for that amount of time at least, or if the 2017 Pro non-tb is better for long term in terms of performance at the cost of having potential keyboard issues (though I read it was covered for 4 years by Apple, not sure if true?)

    Thank you!

    Gave up MacBook for iPad

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 04:48 PM PDT

I write. I write a lot. I have a 2015 MacBook 12 that has the worst keyboard in the universe (yes, I tried to return it, but that's another story). My fingers literally ache and I have finger joint pain. Typing is messy and slow and I make a lot of mistakes. Not only are the keys shallow, it takes a lot of force to press down on a key.

I was considering an HP or Lenovo laptop as a replacement. Or a Chromebook of some kind. Then my wife gave me her iPad 9.7". She prefers the mini. I had an Apple "Magic" Bluetooth keyboard laying around and with the built-in stand for the iPad, I now have a functioning "laptop."

You know what? This keyboard is amazing. It reminds me of an HP keyboard (which are a really good). Anyway, my typing speed is back up to 100 WPM or so and few mistakes. I no longer need the trackpad. Not really. I don't miss it. I have the iPad sideways and charging and I can sit back on the sofa (my office/desk) and type away. When I need to go edit a long, complex document, I suppose I can use the MacBook when the time comes, if I need to. You can use Google Docs to publish to ePub or directly to Kindle.

So a thumbs up to a good keyboard. I was hoping for the MacBook Air to remain unchanged, but have a good screen, but we see that didn't happen. I will try out the Air when it hits the stores next week, and perhaps wait for a new update to the MacBook, but honestly, maybe I can live without the laptop (for the most part). It's a $400 solution right now - iPad + keyboard.

Red Smudges on MacBook Pro 2012

I have these red smudges that appear to be the keys from the keyboard, does this have a fix or the only option is to replace the whole screen? Anybody else have had this problem?

Why the new MacBook Air isn’t ‘a bigger MacBook’

Difference between macbook pro 15in and retina version? Really confused...

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:19 AM PDT

So I'm looking to buy a macbook pro. While looking I saw that a local store offers to options.

The "cheaper" one is named APPLE MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar, space gray, i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 SSD, 2018

The more "expensive" one is named: APPLE MacBook Pro Retina 15" Touch Bar, silver, i7, 16GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, 2018

When I look at the specs they seem normal to me. It says that both have a "reinta" display 2880x1800px so I'm really confused. Why does the more "expensive" model cost about 150 more?

    Thanks for the clarification.

Buying a new Macbook Pro - Any advice welcome

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 04:59 AM PDT

Usually have a ton of stuff open and use photoshop and other pretty intensive programs. Wanting to hold onto this next one for as long as possible. What should I be going for? i7? 16gb or 32gb or RAM? Should I buy lower RAM and upgrade it myself?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:55 AM PDT

Hey guys, im a little confused over the difference across different gen MacBooks and im looking for a mac that is primarily for data analytical stuff. AWS is pretty much out of the question and my preference sways towards macOS. I have around USD 2K to play with and the touchbar is not important to me. I dont mind older gens so long the storage (as i work with quite a number of extracts) and processing speed. Please do advice, and if youre local to me, ill buy you coffee.

The real difference : 1.6 Ghz (air) vs 2.5 Ghz (pro)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:54 AM PDT

Macbook air (new) and macbook pro seem to have almost the same specs except the processor speed (air has a slower processer than pro).

The comparison between pro processor 2.5 Ghz (Intel® Core™ i5-8259U Processor) and air processor 1.6 Ghz (Intel® Core™ i5-8210Y Processor) is shown on intel site:

    https://ark.intel.com/compare/135935,189912

Specifically, look at the core performance and memory specifications. The difference is minimal but significant. If you have heavy load of work, programming or graphics etc, then macbook pro is your choice.

Not sure which mac laptop is best for me

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:03 AM PDT

I have 2016 mbp with touchbar with the base specs. Right now the screen is broken and would cost around $500 to repair. I have the option of buying the new macbook air with 16gb of memory and the 1.6 to 3.6ghz processor for $1799. My question is should I repair the screen on my current mbp or buy the new macbook air? I will need it for some light video editing as well as school work. I will also play some light gamea on it that do not require a lot of processing power.

Refurbished 13" MacBook Pro 2017 Touch Bar Seems Best Value Right Now for Performance and Features?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:17 AM PDT

Comparing 3 MacBooks with almost the same specs and price:

    - New 13" Macbook Air 1.6GHz i5 8th Generation 8GB Ram 256GB Storage ~ $1399

    - 13" MacBook Pro 2.3GHz i5 7th Generation 8GB Ram 256GB Storage (No Touch Bar) ~ $1499

    - Refurbished 2017 13" MacBook Pro 3.1GHz i5 7th Generation 8GB Ram 256GB Storage Touch Bar ~ $1439

It seems like the refurbished model offers the best balance of performance and features for the money.

How does the 3.1GHz i5 7th Generation processor fare against the new 1.6GHz i5 8th Generation processor found on the new MacBook Air?
