Tips to increase longevity of my new MBP? Posted: 17 Nov 2018 11:40 AM PST My old MBA lasted me a faithful 6 years, but now the battery is shot (unplugging results in instant death) and it's painfully slow. I just bought the 2018 15" MBP (2.6 GH, 512 gb SSD, 16 gb RAM) and I wanted to know if there are any tips for making sure this one lasts me 8+ years? I really want this one to last me longer than my old machine, and I paid 2x more for this one to increase specs to make sure that's the case. But now I want to know what I should do day-to-day to make it last. 6 years ago the advice was: charge your laptop fully, then let it drain to like 1% before recharging, never let it charge once its at 100%. But now the consensus from my google searches is that letting your laptop go down to 1% is atrocious for battery, and the sweet spot is 50%-80% but it's better to keep it charged? Anyone who can tell me if that's right? Also is it better to shut it down every night and turn it on in the morning, or keep it on sleep mode (i.e. lid closed) but not actually shut down? New 2018 Macbook Air thermal throttling HARD...normal? Posted: 17 Nov 2018 09:32 PM PST Picked up the new macbook air today. Noticed that 4k vp9 youtube in chrome/firefox/VLC was basically pegging both cpu cores during playback. Apple doesn't support hardware VP9 decode even though the cpu does...thanks apple! Installed intel power gadget to see what was going on. Long story short: running prime95 with a single thread (verified single core usage) in either benchmark mode or blend test: Machine bounces off 99c and throttles instantly, never hits more than 3.0Ghz single core, well short of intel advertised 3.6: https://ark.intel.com/products/189912/Intel-Core-i5-8210Y-Processor-4M-Cache-up-to-3-60-GHz- Installed Macs Fan Control, manually set fan to full speed (wow it actually blows a decent amount of air!). Ran prime95 again, same settings, same result: INSTANT thermal throttle, bouncing off 99c, 3.0Ghz. Anyways, this was just a super quick and dirty test. I understand the MBA isn't a powerhouse machine. I just want to hear from other owners if this is "normal" or if my heatsink needs to be reseated and new thermal paste applied? If so i'll probably put liquid metal on it...yolo [link] [comments]

How does the integrated graphics chip of the Late 2018 Air compare to the Mid 2015 Pro? Posted: 17 Nov 2018 05:59 PM PST Hi all, I have a maxed out 15" Mid-2015 MacBook Pro except for having an integrated graphics chip. The reason why I preferred the integrated graphics chip was due to battery life (I don't do any graphics editing or so). The issue I currently have with this is that it's a pretty weak chip that just barely copes with the retina display. Hence, if I use it for talks, newer high-res projectors have issues and drop the signal for a few sec every 5-10 minutes or so. I tried displayport/thunderbold and VGA connectors, and I believe it's because the MB Pro integrated chip is just too weak to power both the retina display plus a projector -- i.e., I noticed the problem going away when I do 720i and mirroring instead (but this is not a good solution, because I would like to avoid screen mirroring so that I can see the next slide during a talk on my macbook screen) I am thinking about getting the new MacBook Air, and I am wondering if the integrated chip is more "powerful" than the Mid-2015 15" Pro integrated graphics chip? I know, I could go with one of the newer Pro models, but I really don't want that touchbar. [link] [comments]
Trouble getting Macbook Pro to connect to TV (details below). Posted: 17 Nov 2018 04:06 PM PST I've got a mid-2014 Macbook Pro running Mojave. Works and runs fine. Picked up an older (2008) Vizio TV. Works well. When I connect (via HDMI) between them, the Mac flickers to black for a second, gives me the option tab (in Displays Sys Pref) for Arrangement, then goes black again almost immediately, and comes back with the Arrangement tab gone. This whole process then loops. Any ideas on how to keep them talking long enough to finish the setup? [link] [comments]
Posted: 17 Nov 2018 04:04 PM PST Hi guys, today I used for 10 hours my macbook for a conference where I put an image on the projector, after work (i'm an audio engineer), I put my macbook on my backpack (after unplug the charger of course). I got a little electro shock. Wtf happened? Its a 2011 macbook, have it for 3 years and never had a problem like this. Any suggestion to resolve this? I'm a producer also and I totally live with my macbook. Its very important, thank u all [link] [comments]
Mid 2013 11 inch Macbook DIY upgrade Posted: 17 Nov 2018 06:08 AM PST Hey, am looking for a way to make my machine snappier as a uni student's daily driver, mostly loading web pages, documents and microsoft office However, since it is not easy to upgrade the ram of this thing, would dumping all my files in an external harddrive be enough, or would using an external ssd as a bootdrive work better? Am considering one of those Samsung t5 harddrives as they seem to be a pretty popular choice Thanks! [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro 2013 13” black screen Posted: 17 Nov 2018 05:14 AM PST So I have the following problem: 3 days ago my MacBook would remain black once i boot it. I tried all the usual tricks SMC and NVRAM nothing worked. I hooked it up to an external screen but that did not do the trick either. After an hour or so, I tried it again and everything worked just fine. I updated my OS did a fresh back up and used my laptop as usual. Today i have the same problem. Went to the apple store and they told me the display needed to be replaced. However i cannot make it work on an external screen, so that does not make sense to me. Does anybody have a clue what could do the trick? Any help would be much appreciated! [link] [comments]

Also in the macbook air if we bought one with 8 gb ram , we can upgrade later on right? Also, Im probably gonna want to use this laptop for developement, mostly to learn ios developement and to do android developement on it.. [link] [comments] |
