Apple in talks w/ Department of Veterans Affairs to offer veterans medical records access on iPhone

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 03:35 PM PST

In 2012 Apple spent $356M to buy AuthenTec Inc. (fingerprint sensor company). They introduced TouchID in September 2013 and have effectively removed it from their newest iOS devices in September 2017 (iPhone) and Oct 2018 (iPad)

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 11:59 AM PST

Apple spent $356M to buy Authentic Inc on July 12, 2012 (wikipedia link) and then spent $XXM on further R&D and have effectively killed that technology on their 2 most popular product lines within 5 years.

Imagine spending ~$400M+ on primarily a 5 year technology rental for a button. (I understand it's in the Mac and the work on the Secure Enclave lives on etc. and it's not really dead) The scale of modern technology and Apple is still just staggering. By all accounts the acquisition was a success.

Using a XS and playing with my cousins new iPad Pro I'm fully bought into FaceID, but touchID was/is awesome! Some of the designs around it are some of Apples best: The stainless steel ring, which looks classy, but is instrumental to the functionality of the system for example. The stainless steel ring is what actually detects your finger and activates the fingerprint reader, not the pushing down of the button. They use the same system on the iPhone 7 and 8, with the simulated buttons. If you push down on the glass in the center of the button without touching the stainless steel ring, you won't activate the 'button'/won't get any haptic feedback.

A small token of appreciation for Apple Support

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:48 PM PST

So recently I opened my 2017 13" Macbook Pro to find lines running across the screen due to an LCD crack. Now this was probably my fault--with my backpack being a dangerous place--but nonetheless I died inside when I took it to the Apple store and was quoted $475.

The genius bar tech must've seen me wince, as he quickly offered to send it in to their repair center to see if it could be fixed under warranty (I don't have AppleCare but I bought in July, so a year of internal repair was still on the machine). It was sent out about a week ago but I was told I would get a phone call letting me know if they could repair it for free or if they had to charge me the $475.

Well, today, I receive a package and, lo and behold, it contains my fixed laptop. I was shocked that they did that for me considering it was probably my damn fault for having it in my bag with a bunch of heavy stuff.

Just wanted to share my one positive retail experience so far this holiday season. Definitely pleasant when my wallet is able to live yet another day.

Anyone else blown away by the battery life on their iPhone XS/XS Max?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 03:01 PM PST

Coming from an iPhone 6 with the humpback battery case, the battery life I get now is incredible.

It's 6pm and my battery just hit 50%. I never need to look for a charger anymore

Edit: okayy...no ones impressed I guess. Guess I've never needed 2+ days of charge— a plane ride maybe? Idk🧐

Finally caught my XS acting up

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:17 PM PST

Finally caught my iPhone XS acting up with something involving my connection. I'll be in an app and it will work perfectly fine for a randomly amount of time then all of a suddden acts like I don't have an internet connection at all. This happens in all my apps including YouTube, Snapchat, Apple Music, etc...

    Honest observation about iPad bending

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:40 AM PST

So I'm sure we've all seen/heard about how "easily" the new iPad pros bend under minimal stress, followed by rebuttals about how it shouldn't be put in situations where it could bend. I just want to share my observation.

I was viewing the new 12.9in iPad Pro at the store the other day and decided to give it a test. Obviously I wasn't going to actually try to bend the thing in the store, but wanted to see how much pressure it can take without bending, and honestly, you REALLY need to be trying to bend it for it to bend. The video online makes it look like it's a tough piece of cardboard that gives out at minimal effort and it is quite misleading.

I understand how it could possibly bend in a backpack filled with stuff with regular "leaning back" pressure on it, but man, anybody who makes even a minimal attempt to take care of their devices would be able to avoid any situation where their device might bend - WITHOUT EVEN TRYING.

The commentary online makes it seem like the iPad bending is a looming, inherent threat in the device, but it really requires more effort to bend it than it would to avoid bending it (it actually requires no effort to avoid bending if you treat the device reasonably )

Just wanted to share my observation in case anyone else like me was somewhat worried that this bending issue might somehow present itself through normal circumstances.

First Benchmarks for MacBook Pro With New Radeon Pro Vega Graphics Surface

Apple just shared a video about a professional editor using Adobe Premiere on a 2012 iMac

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:30 AM PST

Thought it's very strange to show adobe software on an older product. Could this be the beginning of Final Cut Pro taking the same steps as Aperture?

Secure Boot in the Era of the T2

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 03:23 PM PST

Does anybody else find that the new Mac Mini struggles with a 4K display?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 09:30 PM PST

I have the i7 Mac Mini connected to an external 4K display and am finding that the screen lag is really obvious in certain applications, like Office. I'm not sure I should be blaming Office for poor optimisation, or the integrated Intel graphics. Anybody else noticed this?

Dark Mode in Maps when connected to CarPlay at night.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 01:03 AM PST

They are obviously capable of making a perfectly good dark mode. Why don't they? They've done it in Mojave. I'd be very surprised if it wasn't included in iOS 13. Dark Mode

reviving another, 2007 black macbook with linux (plus bonus libreboot)

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 01:58 PM PST

any board regulars or mods who may be concerned that i'm going to make a post every time i fart around with linux and old mac hardware, don't worry! i don't have any more! my g4 ibook & g3 imac have been long since recycled!

    https://imgur.com/a/4wwp38h

the other day, i posted about installing linux on a 2010 macbook air. encouraged by that, and a post at the top of /r/linux about some other dorks' success with their 2006 macbook, i figure i'd have another go at my 2007 black macbook. i was especially excited by this project, because the unit holds a special place in my heart, and it would be a joy to use it day-to-day with my current programs.

    the victims' specs:

    • core 2 duo t7400 @ 2.16 ghz
    • 160 gb spinning rust hdd
    • 2 gb ram
    • intel gma 950 gfx

in os x 10.6, i downloaded a custom installer image (old intel macs use 32-bit efi, which 64-bit linuxes don't usually target) of xubuntu 18.04 from here, and burned it to a DVD. first time i've done that in nearly a decade! install after that was pretty straightforward, just boot and hold down the option key

the 2007 macbook 2,1 is also an interesting laptop, in that its' hardware is very similar to the thinkpad t60 and x60, darlings in the free software movement. this means the libreboot replacement firmware was trivial to port over, and it can be flashed by a single terminal command. so i did! the result is:

everything works, except the camera, which isn't a huge loss for my ugly mug. todo: add an ssd, increase ram to 4 gb (3.3 gb usable, chipset limitation), new battery. again, i encourage anyone with an old macbook whose support is dropped to give this a try!

iOS gesture idea: pause on a horizontal swipe to enter Split View.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 04:06 AM PST

Here's simple mock-up to visualize. Ignore the actual home bar and try to notice what's going on with the other one behind it.

It seems like this gesture would be easy to implement and consistent with current interactions. I'm also not sure if there's any reason why the Slide Over bar is still up top.

    144hz support on mac os

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 03:51 PM PST

I am looking into buying an external monitor for my MacBook Pro 13" w/ touch bar. I thought of getting a 144hz monitor but am not sure if MacOS supports it. If it does, is it possible to get 144hz with just a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 3 cable?

Also, would running my mac at 144hz slow it down?

    • Here are the specs on my MacBook:
      • 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5
      • 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
      • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB

It seems so simple, why hasn't Apple split iTunes into Apple TV and Apple Music apps for macOS?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 05:53 AM PST

Opinion: iTunes is a disorganized mess and needed to be retired years ago. If ever there were a weak spot in Apple's ecosystem, it is iTunes.

The easiest solution would be to make an Apple TV app (buying, renting, browsing available services) for macOS that functions exactly like the one on the Apple TV device. Along with that have an Apple Music app that allows single song or album purchases if you aren't doing a monthly subscription.

Are there any good reasons for not doing this yet?
