TIL - Hold the Command key on iPad Smart Keyboard for a list of shortcuts in each app

On Apple's Shop for the Holidays page they mention almost every product they make except for the $329 iPad which, imho, would be the perfect gift for a lot of people.

Discontinued AirPort Extreme and 2TB Time Capsule Finally Disappear From Apple Online Store

I finally get it - the iPad Pro is so amazing, and so incredibly irritating at the same time.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2018 08:50 AM PST

When the new IPad Pros were announced, I really was star struck by them. The hardware is top notch. It's beautiful, fast, it has great speakers, and a spectacular display. The gen 2 pencil is what the pencil always should have been. I'm even OK with the folio (though I wish a lower angle was available). I know the CPU is a beast rivaling my MacBook Pro. USB C helps consolidate the plugs I need to carry around. Everything about the package, hardware wise, really is the best I've ever seen from an iPad. It's also light and portable enough to use on the move.

I splurged on one to see if it could save me some time by improving my mobile workflow. I work in healthcare, and I go to various hospitals during the day and consult on patients. I do prep work in the morning that involves logging into the hospital information systems through Citrix. I usually have 2-3 systems open at a time on the Mac and switch between them, compiling patient information.

I hoped with the new iPad Pro, I could actually walk around with it in the hospital, and complete consults on the fly in/outside patient rooms instead of needing to find a table to sit and type at. I thought it would save me 30-60 minutes a day, which would be more time with family, which would be worth any financial cost.

But the software just completely handcuffs an otherwise amazing product for me. I was actually blown away that when I brought the iPad home and set it up, I found out I couldn't have multiple Citrix sessions open at once. The app only does one at a time and closes my current session when I open a different one. The iPad is incapable of running two instances of the same Citrix app. It basically cannot do what I need it to do. On top of that, when running just one environment in Citrix, the app crashed twice and I lost notes I was working on. The app stability is nowhere near what it is on a Mac.

Streaming videos pause and screw up when I multitask windows. Split view converts to iPhone apps. The pencil can't navigate the system UI, so I switch between pencil, keyboard, and tapping screen which is just an obnoxious trio of various input methods to manipulate just one UI.

And yet, they're so close. ProMotion is literally like butter. The gestures are a wonderful addition. Face ID works great. Apollo is a much nicer Reddit experience than Safari. The app ecosystem, for what I use, is far better than the Mac. It's just not capable of doing what I need, which is what makes it so wonderful and yet so frustrating. I am going to return the device for now and pray over time, maybe iOS 13, we'll get better multitasking systems. What is the point of an 8 core CPU if you can't run 2 instances of an app side by side?

Sorry, bit of a rant. But it's so close, and if it were better, my life would literally get better. But it's not.

Apple customer service exceeds all expectations even for the small stuff

    Posted: 16 Nov 2018 04:19 PM PST

Long story short, got my iPhone X day 1 last year and picked up a saddle brown leather case. Have been using the case since release and just recently the power button started sticking and not effectively cycling power when pushed.

Called Apple support and they informed me that the case had a 1 year warranty and I was outside of that by about 60 days. She said not to worry and that she would take care of me.

She sent a replacement case next day air and it arrived less than 24 hours from when I called.

She said typically they require me to ship back the old case but said don't even worry about that in this scenario.

    Apple FTW. Long live apple.

I haven't heard this discussed, but the fact that toggling FileVault is instant on new MBPs is amazing.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2018 07:13 PM PST

I assume this is the T2 chip doing its thing, but anyone that does IT for macOS knows how long FileVault takes to encrypt/decrypt prior to the 2018 MacBook Pros. It always took at least an hour or two, but starting with High Sierra I would routinely see it take 3-6 hours, on brand new maxed out MBPs. On the 2018s it's literally instant.

2018 MacBook Air owners, how do you like it?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2018 12:39 PM PST

I'm learning web development and want to get away from tablets. I was looking at getting an Air instead of new iPad Pro. I love the battery life and design, I'd hold off for a sale, but am very worried about the keyboard. Are the new keyboards reliable? How do you like it?

Even if I'm not touching the screen, while I'm watching any video on YouTube the HUD keeps showing up every few seconds.

EDIT: turning off Screen Time and then reinstalling YouTube solved the issue.

The /r/iPad subreddit has been re-designed and upgraded to allow for better content and discussion.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2018 09:00 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

For the past years the /r/iPad subreddit wasn't the most welcoming place and was saturated with the same questions, with no discussion thread and barely any moderation. This has now changed and we'd be happy to welcome more members to make a use of it.

So if you just got a new iPad or have any questions related to them you're welcome to join and ask!

We're also happy to hear any suggestions to improve the subreddit even further.
