Dark Reader app extension for Safari is out

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 09:22 PM PDT

    Dark mode for web pages.

It looks like this is based on the same parts as the Chrome and Firefox versions that have been out for a while.

System storage takes up crazy amount of space

I can't boot into Recovery Mode

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 06:37 PM PDT

I took my Macbook Air into an Apple Store because I have an issue where my W key stops working after being held too long and spams Ws. The lady there told me to reinstall my MacOS as it seems like a software bug and not something from hardware, but now the Command + R shortcut isn't working, and the PC just boots to the login screen. What can I do? It's a 2015 Macbook Air running Mojave.

    Old School OS X

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 01:24 AM PDT

Decided to check some of my old posts in the archive of macrumors. Back before the iPhone all we had to look forward to was OS X changes each year and we would complain about apple not being UI consistent. Ah the easier times...

And you think its crazy the prices they have now for stuff, back then this was the worst thing to happen lol.

How does one let dark mode automatically turn on / off after sunset / sunrise ?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 12:32 AM PDT

The title says it all basically. I'd love it if my MacBook would toggle dark mode based on the time of day. And even better if I could make Chrome take on a dark theme automatically as well and turn on Dark Reader for chrome as well.

Accidental iCloud lock = impossible to unlock

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 09:10 AM PDT

Through a mis-communication and a Mac Mini re-connecting to a previously disconnected AppleID, it's now iCloud locked.

The PIN prompt did not take keyboard input last time I tried, the PIN was attempted, but did not register.

If I reboot, it automatically disables the Mac for another 60 minutes.

If I wait the proper time, it'll say Wrong Passcode, Try again, but there's no box for re-entering the PIN. (see photo)

If I reboot, it disables for another hour.

If I try internet recovery mode and enter the PIN for the EFI, it accepts it and boots into Mac Disabled for 60 minutes.

It will take less than 5 seconds to unlock it, but it will not behave, what is the secret for this madness?

    MacOS High Sierra reinstallation issues.

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 06:02 PM PDT

Hi, I have a 2017 Macbook Pro 13' and I've been running into several issues after trying to perform a clean wipe of the system.

    1. After a wipe of the system, I am unable to reinstall macOS High Sierra. The installation will either time out, or disconnect before completion, and will be stuck at 2 minutes remaining.
    2. When checking the installation log during the installation of macOS, immediately there are many lines of errors. (I can post them separately if that helps).
    3. When attempting to erase the HD and perform first aid on the drive, I always get the error "Unable to unmount volume for repair".

Any ideas of how I go about this issue?

    Thanks.

Removing Apple News App from Mojave

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 02:57 PM PDT

Dragging from Apps to the Trash does not work because it "can't be modified or deleted because it's required by macOs.".

I have already disabled all notifications and disabled the (very un-Apple like) background Safari and other apps spying, but is it possible to disable it running from the background, or even completely remove it? It is very distracting and uses memory, CPU, disk space and bandwidth while I don't have any use for it.

    Finder and trackpad gestures

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 01:45 PM PDT

How come that Finder still doesn't support trackpad gestures like in Safari.

I want to swipe back and forth. (and yes I know there are options in system preferences, but it's different and not so fluent)

    +

Pinch to see all the tabs.

Apple is well known for the small details and consistency , but after so many years... I can't figure out why not add these features into Safari.

    Linux, BSD, Windows, Mac

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 07:43 PM PDT

So recently I did a big post in a lot of subreddits on Linux, BSD, and Windows.

What I learned was that Linux because it is open source is a lot more flexible, you can do whatever you want with it, and there is a lot of emerging creativity there.

BSD because it is all made with the same mentality instead of stitched together from various projects like Linux is a lot smoother but because it doesn't have all the various interests working on it it doesn't have as much config for hardware coming out or as many options as linux distros like ubuntu. but is great for server work because of the speed and clean programming through and through.

windows is great for the average user for the simple reason of it being made to be as easy and user friendly as possible despite all the other things negative lol and mac?

Tell me about mac, what is mac great for :)

Mac OS Mojave Facetime Freezes/Camera not working

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 07:42 PM PDT

Own the newest 2018 15 inch Macbook Pro and wonder why with a powerful processor still struggles to initialize FaceTime correctly? When I Facetime somebody my whole computer freezes for a good 30 seconds and then goes into the call, but the Camera isn't on (no green light).

    Any fixes available?

    Thanks

    Mojave

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 04:22 AM PDT

Has anyone else noticed there Mac is significantly slower after Mojave was installed? I have a 15 inch 2016 pro so it is most definitely not my systems specs. Things stutter, like my mouse, windows get frozen (like email, safari and things that don't take much resources....)

Energy savings settings are stuck with different timezone

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 05:24 PM PDT

I live in the EST timezone and recently I travelled to Amsterdam which is in GMT+1 (and in daylight savings time). Effectively a 6 hour time difference.

I have setup my Macbook a long time ago to automatically shut down at 2am and turn on at 7am. Ever since I got back from Amsterdam, the Energy savings mode kicks in at the GMT+1 time effectively trying to shut down my Macbook every day at 8pm!

Has anyone else noticed this issue? And more importantly; is there a solution?

I tried 'turning it on and off again' and switching timezones manually. I recently updated to Mojave but I'm not entirely sure if that's related (vaguely remember this issue happening before as well).

How to download macOS Mojave from App Store when you are already on Mojave?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 01:10 PM PDT

When I click "Get" from App Store, it opens the new software update settings. I want to download it; so, I can fresh install my Mac.

Looking for OSX App that will keep track of medical information

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 12:45 PM PDT

There's Health.app in iOS which is still very limited. Is there anything out there for OSX that will allow (even manually) entering health information - lab results/biometrics/etc. ?

Dark mode is cool, but does anyone have a 'hack' to change the color of grey it uses?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 04:05 PM PDT

It's obviously set in a config file somewhere. Any idea where?

Edit: What I mean is that dark mode uses #323232, what if I wanted to use another dark color?

Anyone who have faced problems with Mojave downloaded this version yet? How is it going so far and did it solve any of the problems you faced or it just created more of them?

Issue with iTunes (Mojave) crashing when using a NAS

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 10:09 AM PDT

Running a NAS with SMB. Have all my music on the NAS and it plays ok through itunes, but if I try to sync any of the music to my phone it just grinds to a halt and crashes, requiring a full system reboot.

    Anyone else having this issue?

Is Stacks really buggy for anyone else?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 01:52 PM PDT

I just installed Mojave a few days ago and I have to say that the Stacks feature has been really buggy for me so far. Often times I'll download or move items to my desktop and the stacks won't update or show the items that are in there.

For example, just now I moved 4 text files to my desktop. The documents stack says "4 items" (I have "show Item info" turned on). But when I click on it, only 2 items show.

Stuff like that has been happening pretty much every day since I installed Mojave. Probably going to turn Stacks off for now.

Can't copy or delete anything on desktop when logged in as root

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 01:08 PM PDT

If you login to desktop as root you can't copy, move, duplicate or delete any files. Everything was fine in High Sierra. Only way to delete is through terminal (rm -r ..)

Even on a fresh install no dice.

Anyone else experiencing this behavior? Or have a solution?
