LPT: Make your screen recordings better

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 02:15 PM PDT

Many of you might know this already (you may ignore this post) but I see this a lot so I figured I'd post this anyway.

If you are recording your screen you can end the recording through the sleep/wake button rather than swiping for the control center and clicking the button.

Doing it this way, your recording just ends cleanly

iPhone “Hide” photos is just not enough...

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 02:42 AM PDT

So there are photos that you do not want to show to everyone, and when you show an album to someone it is very easy for them to navigate to the hidden album.

When will there be an ability to lock an album like locking notes? Placing photos in the hidden album does not help make them private. It is a simple but powerful feature that should be added.

I do not want to use third party apps or import photos into locked notes.

After seeing the Google event this year, one thing is for certain...

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 09:43 AM PDT

Apple Keynotes are still the gold standard when it comes to presentations. Honestly, I'm surprised that no one has been able to match the quality of an Apple Keynote even though they have been in the same general format for many years. Apple does a great job at communicating why you would want to buy and have "this" product in your life while teaching you about the specifications as well. Each of the presenters also seem to have a deep understanding about the products/services they are talking about. I don't see this replicated very well in other big tech presentations.

[Opinion] Apple should bring back the free app of the week in the app store

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 06:23 PM PDT

Apple has spent the past five years fighting what's known internally as a billion-dollar iPhone fraud problem in China.

Apple Watch Series 4 is awesome!

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 05:08 PM PDT

My yearly bonus at work hits this week so I figured I'd treat myself to a new Apple Watch. Went to Target yesterday and grabbed (one of the last two Apple Watches in the whole store, I lucked out) a Space Gray 44mm with the sport band. Coming from a Series 0 it's seriously impressive to see how much better the Watch has gotten. My S0 use had been pretty much been dwindled down to well, looking at the time of course, to quickly glance at my notifications, and to use it for working out/music, but it was a miserable experience waiting for the Watch to catch up with what I wanted it to do. On top of that, I kept getting this weird bug where it would alert me that I had a text, but it would only show me one specific old text from the contact that sent the message.

It functions the way it should and I've pretty much been relearning the ins and outs of the watch despite wearing one for the past 2.5 years. For example, I Shazamed a song just now in my local coffeeshop. Didn't have to watch the app spin for eons only for it to time out and not do what I wanted it to do. I was able to use Scribble in messages and the blue line was actually following my finger and if I made a mistake I could quickly correct it before I was already 3 words down the line. Siri actually works instead of thinking for a long time before timing out and telling me "Siri not available."

Also a big fan of the new iPhone X-esque rounded screen. Just looks super futuristic and nice. To all of my Series 0 homies up there, if you can afford it now is the time to jump ship! Having an Apple Watch that works the way it was intended to is phenomenal!

P.S. now that I have the ability to use apps again, what are some good ones? Specifically looking for an awesome calculator app. I've been using this one called MiniCalc for the past few years and it's super simple and awesome, but the dev hasn't updated it to accommodate the bigger screen size on the S4 so I'd rather have one more up to date.

Apple Maps 3D rendering improvements making its way outside North America

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 12:02 PM PDT

I was poking around Apple Maps in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Paris, and I noticed that in Hong Kong, where 3D renderings did not previously exist, 3D renderings have been added in, and several buildings also received the special extra-detailed treatment. However, Flyover still does not exist in Hong Kong. Some buildings in Tokyo and Paris received the special extra-detailed treatment as well, though Flyover and 3D renderings already existed in those cities. Apple isn't solely focused on improving the US/North America before rolling out improvements to the rest of the world; instead, I think they are focusing on improving where their existing mapping data is lacking.

In addition, the improved maps data can also be accessed on devices running iOS 10, so the latest software is not required to access the improved maps data.

    Apple October Event Invites

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 12:28 AM PDT

Have a distinct feeling if we are indeed getting an October event, the invites should be sent out to the press today. Given that the iPhone XR launches next Friday the 19th, it would usually make sense to host an event that Wednesday, announce new products and also launch them on the 19th, as well as announcing again that iPhone XR also goes on sale.

If they don't come out today, we may have to expect a very late keynote this year, if there is another one.

    Apple Music sounds better?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 01:13 PM PDT

Hello all. I have been a long time Spotify user and part time Apple Music listener. I put my fiancée on my Apple music account. She was listening to AM in her car and she remarked how much better it sounded than Spotify. She showed me using the same songs on both services and I have to say AM sounded so much better. I listened on my home stereo and the results held. Am I dreaming this or does AM truly sound better than Spotify? I was using Bluetooth in the car and on my home stereo.

What is everyone’s favorite use of 3D Touch?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 07:20 PM PDT

With the release of the Xr looming, I can't help but be a little bummed 3D Touch isn't available on this device. I have really come to appreciate it over the years. My most used is definitely peeking into mail messages without fully "popping" the message open and then swiping left to delete the message. It makes sifting through a full inbox so easy, especially on these massive screens. I really hope apple doesn't abandon the feature completely.

What's your favorite uses of 3D Touch?

Use your Apple TV to find your phone

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 06:38 PM PDT

I had no clue this was possible, as a joke I said to my girlfriend (I misplaced my phone in my room) I wish Siri worked like this. into the Apple TV remote "hey Siri find my phone" then it asked if I would like to make it make a sound. I responded yes and my phone dinged like a find my iPhone... I'll be damned any other similar things you can do on TVOS? https://imgur.com/a/vCYVzdY

My Siri Shortcuts: Start My Day & Quickstart My Day

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 01:57 PM PDT

    'Sup gang,

I've been tinkering with Siri Shortcuts for a while, with the idea of squeezing a bit more usefulness out of my phone.

So I've made a shortcut to start my day well by:

    • starting a song of my Favorites list from iTunes
    • wishing me a good morning
    • showing me appointments for that day
    • giving the ability to take a quick glance at some or all of those activities
    • showing you the birthdays of that day
    • giving the ability to select the people you wish to send a Happy Bday text
    • have a preformatted bday text ready with the ability to add to it
    • laying some cheesy motivational quote on me

The idea here is to start off the day well and get those Bday messages out of the way (let's face it, it's always nice to not be forgotten)

A couple of people have asked me to share it, so here it is. You can find it at:

Siri Shortcut - Start My Day!

A couple of things you need to do to make it work:

    • Choose your preferred playlist
    • Make sure to have contacts with their birthday filled in
    • In both Calendar boxes, choose which accounts you want to get activities from

Alternatively, I've also made a silent version that skips the Siri-speeches and goes straight to the good stuff. Available here:

Siri Shortcut - Quickstart My Day!

Of course, you can customize it any way you want to. My own version gives me the choice to set the brightness to 50% at the end, or delay it by 5 minutes so I can browse reddit with my nightvision eyes a while longer.

If you have any questions or ideas, I'd be happy to hear them and maybe even more skilled shortcuteers can chip in and make some cool additions.

    iPhone XR Peek and Pop

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 09:37 AM PDT

I'm saddened to see 3D touch not being in the XR, and my research indicates that Haptic Touch is simply a vibration on a long touch.

Is it possible/likely that either Apple or Third Party developers can add a peek/pop action on the iPhone XR? I'm thinking a long touch that ends up showing the peek action.

AirPods and iOS 12 battery draining

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 12:03 AM PDT

Since iOS 12 I feel that the battery life of my AirPods has degraded and I'm now having to charge them much more frequently than I had to before. Yes I have had them for almost 2 years however I feel like they've been dying quicker than before. Music life is about 2 hours or so. Talk time is maybe 45 minutes.

    Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

    About those premium headphones

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 07:45 PM PDT

Remember that rumor? Non-Beats premium headphones with a premium price? Do you think we'll ever get it? Even Microsoft released headphones last week although ewww. Anyhow I know if I buy Bose that they'll come out the next day. And I just can't bring myself to buy Beats again.

An iPhone addressed to my apartment just showed up. What do I do?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 12:17 PM PDT

    Hello,

A package showed up addressed to my apartment showed up so I opened it and it contained an iPhone. It looks like it's for the previous tennant who lived here over a year ago. What do I do with it? I'm posting here since this hasn't happened to me before.

Edit: Found the Fed Ex guy on the street and gave it back to him.

A more effective interface for Contacts would be appreciated.

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 07:52 AM PDT

    in iOS

The primary issue I have is deleting contacts that are duplicated or incomplete. (I happen to have many duplicates after pulling in contacts from email addresses that I've used for decades.). To delete, I must tap into each Contact and opt to delete it - torturously time consuming.

An Edit mode with radio buttons and a Delete option would be far more effective.

    Thoughts?
