I was curious about how the screen sizes differ in every aspect, so I made this simple infographic about it.

Just found out you can compare a filter side by side the original by 3D touching on it

Picked up an XR today after being on Android for 3-4 years. Here are my thoughts!

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:34 AM PDT

Picked up the XR in my local store today, (even had the manager ask for a picture with me and the phone being the first customer to buy an XR)

I feel like the biggest point here would be the screen so I'll talk about that first. The screen is fine, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. I came from a 1080p OLED and I don't notice anything bad about this screen. It's extremely bright, I'm sitting indoors with it at around roughly 35% now and it's fine, also looks fine out in sunlight.

Face ID is great, and I was skeptical at first, having being used to the speed of a fingerprint reader. But Face ID is near enough just as fast.

The phone is extremely snappy, fast and responsive. Every app I'm opening stays in memory for ages. (Not sure if this is just a general iOS 12 thing but it's great.) The speakers are great, the camera is great. Only thing I can't comment on currently is the battery life as I've only had the phone a few hours.

If anyone has any XR specific related questions or anything they want me to try out on the XR feel free to ask! I'm 100% happy with my purchase.

Where do you get your iPhone wallpapers from?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:38 AM PDT

I have used this site for quite some time now, but the addition of new wallpapers is getting slower on this site and the quality too.

iOS treats the XR like a Plus/Max sized device.

That means you get those nice two column landscape modes in Messages, Mail etc.

I made an Apple wallpaper generator!

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 04:03 AM PDT

I made a Siri shortcut that uses the library of Apple logos made for the iPad/Mac event to generate a random Apple logo wallpaper! examples (hit customise to use the shortcut with other shape phones)

    the shortcut

Edit: and an oled black version.

All the code to actually get the image from imgur was the work of u/hinapupina in his "imgur downloader" shortcut. I modified it a bit, but i don't understand it well enough to have done this on my own. Thanks!

I also realized that all the non-imgur code i wrote could cluld work with any fairly square-ish image with a solid color backroud, making wallpapers like these. if you want that version, here you go:

    that shortcut

These links won't work if you open them in Reddit's web browser by the way, so you'll need to open them in safari.

How to choose a Screen Protector---PET,TPU or Tempered Glass?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:06 AM PDT

How to choose a Screen Protector---PET,TPU or Tempered Glass?

Choosing a proper screen protector must be the top priority for some people when getting their brand new phone. Are you sure you get enough knowledge for screen protector? There are three varieties - PET , TPU, and our undisputed favorite - tempered glass. To get the maximum protection for your investment, here are more things you really need to know.

    PET film

PET film, abbreviated from polyethylene terephthalate,a type of plastic that's available in many variations depending on specific applications. They consist of polyester film with a scratch resistant matte coating on one side and a silicone adhesive on the other.

    https://i.redd.it/64qhomc7lhu11.jpg

These kind of screen protectors have been around for a long time now, and you've probably seen these or applied them on your phone. Quality ones are quite clear and has high transparency. Their scratch-resistance isn't better than what Gorilla Glass already has - it's limited to fingernails, coins and keys. Their downside is that plastic is the easiest to discolor from sun rays and oil buildup from your fingers, and it doesn't feel as nice as glass does to the touch.

    TPU film

TPU,meaning thermoplastic polyreuthane,is next in the screen protector food chain, any of a class of polyurethane plastics with many properties, including elasticity), transparency, and resistance to oil, grease and abrasion. Technically, they are thermoplastic elastomers consisting of linear segmented block copolymers composed of hard and soft segments.

    https://i.redd.it/cu661l9glhu11.jpg

Since the material is elastic, it has limited "self-healing" abilities. This means that its slight softness gives it the power to absorb non-extreme impact, such as most drops and lighter scratches, while retaining all or most of its original composition. For example, lighter scratches usually leave just a small dent in the soft plastic, which slowly returns to normal.

    Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is probably some people's favorite choice. It is an option that is comparable to the thin plastic choices. It is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass.Tempered glass has a thickness and gives a feel much like the original screen. It has better light transmittance, making for a clearer display. It's anti-reflective and glare reducing. It has oleophobic coating, which heavily reduces fingerprints and the smooth feel of actual glass under your fingertips.

    https://i.redd.it/8pofmp4nlhu11.jpg

Tempered glass protectors boast a material hardness rating of 8H to 9H, meaning they are hard enough to resist scratches from anything that's not topaz or corundum (extremely hard aluminum oxide). Yet, they aren't completely shatter-proof. Since this is toughened glass we're talking about, in the event of a fatal drop, the protector will absorb all the damage and break into tiny shards. Chances are pretty good that your display will end up unscathed underneath. Thus, instead of having to replace the entire screen, you'll only have to get a new protector. Which is easier on both your soul and your wallet.

    Price

PET films are quite cheap, and usually come in packs of three or more. If you have a cheaper or older phone, or you're fine with the most basic and affordable screen protection, get a PET protector.

If you are willing to pay a slightly higher price, a TPU protector is, logically, better choice than PET film. At the very least, it's going to provide better impact protection (although you shouldn't be pushing your chances). It's also nicer to the touch, although it isn't glass-smooth.

As you probably expected, tempered glass protectors are the most expensive kind. Most renowned brands can charge up to $40 for their products. And although that's money well spent if you are rocking an expensive flagship smartphone, excellent tempered glass protectors can be found for less than $15 online.

    https://i.redd.it/6wa4mj1xnhu11.jpg

    Wrap-up

So what do you think? Have you decided the best screen protector to choose for your device yet?PET film products are the best choice for basic screen protection. TPU protectors can be a bit rare, but they have the best ratio of affordability and toughness. Finally, Tempered Glass protectors offer the ultimate in protection and feel, but they are the priciest of the bunch. Still, even the most expensive ones make sense for flagship smartphones and tablets.

What’s your favorite case for your iPhone X?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:27 AM PDT

I'm looking for something reliable and preferably with a little (durable) flap over the charging port. I've tried lifeproof cases before but they are problematic for talking on the phone. Any suggestions? Links to products are welcome! Thanks.

Upgraded from SE to X - Why are (i)Phones that big

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 04:29 AM PDT

I upgraded because its the smallest fullscreen iPhone. I Love this thing but why phones are getting that big!?

I know, that most people want big phones and thats why manufactures make them that huge. But there are also a lot of People who want smoething smaller and cant get it.

Why not 5" iPhone X design!? Would perfectly fit in smaller hands and would be great for one hand usage!

I hope for an new SE, but i think there will ne no more small phones.

I really do like having a good camera and beautiful display.

Quick thoughts on the iPhone Xr. Didn’t have much time with it, but I was able to hold and use a demo unit today.

    Posted: 25 Oct 2018 06:33 PM PDT

    1. OLED vs LCD doesn't seem to be a huge deal. Like I said, I only got to hold it for a couple minutes but it was a really nice display. This is coming from a launch day iPhone X and XS Max owner. I would not consider it a huge downgrade.
    2. Bezels aren't big. For some reason, the side and bottom bezels look really big compared to the X(S) in promo images. I barely noticed it in person. Maybe I was distracted by the color, but who knows. It looks fine!
    3. Color is so nice. I got to see the blue and red. Red seems to be the same exact look as the 8/Plus product red. Blue is beautiful. It's definitely a lot lighter than I thought it would be and my coworkers personally weren't too impressed. The aluminum sides are definitely dull compared to the shiny darker back. I think best case scenario is getting a bumper case like a rhino shield or something.
    4. Weight seems to be about the same as a X/S.
    5. Box is really cool with matching wallpaper and matching colored apple logo for the corresponding color.

Other than that, it looks really cool!! I'm super excited for everyone able to pick one up tomorrow. I think it will be a hit.

Battery Health: 37% vs 85% (coconutbattery vs iOS Settings)

Battery Health: 37% vs 85% (coconutbattery vs iOS Settings)

    Hello,

I was given an iPhone 6 to which I need to migrate (from an iPhone 6 that I need to give back). The battery of the "new" iPhone seemed to be draining really fast but Battery Health said 85% (with peak power issues, although it works actually fast), so I checked with coconutbattery (mac) and iBackupBot (Windows), to find this mismatch:

94% in Battery Health and 673mAh (37.2% capacity) in coconut / 700mAh (40%) in iBackup. Makes sense given what it lasts. Has anyone had this mismatch?

    \"new\" iPhone

For reference, this is my current iPhone status. 94% in Battery Health and 1624mAh (90%) in coconut / 1700mAh (97%) in iBackup. This one doesn't really last a lot (it actually doesn't look like it's so healthy in real usage), but definitely decent.

    Current iPhone

I'm getting a 29€ battery replacement in a few days unless a magic battery calibration (which I still haven't done) fixes this.

Storage upgrades for 2018 models by US prices is $0.78 / GB (for the 8 and newer)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 10:44 AM PDT

Not super profound but I didn't see this anywhere yet and in case it's interesting to anyone...

I did some model and storage size price comparisons for the current models to see if any increases were better than others.

For the 8, 8 Plus, XR, XS, and XS Max, all storage increases cost $0.78125 per GB added, or $50 per 64 GB

(7 and 7 Plus are $1.042 per GB added)

It seems like previous year model prices had a break per GB on larger storage versions but maybe the increments just made some jumps look better.

Model/Size 32GB 64GB 128GB Increase from prev. size 256GB Increase from prev. size 512GB Increase from prev. size
    iPhone 7 $449 $549 $100 for 96GB: $1.04/GB
    iPhone 7 Plus $569 $669 $100 for 96GB: $1.04/GB
    iPhone 8 $599 $749 $150 for 192GB: $0.78/GB
    iPhone 8 Plus $699 $849 $150 for 192GB: $0.78/GB
    iPhone XR $749 $799 $50 for 64GB: $0.78/GB $899 $150 for 192GB: $0.78/GB
    iPhone XS $999 $1,149 $150 for 192GB: $0.78/GB $1,349 $200 for 256GB : $0.78/GB
    iPhone XS Max $1,099 $1,249 $150 for 192GB: $0.78/GB $1,449 $200 for 256GB : $0.78/GB
