Using a lightning cable splitter with iPad for Duet Display Posted: 06 Oct 2018 02:35 PM PDT I recently came across Duet Display, which allows you to use your iPad as a second monitor with your Mac or PC. It is a wired only application, and works with the lightning cable. Since iPads cannot be charged by connecting to a laptop via USB, this might be problematic if my iPad battery is running low and I still want to use it with Duet Display. Is there any device or lightning cable splitter that allows me to connect it to a wall charger, while simultaneously connecting it via USB to my laptop? The only splitters that I've come across are for simultaneously charging and using lightning headphones, but I don't know if those will do the trick here... [link] [comments] |
iPhoneX/iOS won't reveal nearby wifi networks Posted: 06 Oct 2018 10:23 AM PDT I've had this problem for almost a year (since the iPhoneX came out). It happens intermittently and if I'm lucky it can reveal networks and connect, but most of the time I simply can't connect to nearby wifi-networks and have to rely on cellular data. See the example below of what it looks like. The wifi simply stays "off" and trying to toggle it either doesn't work at all, or it very quickly flashes a network list then disappears. I even try to "drag" the toggle into the on-position, but it doesn't work. See for yourself here: https://streamable.com/rl6eh Any help is greatly appreciated! Have not been as frustrated with an iphone since the X came out. Oh, and: Yes – I've looked for this issue in Apple forms and all over the place but haven't found these exact symptoms anywhere. People mostly report issues of the wifi-btn being "greyed out" which isn't this. Yes – I've visited the Apple Store, initially for an unrelated issue (regular freezing up of the phone/ios, which is now gone) – as they looked at the phone they said my wifi-chip(?) was damaged so they gave me a replacement, but the same thing keeps happening. Yes – I've "Restored All Network Settings" many times. It can help for a short while, then it starts up again. Yes – I've rebooted, installed the latest iOS, turned "wifi" on and off in the shortcuts, etc etc. Yes – It happens on ALL wifi-networks, both at home and when traveling. [link] [comments] |
Macbook retina 15" 2015 stripes in the screen when shutting down, should I be worried? Posted: 06 Oct 2018 04:33 PM PDT Hey, This might have happen for a long time, but I just noticed it. My macbook is showing these kind of stripes when shutting down the system from desktop. I havent noticed the same when shutting down just from the log in screen. Here's a photo of the issue i'm experiencing. Is this something to be worried about? I'm about to travel due work and really need my macbook to work during that time.. Macbook I'm running on is MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid 2015, OS is Sierra 10.12.6 I started noticing this issue after a black screen I got when working. I was connecting UA interface to my MacBook via Firewire and I think that caused the black screen. Here's a part of the report from log: *** Panic Report *** panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff80045363d0): "a freed zone element has been modified in zone kalloc.16: expected 0xffffff802efd4871 but found 0, bits changed 0xffffff802efd4871, at offset 0 of 16 in element 0xffffff8026fd4a90, cookies 0x3f001182f7f12576 0x5352190be776bfd"@/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-3789.70.16/osfmk/kern/zalloc.c:650 Backtrace (CPU 6), Frame : Return Address 0xffffff91f2fdb710 : 0xffffff80044e953c 0xffffff91f2fdb790 : 0xffffff80045363d0 0xffffff91f2fdb800 : 0xffffff8004535549 0xffffff91f2fdb850 : 0xffffff8004533f84 0xffffff91f2fdb9a0 : 0xffffff8004a5489b 0xffffff91f2fdb9c0 : 0xffffff7f8521febc 0xffffff91f2fdba30 : 0xffffff7f85220bae 0xffffff91f2fdba60 : 0xffffff7f85235746 0xffffff91f2fdba80 : 0xffffff7f8522eb95 0xffffff91f2fdbab0 : 0xffffff7f8520feb5 0xffffff91f2fdbac0 : 0xffffff8004ae5279 0xffffff91f2fdbb20 : 0xffffff8004ae32a2 0xffffff91f2fdbb80 : 0xffffff8004aec1c3 0xffffff91f2fdbcc0 : 0xffffff80045bd2b8 0xffffff91f2fdbdd0 : 0xffffff80044ee7bc 0xffffff91f2fdbe30 : 0xffffff80044cafb1 0xffffff91f2fdbe80 : 0xffffff80044df777 0xffffff91f2fdbf10 : 0xffffff80045ea198 0xffffff91f2fdbfb0 : 0xffffff800449adb6 Kernel Extensions in backtrace: com.uaudio.driver.UAD2System(9.4)[00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000]@0xffffff7f8520e000->0xffffff7f85258fff dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.9)[3E00E7D2-E569-341D-9BE0-34D5DE491825]@0xffffff7f84eda000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily(205.15)[2D3115C6-0FFD-3244-AB4A-4F9041C5D614]@0xffffff7f84d8f000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireFamily(4.6.6)[B945C3AB-C61B-39D2-9003-4036BB3684F0]@0xffffff7f84dd6000 BSD process name corresponding to current thread: UA Mixer Engine Thank you in advance. Posted: 06 Oct 2018 08:43 PM PDT I recently got a MacBook Pro used on eBay for cheap. I've been using it for a but and I've noticed a few issues. my biggest one is that when I'm FaceTime-ing someone my camera seems to freeze up. I have a perfect wifi connection and so do they, but they get a "poor connection" message. I can see them and hear them perfectly. Can I get some help to this? The laptop also gets really hot when FaceTime-ing and the fan has to kick. in, I'm not sure if thats a problem but I might look into replacing the fan. My battery has aprox. 950 cycles, and I'm getting about 2 hours of video playback. Im not sure if thats good either but its useable. If anyone has a solution to the camera problem it would help me out a lot. additionally, if anyone can tell me if the heat problem is normal or not please let me know. Many thanks :) This is my first MacBook by the way, Ive hated on them my whole life and honestly that doesn't seem fair if I didn't try one [link] [comments] |
Something's not right with my screen after iOS 12 update. (iPhone 8) Posted: 06 Oct 2018 10:20 AM PDT I have an iPhone 8 and just now I updated to iOS 12 and I immediately noticed something's not right with the screen, mainly brightness or colors. More specifically, I think True Tone isn't working properly anymore which is a shame because it is one thing I love about my phone. I wrote to Apple Support waiting for a response. Is this normal and is there a solution? :( [link] [comments] |

Foil peeling off side vents under 2018 Macbook Pro Posted: 06 Oct 2018 06:04 AM PDT I picked up a 2018 Macbook Pro not too long ago and noticed a foil peeling off inside the side vent under the laptop. It seems to almost be more surface area than what would have been needed to cover that lip which I found weird. Anyone know what this is or what may have caused it? [link] [comments] |

iOS 12 update prompt not appearing on iPhone X Posted: 06 Oct 2018 12:09 PM PDT I could be missing something but for some reason I am not receiving any prompt to update my iPhone X to iOS 12 that I have with Sprint. I used to be part of the beta program but I removed the profile thinking it could be a possible issue. My girlfriend just updated her iPhone 7 to iOS 12 from the prompt so I'm pretty lost. Software update says i'm up to date on iOS 11.4.1. Any suggestions? Thanks [link] [comments] |
2009 MBP 15" This item is temporarily unavailable issues Posted: 06 Oct 2018 03:46 PM PDT I was given this mbp and I was hoping to get it working as a spare computer. I am unable to get the system to run the installer. I have tried multiple USB boot methods. The Apple Recovery USB stick, didn't work. Still asked for my Apple ID and would still show the same message. I have tried logging into icloud.com with safari in the help menu and try again, no go. I am now creating a Mavericks USB stick with TransMac on my Windows PC, waiting for it to finish and hope that may work. But I am not sure what else to do as I am lost. :( This was the year before Internet Recovery was available. :( Also no Apple Store within 200 miles of me. Our other MAC is a 2009 Mini, and I've been using it on and off to make USB sticks too. [link] [comments] |
Weird pixelated screen after opening new macbook pro Posted: 06 Oct 2018 03:11 PM PDT I just recently purchased a new macbook pro (a little over 2 weeks ago). I've noticed that sometimes when I open it, a very weird pixelated screen appears for about 2 seconds before it returns to normal. Everything else is working completely fine as far as I can tell and this only occurs maybe 1 of every 3 times I open it. The pixelated screen is just mildly annoying (especially considering this laptop is brand new). Is anyone else experiencing this problem/found a way to solve the issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2018 09:12 AM PDT Can one not use a VPN to check iCloud email? (Neither Gmail nor Outlook locked me out.) The VPN in question is HotSpot Shield. In the distant past I'm pretty sure I had no problems checking iCloud email using Private Internet Access. Do I have to ditch HSS if I'm going to travel and check email from locations other than home? [link] [comments] |
Problems restoring backup when upgrading to new iphone XR Posted: 06 Oct 2018 03:02 PM PDT Hello, So I was stupid and had a developer profile on my iphone 7s plus. So of course when I tried to restore with my newest update it said I needed ios 12.1 which I can't get on the new phone right away. So I tried removing the beta profile on the 7splus and then backing up , but that didn't seem to work other. So I saw I had a backup from a couple weeks ago when it was till ios12. Ok no problem it took about 30 minutes via wifi to restore. But then when it comes to the screen where all the apps are loading its taking forever. What can I do? Also, what happens if the previous phone had a larger storage than this one? Will the backup just fail or store in icloud. Any help would be great [link] [comments] |
High Sierra System space storage wrong allocation and possible false disc usage report Posted: 06 Oct 2018 02:39 PM PDT I have a 120gb ssd in my Early 2015 macbook pro, i have about 32 gb of data stored on my computer plus the 6 gb of system storage, which is displayed between 38-45gb changing randomly from time to time for no reason. I have checked everything, deleted purgeables, dont have any time machine backups, removed then added the hd from spotlight to reset it etc. nothing worked. Can anyone help me whats causing this? Its sensing that i have so much less space on my hd , but after checking every folder that i could find on my hd its really just 32gb of data+ 8gb of apps and 6gb of ACTUAL system storage. so thats about 36 gb short of whats displayed. I cant install a game i wanted to play because of this [link] [comments] |
Contacts not syncing across devices? Posted: 06 Oct 2018 02:34 PM PDT Hey y'all! I have both an iPhone 7+ (updated to the latest software as of a week ago) and a MacBook Pro (on OS High Sierra). I normally use iMessage and SMS from both my phone and my computer, which is not a problem. However, whenever I get a new contact, I would add it to my phone, and it would automatically sync to my computer (both devices are synced to iCloud, and to the same account). I've tried restarting both devices, and waiting a while (almost a month), and the problem still persists. iMessages / SMS messages do sync from one device to another, just not contacts (meaning I see messages from unrecognized numbers on my computer). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you! [link] [comments] |
iCloud Consumes 700 GB of Bandwidth in 24 Hour Period Posted: 06 Oct 2018 08:28 AM PDT Just checking to see if anyone has encountered something like this. I have a 2015 MacBook Pro, Windows 10 Desktop and an iPhone X. So here's the tale... I came home yesterday and commenced my normal internet browsing when I suddenly started getting warnings injected into my webpages that I was approaching our monthly bandwidth limit. Now we have 1 TB of bandwidth and never go over more than 450 GB so I was a bit shocked. I have ways of keeping my ISP honest and checking my own usage and sure enough when I check it I am shocked to find that at about 5 PM the previous day something kicked up and had been running constant for a 24 Hr period trying to "upload" out of my network. A little investigation to discover its the nsurlsession process on my Macbook, further investigation took me to the iCloud drive. Shut it down and boom that closed the spigot. I have no idea what suddenly spurred it to do this. I rarely use the actual iCloud drive and only had it on for some experimentation purposes. I had not place any files in it recently or made any changes. You might wonder why I mentioned the Windows Desktop... Well after I shut down the Macbook I thought i had righted the worlds problems and went off to dinner. When I came back from dinner (a couple of hours later) I decided to double check my usage on my own network and was shocked to find yet another high traffic process this time "downloading"... then it dawned on me. I have a windows desktop with iCloud installed....Apparently it was stuck in the same download loop that my Macbook was stuck in as an upload loop. Sigh, so I shut it down too and now all is well. Last thoughts...Lucky for me I am literally one day away from my monthly flip over on bandwidth...glad this didn't happen one day later... Also you might be wondering just how big my iCloud Drive is...well was... I had all of 6.8 GB of files in it. Yet it consumed "over" 700 GB of bandwidth in one night. TL:DR iCloud got hungry needed a snack and ate all my monthly bandwidth in one night. [link] [comments] |
Early 2009 iMac won’t boot properly after installing Sierra via. patch tool Posted: 06 Oct 2018 02:03 PM PDT Was previously on 10.11.6 El Capitan, followed this tutorial 100% and checked the incompatibility list and now when I boot I get this screen and then it just shuts itself down. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
[Question] iPhone getting warm with apps such as Snapchat, Tinder, and others... Posted: 06 Oct 2018 01:35 PM PDT So for the past few months at least that I have noticed apps such as Snapchat, Tinder, mostly anything really warm my phone up a bit, not really noticeable in my hand but when pressed against my face or top of my hand I notice it. Can only really notice it though if case is off? Does this happen to anyone else??? Happened on iOS 11 and 12, tried a restore, had gotten a new X and same thing. Am I just being paranoid or is this normal? [link] [comments] |
Can I keep my U.S. number while overseas in Australia Posted: 06 Oct 2018 01:31 PM PDT I have been in the U.S. for 6 months with U.S. sim card and phone number. I want to keep this number available for iPhone uses in the U.S. to contact me on via iMessage. Is there a way to put an Australian sim card in my phone (for an indefinite amount of time) and keep my U.S. number by retaining it on 'Messages' on my Mac? Has anyone done this procedure? Thanks so much! [link] [comments] |
Apps With Voice Now Sound Like MacOS 9 Posted: 06 Oct 2018 12:40 PM PDT I've noticed that apps that used to use Siri's natural voice now sound like the old Mac OS 9 robot dude, lol. Anyone else experience this and know of a fix? Or is it up to app devs to use some new API's or something? EDIT: Noticed this in the app Streaks Workout on both iOS and tvOS. [link] [comments] |
Where do I submit wireless diagnostics? Posted: 06 Oct 2018 12:22 PM PDT My Macbook wouldn't connect to a network it's connected to pley of times before. Several other devices could connect to the AP so it wasn't the AP that was broken. My Macbook generated a big diagnostics blob I could send to Apple. But it never says where or how to send that in. Rebooting finally fixed the wireless issue, so that's okay for now. [link] [comments] |
WD Unlocker not working after updating to Mojave Posted: 06 Oct 2018 12:14 PM PDT I have a 2017 tbMBP and I recently updated to Mojave. After the update my 4TB WD MyPassport external drive no longer is recognized. I have a password set on the drive with WD Unlocker. Now when I plug in the drive WD Unlocker shows up like normal but when I click on the icon the program never starts. Instead I receive a notification saying that I need to exit and select the associated CD with the drive. Has anyone else run into this problem? I was able to access the drive before I updated to Mojave last week. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Oct 2018 11:53 AM PDT I was doing some research and found that apparently some apps can allow users to change the icon for it and was wondering if there was some kind of notepad application that would display what I type on the icon. Without a jailbreak of course. [link] [comments] |
