Posted: 07 Oct 2018 01:48 PM PDT So 2 days ago, Tech YouTuber Johnathan Morrison posted 2 selfies allegedly taken from the "Pixel 2xl" They being; It was then revealed that the portraits posted were in fact taken by the iPhone XsMax camera and not the Pixel, as initially mentioned. Reiterates that people are not only blinded by their hate for Apple, there's no constructive criticism. Draw your own conclusion. [link] [comments] |
TIL Safari on iOS 12 has built-in protection against fake software keyboard Posted: 07 Oct 2018 02:56 PM PDT I had not seen this feature mentioned anywhere so I thought I'd share. Safari on iOS 12 has a security mechanism in place to make sure malicious websites aren't displaying a software keyboard that mimics the iOS one in order to act as a keylogger. To trigger the warning: open a webpage in full-screen mode, for example a full-screen video on YouTube's mobile website. Then tap several times at the bottom of the screen, as if you were typing on an invisible keyboard. A warning message will appear telling you the website may be showing you a fake keyboard to trick you into disclosing personal or financial information. Screenshot I wasn't aware of this malicious trick before, so I would guess it's not common, but it's neat Apple has a protection against it. [link] [comments] |

Jesus! The Series 4 is so fast!! Posted: 07 Oct 2018 08:33 AM PDT So I came from a series 1, and I understand thats a couple gens behind. But this thing doesn't stall on anything! I haven't even seen the loading symbol once when opening an app. This thing is absolutely nuts! This is the Apple Watch Ive been waiting for :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Oct 2018 05:52 PM PDT Education bundle price: $199 USD / $259 CAD Total price without discount: $859 CAD I recently learned about this deal: Final Cut Pro + Motion + Compressor + Logic Pro X + MainStage 3 for $259 sounds too good to be true! I'm absolutely impressed with Apple!! This is a steal!!! I purchased FCP back when it first released for $199, but now that I'm planning to move to one Apple ID instead of having separate iCloud and iTunes accounts, I feel like this was worth the price. This has a lot of value to it. Surprisingly they didn't ask me or verify if I was still a student. Though I'm still verified on UNiDAYS, my new account isn't tied to it currently, so I guess they don't check? Nonetheless I thought I'd share, it's a sweet deal! Take advantage of your student discounts!! [link] [comments] |

Software question, my mom's iPhone 6 Plus is slowing down our wifi significantly for unknown reasons Posted: 08 Oct 2018 12:57 AM PDT So when her iPhone is connected my ping goes from 39~ to 850~ and I'm not that familiar with Apple Settings which could be downloading or auto updating some apps that could be the culprit for slowing down our WiFi. Which settings should I look at/uncheck [link] [comments] |

Why doesn’t the iPad Pro 10.5 have HDR YouTube support? Posted: 07 Oct 2018 08:33 PM PDT The iPhone X has it and boy does it look incredible but the iPad Pro 10.5 does not and I don't know why. I understand it's a google app so the reasoning must be on them so it's probably pointless to even ask this here... but why? You would think they'd be more likely to support it on the iPad than the iPhone because there's not even any google competition in the tablet space anymore. I just want the HDR YouTube support on the iPad so I can compare HDR on an OLED and IPS LCD to help with my future TV purchase. [link] [comments] |
Update: crushed blacks on HDR Netflix seem fixed Posted: 07 Oct 2018 07:16 AM PDT I spent awhile talking to a Netflix support guy who ran the problem up the chain. Looks like yesterday the app got an update. I'm pretty sure Netflix is now only sending my iPhone the SDR feed, BUT it's completely fixed the crushed blacks problem. It doesn't have that lucious HDR look, but at least you can see what's happening. Perhaps it's a temporary mitigation while a proper fix is in the works? Let me know how it's looking on your device! Especially if someone has a nice OLED TV with HDR they can compare against. Edit: https://imgur.com/a/7jYXLMd Same camera settings as before (1/60, f2.8, ISO3200, shadows +100 in lightroom.) I shot this in my pitch black garage, FWIW, but you can clearly see shadow detail now. It obviously is nicer to the human eye than this representation. [link] [comments] |
Apple Watch detects when I enter room? Posted: 07 Oct 2018 11:12 PM PDT With nightstand mode turned on and the watch connected to its charger, I've noticed that my Apple Watch Series 4 will automatically wake from sleep and display time whenever I walk within a step or two of the device. The watch is clearly detecting footsteps and and displaying the time, saving me the step of having to pick it up or hit a button. Has anyone else noticed this feature? Is it an Watch OS feature or something exclusive to Series 4? [link] [comments] |

How likely is a new version of Air Pods going to come out? Posted: 07 Oct 2018 11:05 PM PDT Hi there, I been saving up to buy a pair of Air Pods for a long time but I'm kinda worried that a new generation/version is going to come out. Anyone have any ideas if a new version is coming out soon? [link] [comments] |
Time Travel removal a pain for "Utility" and "Chronograph" faces Posted: 07 Oct 2018 04:34 PM PDT I like the Analog watch faces for the Apple Watch, but I also find the complications really useful. Up until now, "Utility" has been my favourite. One consideration with these faces is that the current date is actually under the watch hand area. This was never actually an issue while we had time travel - You could simply nudge the time forward a few minutes temporarily and see the date if the hands were over the date complication. Now with time travel gone, there's 3 minutes every hour when you can't read the date - And I'm surprised by how often it catches me out. It's compounded by the fact that if you have the calendar complication enabled, when you tap it the value "today" is shown for the date rather than the current date. So now there's no way to quickly check what the date is with out several taps. It frustrates me that Apple removed this feature and we didn't even gain any new functionality from the crown as a trade. Has anyone else found a decent solution for this since the latest software update? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Oct 2018 02:47 PM PDT From time to time you'll bump into people on the net who can't understand why anybody would buy Apple because of the "apple tax" which makes their products more expensive than other companies products. Today I experienced one of those great Apple experiences that defines perfectly why we buy Apple: I've had my iPhone 7 for 1 year and 20 days and I noticed a week ago that there was a buzzing and cracking noise coming from the top back of the phone behind the earpiece/near the antenna. As I was meeting friends for lunch in Bristol last week I took it to the Apple store there and reported it. The genius couldn't hear it on the day (busy, noisy store) and diagnostics showed no issue, so he asked me to take it home and record the sound as well as reset the phone and come back if it persisted. First thing this morning I popped down to the Apple Store in Exeter as it's closer than Bristol. 15 minutes before opening 2 staff came out and started taking Genius Bar bookings. I got a booking slot right at opening time and explained to the kind lady the issue and what the Bristol store advised. We went to a quiet place where she could hear the noise on the phone as well as the recording I made, and with that agreed to replace it on the spot. So I walked out with a brand new (I assume they're new as they come in a sealed service box), all restored in Store from my latest backup. Not only does it have its own 3 month replacement warranty but also still falls under the existing 2 year UK/EU warranty of the original phone, of which I still have 11.5 months left. With a non-Apple phone I'd no doubt have had to send it off to the Carrier or Manufacturer as Android manufactures largely don't have Stores. I'd have had to been without a phone for at least a week (probably longer) and either would have been made to pay for a replacement or been sent a free, refurbished unit. Thank you Apple for your awesome support. [link] [comments] |
Would you rather have a well optimized iOS or a feature rich iOS ? Posted: 07 Oct 2018 11:41 AM PDT In recent years Apple seems to have been focused on bringing more features to iOS, but it seems like up to iOS 11, things have been going downhill in the overall polish and experience in iOS, especially when compared to something like iOS 6. By experience, I'm talking about animation fluidity, responsiveness, everything that'll make you spontaneously say "it just works". I feel like especially when compared to iOS 11 we got a lot of that back in iOS 12 and it got me wonder what you guys would want Apple to prioritize in future iOS iterations : • Fluidity and UI/UX optimization ? • Or new feel/features/customization options [link] [comments] |
LPT: Turn on Type to Siri on Mac (and turn off Voice Feedback) to fill in the holes of Spotlight Posted: 07 Oct 2018 01:45 PM PDT There are quite a few things Siri can do that Spotlight can't. Some of my favorites are:
Edit: If you have a 2018 MacBook Pro, you can still speak to Siri with Hey Siri. [link] [comments] |
Screen Time Is the best iOS feature since copy/paste arrives Posted: 07 Oct 2018 06:48 PM PDT I've been using an iPhone since the first one was released. Some I've liked, some I haven't. I'm not partial to Apple or Google. In fact I think palm OS might still be my favorite... the Treo was really revolutionary. Anyways, screen time. I, like many, spend too much time on my phone and seeing how much time I'm actually spending on specific apps is really revealing. I use my phone a lot for legitimate work purposes that make me very productive (Slack, TeamViewer, surveillance, etc) but I still spend a ton of time playing games and browsing reddit. Giving myself a promise not to use it too long during certain times has been a welcome change to my wife and son. The best part though, and a completely unintended benefit, is screen time limits for children. My 6 year old has games on his iPad, Minecraft, Angry Birds, etc... not exactly educational. He's always had educational apps as well, but obviously he'd rather play games. With screen time, I've categorized the apps I want him limited on and allow as much time as he wants on educational apps. As a result, something amazing happened. He ran out of time on Minecraft for the day and came to my wife and I and said "Can I earn more time?" Now, I know this is unusual for a kid... most would whine and complain, my wife and I are lucky - our kid is amazingly well behaved. So now, his 1 hour daily game time limit is met with "can I do any chores to earn more time?" We have him feed the dogs and cat, clean his room up, organize toys, etc... but the most fun is saying, "yeah buddy, I'll give you another hour if you want to play outside with me for an hour." Win-win for him, he loves being outside, and it encourages all of us to spend time together. TL;DR: Screen time family limits have had fantastic benefits to the relationship, education and understanding of responsibilities with my son. One more note: I know there's plenty of ways this could have been done before screen time, but none that were nearly as intuitive... integrating it in iOS was the key, and I'm thrilled Apple did. My stolen iPhone was found! (Scam) Posted: 07 Oct 2018 06:27 PM PDT My iPhone was stolen on a trip recently. I entered my partner's phone number in case a Good Samaritan found it. I got this text the following day with obvious grammar errors "Loste" that I don't pick up at the time. They also got the model wrong once (first it was an iPhone 7 then an iPhone 8?). I was so upset first and then excited later that I missed the signals and clicked on the link. Then noticed that my iPhone was not being tracked in the Find iPhone app. The thieves were able to reset my iPhone and now it's lost forever. [link] [comments] |
Gray Bar on YouTube on iPhone XS Max Posted: 07 Oct 2018 12:23 PM PDT Ever since the iOS 12 update I have noticed a grey semi-transparent bar across the top of the YouTube app on some videos. I've recently been able to determine the cause comes from a redirect to YouTube from another app (Narwhal in the example). I can get it to go away by going back to the homes teen and launching from there so the quick access shortcut in the upper left is gone. Not sure if it's a known issue but it's driving me nuts and I have a feeling it's on Google to fix the app as I'm sure it has something to do with how they handle video in the app. [link] [comments] |
How do people have MBPs that are close to ten years old but run perfectly fine? Posted: 07 Oct 2018 07:08 AM PDT I had a 2013 (I believe) Macbook that only lasted me about 4ish years or so before it was so slow and lethargic I couldn't use it anymore. Startup would take forever and usability was almost nonexistent. I did a lot of heavy video editing on it for a majority of its life so maybe that's what sped up its aging process?
