Sometimes I forget to charge the case when I get home, and by the next time I go out with them they're outta juice. Would be nice to have a warning when they're at 15-20% to charge

Keynote is infinitely better than Powerpoint

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 02:49 PM PDT

Honestly, it's so underrated. Presentations I make in Keynote are seamless, beautiful, and the program itself is very straightforward and easy to use. Magic Move works phenomenally, and allows me to transition between points in a non-intrusive way.

Powerpoint in nature is just so bland and boring. I can't stand using the program, and I definitely can't stand seeing presentations made in Powerpoint.

Keynote just has that magic Apple touch, and although it's hard to put into words, it's really easy to realize how much more "powerful" presentations can be when they use the tools offered by Keynote properly. I learned a lot of my presentation techniques from Steve, and I am convinced that I thoroughly enjoy giving presentations because of Apple's keynote presentations. And the program is an incredibly powerful tool to help build engaging presentations.

I got a new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar recently and... I'm really liking the Touch Bar

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:48 PM PDT

I had some concerns about getting a MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar because people seem to have very mixed opinions on it. But after getting familiar with how the Touch Bar can be customized with BetterTouchTool, I'm really enjoying it. Essentially, it gives me faster access to some of my most common operations.

Here's the layout I'm currently using:

    https://i.imgur.com/HnazLGO.png

    • Light bulb - turns off the display & password must be used to log back in
    • Gear - toggle dark mode

    • Notepad - launch/activate Notes

    • Checkmark - launch/activate Things 3

    • Compass - launch/activiate Safari

    • Music note - launch/activate Spotify

    • Previous/Play/Next (controls are straightforward )

    • Minus - decrease brightness

    • Plus - increase brightness

    • Slider - control volume

    Notes:

    • Some people may ask where the Escape key is. I had an easy solution to this - I re-mapped Escape to the ~ key (without the shift). I never used that key anyway and this gives me a physical button for Escape.

    • The reason I use a slider for the volume but not for the brightness is that when I adjust my computer's brightness is usually by just a tiny bit, whereas with the volume I may go from high to low in an instant. Also, I can always see exactly how bright my screen is, but the volume slider allows me to know exactly how loud my computer will be at all times.

    • I've noticed that a lot of people like to add a widget for "Now Playing" in their touch bar, but I purposely avoided this because that's a distraction I don't always want to see and in any case, I can enter and leave Spotify in an instant using my touch bar.

    • Of course, the fingerprint sensor is absolutely fantastic.

    • Pretty much the only thing I miss about the physical buttons on the top row right now is that it's easier to accidentally trigger the buttons in the touch bar since they are very sensitive to even the slightest touches.

    • At the moment, I am using this set up for all applications, but I do appreciate that each app individually is totally customizable (and you can also tell BetterTouchTool to use the default touch bar controls for any app).

For other people who have the Touch Bar - what's your set up like?

TIL Apple has gained another $122 billion ....

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 09:37 AM PDT

in market capitalization since they hit 1 trillion dollar market capitalization on August 2nd. If Apple was a new company after $1 trillion market cap, that would make the new company about the 68th largest in terms of market cap!

PSA: If you use an @icloud.com address you won’t receive emails larger than 20mb, even if the sender can see the email in their Sent folder.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:02 PM PDT

So I just wasted half my morning fumbling through my inbox and junk mail searching for an email that my friend was supposed to send me. He swore he had sent it but I had nothing, I asked him to resend it like 1000 times but still nothing.

Turns out the email was 22 MB so I was simply not receiving it, no notifications, no notice, nothing. He showed me screenshots of his Sent folder and the emails were there, but I just didn't received them.

I just wished I knew this earlier, it would've save me a lot of time.

Reachability on the Xs Max is the worst.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 12:11 AM PDT

I keep hoping I'll get used to it or figure out the sweet spot but it really just seems to be a shitty implementation. It's made so much worse by the fact that designers don't seem to account for it. Any UI elements near the bottom of the screen get tapped at least 1/3 times that I use Reachability assuming I'm actually able to activate it. Apple pls do better. I really like the phone but this makes it so much harder to use compared to the 8 Plus I had before.

Is Apple done with the iPad Mini?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 12:26 PM PDT

I've been looking to get a tablet recently, and love the size of the mini but I'm not sure how I feel about such an old processor powering more pixels than my iPhone 7. I'm not super educated on Apple's release cycle history (I've always been an android guy before the iPhone 7, which I do plan on replacing with another iPhone as it's about 2 years and nothing from the android camp is tempting me), so I was just wondering if anyone knew when we could expect iPad/iPad mini news? such as when the next event would be etc

I tried Googling this but couldn't find anything. All that comes up is how to make it work outside the U.S., U.K. and Australia. I guess it is to make it work with subscriptions etc. but still I don't think it is impossible to make it work with the free stuff.
