Posted: 28 Sep 2018 08:21 AM PDT Here's what I'm taking about. Some popular national news websites, and local news affiliates' sites forward to this. I'm using Safari with Adblock. I've cleared the data from Safari, but this starts up again in short order. I don't visit any sketchy websites that I'm aware of. Has anyone seen this, or does anyone have a way to prevent it? People who bought an iPhone X on launch day/week, what is your battery health percentage? Posted: 28 Sep 2018 09:49 AM PDT I bought my iPhone X on launch day last year, November 3. My battery health is currently at 93%. I'm considering getting a battery replacement before the end of the year while the price is still low, but want to know if this is typical degradation for a phone that's just under a year old. Secondhand iPhone X w/iPhone Upgrade Program Posted: 28 Sep 2018 06:26 AM PDT Hi, Yesterday I bought an iPhone X from someone on OfferUp and while I don't know everything I should check for, I did check the basics—the serial number (on Apple's website) and the imei (on Swappa); Everything looked good. While I was setting it up yesterday for my mom, we noticed it said "upgrade now" in the settings and I clicked on the link. The screen said "upgrade now with one more payment of $57.16," or something along those lines. I take it the phone is not paid off and I messaged the seller this morning and he has yet to respond. My main concern is if he's paying monthly for the phone and stops paying what will happen to the phone? Did I just get screwed out of $740? Any help would be appreciated, thank you. "App would like to use your location" - "yes, for 5 minutes" option Posted: 27 Sep 2018 10:57 PM PDT Just because I want to send my location to a friend in chat once doesn't mean I want the app to always have access to my location and pool my location in my sleep to potentially sell to a third party. I wish there would be an option like "yes, just this time", or "yes, for 5 minutes". Another example, at my work we use an app where we have to "check in" with an app when we arrive/leave the office, the app needs location permission to make sure we're indeed close to the office when checking in, I don't want the app to have access to my location outside of this punctual time. I know you can disable the permission manually but it's too easy to forget, and a bit inconvenient. I think it would be a great addition for privacy. What do you think? [link] [comments]

Upgrade to iPhone X instead of iPhone Xs? Posted: 27 Sep 2018 11:45 PM PDT I'm currently using a 6s and I've been meaning to embrace the notch for a while now since the Xs announcement but I've been getting second thought of getting a X instead cos the lowered price from 3rd party retailer, the 'filter-gate' selfie camera and the supposedly notched/worse battery. The price difference is about USD$130 between the 256gb model of X and Xs from the retailer I checked. Should I go with this logic and save myself a hundie? [link] [comments]
Can we still not fully turn off WI-FI from the control center? Or am I missing something. Posted: 28 Sep 2018 08:21 AM PDT This has bugged me since it's been implemented. If I turn of WI-FI in the control center I want it off. Not toggled, off. Am I missing a setting to make this happen? [link] [comments]
Anyone else’s battery life on iPhone X significantly draining faster on iOS 12 than on iOS 11? Posted: 27 Sep 2018 06:23 PM PDT
Posted: 27 Sep 2018 08:33 PM PDT Hey, /r/iphone! How are you guys enjoying your fancy new i'Thangs? In celebration of iOS12, I'm testing a new product that I feel is pretty useful. As many of you know, there's some cool DNS ad-blocking solutions out there, like Pi-hole for example. For those who aren't too familiar with DNS, it's the internet protocol which looks up domain names and returns an IP address; the telephone book of the Internet. It's a great way to block ads, because you can disable the lookup of "malicious-popup-source.com', rendering it unable to serve you those juicy massive banner ads. Unlike browser-based ad-blocking extensions like uBlock Origin which simply make the ads invisible, DNS ad-blocking makes it so that the advertisement doesn't even load 1kb of data to your device. It blocks it at the source! DNS-based ad-blocking is usually as easy as switching your DNS servers! But the problem is, iOS doesn't let you change your DNS on cellular data – only WiFi. But when there's a will, there's a way. It's sort of a hacky solution at the moment, but I created heatsink.io. It takes advantage of iOS's built in VPS functionality to tunnel & encrypt all your DNS lookups. Not only does it prevent AT&T, Verizon, etc. from hijacking your DNS, which allows them to If you're privacy concerned, don't worry, so am I. That's why there's no logs kept, and all the users share the same VPN profile, so even if somebody breached the network and enabled logging somehow, there'd be no way of knowing who's who, since it's essentially only one user creating all the activity. All DNS is forwarded to Cloudflare's encrypted 1.1.1.1 service, which seemingly is the most trusted + fast DNS provider at the moment. Here's the VPN server config, for transparency. All you have to do is install the OpenVPN app (open source, highly reputable), download heatsink's OpenVPN profile, add the VPN profile to your iOS Settings via the OpenVPN app, and then simply check the "VPN" box on the main iOS Settings menu when you want to enable your DNS encryption/ad-blocking. For my personal use, I've simply left the "VPN" box checked permanently and it works flawlessly. If you have any problems, or just want to see how simple the install is, here's a walkthrough video. Keep in mind, unlike other VPN services, this VPN DOES NOT encrypt all your traffic. It ONLY ENCRYPTS YOUR DNS + BLOCKS BAD THINGS FROM COMING THROUGH YOUR DNS! So, if you're the Edward Snowden type... go get a full-featured VPN, or better yet, run and manage one yourself. It's currently free because I'm testing it and I plan on keeping it free for at least 4+ months while I flesh out the solution. So yeah, in theory, you can now visit websites with tons of ads from your iPhone with only cellular data enabled – without your carrier being able to spy on your browser history, and block all those nasty ads, tracking, background cryptomining scripts, etc. in the process. On any browser, in any app. Game app has annoying ads? Gone. Stock trading app has banner ads on the bottom? Gone. Porn has pre-rolls? Gone. That's just the beginning. It makes a huge difference. Let me know your feedback, comments... and even better, let me know if you find bugs. The official subreddit is /r/heatsinkio, or feel free to post here! Thanks! [link] [comments]

Luxury Iphone Xs Max Leather Cases? Posted: 28 Sep 2018 08:06 AM PDT Hello everyone! I'm a bit of a leather nerd and have been somewhat disappointed by the lack of options and quality in the Leather cases I have been able to find. Are there any companies making nice leather cases with actual protection built in? The Nomad cases looked somewhat interesting, but they are backordered until november. Also, i'd really love to get Burgundy/Olive/maybe navy leather as I have a gold xs max. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:27 AM PDT Does anyone feel like the touch screen is overly sensitive on Spotify for some reason? I feel like I'm going crazy I scroll down pages and it just randomly picks a new song or goes into playlists...? Am I the only one? [link] [comments]
XS poor cellular connection and speeds Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:14 AM PDT I have an XS I've had it a week now almost and I have noticed I consistently only get 1 - 2 bars on LTE. I am with ATT and in the middle of a metro town a few miles tops from a major interstate. I've never had a cellular connection or speed issues. I can connect full bars on my daughters old janky iphone 6 and it is much faster loading websites. I have reset my data button from the drop down control menu as well as gone into the cellular data and turned off the slider and back on there in an attempt to restart my connection. I have rebooted the phone. Speed test shows only a 1.25 download and upload is 0.25 on the XS. What in the world is going on? Is anyone else having similar issues? My wife's brand new XS is doing EXACTLY as mine is.. sometimes a bit worse when we stand beside each other and run the tests at the same time. Love the phone but sucks when a 4-year-old iPhone 6 outperforms it. [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:44 AM PDT Just like the title says, my brand new XS Max drops every call. After lots of calls with Apple Support and AT&T, Apple will be replacing my device. After hearing talk of poor connection on the new phones and witnessing an egregious example first hand, how can I test the new device before walking out of the store with the replacement?
