Does anyone else hate the new FaceTime update?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 04:34 AM PDT

They changed a lot in FaceTime. Although you get some more features (which I think are gimmicky anyways), they messed it up so bad. The camera flip is in a-whole-nother spot where you have to swipe up and then hit it, then it's delayed. You can't take Live Photo's anymore. And now mute is in the options instead of on the screen. It just seems like they went backwards on this one.

iPhone 7 Review, After 2 Years

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:28 AM PDT

I'm sure the iPhone 7 looks real attractive now that it's sitting at $450. 2 years ago that was a flagship model. I wanted to use this review as a chance to tell how it holds up today and especially after 2 years of use.

Usability: even before ios12 I almost never experienced slowdown or hitches in the OS. It blazed through most every app, download speeds were fast, and loading time were minimal. At no point did I ever feel it needed more power or more ram. Solid.

Hardware: jet black stayed sexy dark. It gained polished edges where i used the phone the most. The battery lasted me all day. However towards the end I found I needed to charge halfway through if I didn't want to see the red battery. I would say the battery was significantly better than the 6/6s and enough to get through the day comfortably. I was worried the haptic engine would give out but it stayed clean and recognizable throughout all my use. Touch ID was almost not recognizable. Besides water or obvious issues, Touch ID was fast and consistently great. It just always worked. The speakers became distorted after about a year. Not awful, but only good enough to listen to a podcast or quick videos to. Otherwise unpleasant to listen to. Initially it was very good though.

Camera: absolutely wonderful. I use a DSLR but would still default to my iPhone camera on trips. The pictures were solid, clear, and detailed. Even nighttime photos turned out well enough to use. Friends would ask to use my phone over theirs because it was reliable and always made strong/good photos. Gallery worthy? No. But for memories or Instagram? Perfect. I can't say enough what a great camera this had.

Those were the big things I wanted to point out. The main points I find myself struggling over with any phone in the past decade. (For the most part). The phone was perfect for me. Strong in every area. Battery, camera, speed quality. Definitely the first phone I've used that feels completely future proof and refined. I feel like every iPhone before has struggled to stand the test of time. My iPhone 6 barely lasted, and my 5 was a joke after 2 years.

I have friends wanting to switch to iPhone or looking to upgrade phones. If money is a problem, but iPhone is a goal for them, then the 7 is king at $450. It is a flagship phone with flagship build and flagship features for a $450 price. I would buy the phone again. Everything I prefer about iPhone is here in one great package. And it will most certainly be able to power every future iOS update to come.

Hopefully this give people here an idea of what they are looking to buy. Hope this helps some.

My new XS Max felt like blurring out a random portion of this building

anyone else still sticking on 6s plus?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 06:40 AM PDT

Went down to try the new xs and xs max. It looked great but I didn't feel like I needed to upgraded ever since updating to iOS12, especially at the price apple is asking for. Anyone in the same shoes as me? Guess I'll go replace my battery in the next few weeks since it's at 79%

Because Of Apple Pay, I ALMOST don't need my wallet

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 08:04 AM PDT

I don't carry cash...which I think is pretty common these days. I have on primary credit card that I use for most of my purchases and I pay that off at the end of the month. The only reason I even need my wallet at this point is for my driver's license and because every merchant doesn't accept Apple Pay. Do you think there will be a time when we don't need a wallet?

Any good scanner app for iPhone that does not require monthly subscription?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 07:40 AM PDT

I used to use Microsoft OfficeLens, but for some reason its scans come out as plain-old pictures these days. Most of the scanner apps I looked up seem to want $2-10 per month. I can neither afford that amount nor I think they are worth that much.

I am willing to pay up to $5 for a scanner app that is good for occasional personal uses like scanning documents as PDF or creating multi-pages PDF out of a scan and does not have any monthly subscription.

Any recommendations would be great. Thank you.

Battery Life Xs Max Is Unreal

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 09:18 AM PDT

Anyone else having the same experience as me with the Xs Max battery. I'm going on almost 24 hours now of normal use and still sitting close to 45% I just can't believe how good the battery is in this thing.

    I do use auto-brightness.

My normal use is mostly just reddit and twitter, some music and texts.

Deff much better battery usage on the Xs Max compared to my X.

How is everyone else experiencing their?

Fortunately Reddit counts in the new screen time display as "reading & looking up". At least that's how I look productive.

I created a Siri Shortcut that performs a Google reverse image search.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:57 AM PDT

    https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/83a90a91d60b4934b3582b1646df7c87

I was only a light WorkFlow user, so this shortcut might not be as efficient, or effective, as it could: so all commentary is most welcome, so I can learn.

I made it so that the shortcut is as versatile as possible, enabling it to work wherever or however you activate it, and is capable of processing a specific image of your choice, either: * directly from the shortcut button; or * from your clipboard; or * from your photo album.

The search results will open in Safari.

How it operates 1. If the shortcut is run directly from an image, it will search immediately for that image.

    1. Otherwise, the shortcut will determine if the clipboard has an image in it.

    2. If not, it will bring up the photo album immediately.

    3. If there is, a menu will ask whether you wish to use this image in the clipboard, or alternatively, an image of your choosing from the photo album.

    4. If you choose to use the clipboard image, the search will run immediately.

    5. If you don't want to use that image on the clipboard, and so select Photo Album instead, the Photos app will open, enabling you to select the photo you wish to use. The search will then run immediately.

Please note that, apparently, Google places a cooling off period for reverse image searching from your phone. I am now receiving a message saying "search by image is unavailable, please try again in a few hours" - but perhaps that is because I have been using the feature excessively, whilst testing this shortcut. Feedback on this would be very useful.

My impression of the Xs after a few days.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:45 AM PDT

For those waiting eagerly for their phone to come in the mail, or on the fence, I wanted to write this for. I moved up from the iPhone. So the jump to this generation has been profound to say the least.

From the first moment of opening the box to holding it everyday has been, simply, a joy. It feels incredibly premium. Like I'm holding a device from the future. Everything here feels like a decade worth of technology matured and brought into one phone. Honestly I thought the upgrade would be decent with the screen. But it absolutely blows me away. Colors, lines, contrast, everything looks superb. I've been looking at every photo I can just so I can have an excuse to crank the brightness and stare. Compared to the 7, this screen looks like magic.

Everything here feels like top quality. The look and finish, the speed, the camera, etc. I went back to holding my old 7 today and I felt like I did when I held my iPhone 4 to my 6. Just a clear jump in technology and refinement.

I couldn't imagine the jump from the X to the Xs would be worth it, however the jump from the 5s/6s/7 would be well worth it.

My only issue, frankly, is Face ID. When it works, it's magic. But when it doesn't work or is slower than Touch ID I do get frustrated. Like I traded a perfect, lightning fast Touch ID for a slower Face ID. It's a hard pill to swallow when I unlock my phone a hundred times a day. And I have to LOOK at my phone to do it. Another hurdle.

Overall this phone is CLEAN. And coming from the 7 has made my jaw drop. The technology here is sexy and I can't stop Wowing over it. Just a few impressions.

Pro-Tip, if you have a MacBook Pro with USB C, ask them to exchange your lightning cable for the USB C one.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 10:03 AM PDT

I just got back from the Apple store because the usb to lightning cable that came with my iPhone doesn't plug into my MacBook Pro. I asked them to exchange it and they did so, no questions asked.

Do Not Disturb not working with WhatsApp calls

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 07:23 AM PDT

As title says. I've just been forcefully woken up by my friend calling me with WhatsApp even though I had Do not Disturb turned on. He also isn't part of my favourites contacts. So AirPlane mode from now on when I try to take my afternoon nap!

Edit: Turns out it only works with Apple apps, so DnD is basically useless for me...

iPhone XS auto-dimming is way too dim!

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 07:51 AM PDT

In a dark room or dim room it dims to lowest brightness. I can barely see it in a dim room. Is my phone broken?

I tested my X and 7 and they both never go to zero brightness. All three phones have iOS 12.

Iphone 7. Never backed up manually. Lost information forever?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 05:52 AM PDT

Hi ya'll. This post is regarding someone else's phone. I don't have an iPhone myself so I'm not accustomed to the apple characteristics.

My cousin's iPhone 7 turned off and is stuck in apple logo mode. Verizon sent me a new phone to replace the current phone with. My cousin is nervous about spending back the old phone because it possesses sensitive documents. Is there any way to reaccess the data if it's never been manually backed up? I'm not sure if apple backs up by itself. My Samsung does so I never worry about it. My cousin doesn't speak or read English so I have no way to confirm it he's backed it up intentionally or accidentally.

Is there confirmation that they won't be able to access my cousins personal data from his phone when refurbishing?

    Thanks.

    iOS 12 battery issues?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 06:38 AM PDT

Anybody else having problems? Pulled my 6s+ off the charger at 4:30, it was down to 93% by 5:30, by 7:30 it was at 1%. I powered down and when I powered back up it was 39%. Charged up to 80% now.

iPhone 8, recent update to iOS 12. Odd notification sound.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 09:07 AM PDT

Since the update, a friend's iPhone 8 is doing something odd. The notification sound when receiving a text message "echoes". Normal sound is "ping", now it's "pingpingingingingngngggg", as if it's glitched.

If she changes ringtones it goes away, for a while. Then it comes back. Sometimes it goes away on its own, but always comes back.

Suggestions? I don't know iPhone very well so I don't know how to assist him... Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask.

Wireless charging for the XS Max?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 08:56 AM PDT

I was shopping around Amazon for a wireless charger and noticed that some don't say they are compatible with the XS Max. Are there any specific specs I should be looking for when shopping for a charging pad?

Backing up via iTunes vs iCloud?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 06:07 AM PDT

Is there much of a difference? Getting my Xs Max today, and was wondering now that there's iCloud backup for messages, is there anything iTunes backs up that iCloud doesn't?

Like apps for instance. Does iCloud back them up and reinstall like an iTunes backup does?

    Thanks!

Anyone changed from the Galax S9+ to the iPhone XS?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 05:56 AM PDT

Is it worth it? I'm tires of Samsung's Software update management and the whole samsung experience thing and I just love the new iPhone Design and what Apple is doing with their OS now.
