Photos.app photo library after recovering damaged hard drive Posted: 26 Sep 2018 09:24 AM PDT A family member recently experienced physical failure on a hard drive and had a data recovery company get the data back. They reported that over 99% of the data was recovered, which was mostly a ~300GB Photos library (just to clarify, the Apple native Photos.app, the successor to iPhoto). When selecting the recovered library in Photos, the albums show up with their respective photos in the left-hand sidebar, but when just clicking "Photos" in the top-left, it's blank and it has the introductory "Here's how to get started" text. I believe part of the index (if that's the right word) may have been corrupted, which would explain issues with the photo library, but is there any way to access, rebuild, or otherwise troubleshoot the issue? An update is required to activate your iPhone? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 10:16 PM PDT Anyone see this on an iPhone 7 before? It won't even get through the activation screen... and there is no option to update. [link] [comments] |
Transfered iCloud Backup into new iPhone Xs, Watch Activity data dissapeared! Posted: 26 Sep 2018 10:07 PM PDT Help! I just restored an iCloud backup from my old phone to a new iPhone Xs Max. The Activity data on my activity app from september 18th and earlier dissapeared! It's strange because this was an iCloud backup so I dont think it's an encryption issue? I was on a year long streak too so I am really sad miss this. The health app shows all my workouts, but doesn't show any activity data before september 19th!! Is there any way to resolve this?? I really don't want to lose this data as I have years of activity on it. [link] [comments] |
Switching to Mail.app while in fullscreen app problem Posted: 26 Sep 2018 09:34 PM PDT Hello, I upgraded to Mojave upon release, and since then I have been experiencing some odd problems with Mail. I usually run Mail in non-fullscreen mode. However, whenever I CMD+TAB (to switch app) from a fullscreen Safari window to Mail, mail decides that it will go fullscreen and split view with the Safari session. This is a new behaviour for me. Does any of you have any ideas on how to stop Mail from doing this? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2018 09:20 PM PDT Not sure if this just happened with the Mojave install or the latest iTunes update, but I can't figure out how to transfer my comic book files to my iPad. Before when I plugged in my iPad, I could select it in iTunes and then transfer the files to my comic book reader on the iPad. Today, I can't see where t select the iPad in iTunes. Both devices are fully updated on software and both had a fresh reboot. Any help? [link] [comments] |
Print dialog box for EPSON printer is crippled since macOS High Sierra Posted: 26 Sep 2018 08:46 PM PDT I was hoping Mojave would fix this but it made it worse: Ever since upgrading to High Sierra, the print dialog for Photos.app has been crippled for my Epson printer. Instead of being able to control a bunch of things like platen gap, DIP, print speed, etc, the current dialog box is very limited and has options which don't seem to do anything: i.e. There's an option called "Mode:" now with a dropdown selection of "Advanced" or "Automatic". You'd think selecting "Advanced" would give some more options/features but it doesn't. Just weird stuff like this... My workaround was to export my photos to Preview.app as the dialog box there is unaffected and I could select options and have full control over my printing needs still. However, with Mojave the print dialog in Preview.app is the same as Photos.app now. Anyone else out there with EPSON photo printers and having similar issues? I hope there's a fix. I've already reached out to EPSON without any luck and I've tried re-installing printer drivers and deleting/re-adding my printer, etc. See images here: https://image.ibb.co/kZYjxU/New_style_almost_useless_print_dialog.png https://image.ibb.co/m46trp/Old_style_useful_print_dialog.png Thanks! Text message forwarding no longer working after iOS 12 update Posted: 26 Sep 2018 07:46 PM PDT I had set up text message forwarding to my iPad and MacBook. Since I upgraded to the xs max on Friday I've had issues with the messages forwarding to the other devices. Other iOS devices that send me messages work but anyone on Android (or the dreaded green bubbles) do not get forwarded and I cannot send them messages without getting errors. Edit: sorry about the title being misleading and this not being an iOS 12 issue. I am posting on Apollo and thought I had another chance to change the title but it posted. [link] [comments] |
iMessage: New phone not getting texts my macbook does Posted: 26 Sep 2018 07:31 PM PDT Hi, I just switched from a 6S to an SE and while I'm able to send/receive texts just fine, but the texts I don't get the same texts on my macbook as I do on my phone. All the text chains that I got on my old 6S are showing up on my Macbook, but not my SE - and the only texts showing on my SE are new text chains. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Facebook is working, however I keep getting prompted to put in my password through Ipad Settings. Posted: 26 Sep 2018 01:33 PM PDT i have tried everything from resetting my whole ipad to factory default, playing with settings/app/safari logins, changing passwords, resetting various unrelated settings... To no avail. It's an older ipad running IOS 9.3.5. I have read of similar problems on other forums but I have not found a solution that works yet. I am trying to sync game data from a game I like to play, but I need to fix this problem first. I usually find the answers to my problems through google, but I am pretty much past the first 10 pages of every search iteration I have tried. I appreciate any help I can get! Here is a screenshot of the prompt: Screenshot Extra notes: Every time I try to login from settings, it actually works. I see the checkmarks and it lets me through... Then it disconnects again. Apple Account Question for Brand New User Posted: 26 Sep 2018 07:25 PM PDT I just got an iPhone X today and I don't really know how to use it. One thing that bothers me is I cannot disable iCloud whenever I sign in and can only disable it if I log out after. I never use or trust any online storage services for any device. Is there any way I can still stay signed in so I can use the app store but not have my personal data such as contacts, images, or my messages be automatically uploaded as that's the reason I went with 256gb for physical storage. On a side note, is there any way to disable the quick select app bar in the messaging app? [link] [comments] |
Horizontal lines on display of late 2011 MacBook Pro - WHAT HAPPENED? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 03:27 PM PDT My computer went to sleep and it wouldn't wake up. So I held down the power button and then powered back up. When I did, it started booting but I never got the black screen with the white Apple logo. I got this: https://imgur.com/a/rsCsPoE Does this look like the video card? Mother board? Demonic possession? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2018 10:28 AM PDT I tried to run disk utility first aid today, however it was unable to complete due to the following corruption: Running First Aid on "Macintosh HD" (disk1s1) Can anyone tell me how to repair it? My MacBook works normally except at startup when I see those TV blurred lines when you can't get a channel, if you know what I am talking about. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Improving Internals on an Early 2011 15" MBP? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:39 PM PDT Hi! I only really use my old Macbook for writing and leisurely internet browsing, but I was wondering if it makes sense at this point to invest less than $200 CDN to switch to a solid state drive and up my ram from 4GB to 8GB. Aside from an issue with the video card, a bum charger, and a battery swap, this thing has been running fine. I'm just wondering if this would help me get a few more years out of it, or if I'm better off putting that into the new laptop fund if it ever gets busted. [link] [comments] |
Is there any way that Apple Watch users could have their most recent notifications on top? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:16 PM PDT I don't mind that they're organized by app, but I would like like to see the most recent one first. For example, if I'm following a ball game and I get a notification about a score, I have to scroll through all of the other previous notifications about the game before I can read about who scored what. If I'm just missing something that should be completely obvious, please tell me. By the way: iOS 12.0, iPhone 8+, WatchOS 5, Apple Watch Series 4. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:05 PM PDT I've been using Mac devices for about eight years. Never have I experience a failure of this magnitude. Everything failed on me, and I've lost trust in every Apple product I own. My setup is like this: Also this, for redundancy: I've been using variations this setup for years, mostly without a problem. I have had to use Time Machine to recover from failed SSDs, and have used both Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner to retrieve old versions of documents. A few weeks ago, I noticed a minor problem: files and folders that I had deleted on the iMac were not being deleted on the Mac Mini. Everything else synced as expected - file creation, modification, renaming, moving - just not deletions. Yesterday evening, I decided to address the problem. I logged the Mac Mini out of iCloud Drive (all shared files disappeared) and then logged back in (the deleted files came back along with the non-deleted ones). I then checked iCloud Drive via a web browser and found that the deleted files existed there, too. I realized that the issue was probably with my iMac not pushing notifications of file/folder deletions up to iCloud Drive. I checked the Console and found lots of inscrutable error messages, like: "MacOS error: -67050". I did the simple, obvious things first: I ran First Aid on the volume; I checked and repaired permissions; I rebooted; I logged out of iCloud and back in. Nothing addressed the problems. I downloaded a utility called EtreCheck, which informed me that there were no major problems. It also informed me about a few unsigned kexts and asked me to verify or remove them. I verified the one for Sophos and declined two others; EtreCheck advised me to reboot to complete the process. The reboot led to a progress bar that seemed to be taking a while, and since it was late, I decided to let it run to completion overnight. When I awoke this morning, the progress bar hadn't moved. I found that I could no longer boot the volume. I could access Recovery, but that was it: any attempt to boot caused it to lock up. I turned on both Safe Mode and Verbose Mode and found that it was really dragging its feet on some steps involving Time Machine. I tried restoring from Time Machine. My primary drive is 500gb; Time Machine took 30 minutes to restore the first 12 kilobytes, and then managed to increase it to about 500 megabytes per hour. I found some instructions about repairing the OS from Recovery Mode while leaving applications, documents, and user data intact. I followed the instructions, and was dismayed that the repair hit "34 minutes remaining" and then got stuck there for over an hour. When I rebooted (again into Recovery Mode), I found that not only had no OS been installed on my computer... but the volume had been completely wiped. I decided to start from complete scratch. With the drive formatted, I installed all of MacOS from its local image. The installer offered to install MacOS anew, but to import my settings and data from a Time Machine image. However, every time I selected the latest image, the installer just eventually locked up and failed. I decided not to follow that option, and eventually - finally! - found myself with a working MacOS install. I signed into iCloud, turned on iCloud Drive, and turned off Optimize Disk Storage. To my surprise, it's not downloading any data whatsoever. I can still see all of my files on iCloud Drive, I can download them individually, but I'm at my wit's end. Time Machine failed me; iCloud Drive failed me; MacOS itself failed me. I have no idea how to force iCloud Drive to download my data. Also, I now have to reinstall and reconfigure every application, recreate every user account, and somehow reconstruct my Firefox boomarks. And now I need to look into replacements for both Time Machine and iCloud Drive. Ugh. What an awful day. If anyone has any ideas - particularly for forcing iCloud Drive to give me my !@#$ing data - I'd really appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Need to transfer storage off of 2018 Macbook Pro with cracked screen... nothing works. Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:03 PM PDT Tried everything here. I am getting a replacement w/ insurance, but need some data off of this 2018 15". The screen is cracked and completely blank when I turn on the computer. No icons on the TouchBar show up other than the esc key. Connecting to an external monitor using USB-C to HDMI adapter doesn't even register as a connection on the monitor anymore, and nothing displays. Still makes alert sounds when turned off and when charger is plugged in. Very confusing situation...why does the OS apparently not start up if just the screen is damaged? I have a 2015 Macbook Pro that I attempted to transfer the data to using Target Disk Mode, but when connecting the two laptops using USB-C to Thunderbolt adapter and starting up the broken one using the "hold T" method, the 2018 disk doesn't up on the 2015. Any options here other than taking it to a repair shop and pay to open it up? [link] [comments] |
The backlight went out after I replaced the display panel on my iMac 21.5 inch late 2012 Posted: 26 Sep 2018 05:48 PM PDT I initially was going to replace the HDD with a SSD, but I accidentally broke the glass. Luckily I had a spare display panel that matched, except slightly newer. After I swapped out the display panels everything was fine until the backlight stopped working after a few hours. I can still see the display if I shine a torch up to it. I've sent it to an authorized Apple repair, they did an MRI and claim the logic board and display panel failed and needs replacing. What caused the backlight to fail? And is the display really dead or is that what they just claim because it's not the original. Is the backlight fixable? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2018 11:49 AM PDT Hi guys, everything was working fine on my iMac 27" last night I normally don't turn off my computer it just goes to sleep This morning it wouldn't turn on and I got a circle with a diagonal line in it, then I tried force starting it and now its stuck on the loading bar, What do I do???? Grey flickering screen MacBook 2014 Posted: 26 Sep 2018 05:00 PM PDT So I just updated my laptop to Mojave and for some reason my laptop boots up and a couple seconds in the screen starts flickering grey and the fans start spinning. Any ideas of what's going on with it? [link] [comments] |
Does the Genius bar have a limit on how long they hold repairs? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 12:45 PM PDT I dropped off an item for repair a few months ago before I moved and I'll be back in a few weeks to pick it up but the store number doesn't work for some reason. I still have my receipt or repair paper they give you once they take it in. Will I have any problems collecting it? Do they ever get rid of items that haven't been picked up in a long time? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 04:12 PM PDT Hello, I'm having an issue within the devices signed into my Apple ID. There are 4 phones for my parents & sister. When I try to text my sister for example, my mom receives it & vice versa. When I go to start a text message & choose my sisters contact, it'll say her name & it'll stay in that convo but it'll show up on my mother's phone & not hers. It's like their contacts merged or something I'm not sure. We're all using iOS 12 & we all have it so we only receive / send messages to each individual device so it's not because we're sharing. I've reset each phone I've enabled & disabled iMessage on each one & the issue persists. None of us use iCloud. [link] [comments] |
Pictures in my photos’ memories aren’t sorting properly even with the correct dates and times. Posted: 26 Sep 2018 03:52 PM PDT If there is another place that suits this question better, please let me know. I've tried searching for similar experiences and/or solutions, but perhaps I'm not searching hard enough because I haven't seen anything. Quick information: it's a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13" running High Sierra (version 10.13.6) So anyway, my issue... over the last couple years, I've been on some trips with a friend and we each took a ton of pictures, but I didn't have location services turned on so I've been going through them all and adding locations (as well as putting proper times on pictures I saved from my friend). In the process, I noticed that some of them aren't in the right order. For example, there's a specific 9 pictures that are particularly frustrating in this because it's when I discovered this... 7 pictures were taken at home, the last of which is timestamped at 10:38:23am (will refer to as pic7). After those, we travelled into the city and took a bunch more pictures, the first and last of those were taken at 11:39:43am and 2:24:49pm respectively. Now, the other 2 of the 9... first of which was taken at 5:19:16pm (pic8). Don't know if the second/last is needed, but it was taken at 6:26:35pm. Both were also taken at home. Now with this background, I'll explain the frustration. Those first 7 pictures and the last two will not go to their proper side of the group of city pictures that were taken between them. In the memories section, is it not supposed to sort the pictures in order of the timestamps? If so, why is it this group of 9 pictures is staying clumped together despite the huge time (and 60 other pictures!) between number 7 and 8? I've experimented a bit and changed the timestamps by one second on one, on two, three, all 9 with different combinations, but they won't ungroup. All these pictures are in the same time zone, I made sure of that as well. Even though they share a location, shouldn't the time difference be enough to keep them at least in separate 'memories'? Or am I just understanding this all wrong? Now, it's possible everything I said was confusing, so if anyone wants clarification, I'll do my best to explain some more. I'm just really hoping someone can help or provide a solution, or even let me know that I'm not the only one that has experienced this. [link] [comments] |
