The precision of handwriting on the iPad Pro is amazing. A quick comparison between the Apple Pencil and my Lamy 2000 EF Fountain Pen

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 07:12 PM PDT

    Link to Imgur Gallery

So, this was done on a 12.9" iPad pro. The app I used was Notability (what I take notes in). It came about when I was having a discussion on /r/penmanshipporn about how remarkably like a fountain pen the Apple Pencil feels, in the way it glides over glass. It was clearly designed by someone who loved and appreciated fountain pens, so out of curiosity I wrote the same things side by side. I have tiny handwriting, so it was interesting to see how closely they match. The only reason it does is because the feel of these two writing instruments is SO similar that muscle memory does it justice.

The specs of the sticky note... yeah... it's a sticky note. ^_^

The Lamy 2000 is a beautiful fountain pen. Mine has an extra fine Nib, and I'm using Kon Peki ink.

So, yeah, there you go. Props to whomever designed the Apple Pencil over in Cupertino.... you did an amazing job. I love and use both of these writing instruments all the time.

Speculation about this year's big iPhone feature

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 01:13 PM PDT

The only thing we seem to know about the new iPhones is the usual annual improvements (faster, better camera, etc) but we still don't know about any big feature.

Wouldn't it be great if something that the leaks haven't shown is that the new products coming out work with long-range wireless charging? What if AirPower is true to its name and actually is the base in which long-range charging is used with? Apple bought out Energous, the company that made this tech possible, and maybe this is the year in which Apple was able to make it ready for the mass markets. In December 2017, Energous's WattUp got FCC Certification.

Also, I'd love ProMotion on the iPhone as well.

    Thoughts?

    [Edit]

-Okay, turns out Apple never bought Energous, but they're at least partnered together.

-Yes, it's going to be an "S" year, but each "S" year, the iPhones got some cool new features.

iOS should have allow for two different passcodes on one phone which unlock different features

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 02:41 PM PDT

I was thinking this in terms of a parent and child. The child has a passcode/face ID to their parents phone where it would load into parental mode where apps and mature content is restricted.

Also it could have other features like requires more authentication to text people etc so the child can basically do no harm. Then when the parent takes the phone back the phone recognises it it the parent (Face ID or touch) and all the features are restored.

Why isn’t Medical ID in the iPhone setup?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 08:34 PM PDT

It can be life saving and a lot of people don't even know about it. Instead of asking for permission to send data to Apple for diagnostic purposes, why not give the opportunity to new owners to fill their ID right from the start?

Put name or initials inside your charger so you can later identify it with others.

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 06:05 PM PDT

Not sure if everyone knows this already but I just decided to share. This has saved me multiple times when someone would say it's their charger, I would just open it and show them my initials. Heres what I mean.

What the hell went wrong with Airpower?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:55 AM PDT

Its been a year since it was announced, and we havent even seen a real life demo of the device. Same goes for the wireless airpod charger.

    Any ideas as to why?

Why does nobody talk about bringing ProMotion to Mac?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 09:14 AM PDT

With the iPad Pro, Apple introduced the ProMotion display - 120hz, variable refresh rate. For those who have used PCs with high refresh rate displays, you know how much of a difference this makes in just interacting with the machine.

I don't recall a single time I've seen someone talk about bringing ProMotion to Macs, and IMO it would be a great feature to include on the MacBook Pro, further separating the MBP from the MacBook (and also the MacBook Air if it gets refreshed like the rumors suggest). High refresh rates are a massive quality-of-life increase in general feel and look, on top of potential battery saving like on the iPad.

There are few high end Windows laptops that feature high refresh rate displays, and most of them that do are large and bulky machines tailored mainly for gaming. In my opinion, if added to the MacBook Pro, would be yet another feature and quality that separates it above all other competition. I'd love to hear some other's thoughts on this.

What's your least favorite Apple product?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 06:30 AM PDT

For me, it's the Beats headphones.

There's no doubt that Beats look nice and fits the Apple aesthetic, but they're such an inferior product to other headphones I've tried in the price range and category when it comes to sound quality, comfort, and noise cancellation (basically the things you want a premium headphone for).

Not to mention... it might just be because I have a large head, but the Beats on-ear headphones are horribly uncomfortable. How the heck does anyone wear these things? Even stretching them all the way out, wearing them feels like my ears are being put to death.

I’m amazed by the HomePod quality.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 12:59 AM PDT

So I was pretty skeptical about it at first. I usually just use my PC to stream music but I get pretty lazy to pair it with my phone when I'm laying in bed so I was aiming for a "smarter" speaker.

I'm on a trip to the states right now and tested it on the Apple Store in Cupertino where they had it set in stereo mode. Oh boy, that sound quality test was amazing.

I got myself one for a pretty good deal on eBay, a guy who bought it, used it once and didn't like it. Snatched it for 260$ and it arrived today.

Quick setup, sound test and wow. The sound is super loud, clear, bass is pretty solid compared to its size and oh man... that microphone pickup range. Fucking brilliant.

I'm so tempted to buy another one for the stereo pairing. I love it so far! Always amazes me how does it again every fucking time, even out of their field of expertise.

My iMac Randomly had an open Terminal window with these things on it. Should I be worried?

the disk2s1 is an SD card i put in my computer recently and copied a bunch of videos to. I tried searching the lines and some of the discussion was around roots and systems so I'm worried that maybe its indicative of someone trying to hack into something? Does anyone know what this means?

Screw the critics.. I have 3 HomePods and I absolutely love them.

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 10:16 AM PDT

So much negativity around the HomePod, but I'm someone who bought into the dream and put one on each floor in my house and I absolutely love them.

    A few observations:

    1. They sound amazing. I've had a few Sonos speakers and the HomePod crushes them from an audio perspective.
    2. My kids love them and the integrate into Apple Music flawlessly. Yeah, Google or Amazon may have more assistant features, but at what trade off? I have zero privacy concerns with my HomePod, while I would want nothing to do with Google or Amazon constantly listening in my house.
    3. They just work - and very cleanly. While Sonos worked, the app is a pile of garbage and I had constant connectivity issues with mine. My HomePods work flawlessly, every time I use them.

If you're on the fence, pull the trigger. As always with Apple, you know they'll support and add features to these for years, so you can be sure your investment won't be for nothing in 12 months.

Edit: Love that I'm being down voted on an Apple subreddit because I posted that I bought an Apple product and am really happy with it LOL..

    camera improvements I would love

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 05:53 PM PDT

camera improvements I would love to see is:

    1. Being able to frame up different sizes while taking the photo. More specifically the 9x16 for Instagram story.

    2. Built in level for shooting straight. There's one for when you point the camera down, why not have one for holding it up. You can even incorporate live mode to get the most level shot in between hand shakes.

    3. Blurring out the background on inanimate objects. I currently use portrait mode to take photos of things like cups and that but I think it could be better as I have to move the camera back so far and sometimes it doesn't pick it up etc.

    4. Being able to white balance would also be nice
