Using the ATV 4K Wallpapers for a wonderful lock screen in Mojave! Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:15 AM PDT With the release of the MacOS 10.14 Beta, we're seeing all the little nuanced things we can do on the new version. Here is something I found out by mistake, but am very happy I found! In MacOS HS, I had the Apple TV 4K aerial wallpapers running as my screensavers (if you don't know what they look like, take a minute to scrub through this 2 hour long video and see them. Thanks to Lionel Frey for putting the different shots in the description for you to easily find). Now, with 10.14, the lock screen uses your wallpaper for the background, and in the event that the screen is awake long enough to run the screensaver, it will use your screensaver as well. The result is a beautifully alive lock screen, ready to go when you are. Moreover, the screensaver doesn't go away when you move the mouse or start typing your password, so you get to watch the shot as long as you like. Notes: I have not noticed a change in wake/start time. Resources: Aerial Wallpapers by JohnCoates on GitHub [link] [comments] |

ssh without password no longer working in 10.13 for some workstations? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:40 PM PDT I had ssh working great from machine to machine without password (using keys) and then suddenly I discovered that keys were not being accepted any longer from all workstations to a particular workstation while the others can still connect to each other just fine without passwords. They're all running 10.13. When I execute Any idea of what could be stopping keys from being accepted by this one system that would not be showing up via See verbose output for attempted and failed connection here. macOS & eGPU support experience / Sonnet Breakaway Puck 570 Posted: 30 Jun 2018 01:48 PM PDT Quick Overview of the puck in macOS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THYXGRYoh8o&t Purchasing an eGPU for macOS seems to have decent benefits, though gear such as Sonnet's Breakaway Puck are really only targeting the ultrabook segment of the market due to limitations and and was wondering how well the compact unit would function with a 2016 "Esc" TB3 model of MacBook Pro (16gb of RAM and Core i7-6660U). Overall the performance is decent, and surprisingly great for some things. However, something like the puck is very restrictive due to the overall cost (500-600) and non-upgradable components. If you are using Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere with a low power U series chip, along with Intel Iris Graphics, you're going to have a difficult time and it really isn't meant for that. However, an eGPU can greatly increase performance in this area in terms of playback and some rendering tasks. There are still some issues with the internal GPU being utilized for some rendering and transcoding with the eGPU staying dormant. However, someone pointed out that the command: defaults write -app "Final Cut Pro" GPUSelectionPolicy -string preferRemovable works to force usage of the external GPU during rendering, which seems to fix the issue with FCP 10.4.3 Gaming obviously is spartan in the Mac world though the unit is clearly utilized during testing which is nice. Overall it's great to see native support in macOS for eGPUs though it still seems like it's in infancy at this point. Haven't tested with bootcamp, though heard mixed things in terms of support drivers with TB3 cards. Also, if you are using an older device with TB2 or 1 there are ways around incompatibilities with scripts such as Purge-Wrangler. However, I haven't tested at this point: https://github.com/mayankk2308/purge-wrangler [link] [comments] |
My Mac takes a long time to wake from deep sleep Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:30 AM PDT As the title suggests, it can take five minutes or longer for my Mac to wake from what I call 'deep sleep'. I was wondering if there was a way to keep my Mac from going into deep sleep? When I put it to sleep it will wake normally up to an hour or so and then it will go into deep sleep. I thought it might have something to do with the option of putting the hard disks to sleep, but that hasn't changed anything. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Are m4a files restricted to one device or iCloud account? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:44 PM PDT I made a song on Logic but after exporting to iTunes and saving the media file I found that the file would only play on devices linked to my iCloud account. For example, the song plays on my Macbook but if I try to airdrop the file to my iMac (which is linked to a different iCloud account) the file won't play. Just wondering what the issue could be. Anything helps! [link] [comments] |
Window Management, specific use Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:02 PM PDT So I am starting to use window management on OSX as of late, trying to see what I like between Magnet, Spectacle and BetterSnapTool. What I would like to do though is have a browser window in my top corner and watch a video in 'fullscreen' if that makes sense. I know some video players allow to pop out, but for the ones that don't I would like to be able to watch the videos like that. Is this possible? EDIT: So OSX almost has what I am looking for with split view, where I can fullscreen and get black bars. I am looking for something that I can use just 25% of my screen real estate and fullscreen that way, black bars or not [link] [comments] |
Help Needed: Installing and Running High Sierra from External SSD Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:13 AM PDT Hi, I just bought a 500GB Samsung T5 external SSD so I can install and run MacOS from it. The problem is every time I run the installer and go through the initial steps (choosing the drive, waiting for the installer to reboot, etc), it reboots from the internal HDD instead of completing the new install on the SSD. The new drive just has a folder named "macOS Install Data" on it. I've tried several times with the HS installer from the App Store and have also tried installing from Recovery Mode. I've tried with the drive formatted as HFS+ and APFS. No matter what I try, the machine doesn't complete the install on the SSD and instead reboots from the HDD. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:47 AM PDT Kinda like how its implemented in youtube here and as I hover over 3:20 it shows up ahead of what I can view if I click at that moment. [link] [comments] |
One macOS feature Apple needs to push out ASAP Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:33 PM PDT The ability to remove any mention of the the Jenner/Kardashian families system-wide. Oh and also throw in any mention of Lebron James free agency. I mean, am I right? [link] [comments] |
