[Meta] protip: sort by new before you post the same article as 100 other people

I get that you want to be the first to post the hot news (Apple's throttling fix) but it takes 2 seconds to sort by 'new' and discover that, actually, someone else got there first.

EILI5-Why did Apple 5 years ago make a big splash about getting into gaming but now it seems worse than ever?

Wasn't the new Intel processors supposed to fix that like years ago? How are they missing out on all that revenue from gamers? I just dont get it.

Are people misunderstanding what Intel Turbo Boost is...?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2018 04:20 PM PDT

I've read a lot about the new processors and people expecting all 6 cores to run at the Turbo Boost speeds advertised, this isn't how this works. The processor can selectively provide more boost to individual cores on a sliding scale of MHz, but as per Intel's own website, the top line rated speed is only for single core performance.

    https://ark.intel.com/products/123613/Intel-Core-i9-7900X-X-series-Processor-13_75M-Cache-up-to-4_30-GHz

"Max turbo frequency is the maximum single core frequency at which the processor is capable of operating using Intel® Turbo Boost Technology. Frequency is measured in gigahertz (GHz), or billion cycles per second."

There's a good article about the 2013 Mac Pro that shows how some applications call for faster single core performance and others multi core, but the table handily shows how only one core can run flat out on TB whilst other cores essentially donate their speed to maintain fast single core speeds.

Ballad of a Well-Known Phone: the iPhone SE

    Posted: 24 Jul 2018 08:50 PM PDT

I'm in need of something new to replace my iPhone SE, and was thrilled with the rumors earlier this year that Apple would be devoting resources to developing an updated 4" phone. Now with speculation that the SE will instead be phased out and a new 4" iPhone will not be taking its place, what's a small phone lover to do?

I know the iPhone 8 and iPhone X aren't significantly larger than the SE in physical measurements, but they both cross the line that makes them functionally unusable for me as a one-handed phone (something I care about).

I'm considering buying a new SE with 128gb storage (my current is 64gb, bought right after they came out in March 2016), but my main hangups are these: 1. Whether the A9 processor can easily accommodate at least two more iOS releases and the accompanying strains that come along with them, and 2. Whether Apple will continue to push iOS updates to the SE after 2020.

    Thoughts? Anything I'm missing?

Those with a 13" 2018. How do you like it so far? Loud/Hot?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2018 09:59 AM PDT

Most threads here are about the 15" and thermal issues so I am interested in how you like your 13" 2018

I got mine today, 13" i5, and it seems to be noticeably louder/hotter than the dual core 2017 version but not as bad as my 2017 15" i7

Also noticed that if it goes to sleep while plugged in to an external display I have to reconnect otherwise it stays black, worked fine with the previous model

Everything we know so far about the new iPad Pro models coming this year

    Posted: 24 Jul 2018 03:46 PM PDT

    The little things.

    Posted: 24 Jul 2018 11:12 AM PDT

I've been a dedicated Mac guy for... I don't know... Near 30 years? But lately I've pooh poohed some of the latest Mac features...

Haptic feedback, touch ID, Touch Bar...

It'll take me a few years, but inevitably, I'll get a new model Apple product, and the new tech is bundled in... And... Those features turn out to be waaaaaayyy cooler than I thought.

In this case, haptic feedback sounded like a neat gimmick, but... But no, it makes the home button feel like a button, and since it's not a button, it doesn't get sticky, the internal components don't get exposed... It's a small thing, but it's better, so much better.

Touch ID... *shrug* I can do a password... Not that big a deal, I do it many times a day at work and at home... But you know what, a thumb as a password... shaves a second off, and just feels more fluid, it lowers the friction between me and what I want to do.

Touch Bar is the latest gimmick... Just got the new 2018 MBP... And surprisingly, this Touch Bar is quite useful. Context aware buttons is dope. Emojis at a fingertip, multiple browser tabs previewed on the bar, automatically fills out form information for me if I choose... Not the hugest thing, but again, just a little less friction between me and what I want to do.

Currently I'm pooh poohing animojis, and deliberately got an 8 instead of an X when they were released because I didn't see the need for that superfluous stuff... But if you told me that when animojis become standard across all phones, and I find I can't live without it... I guess I wouldn't be surprised anymore that Apple can still surprise me.

All 60 FPS videos in iOS YouTube app dropping frames when connected to Bluetooth audio?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2018 08:29 AM PDT

I have the latest YouTube app version on my iPhone 6s and iPad 2018. When I have my Sony Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth speaker connected to my iOS device all 60 FPS videos in the YouTube app start dropping frames. It says it's playing 1080p60 but it actually looks more like 40fps.

Can anyone reproduce this issue? Is this a bug within the YouTube app? This really needs to be addressed as it ruins the YouTube app experience.

iOS safari tip-open tabs in background

    Posted: 24 Jul 2018 02:27 PM PDT

I spent a long time finding it irritating how opening a link in a new tab in a safari would take you to that tab and I'd have to go manually go back, until I searched online and found it was a setting you could choose!

If you go to settings - safari - open links, you can select "in background", then links will open without taking you away from your current page.

Posting here in case anyone is still in the irritated stage I used to be in.

PSA: Apple's throttling bug fix doesn't seem to apply to Bootcamp

    Posted: 24 Jul 2018 03:12 PM PDT

After running Prime95 stress testing in Bootcamp, it looks like the throttling issue, that I can confirm was fixed in Mac, doesn't apply to Windows. I get Bootcamp speeds jumping between 4.3 and 0.8, while Mac speeds are acting more as expected, hovering around 4.3 under load.

I'm using the 2018 MacBook Pro with i9.

Beware of this. I'm wondering if Apple will update this later on.

Add your latest todo in Things to your Touch Bar; tap to complete

    Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:41 AM PDT

I'm increasingly convinced that the Touch Bar is best used as a persistent, ambient display for data / information (as opposed to an "interface" object).

In an effort to make it work for its place on the keyboard, here's a Gist to add your latest todo in things to the touch bar:

Touch Bar addition: Latest todo in Things

Copy the json from that gist. Add a new widget in BetterTouchTool, right click on the widget. Paste json and it should work.

Tap the todo in the touch bar to mark as completed and bring up next todo.
