India May Ban iPhones If Apple Continues To Refuse To Add The Do Not Disturb App To The App Store

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 07:41 AM PDT

Useful tip for anyone who has a friend or family member who starts recording video vertically before rotating their phone resulting in one of those horrendous sideways-vertical video monstrosities...

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 10:28 AM PDT

...I hope the title makes sense.

My mum does this all the time and, because iOS doesn't allow you to change the orientation of a video in the stock photos app (I'm not sure why, it lets you do it for photos...), the way I've fixed this in the past is to open iMovie, create a new movie, import the video I want to fix, change the orientation using the 'twist' gesture, export the video to camera roll.

This works fine but it takes a while and you end up with a new video which goes to the bottom of your camera roll meaning it's out of sequence plus you have to delete the old video manually, not ideal.

Anyway, I figured out today that you can just edit the video in the stock photos app, click the 'more' button and select iMovie from the options. This opens the iMovie 'extension' (still in the photos app) allowing you to use the 'twist' gesture and save. That's it. The video is rotated and saved right back where it was. No new video is created and there's no need to delete the old one either. Really straightforward.

I'll guess a number of you probably know about this or some other way but for those that don't, it's quite handy if you find yourself in a similar position to what I often do.

Anyone else constantly finding themselves pushing the left side of this bar on their phone when they want to see their library? Or the other way around on their Mac? I don't know how this inconsistency got past Apple.

Samsung’s new ad critiquing iPhone X

Ongoing app project. My attempt to create a delightful way to deal with litter and loose plastic waste.

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 06:01 PM PDT

    Self Promotion Saturday

tldr; I created a Rubbish App that allows you to track how much litter you've picked up or came across on your street. I focused a lot on ui/ux.

    Background

The past couple of years I've gotten a little obsessed with litter and plastic waste. I've devoted a lot of time to thinking of ways I can use my skillset (iOS developer) to help with the problem.

I think the first step is getting communities engaged and giving people an easy (maybe even fun way) to call out the problem in their neighborhood. That's why a couple of friends and I got together and created an app.

In June, we choose a test neighborhood in San Francisco and tracked every single piece of litter we came across, for a couple of days. We're still writing up our findings, but here is a snippet of a study about the surprisingly large increase in litter after the Fourth of July.

We're adding features like displaying a log of photos, adding friends, 311 integration, and more detailed statistics. Here is an example of some of the neighborhood statistics we want to share with everyone. (I was surprised to find how many people complained about FB only sign in. That's been fixed now.)

Feedback on the app or what features you would like to see would be appreciated - Thanks!

    Questions

    • How do you like the UI?
    • Did you like the cartoon characters that were associated with each type of trash?
    • Would you use an app like this?
    • What feature would you like to see most?
    • Does litter in your neighborhood bother you?

Feel free to answer all or none!

Numberer - macOS app to add page numbers easily to your PDF files

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 08:37 PM PDT

Hi /r/apple! This is my first Mac app (I developed multiple iOS apps previously).

I created this app out of frustration that the Markdown Editor I used to write ebook does not support page numbering when exporting to PDF. I don't feel it's worth to subscribe to Adobe Acrobat or buying a complete PDF suite just for page numbering.

I've also found many online service providing page numbering function for free but I am paranoid on what if they store the uploaded PDF and make it publicly available on some sketchy ebook downloading site? 🤔😱 (Some of them don't even have terms of service, might be just me being too paranoid)

I hope this app is useful for you! Critiques are well appreciated!

95% of my computing work can be done on my iPad Pro.

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 03:18 AM PDT

It's just that annoying 5% that's really frustrating. I'm studying Maths and Physics at university, and they require access to Matlab and RStudio.

Apart from that, I've been sailing along nicely using just my iPad. All my reports are done in Word or Pages, I hand write all my notes in Notability, and I organise all my assignments and documents in PDF Expert.

With all the hoohah regarding the MacBook Pro throttling going on, it's made me appreciate how utterly fantastic the iPad is. I just wish I could use it for everything.

Who else is in a similar boat? I'd be interested to hear some other stories/perspectives.

    EDIT:

I just wanted to clarify my situation to provide a little context.

I am indeed a first year student like someone wondered below, so I fully realise that my workflow is going to be much different as I progress.

This whole "iPad-as-main-computer" thing is actually a bit of a personal experiment. About a year ago, my MacBook Pro was stolen, and I didn't have the money to replace it at the time. It happened to coincide with Apple really kicking off their iPad campaign, so I decided to give it a go.

Now I obviously know my daily usage is very, very different to many of you down below. I seem to have ruffled a few feathers; I'm not so naïve to assume that my approach will work for proper professionals. But that's not the audience the iPad Pro is aimed at, I think.

However it suits me at the moment, and probably many other people who have simple workflows that can easily change and adapt and don't need to adhere to certain programs.

I will be getting a Mac in the near future anyway, as I plan to change my Physics major to Computer Science, which naturally requires a proper computer.

    Thanks for all your replies.

    2 HomePods are amazing!

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 11:54 AM PDT

1 HomePod is great. 2 HomePods are earth-shattering. Each HomePod contains multiple speakers so they are each independently in stereo. You get stereo from both sides (and no matter where you move in the room). But here's the kicker: the left and right sides still get what the artist intended to send to the left and right channels separately. So we still get the artist's true recording with left/right separation while simultaneously getting stereo sound from both sides (all around you). This technology is astounding.

Apple should never have released the HomePod before AirPlay2 and the ability to pair. Except because I bought 1 HomePod at first, and thought that sounded great, I now know how phenomenal a jump it is from 1 HomePod to 2. If you have disposable income, get 2 HomePods now!

Temperature scaling, thermals, and light at the end of the tunnel

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 10:06 AM PDT

My apologies in advance for the length and probably somewhat rambling nature of this post. Over the last few days, one of the questions that had been bugging me was why the i9 in the 15" Pro was throttling to speeds lower than the i7, and likewise, why the 13" Pro's 28W Coffee Lake chips were being outclassed by 15W Kaby Lake R chips. I don't claim to be the ultimate source on this matter, but I have some background in the topic, and I'd like to share my thoughts on why this is happening, and what Apple (or users) can do to fix it without a redesign.

First I want to get a few basics established:

    1) This equation. Burn it into your memory because it explains almost every power-related CPU problem that you'll see. Of particular importance to this discussion is the CPU Dynamic Power, which is proportional to the clock speed (GHz) times the square of the core voltage (Vcc). This has consequences that I'll break down below.

    2) In a (somewhat idealized) steady state, thermally constrained package, power consumption is steady at the max rate the cooling system will dissipate, and thus performance and efficiency are effectively equivalent.

Now that that's done, I'll start with the i9. The first and most important thing to understanding this CPU's odd performance behavior is that there is no such thing as a dedicated laptop CPU. For a given die, chips role out of the fab together, are tested together (basic wafer probing type stuff), then are packaged into different form factors (BGA mobile chips, LGA desktop ones) and shipped off to the customer. Right now, it's actually debatable whether Intel does any large-scale binning at all. It's possible that your i7-8700K desktop chip is better silicon than your pricey i9-8950HK.

So, why is this important? For that, we need to look at the situation from the perspective of the CPU itself, within Apple's setting. You see, unlike many OEMs, Apple does not cap the power consumption of the chip, and instead keeps it in line by thermal throttling (using this as a general term to cover boost behavior as well). The chip does not know it's in a laptop. It does not know know that its performance is limited by its efficiency. So what does it do? Why, it behaves like a desktop chip. And what would happen if you had a desktop chip with a 4.8GHz turbo, higher even than the 8700k? Well, the CPU will be like "screw the base clocks, I'm gunning for glory!"

So you remember that equation I linked above, and especially the [clock speed]*[voltage]2 dependency? That's where the headache begins. See this graph? That's a pretty representative example of typical CPU clock and voltage scaling, courtesy of The Stilt's amazing Ryzen deep dive. Now, you see that nice linear region in the middle? That's the CPU's optimal operation zone, where clock speed (and thus performance) scales more or less linearly with voltage. So, with power ∝ clocks * voltage2, and clocks ∝ voltage, we get P ∝ [clock speed]3, or in other words, a cubic scaling of power consumption with performance. And you wonder why mobile chips seem to get pretty close to their desktop counterparts?

Here's the problem, though. When the i9 is in the mid 4GHz range, it's not operating in that nice linear region. So, instead of cubic scaling between performance and power consumption, it's more like quartic, quintic, or even worse scaling.

Just to illustrate what this means, with P ∝ V4, 10% more performance costs you (1.1)4 = 1.46 => 46% more power. If it's to the fifth, then that 10% performance will cost you 61% more power. Your overall performance vs power graph will look something like this, and the consequences in a power/thermally constrained form factor should be obvious. The CPU blows through its thermal headroom for marginally more speed, then has to spend a lot of time at lower clocks to compensate, resulting in lower overall performance. This is why power limiting the 13" Pro has produced such impressive results, and the 15" would likely show a similar improvement. That impressive boost clock on the i9 is a poisoned chalice, and Apple would do better to pretend it doesn't exist.

There's also another small matter I'd like to mention. Apple's default fan curves have the CPU run, more or less, at 80-100C at any load. This has the advantage of reducing fan noise and improving the efficiency of the cooling system, but temperature alone has an impact on power consumption. In reality, I suspect this contribution is fairly negligible, but might contribute to the benefits of a more aggressive fan profile.

Alright, so this post ended up being just as long and rambling as I feared, but frankly, I don't care enough to clean it up. Make of my observations what you will.

TLDR: Possible improvements from power limiting and more aggressive fan curves, lots of inane discussion on CPU thermal behavior.

Edit: /u/Aea very helpfully ran some tests, the results of which you can see on his/her post: https://redd.it/90u9mt. TLDR:

The data is somewhat surprising, I'm seeing an immediate boost in performance simply by power limiting the CPU to 45W (the advertised TDP).

    Edit 2, ELI5 version:

CPU thinks it's in a desktop, hurts itself in its confusion.

What was your first Apple product and what drew you towards purchasing it?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 11:33 PM PDT

So for me, it was the 1st gen nano.

I had had a few different flash-based MP3 players before the nano and they were all so terrible. They all had ~256MB of storage and their user interfaces sucked.

A friend of mine at school had an iPod mini which I coveted so much, I loved the click wheel, the - relatively at the time - huge screen, the 4GB storage size.

It took a while for me to save to purchase a mini, by which point it was discontinued and replaced with the nano.

I had a dilemma at the time; get a mini which was becoming cheaper as stores wanted to get rid of their stock or get a nano which looked to be the future of small MP3 players.

The nano, in many ways, reminds me of the iPhone X, it completely rewrote what came before it and its changes enabled a new era for the iPod line.

Thanks for reading my story! Please share your own first Apple products in the comments.

I own a airport express and was wondering about the second Ethernet port on the back

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 06:46 PM PDT

On my airport express there is 2 Ethernet ports one is connected to my router and I was wondering if I could connect the Ethernet port to another device to use Ethernet with. I already have one of the Ethernet ports in my router connected to my Apple TV and the other port connected to my Airport I have another device that also needs Ethernet. Is this possible?

How to default your Airpods to your Apple Watch when answering on it?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2018 01:52 AM PDT

So when someone calls me I pop my Airpods in and wait for the notification that they are connected and hit answer on my Apple Watch. But then I have to swipe up and choose my Airpods which in total take a bit of time. Is there any setting that let me auto default to the Airpods with my Watch whenever I accept a call on my Watch?

After 3 months of work I released a new arcade game, my goal was to make pixelart look as good as possible. Features a working day/night and weather system!

    Posted: 21 Jul 2018 04:47 AM PDT

I just released a new platformer for iOS called "Infinite Islands" any feedback is greatly appreciated. This is my first attempt at working with lots of hand made pixel art scenes, let me know what you think and where they can be improved. This game is free to play and does not have any "freemium" microtransactions; there is an ingame store for new app icons / themes (only app icons for this version, more themes are in the works!). The items in the store are able to be unlocked with gems you collect by playing the game, not by spending money. This game has a dynamically updating day/night system, a weather system and other various things that fly across the screen. All of the art was done by myself in the late hours of the night fueled by lots of coffee.

If you have any questions on how I built this or need any tips/guides on getting started building your own games/apps let me know!

Upcoming features include full iPad support (not the terrible shrunken version the game currently has), more themes, more levels and various weather types (snow, ice, hurricanes, etc.)
