Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:44 AM PDT Per Apple, if you have forgotten the passcode necessary to log in to your iPad, you must connect the device to a computer running iTunes. https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht204306
This seems like a rather significant oversight on Apple's part, particularly when the company has recommended the iPad as a replacement for a computer. For example: Assume you are on a business trip, and bring your iPad with you. You stay in a hotel that has Wi-Fi, but you've never connected to it before. You recently changed your passcode to log in on your iPad, but have forgotten it. Without access to a computer, there is nothing you can do. Working in an environment where I work with iPads daily, imagine how ridiculous it must seem to have to explain to someone that they have to have access to a computer to reset a forgotten passcode. It's insane to me that this capability isn't available without the need for a computer. EDIT: I know erasing via Find My iPad exists, but for it to work, you have to have a Wi-Fi connection, which may not be an option if you can't unlock the iPad to connect. Additionally, this is not what Apple recommends. EDIT 2: I think the best solution would be the ability for the iPad to remotely boot to an Internet-based version of iOS, like macOS Internet Recovery mode. This would enable the ability to restore an iPad without access to a computer. See this screenshot for an example of what this looks like on macOS. EDIT 3: It doesn't have to be limited to passcode issues. For instance, on the Mac, if macOS is experiencing an issue, you can reinstall macOS from the recovery partition OR via Apple's Internet Recovery servers. On iOS, however, if you need to reinstall the software, you have to connect to a computer and do so via iTunes. Wouldn't it be nice if iOS had the same Internet Recovery functionality as macOS so you could troubleshoot your device without the need to have to use a computer? Particularly when Apple is positioning the iPad as a device to replace computers? [link] [comments] |
Free Stanford course on iOS development Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:35 PM PDT https://web.stanford.edu/class/cs193p/cgi-bin/drupal/ This is great for people who already know the fundamentals of programming and want to learn iOS development. Craig Federighi also recommended it in an interview a few years ago. [link] [comments] |
Anyone else who wishes that Apple would make a 4.7 iPhone with no bezels? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:05 AM PDT I have my iPhone 7 and I love the screen size and aspect ratio. However it seems like the market is moving towards making bigger, taller phones and I want to know if I am alone in wanting a more compact iPhone? A 4.7 inch iPhone with no bezels would be amazing I think. [link] [comments] |
Anyone else frustrated with current Apple computer offerings? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:16 PM PDT I just feel like, after being a power user for as long as I can remember, justifying the price for a 256GB hard drive, 8GB of ram, etc is out of control. I LOVE my iPhone, I LOVE Apple TV, I LOVE family sharing, I love the whole eco system, but the computing piece either needs to keep up tech wise to warrant the price or drop the price...anyone else having a harder and harder find justifying the computer cost? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:40 PM PDT Hi Guys! I have been working on this concept to imagine integrate Touch Bar with iOS Keyboard. These are some of the examples of how it works. • Writing emails: https://i.imgur.com/ynpvgq2.gifv • Typing content: https://i.imgur.com/ILh3mci.gifv More examples are in the GitHub page for the project: https://github.com/EMUR/AccessoryTouchBar Please let me know if you have any suggestions or comments :) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:00 PM PDT I'm sure this has been asked before (sorry), but is anyone aware of a receiver for AirPlay 2 that can just be plugged into existing speakers? [link] [comments] |
Why iOS will never replace my Mac Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:28 AM PDT So a friend gave me an audiobook in mp3 format that I wanted to listen to on my iPhone/iPad. Fine I thought, I'll just upload it to iCloud drive and play it in iBooks (Music has no progress, this audiobook is 12 hours) OK, iBooks can't open the mp3 files from iCloud Drive. Fair enough. I'm used to weird random limitations on Apple software. Apparently you can sync audiobooks via iTunes. OK, drag mp3 files into iTunes on my Mac, connect my iPhone via USB-A to USB-C dongle, done. Not quite, my iPhone is already synced with my other MacBook, so it will delete my whole music library. No-go. OK, plan B, let's try some audiobook apps from the App Store. Download 4 of them that could to iCloud Drive sync. 1 app kept displaying ads I couldn't close, next. Another app could only transfer a single file via iCloud drive at a time, and the transfer was via Internet, so it was really slow (400 MB audiobook in total) Another app provided an in-app web server I could connect to via my MacBook, tried that. Could also only handle 1 file at a time, no go. After 1 file, it would disconnect. Another app also had a web server, and accepted a zip file, so I had to compress the files and upload them. But the tracks were in the wrong order. Fuck that, don't want to drag 40 files around. I want to listen NOW. Few more free apps had similar problems... In the end, I gave in and bought Bound for $4 (45 DKK), which worked, supported transferring multiple files at a time from iCloud drive and sorting worked. All in all, about 45 minutes of effort and $4 spent just to listen to a SINGLE AUDIOBOOK and I'm ready to throw my iPhone at the fucking wall right now. And I work as a software engineer! If I gave my mom a USB stick with an audiobook and tell her to play it on her iPhone, she would never, ever make it. [link] [comments] |
Would you rather see the Mac become more like the iPad, or the iPad become more like the Mac? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:43 PM PDT It seems like they are certainly on a collision course. 10 years from now do you want to be holding a iPad with a lot more productivity features, or a Mac with a arm processor and access to the vast trove of iOS apps? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:57 PM PDT So I've had a MacBook since 2012. I upgraded to the new model last year and I absolutely love it. I use it for school as well as browsing and watching tv sometimes and it's worked perfectly so far. However, lately I've been thinking about getting into pc gaming. My brother has a pc and I love playing on it so I'm considering selling my MBP and buying a gaming laptop. The reason I'd go with a laptop is because I don't have much room for a desktop and I'd still need the portability of a laptop for my last semester at school. My question is, those who have made that switch, was it worth it? If so, any advice? Thanks [link] [comments] |
How to accelerate apps with an eGPU on your Mac's internal display [Video] Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:33 AM PDT |
Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:11 PM PDT I do live events for my job and recently had to output to two displays (one out Thunderbolt 2 and the other out HDMI). We have a 2015 MacBook Pro that we bought new last year and during the event the laptop would say "battery not charging" when plugged in, and the power would drop tiny increments at a time. I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM. The battery only has like 36 cycles on it and it came with the 85W charger. Any idea on how to fix this or are we SOL? [link] [comments] |
Extracting audio from a YouTube video and using it as my voicemail? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:05 AM PDT Is there a way to be able to use the audio from this video as my voicemail greeting? I know I can extract it using a website that does this but I'm wondering if I add it to my Apple Music list if I can set it without losing quality. If I have to I'll record it via a computer but I really don't want to. [link] [comments] |
Anyone have experience with Barclay financing for Apple products? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:03 PM PDT I'm considering purchasing a Macbook pro with financing using the 0 interest offer through the Barclay card offered on Apple.com. Does anyone have experience with this? Is it easy to pay through their portal, set up automated payments, etc. Any advice from people who have prior experience with that would be appreciated [link] [comments] |
Does the hot-corner "put display to sleep" actually puts the whole Mac to sleep? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:15 AM PDT I'm trying to understand what the "Hot Corners" action "Put Display to Sleep" does. I see the screen turns black (is turned off), but is it triggering the same action I can trigger when I go to > Sleep or is it different? I can't find much info online. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Anyone know how to hide the "in-app links" in the Apple TV Youtube app? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:48 PM PDT So I was showing my wife the animated Ra Ra Rasputin video on youtube, and when it gets to the end of the video (while its still playing) this giant popup appears in the middle of the screen of some blue guy, a suggestion of the next video to watch. Nothing I pressed would make this guy go away, and since it took up most of the screen we simply had to abandon the last 20 seconds of the vid. I turned off "Autoplay" in settings, but that wasn't it. When it comes up on the screen, it has at the bottom of the screen an up arrow with "In-app links". If you swipe up on the controller, it pauses the video and replaces that text with a down arrow to resume the vid. I'm stumped. I would like to be able to watch entire youtube videos on my apple TV without having to stop 20 seconds shy because of giant popups, but I can't find the right setting to make it stop. Anyone have any ideas? [link] [comments] |

Benefit of having Apple TV/MacBook Pro/iPhone X? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:12 AM PDT I was wondering what's the benefit of this combination? As I was considering getting a MacBook Pro but I was put off by the specs so I'm considering getting a dell xps 9370 until the next refresh. I already have a Apple TV 4k and iPhone X [link] [comments] |
Getting a replacement Macbook Pro 2017 at the Genius Bar? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:52 PM PDT I have a 13' 2017 MBP and it's recently been driving me insane. It constantly makes popping noises, the fan gets extremely loud when I'm just web browsing, and occasionally when I open it the display is all static for a few seconds. However, I can't send in my laptop for repair because I'm taking a summer class which is very computer-dependent (I'm a college student). Is there any way to go into the Genius Bar and just get a replacement MBP, considering that I need my laptop for school and can't have it being away for repair? edit: forgot to mention that a few years ago I had an issue with my 2015 MBP and at first they wouldn't do anything about it, but after prodding they ended up giving me a replacement [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:36 AM PDT I live in India and travel daily via the local train. It gets quite crowded and I have to take my MBP to school. Carrying it simply in a bag is not feasible. Is it good to take a hardshell case? Since it'll cover the MacBook and protect it from all lossibke scratches? My only drawback against the cases are that they damage screen hinges + cause heating. Either that or just take it in a laptop sleeve with some padding? [link] [comments] |
