Two examples of potential questions could be; "How do I learn to code an app?", or "How is app pricing determined?"

Developers, please include as much information about your app as possible, including size, price, release info, and anything else people request.

Finally, please stick to reddiquette and keep your comments on topic and substantive. Thanks for participating.

Can confirm the Pitaka Carbon Fiber case for iPhone X is dope

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:40 AM PDT

Currently own ~20 cases for the iPhone X ranging from ultra thin to shock proof. Apart from the Mous line of cases for shock cases the pitaka case is definitely the best ultra thin I've seen and felt (that silky real carbon fibre)

Sidegraded iPhone 6S to SE - sharing my impressions

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:58 AM PDT

Recently sidegraded to the SE from a 2 year old 6s (no throttling). Wanted to share my experiences for anyone else considering picking up an SE in 2018.

    Build

    • The iPhone 5 design is one of my favourites
    • It's really light - one of the main reasons I wanted to switch
    • It's not as well built as the 6s and onwards. There are a lot of seams and edges, meaning there's a lot more room for error. You can see very tiny gaps and unevenness where different parts meet. Not important if you use a case.
    • The SE doesn't have the shiny polished chamfered edges - they just look like the normal aluminium. Looked more premium with the fancy edges.
    • It's not as friendly to use as the 6s design. Rounded edges on the 6 design omward makes it much nicer to hold and use (swiping from left/right off screen). The 5 design digs into your hand as you hold it.

    Display & Screen Size

    • I believe the contrast and black levels are worse on the SE, and I can definitely tell that it's not as nice as my 6s screen. Not too bad, but noticeable.
    • There's also very minor light bleed along some edges - much more than my 6s, but not a big deal.
    • iOS 11 control centre is awful on this display size. If you're playing a podcast, the touch targets for rewind / play / skip so close together that it's almost impossible to accurately hit what you want. iOS 10 handled this way better (even if it used separate menus in control centre).
    • Most apps handle this screen resolution fine. Some apps will show less information (eg 3x3 instead of 4x4 grid for a dropdown).
    • Reddit comment threads become narrow real quick. It's a bit more scrolling but it's fine.
    • One handed use is much better. With the 6s, I'd have to reach, but this size is a dream for one handed use.

    Other stuff

    • gen1 Touch ID is slow. Not sure if it's an iOS thing or what, but there are times where I have to lift my finger off and try again. This didn't happen on my 5s so I'm not sure what's happening there.
    • No 3D Touch. A little bit annoying - interacting with lock screen notifications needs a slide press ("view"), no keyboard cursor.
    • No Taptic. Vibrations are loud and obnoxious. Good for alarms, bad for everything else.
    • Speaker is significantly worse.

    Final thoughts

I'm not in love with it, but I don't hate it. It's light, small, has great battery life, and it's comfortable to use one handed.

If anyone else is looking to make a similar jump, I'd say go for it if you can get a good deal on an SE and you value the one handed usability a huge amount. Otherwise, I'd just get accustomed to the larger size with the X or 8. I don't think Apple's going to spend much time making the touch targets nicer for the SE size, and I don't think an SE update is coming anytime soon.

There's a lot of nitpicking in my post but I'm satisfied with my SE. It's adorably small.

[Question] Worth buying the X considering the upcoming new IPhones?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:26 AM PDT

    Hello.

I am considering to buy the IPhone X, but i dont know if i should wait for the upcoming new IPhones? I'm slowly getting tired of my current IPhone SE, so i think it's time to get a new one.

Do you think the upgrade is worth it or should i wait?

Purchasing new iPhone (+ prepaid plan)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:57 AM PDT

I'm looking to purchase a new iPhone and change carrier from Verizon. I'm interested in an iPhone 8 and would prefer a lightweight, prepaid plan. Are there any good options? Also, are any new iPhone deals being run for switching carriers?

I’ve bought the wrong iCloud storage option and I want to change it.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 08:18 PM PDT

I was on the 5 Gb iCloud option and got bored from the constant messages of iPad/iPhone not backed up so I saw the other options and bought the 50 Gb option.

At first I thought having the 50 Gb would help, but the iPad came at about 20.6 Gb and the iPhone 10.1 Gb, leaving me with ~19.3 Gb for documents. I want to change it to the 200 Gb option, but I already paid. Should I wait until the end of the month when it renews to change it? Or can I change it now and only pay the difference?

    Thanks in advance!

Help retrieving iMessages sent to an email address instead of my phone number?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 06:46 AM PDT

A few days ago I updated my phone and after the update I was going about my normal business messaging people and a few people called me and asked why I was sending messages from my email. I went into the setting and changed my iMessage settings to "start new conversations from my phone number" instead of my email and everything now appears to be solved.

The problem is that I know several people have continued to send messages to my email and there was about a two day period where I had turned off the setting to be able to receive iMessages on my email. Is there a way to recover these messages that were sent to my email?

FaceTime blocked on iPhone but works on MacBook Pro

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 04:30 AM PDT

The UAE has blocked FaceTime and VPN's. So FaceTime doesn't work from my iPhone or iPad but for some reason it works on my MacBook Pro.

Any idea why? I have not changed any wifi or DNS settings my MBP just worked literally out of the box.

Would love to still be able to communicate with my family if I could work out how I get the iPhone working like the MacBook.

    iPhone 7 plus microphone broken?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:39 AM PDT

I had an iPhone 6s plus. I accidentally went into water with it. Warranty from Verizon wouldn't cover it. I've had a new phone for almost a year (and I still owe $281 for the 6s plus.)

The new phone, a 7 plus which I've had for around 10 months has a broken microphone. If I try doing a voice memo, make a call, or record a video all I hear is extremely loud static

Question - why is my voicemail automatically marking read messages as read?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:36 AM PDT

I received and listened to a voicemail yesterday, today my phone showed me I had a new message after I received a call. The message was the one from yesterday. Anyone else have this issue?

iPhone 8 Plus had haptic feedback but black screen

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:03 AM PDT

6 hours ago my 8 Plus' screen refused to turn on in spite of the home button vibrating everytime I press on it.

I tried turning off the iPhone with a long press on the power button but after doing that the home button still vibrates.

I asked someone to make a cellular call to my 8 Plus and the call got through and they heard my phone ring. On my phone it neither rang nor the screen lit up.

My 8 Plus started getting warm until it ran out of battery. I know the battery ran out as the home button stopped vibrating when pressed.

Now I tried charging using three different chargers and four different lighting cables. No charging indicator was displayed. I tested all chargers and cables with an iPad Air and iPhone 7 Plus and they charged.

I left my iPhone charging for 30 mins and still no power.

I tried plugging the iPhone into a Windows PC and Mac and both computers did not detect it.

I tried pressing the volume down and power button. Still doesn't turn on.

I am sad, I wasn't able to backup in months. :(

What else could I do short of sending it a service center for repair?

The iPhone has never been dropped without its Spigen case. And the last time I knowingly dropped it was yesterday but it still worked afterwards.

There is no indication of broken glass on either the front or back of the phone.

    This is running iOS 11.4.

Been using my work iPhone 7 for a full month, since my Pixel phone broke. Some QoL questions.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:51 AM PDT

Hey, I have been semi-familiar with how to use my iPhone 7, but with my Google Pixel's motherboard dying, I was forced to use my iPhone as a daily driver. I like the experience overall, but had some questions that probably have answers to them...

As a frequent gym goer, I like having my music and clock app (stopwatch) being used constantly...but they also seem to irk me compared to how Android handles it...

    1. For Spotify, if I pause the music and don't restart it after 10-15 seconds, the widget disappears from the lock screen. Why is that? Android will have it sit there for quite a while.

    2. When I use the stopwatch functionality while doing an exercise and the screen goes dark, why is that it won't show the type if I simply tap my home button on the lock screen? I have to unlock my phone to see where the timer is at? I can only imagine how annoying this would be with someone who has a X and uses Face ID.

    Some other things I've noticed...

    1. Is there no way to open the youtube app when clicking on a link through the browser or other apps? I keep my screen's orientation locked, but the youtube app has a button to switch it to horizontal if necessary. I don't see that with the video player that loads in an iPhone?

    2. Is there a way to get a more yellow/ambient screen at night? If I have to check my phone at night, it burns my eyes even at low bright settings.

    3. Can I not view images straight from the Gmail App? My sister sent an attachment for a receipt. It showed up as a small image in the email, but the only way I could actually view it was if I saved the image and then opened it? This might be Google's fault, but just wondering.

    4. Apple Maps shows up directly on your lock screen if your screen goes off, but you can't do that with Google Maps? Workaround?

    Thank you everyone!

Notification sounds playing over Bluetooth headphones?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 06:13 AM PDT

    IPhone 6S IOs 11.4

My peoblem is the notification sounds going through my Bluetooth headphones and not the phone. If I'm listening to music on my phone, I don't want a screaming notification sound in my ear. Why doesn't the phone play the notifications through the phone and not my headset. All sounds come from the headphones and the phone is silent. Only when my headphones are connected. Is there a way to force the notifications to the phone so it stops blowing out my ear drums? This is super annoying and I cannot listen to music with it because of this issue.

I don't want the phone silenced or put on vibrate because I would miss calls and texts. It's a work phone and I work construction.

I have a question to you guys: Do anyone of you use Jailbroken iPhones?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:55 AM PDT

This may be an odd question because Apple strongly advices against Jailbreaking, but there are a lot of good things about jailbreaking. So I am just curious if any of you guys are Jailbroken.

    iPhone limitations hardware or software?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:12 AM PDT

Sorry if this has been asked, I couldn't find it by searching. But I was curious if the limitations Apple places are hardware locks or not?

As a little more context, I remember having super long exposure times in camera apps like ProCam but more recently longer exposure has disappeared, when I asked the dev they said it was Apple placing limitations on those APIs.

So for example, if it's software limitations, then technically with a jailbreak we would be able to record video at 720p @ 300fps? Or have longer exposure time etc.

Or is it hardware? In which case, there's nothing to be done.
