PSA: If you’re debating buying a Mac right now, B&H Photo will start charging tax soon

B&H Photo is notorious for not charging tax on outside-of-NY sales. This can save hundreds of dollars for a Mac purchase.

Well today a Supreme Court ruling overturned the 1992 case that made this possible. Now states can force companies to collect sales tax, ending this great benefit. Buy soon if you were about to pull the trigger.

Advice purchasing a MBP for compsci in college?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2018 08:07 PM PDT

I'll be entering my freshman year at Syracuse this fall and have always been an apple fan. I've been waiting a month or so to hear about the new 2018 mac, and WWDC was a huge letdown(hardware side of things :(, software looks exciting). I plan on doing something in compsci/finance in college and would like to get a 15 inch MBP.

I have money with me that I've been saving up and got a generous amount as a graduation gift. These are the specs of the MBP that I'm planning on purchasing:

    15 inch, space grey

    3.1 GHz($180 upgrade from standard)

    1TB SSD($360 upgrade from standard)

And the Pro apps bundle(plan to take music production classes)

    final cost: $3,338.99 , after taxes: $3,547.68

However, I am hesiatant because of the keyboard issues and not sure if they will come out with the newest Kolbylake this year. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

Microsoft Office v16.14.1 forcing GPU on MacBook Pro 2017 15 inch 10.13.5

    Posted: 21 Jun 2018 05:06 PM PDT

Is anyone experiencing an issue with Microsoft Office forcing the dedicated GPU to turn on? I'm experiencing this on my 2017 MacBook Pro on High Sierra. I've tried reinstalling Microsoft Office but it is still forcing the GPU when I open any of the Microsoft Office apps (ie Word). What's weird is my friend is not experiencing this issue with the exact same Mac and version of Microsoft Office. Anyone else with this problem?

Does leaving your MacBook plugged in all the time hurt the battery?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2018 04:09 PM PDT

I have a 2017 macbook pro 15 inch that I essentially use like a desktop. Constantly plugged in because it is connected to an external monitor.

I do occasionally use it as a laptop, but for the most part it's a desktop replacement.

Will this cause issues with the battery moving forward, or is this fine? Thank you!

Older quad core or newer dual core for Photoshop/Lightroom?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2018 12:53 PM PDT

I'm getting a new Macbook Pro for work and my budget is $2,000. Which of these will run Photoshop/Lightroom better?

    1. 13" 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 Dual-Core 16GB of 2133 MHz RAM | 256GB PCIe SSD
    2. 15" 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 (Crystalwell) 16GB of Onboard 1600 MHz DDR3L RAM 256GB PCIe-Based Flash Storage
    3. Any other model I've overlooked?

Touchbar intermittently Doesn't boot up right away

    Posted: 21 Jun 2018 10:35 AM PDT

As I look up this problem, I only find forums where the touchbar or whole computer fails to boot at all.

The issue that I have, is sometimes on boot, the touchbar doesn't boot up right away. But eventually, I look and notice that it is on. Say 10 minutes after boot. Sometimes it does boot properly with the whole computer. Trying to force a touchbar restart in terminal doesn't help.

Anyone else have this weird issue? It sucks not having an escape key while the tb is not up. And it's annoying to have to go to system prefs for the other controls such as volume and screen brightness, not to mention any app controlls in the tb. Interestingly enough, I use bootcamp to game occasionally, and I never have had a problem with the touchbar in windows mode.

How to use ctrl & left/right arrow keys at the same time

    Posted: 21 Jun 2018 03:05 AM PDT

    Hi!

I'm trying to use ctrl and arrow keys for a game I play where ctrl = jump and arrow keys = move around (used karabiner to change ctrl to right option, but thats beside the point). I can't jump and move at the same time, and there are some other parts of the game where it's a really big problem. I can't play the game effectively because I can't use ctrl and the arrow keys at the same time. Does anyone know if it would be possible for me to use both at the same time? I also disabled pretty much every keyboard/touchpad gesture because they're annoying and interfere more than anything.

    Edit: Macbook Air, 2017
