    Buying MacBook 12" early 2015 in 2018?

    1.1 GHz Intel Core M 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 256 GB

I am a college in IT. Next semester I will learn SQL/databases. I plan to install VM Linux (desire to learn), and also upgrade OS X Yosemite to Mojave when it is released this fall. It is being sold locally for $590. I've been eyeing 2017 MacBook or 2017 MacBook Pro 13" nTB, and I wonder if the savings is worth it to get an older 2015 MB model. I'm worried if something happens, I wished I splurged on $1000+ new models, although my gut is telling me the seller is trustworthy.

    Should I buy a 2015 13” rMCB or a 2015 15” rMCB?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 11:29 PM PDT

I have to do some video work (1080p on Premiere Pro and 4k on FCPX) and I can't wait until october for apple to release their new Macbook pros. So I'm looking into buying a used retina one from 2015 (I like all the ports and the keyboards). Do you think that the 13inch one will suite the deal? I'll work with proxies. Is the graphics card in the 15" one extremelly necessary?

Macbook 13' Mid-2012 Grey Screen on boot

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 09:38 PM PDT

Hey guys! I Got myself a "new" Macbook and i'm having some issues with it.

    Before the Problem:

    • The macbook was running os X 10.7.5 (Lion) and was working properly
    • Dead battery, even recognized in the OS like a dead battery that needs service.
    • No dust or sign of overheating (did a full internal checkup before my purchase).

The source from which i got the Mac didn't had time to delete all the user data in the Mac, so i wanted to do a full reinstall of the software and at the same time, an update to a newer OS (10.12 - Sierra).I booted up the computer in recovery mode, went into disk utility, and wiped the disk clean. My next move was to boot on my USB device for installing sierra.Thing is, i inserted the wrong USB key and ended up booting in my hackintosh installer for sierra i did for another project. I restarted the computer and since then, when i try to boot the computer to install an OS or whatever, i'm greeted with a grey screen with no logo and no "chime" sound.Keyboard seems unresponsive except for the power button.

    What I've tried:

    • Removing the SSD and the Wifi card to check if the boot error came from one of those; No results
    • Tried all Keyboard shortcut at the boot provided here : https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht201255 ; No results
    • Tried clearing all the PRAM and SMC ; No results
    • Left the computer open for 2 hours in hope of a miracle; No results
    • Crying; No results, just tears.

    Things to know:

    • This is not my first Mac/Macbook/Computer-with-an-eaten-apple-on-it that i restore thus i'm positive that no error were encountered while in the Disk manager
    • I don't have an access to a mac anymore, so i can't do a Boot Usb with Diskmaker. I do have a windows computer with the trial version of transmac on it. So far, Tried the DMG from Sierra and High Sierra with no results.
    • I have a USB stick with a light on it, the light is solid, not blinking, indicating that computer might be frozen

About the mac Itself: All the specs and tech stuff can be found here : https://support.apple.com/kb/sp670?locale=en_US Ram: 4Go SSD: 128Go CPU: i5

Thanks for your time and help!

    Macbook Tracking

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 07:26 AM PDT

    Pop quiz to the subreddit...

    SCENARIO

    • Your mac goes missing (stolen or lost)
    • Find my mac was never activated by yourself
    • Somebody else has your mac and has registered find your mac

Granted find your mac can be used by the current "owner" of the laptop via their own apple id however as its rightful owner,

    TRACKING OPTIONS

    • Is there anyway of tracking it?
    • For example by serial number?
    • Could Apple themselves on request by insurance company and or law enforcement track via serial?

New Macbook changes for Late 2018 release!

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 01:13 AM PDT

I decided to come up with a list of what I think would be awesome to change or upgrade for the new 2018 Macbooks rumored to be launching in late 2018:

    1. Intel 6-core 8th gen CPUs
    2. New GPUs (Prefer Nvidia, however nothing new has been released recently, GTX1060 or better)
    3. 32GB LPDDR4 RAM as an option
    4. Faster, cheaper SSD upgrade options
    5. 99.5 Watt Hour battery like in 2015 rMBP, as long as thickness doesn't increase too much
    6. 120Hz display, OLED screen (VERY unlikely), Touch Screen (even more unlikely)
    7. Speakers that face upwards, not down, on touchbar models (and no fake speaker grilles)
    8. Face ID (c'mon Apple, the isight cam is STILL 720p?)
    9. More durable butterfly keys, we all know why
    10. OLED keyboard (Either keyboard has OLED keys for each keycap (like art lebedev keyboards), the entire keyboard is one giant oled and each key sits on top (which may be why the butterfly keys were actually created) or there is a giant touchbar with force-touch)
    11. Liquid Metal cooling, I know this is corrosive even to copper, but maybe Apple can figure this out?
    12. 802.11 AD Wifi, Bluetooth 5.0
