How Two Factor Authentication Screwed Me

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 11:26 AM PDT

I got robbed a few nights ago, had my car, phone, wallet, laptop and more stolen from me. I was held at knifepoint and told to remove the lock on my phone, which I did. When I got home and was able to work on getting back into the account, I had discovered that the thief had changed my trusted phone number and password.

If I try to go through the forgot password process, it asks me for that new phone number. I've spoken to Apple numerous times and had several requests sent to an "engineering" team including serial numbers of my devices, credit cards used in the past to make purchases, police reports, and my recovery key when I had initially setup two factor authentication.

Every request I send in gets denied, I'm effectively locked out of my 10+ year old Apple Account, with my photo library, iMessage on the cloud, and tons of other sensitive information.

I have a few devices at home still including my Apple Watch and Apple TV but those are useless when it comes to recovering a two factor authenticated account.

After having submitted multiple requests to engineering and having everything denied, I sent an email to Tim yesterday in hopes that he may see it.

Hoping that by posting this that anyone who has gone through this before can share their experience. This is also a warning to not keep multiple devices that can authorize two factor in the same place.

For those that are looking for nice background for your iPhone, iPad etc.

I use this site for websites i build but these gradients look amazing as iPhone wallpapers.

Just click on the top right where it says "download" and download it to your images and set it as your wallpaper from there.

    Enjoy

    Opinions on iCloud Keychain?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 07:29 AM PDT

I'm currently using 1Password to manage my passwords and generate 2fa codes. I've been thinking to use iCloud Keychain and Authy to generate the 2fa codes instead. Is this a good idea?

    Oral History of Avie Tevanian

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 04:30 PM PDT

As one of the commenters writes under session 2, "Avie was one of the most important people at Apple. He built macOS from the ground up, which is probably the most difficult task in the industry. His mark showed on everything in its quality and how he would always nail the fundamentals. His job was also very thankless and that's kind of disappointing."

[Unofficial] iPhone 7 Series Replacement Program (Audio IC)

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 10:57 AM PDT

Please upvote to help spread the word!

Hey everyone! I hope this can help spread the word about the Audio IC Issue that the iPhone 7 Series suffer from and Apple's solution to fix it.

(To cut to the chase, scroll down to the Apple Store Genius Appointment section)

    Background

Two weeks ago, I bought a 128 gigabyte iPhone 7 Plus Black off of eBay for $280. (See original listing here) The description said that the microphone was bad and that speaker phone didn't work. (The listing also said that there was a minor crack on the bottom left-hand corner of the iPhone) Not realizing that these are symptoms of a bad Audio IC chip, I decided to buy it and a new microphone for it.

Once it was delivered, I was extremely tempted to replace the microphone off of the bat. But, I decided to ask /r/MobileRepair what they think and a user by the name ToxicTurkey said that it sounded like a bad Audio IC chip. I did my own research about the Audio IC Chip Issue in the iPhone 7 series and I came to my own conclusion that mine had gone bad. (If you don't know what the Audio IC Chip issue is, check out these articles from REWA and Motherboard).

    Apple Store Genius Appointment

After diagnosing the problem, I decided to set up a Genius Appointment at my local Apple Store. (3rd parties charge around $150 to fix this issue) Prior to the appointment, I spoke to Apple Support Online. (See transcript here)

The morning of my appointment, I update my iPhone to iOS 11.4. (Previously, it ran iOS 11.3.1. RIP Jailbreak) At my appointment, the Genius said that she would want to run some tests on it to isolate the problem. (She had the notes from the online support chat) She brings out this dock which tests the speakers and the Audio IC Chip. After failing to complete the testing TWO times, she disappears in the back room for a couple of minutes and comes back with a brand new iPhone 7 Plus. She gives it to me, explaining what went wrong. I walked out with a brand new iPhone 7 Plus. The best part of the story is that it is running iOS 11.3.1. I also learned that Apple would charge $350 to fix this issue. (It would classify as 'other damage')

    Hope this helps!

Edit #1: The iPhone was out of warranty.

Can't Install 10.6 Server in Parallels

    Posted: 24 Jun 2018 12:14 AM PDT

Every time I try to install it, it will show the Apple with the loading circle under it for a little bit. Then the Apple with change to a Circle with a line through it and it never installs. I am not sure what I can do here but I would really like to get this installed so I can use Rosetta for my legacy PPC apps. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Apple EarPods are highly underrated

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 03:51 PM PDT

I've gone through many pairs of earbuds. I've tried some respected third party brands, but I continue to revert back to Apple's stock EarPods. I can't find an earbud as comfortable as Apple's that also stays in my ear and has very decent sound quality. I think the sound quality is the most underrated part of their earbuds. The wired EarPods sound so much better than the wireless headphones I've been prototyping in the $100-$150 range. I'll gladly pay $30 for an earphone that sounds better, fits, and is comfortable. The tricky part is making sure they don't break.

This alone has made me want to go to the AirPods, as they are the same shape, same sound quality, and also stay in your ear. I'll have to save up for them, as they are expensive, but at this point, they seem worth it.

Your unlocked iPhone can be locked by your carrier

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 03:13 PM PDT

Just a heads up for those of you who have bought unlocked phones. I bought an iPhone 7 unlocked from and Apple store and used it with a prepaid T-Mobile SIM card. When I put in a SIM card from a different provider I received a message along the likes of "your iPhone is locked to a different activation server". After multiple calls with T-Mobile and Apple the story goes: a carrier is able to lock an Apple phone to their service. It doesn't matter whether you purchased the phone from Apple or from a carrier, outright or through a plan. Whatever SIM you have in your phone - your provider can lock you to their service and unlocking takes multiple days. It my case it was very inconvinient as I had no usable phone for days. If a provider refuses to unlock a phone, there is "nothing Apple can do" according to Apple support. Of course an email to Tim Cook went unanswered.

I travel often and need a phone which works with different SIM cards. Unfortunately I can no longer trust my iPhone to actually work when I need it. Shame on Apple - they can easily filter out phones purchased directly from Apple and prohibit carriers from locking these phones. Half-baked tech in production from the biggest company in the world... I'll be using a Sony phone from now on.

speculation: apple holding up macbook refresh to fix keyboards

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 06:49 AM PDT

Basically the title. Given the announcement that they'll cover keyboard repairs and whatnot, it would make sense that they were trying to fix the keyboard fiasco before digging themselves deeper into a hole.

All I want is an updated motherboard/cpu and 32 gigs of ram. :\ with a 2013 keyboard and form factor.

How to turn back on Peak Performance Capacity?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 08:34 PM PDT

I recently turned off Peak Performance Capacity on my iPhone 6s, but got a lot of random battery jumps and crashes. Apple says the only way to turn it back on is to have an unexpected crash and it will automatically turn on — this haven't been the case for me. Any other ideas on how to turn it back on?

    Advice on apps for budgeting

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 08:33 AM PDT

We are in the final stages of buying a house, which is really exciting but super daunting! I know there are loads of budgeting apps out there for a range of types of situation, but have you had any particular luck with any specific apps? We have a MacBook, iPhones, iPads, Apple watches so anything that crosses the whole spectrum is cool too. Thanks!

iPhone 6s Plus Apple logo scratched/dented

    Posted: 24 Jun 2018 12:47 AM PDT

I recently went to a beach and saw a tiny grain of sand get stuck on my phone's case, when I removed it I realized it left a tiny speck placed in the middle of the apple logo. It's been weeks now and I can't seem to find a way to remove it. It's kind of irritating me just looking at it. Are there any ways to remove/lighten it?

Looking for a file/hard drive comparison app

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 11:45 AM PDT

So, I'm starting to migrate nearly 4TB worth of data (images/raw files/etc) onto one larger hard drive that used to be split between smaller drives.

I'd like to find an app that can compare directories/drives to make sure that I'm not missing anything, including potential changes; though most of the folders/files haven't changed, I just want to be sure.

Will for sure pay for a quality app if anyone has any recommendations.

    Thanks!

I haven't been able to find a picture/info of Logic with the new Dark Mode anywhere, is that not getting a redesign?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 04:51 AM PDT

Dark Mode will be available for all system apps in Mojave, and FCPX/Motion/Compressor were already given a dark mode well before Mojave was announced. Has anyone heard of Logic getting a dark mode as well? Seems weird they'd just leave it out like that, and I doubt they just forgot about it, but I haven't seen any evidence of it coming.

Apple Pay Discounts - When Does The Discount Apply?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2018 08:02 PM PDT

    Apologies for the noob question.

I just received a promo email from Apple saying: "Get 15% off from adidas."

When does the discount actually apply? I just bought something through the Adidas app and there wasn't a discount applied to the total.
