    iPhone Backups and their importance

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:33 PM PDT

This is just a message to the community:

I constantly see posts about people not making backups of their supposedly important photos until it is too late. And then they make posts in their desperation, and it is kind of sad.

I stress this because what if your iPhone was stolen today? Or you dropped it in the toilet, it falls off of the roof of your car and onto the highway, or you forget the passcode?

I come from /r/DataHoarder with my logic when I make this post. If you have something important, you need to back it up twice. Any data you haven't backed up is data you are willing to lose.

There are many offerings from different cloud services that offer very good prices for space for not just your iPhone. There are enough, that I don't think it can be an excuse anymore to say "I didn't backup my photos." That is just negligence.

    Apple

Apple offers iCloud storage space for not only phone backups, but photos. If you turn on iCloud Photo Library, you can use the iCloud space for photos only and unlink the photo back up from your actual back ups, and use the space for the photos only.

The costs are extremely modest for what most people will need, and you can read more here. You can also pay for the storage space using iTunes Store credit. Multiply all costs by 12 to find the cost for the year. If you can manage that cost in a day, you can manage it in a year.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201238

If you have a Mac, this is extremely valuable. You can automatically backup and upload your Documents and Desktop in iCloud as your backup. Everything you put on your computer will have mirror in the cloud, which is the goal of a backup.

I personally use the 50 GB, $0.99 a month option with iCloud photo library on. My backup is 5.89 GB for two iPads, and my iPhone, and my photos are 14.5 GB. I have a Windows PC, so I use iCloud Photo Library to download my photos to my PC as secondary storage. (That drive is also cloned to a NAS, but I am reaching datahoarder territory, so I'll leave that alone.)

Pros: Integrated in iOS. Will do so automagically.
    Cons: Wifi only :(

    Google

Google offers free unlimited storage of your photos if they are allowed to reduce the quality. Some people have privacy concerns b/c Google will likely use the images for data gathering, but I use it as a backup for iCloud.

You can opt to upload as full resolution, but this will take away from your Google Drive/GMail storage now that they have been combined. 15 GB is free, but you can pay to have more.

    https://www.google.com/drive/pricing/

Unfortunately, on iOS, you need to have the app OPEN to start photo upload. Happily, if you have an Android device as well, you can see the pictures on it as well.

Pro: Free for people with a GMail address, extra storage can used on Mac and PC for backups, and filesharing, and Android. LTE photo backups!
Cons: Expensive in my opinion, requires the app to be open.

    Microsoft/OneDrive

OneDrive is offered with Office 365 for $70 a year. For $70 a year, you get access to the full Office suite for Mac or PC, and on one tablet, and one smartphone, as well as 1 TB of OneDrive space.

If you have a PC, this is extremely valuable. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad with Bitlocker, and the hard drive is EFI password locked. This means, should the laptop die or be stolen, my data is encrypted, and the hard drive is locked, but I'd like to access it elsewhere.

OneDrive will allow you to create Desktop, Document, and Picture folders inside of the OneDrive folder instead and use those as your actual Desktop, Documents and Pictures much like iCloud on Mac.

5 GB of storage is free, but for $70/yr you can get 1 TB which is amazing. You have no choice but to upload full res photos and video to OneDrive, and the app has to be open in order to upload.

Background uploading is hit and miss, but this is a backup to iCloud, and I can access it from my Android device, my PC, or my Mac

Pro: Extra storage can used on Mac and PC for backups, and filesharing, and Android. LTE photo backups!
Cons: Requires the app to be open.

If there are more cloud services out there, I'd love to hear all about them!

    Yearly expenditures:
$70 for OneDrive and Office 365. (Less if I can find a deal)
$12 ($11.88 if we are being real) for iCloud Nothing for Google.

Total: $82. $82 for space to backup my Photos for a year. People spend more on that on coffee :<

Minor but very useful change in iOS 11.3 for those who have apps from multiple countries’ app stores.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 07:13 AM PDT

I'm wondering if anyone else noticed this, but perhaps this situation doesn't apply to many people... I moved from the UK to the US, so I have a mix of apps from the UK and US app stores on my phone. Previously, whenever I wanted to update the apps from either country I would have to change the country of the App Store. However, since I updated to iOS 11.3, updates for all apps are appearing in the update list regardless of which store I'm in. I hope this isn't just a bug!

iOS Sleep Analysis - Bedtime, SleepCycle, Nightly

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 06:39 AM PDT

What tools do you use for sleep analysis on iPhone, and why? I have been using SleepCycle and the native bedtime app. It seems as though, that the native bedtime app does not track REM/actual sleep, but only the "time spent in bed". However, is this even relevant? Let me know what you think.

What are some good iPhone X supported casual/puzzle games?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 05:24 AM PDT

Right now, I'm playing a lot of Mazy Maze. Too much I should say. What are some good casual puzzle games with easy controls to play on the go with my iPhone X?

No silver iPhone X on stock at the store when I dropped in, so I bought a white silicon case, it's ok. The dust is not visible on white color.

    Charging chime stops on 11.3

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 04:41 AM PDT

I've noticed a strange behavior since the 11.3 update on iPhone X. Over time, the phone will no longer turn the screen on and make the charging confirmation sound when plugged in. If I do a restart it functions normally for a few hours then goes off again. Restored twice (one restored a backup, one started with a fresh phone). Anyone else having a similar experience?

Is the iPhone 8 Plus worth it for the camera?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 03:35 AM PDT

I want to either upgrade to the iPhone 8 or the 8 plus. I originally wanted the plus because it has a bigger screen but then when I read about the camera being better I wanted it even more as I'm into photography. Only problem is I have very small hands and when I tried holding my friends iPhone 6s Plus I found it quite awkward and a little uncomfortable. So basically my question is, do you think the camera on the iPhone 8 Plus is worth putting up with the bigger size? Maybe I will get used to holding it?

Somehow, all camera roll pics are now in a “New Folder” at the bottom of the page. Camera roll empty.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 09:22 AM PDT

I found my old phone and wanted to add my old pics to the one on my iphone 8 but they were all out of order. So I tried to copy them all to pc and rearrange and add again via sync and now the roll is empty.

Is there anyway to get them back into my camera roll? This really sucks.

    Can't update to 11.3 - iPhone X

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 09:11 AM PDT

Wondering what might be the problem / fix here. I've tried updating many times to 11.3 and each time, after downloading, installing, and rebooting, I'm taken back to the screen that tells me 11.2.6 has been installed. 11.3 never gets installed. What sort of cobwebs do I need to clear out before I can update to 11.3? Thanks!

Should I get a battery replacement?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 08:22 AM PDT

Ever since I updated my 6S to iOS 11.3 my battery has been draining extremely quick and dying usually within 2 hours, which is terrible compared to 11.2.6. I've had my phone since December 2016 and the battery settings shows me that my battery is still at 90% capacity. I've tried backing my phone up and doing a complete reset but the issue is still there. My phone also fell under those serial number of those 6S' that are able to get a battery replacement for unexpected shutdowns, should I use that?

I Got a strange message today

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:54 PM PDT

    images

I got a message from an unregistered contact that somehow has the name "IOS". The body of the message was "you have one message pending. Continue: www.mobile-apple-id.com" when I try to click on the contact info it's completely blank. no name, no phone number or even and email address. Obviously suspicious, so I googled the domain to see if someone else had encountered this and lo and behold, all the results are the genuine Apple Support website. And the pages weren't user submitted issues, they were generic FAQs about signing in and changing your password and all that and absolutely nothing about this odd domain. So I went a step further and did a WHOIS Lookup and everything made sense. It's a phishing scam, the domain was very recently registered. Please beware from messages like this. I still don't understand how their contact info was blank.

    What are some calendar apps?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 03:43 AM PDT

Right now I'm using Fantastical 2. Love the app with the dark theme. My only gripe is the calendar widget only shows events for the day. I have the stock Apple "Up Next" widget up so I can see upcoming calendar events. Love Fantastical because the calendar and reminders are all in one. Anyway to have Fantastical show upcoming events or know any other calendar apps that have this capability?

It seems I receive notifications from the Gmail app immediately, while the default Mail app there is a delay. Is there a way to make the Mail app as immediate?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 11:38 PM PDT

I have been using both the default Mail app and the Gmail app because the Gmail app notifies me about an email immediately, but lacks the functionality the default Mail app has of being able to "mark as read" from the lock screen. Both of these features are important to me so I use both, but would love to be able to ditch the Gmail app if I could receive email notifications immediately like I do with the Gmail app. I imagine this is some setting that has to do with Fetching or Pushing but I am not exactly sure. Any tips? Thanks in advance!
