After asking you guys if iPad Pro 9.7 would be fine for art in 2018, I thought i'd come back and give a short review.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:00 PM PDT

I came to this subreddit a month ago to ask how an iPad Pro 9.7" would be for a casual artist/student studying a non-art degree as a main device for art. here

So i've had the iPad Pro for 25 days now, and the pencil for 22 days. So just over 3 weeks, and thought some of you may want a small update.

    The good

    • biggest concern was that i thought the screen size would be too small to draw on, and this was primarily made worse by a youtube review by a guy called Nihongo Gamer. I can confidently say that i've had 0 issue drawing in either portrait or landscape mode when using Procreate, and that the experience has been flawless. I never feel cramped. It's awesome.

    • Procreate is awesome. The gestures are very intuitive (altho layer properties took a little to get used to), and most the pens feel excellent to sketch with.

    • Battery life is amazing. I've had a few 7-8 hour drawing sessions on the iPad and it usually starts to die near the end, this is usually with the screen brightness at max. Very happy here.

    • The apple pencil is the best stylus i've ever used. There is no parallax, holy fuck this is great. I prefer the thinness of the pencil compared to the wacom pen, and the old Surface Pro 2 pen i had was too small/flimsy in comparison to this. (no idea how SP3+ pens are).

    • The colors look fantastic on this device. On my monitor, the colors were never that great (cheap monitor). This feels much more accurate/what im going for, and is more consistent with my mobile and other displays i've used.

    The bad

    • At the end of the day, this is an iPad and i miss the proper version of Photoshop. I sometimes tether the screen to my windows desktop, but it's an imperfect solution.

    • Anything other than Procreate isn't that great to draw in. Clip Studio is kinda clunky, and there's a bit of lag here. The lack of touch gestures really holds other apps back, as i constantly try to use the gestures to do shit.

    • iPad is slow as hell to charge. Why don't these devices have quick charge? At the end of the day, it still does fuck up my workflow during drawing if i need to stop and charge.

    • Even when using the device on a desktop computer (using easy canvas) the iPad slowly discharges.

    • charging the pen is awkward as hell. Glad it's quick, but it feels so awkward to do.

    The neutral

    • I miss an eraser at the end of my pen. I eventually got used to it, but it's handy to have. Not a big deal.

    • Tethering to my computer is awkward with the cable. the screen size is small here, and i usually crop the screen so i get 70% of the desktop screen for more drawing area on the iPad. The aspect ratio means it would be heard to use on windows otherwise. (Easy Canvas is still amazing, cheap and i do recommend it).

I still 100% recommend a first gen iPad Pro for people like me if you can pick one up used. Much cheaper than other screen based sollutions, and very portable.

Disclaimer though; I am not a professional, nor claim to be good.

Here's some of the art i've made on the iPad since getting the device.

You get the idea. iPad is amazing.

If you had just gotten a new 2018 iPad for doing a little art on the side and have been looking for some app to do so, I highly recommend my personal favorites ( for drawing, getting inspired and getting your artwork out there )

Finally joined the family! :) Can confirm: iPad Pro 12,9” makes me feel that I don’t need my MacBook anymore. How about you? Have you seen yourself choosing the iPad over the MacBook?

Smart Keyboard and iOS11.3 Auto Fill

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:42 PM PDT

After upgrading to iOS 11.3 and the tap a field to autofill feature, I cannot find a way to get the autofill function at the bottom of the screen when I'm using the Smart Keyboard. Anyone else having this issue? It's maddening because I use my iPad 99% of the time in landscape mode with the keyboard.

My theory on why you need a physical keyboard with your iPad .... And why you really don't.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:30 PM PDT

My theory on why you "need" a physical keyboard with your iPad...hear me out.

Let's start this with a fair warning: I don't speak English very well so expect a few things to get lost in translation... Also this gonna be a long read so if you're interested but busy at the moment go ahead and save it for later.

Ok, this post is mainly for Apple Smart Keyboard owners or any other physical iPad keyboard...and if those who are longing for mouse support on the iPad. I've been reading on various forums that one of the biggest limitations of the iPad as a laptop replacement was the keyboard where users find themselves needing to reaching out to the screen as a workaround for the lack of a trackpad and this results in the infamous gorilla arm gesture...the other option is to stick with the onscreen keyboard which you hate even more but why you hate it and favor of the not so much better experience you get with physical keyboards is what I want to talk about today.

We all know Apple has shifted to pitching iPads as laptop replacements, and those who opened up to the idea were mostly coming from traditional laptops expecting an UX comparable to the one on their old devices but unsurprisingly most are bashing the iPad for its poor input options....but it's only poor compared to where they are coming from, these people may have decades in history with using keyboard and other traditional input methods such as the mouse, so when they try an iPad they think of it as being backwards when Tim Cook said something in the lines of " iPad is the clearest of our vision when it comes to future personal computing"....with future being the keyword...it's clear that the iPad is the designed for the generation to come, a generation that has grown up with touchscreens, one that mostly types on touchscreens and one that thinks traditional PC form factors are "lame". You who have used a keyboard and a mouse for the better half of your computing life will undoubtedly find a touch centric device cumbersome... But those kids and even young adults see that touchscreen and onscreen keyboard is the norm, is the default way of interacting with a modern device and most don't care for the benefits traditional input methods like the mouse and keyboards bring to the table because....you can't miss what you never had. Of course I'm aware a mouse cursor is more precise than a fat finger and that touch typing- not to be confused with touchscreen typing, to touch type is to use the 10 fingers to type on a physical keyboard with out looking at the keys which results in faster typing- is at least 4 times faster than onscreen typing but I personally believe the Alternative isn't bad at all, it's quite good actually; the Apple Pencil is a great replacement for the mouse when you need to be precise and the onscreen keyboard with its predictive text, shortcuts, autocorrect and the genius double tap to move the cursor is more than a well thought out alternative to classic keyboards. If you still don't see my point look at your handwriting! Chances are - at least if you're American - you are typewriter ( your handwriting mimics typed letters) as opposed to being a cursive writer, years ago cursive was the default and was thought in schools because it was more faster to write in cursive ( much like physical keyboards ,don't you think? ) but with the rise of prints people shifted to typewriting because it was readable and looked neater and cursive became something more common amongst seniors and is largely unreadable by most other people, again this at least the case in the U.S. This is where I end this post, my longest on Reddit so far, I feel I haven't fully communicated my thoughts but I hope at least something has gotten through... P.S this was written entirely on my iPad with on screen keyboard while comfortably lying on bed on my back with iPad on portrait mode on my chest.... I have yet to find a laptop that can do this.

Best screen protector pencil clacking noise?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:09 PM PDT

Hi Reddit, First time Ipad user, got the 6th gen 9.7 with the pencil. I take notes for class, and have been researching how to stop or at least muffle the clacking when using the pencil. I use a light hand, but even barely raising the pencil and placing it back down to write is still quite loud.

What is the best screen protector that could do just that?

    Thanks!

Anyone else find iOS 11 a bit laggy with an iPad Mini 4?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 07:09 AM PDT

I know the iPad Mini 4 is getting on a bit under the hood, although actually it runs games very well and I really enjoy the form factor for games and reading.

However, since upgrading to iOS 11 I've noticed that key parts of the UI are surprisingly laggy, for example bringing up the control centre and adjusting the brightness is noticeably dropping frames all over the place.

Is anyone else finding this, particularly that example above (which might seem minor but I'm always using the control centre)? Wondering if it's worth attempting a reset or if it's just how things are — which would be poor on Apple's part seeing as it remains their latest device of this size.

    A question about Apple Pencil

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 08:53 AM PDT

Does Apple sell single replacement nibs? I sold my iPad on eBay, but one of the tips is a bit worn. I've seen listings on eBay for nibs that look like they're individually packaged. I thought Apple only sold those in packs of four or together with the pencil. Are these legit?

    EDIT:

I want to buy a replacement, but I want it to be genuine Apple hardware. No telling how well or poorly a fake would work.

    Hey iPad 6th gen/2018 owners...

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:26 AM PDT

Have some questions about the new iPad, hope you can help answer

    1. Does the new iPad support Hey Siri? The previous iPad 2017 or 5th gen model did not despite having a A9 CPU.

    2. Also, does Instant Notes work? (By tapping the Apple Pencil on the lock screen?)

iPad 12.9 or 10.5 for IT consulting? (Currently on Air 2)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 07:57 AM PDT

I do IT consulting, so not a lot of drawing and artistry. Though I do some note taking and mockups occasionally.

I carry my Air 2 everywhere to remotely manage Networks, answer emails, schedule appointments and manage my OmniFocus tasks.

I like using split view for email and OmniFocus which lets me get things into task lists quickly. But once I pop up on screen keyboard, I have a tiny viewing area for both apps. As I am getting older, this is harder to see.

Been considering the 12.9 due to my eyes having trouble with the 9.7 screen. But read somewhere there is not a big difference on the 12.9 due to the resolution offsetting the font size (or something). Is that true?

So I was wondering if any other IT consultants use the 12.9 and wouldn't go back? Is the 10.5 the sweet spot? Or should I just stay with the Air2 for now?

Would you recommend 32 or 128 GB iPad?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:23 AM PDT

I am planning to buy my first iPad. I own an iPhone 6s 64 GB model. I have no issues with space on that.

I have an Android tablet with a 64gB sd card. I am planning to switch to ipad mainly due to the pencil support.

Unfortunately there are only 2 variants, 32 and 128 GB. My main goal of the ipad is for reading and notes taking. ( I am not a student !)

Do you guys think 32GB is sufficient?

Suggestion for a kid 8y for gaming ipad?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 07:09 AM PDT

Hey guys, I do not follow apple products that much, so looking for help. Kid 8y plays minecraft and other games on roughly 4-5 year old ipad. I'm looking for performance increase with good storage space (128gb+), since its getting very slow for newer games. What apple ipad models currently are new and fresh, work with this kind of use? Screen size and fast refresh rate are most important for the pad gaming I guess.

Does anyone know if cases for the 2017 ipad will fit the 2018?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:27 AM PDT

Just bought a 2017 and I'm still within the return window. Might as well kick up the little bit of extra cash for some future proofing. That said, I already got some cases from Amazon that I like and don't feel like returning. Does anyone know if they should work?

Looking to upgrade from my iPad 2 (2012)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:20 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've been using my iPad 2 for about 6 years now and I think it's finally run its course. My question is simple: Should I upgrade to the new 2018 iPad or the iPad pro (10.5")?

My iPad will not be replacing my laptop at all (2017 Macbook Pro w/ Touchbar) so I'm hesitant on getting the pro because I'm not sure if I'll need everything it does. But is the extra money worth the investment? How big of an improvement will the 2018 iPad/iPad Pro be from my iPad 2? (I know it'll be massive, but just wondering because I'm a bit excited).

    Thanks a lot!

    2017 iPad or 2018

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:54 AM PDT

So if I don't currently have an iPad but I would maybe like to get one, is there any reason I shouldn't just buy the 2017 for $250 instead of the 2018 for $330? I don't THINK I care about the pencil, and would mostly be used for youtube, social media, and some gaming (PUBG Mobile/Maybe Fortnite).

Seems like a good deal to just go for the 2017 if I decided to get one in the near future.

Ipad Pro 10.5 - trying to load XAVC-S files onto Ipad to edit

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:01 AM PDT

Long story short I own a Sony A6000 and have been trying to load my good quality movies onto my ipad. It will sometimes upload my MP4's but the quality is so bad it's not even worth it.

I have tried everything I've found on the internet and still haven't figured out a solution that works yet.

Anyone do this or have any advice?
