Face-ID is leagues beyond Touch-ID for me

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 09:15 PM PDT

The more I use it the more I am impressed with it. I remember hearing the original rumours that they were going to drop Touch-ID in favour of facial recognition and being completely opposed to the idea. Touch-ID worked moderately for me, only working 60% of the time, after many, many sessions of training it in the menus and resetting my fingers every so often. But at least it was better than typing passwords.

Then comes Face-ID. At first I was already happy it unlocks my phone successfully about 98% of the time which was a massive improvement (the 2% of the time being when it doesn't attempt an unlock as opposed to failing out-right, I'm not sure why). People say it's not as fast which isn't my experience. I'm not sure if it's because my hands are clamy or my finger prints are 'pronounced' as much, but Face-ID is plenty-fast for me. Even if it wasn't I'd be happy to sacrifice a little speed for this high of a successful-authentication percentage.

Seeing as it succeeds so often I've since changed my unlock PIN to an alpha-numeric password. I did this after the news came out that devices exist that can brute-force an iPhone 4-6 digit PIN code, but mainly because I might as well now that I don't really use a code thanks to Face-ID. This would be a no-go if I was still Touch-ID as it failed so often I would be wasting a considerable amount of time entering in a longer password. Now I've made the switch the last time I entered a password was after a restart. Awesome. It seems the sentiment is shared with apple seeing as they changed the default for lock-screen notifications to be hidden before the device is unlocked.

It's so much more convenient too. Logging into services used to be a drawn-out process of either remembering a username and password or digging out my details from a password manager. Touch-ID evolved that into just holding my thumb over the sensor to log-in. But now with Face-ID (and Apple's great new feature where they no longer require devs to use an API to access the password manager) I just literally look at the screen and I'm logged in. Especially useful in a world where literally every service you use requires you to have an account. Face-ID's ability to work despite your face being partially covered is impressive, but my favourite use-case is when my phone is sitting below my monitor and it can still scan and unlock to show me notifications.

Touch-ID will not be missed, by me at least.

My weird feature request- iCloud Fonts

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 03:10 PM PDT

One of my pet peeves is when I start a project on my desktop, and then want to work on it further on my laptop (on the go), and I open it and lots of the fonts are missing because one computer has more of them than the other.

Font Book.app should sync the fonts across all the macs signed into your iCloud account. iCloud Fonts! Would solve a lot of problems.

I think adobe has some kind of solution to this but I fucking hate their ecosystem and their keep-piling-on-new-features-and-disregard-stability update culture

    thanks for reading

New iPhone X and Apple Pay Commercials

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 06:42 PM PDT

Apple needs to promote how easy Apple Pay is, and these great 10-second ads help to share that message. They don't mention anything about safety, which I think is some people's concern, but you can only do so much when you're working with such a short time-frame. Check these new ads out. I think they're great.

Apple Releases First Beta of macOS High Sierra 10.13.5 to Public Beta Testers

Just had a great interaction with Apple Support over an AirPod issue.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 07:19 PM PDT

So I have had my Airpods for about 4 months and within the last couple of days, I have noticed a rattle or vibration in the right bud when music with bass is played. This sort of noise is typical when the cone is damaged or defective in audio equipment.

I do not beat on my AirPods and then have not been exposed to moister.

At any rate, I just spoke to support chat for over an hour and they are sending me a replacement bud at no cost within the next couple of days!

Cheers Apple, I appreciate it :)

Family Sharing now allows members from different countries

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 02:51 PM PDT

Not sure if this is new, but I believe that there was a change in the way family sharing worked with family members with accounts from different countries. I'm based in the U.K. and was 'stuck' to my Apple ID set to Portugal because I didn't want to break my family share (my parents live in Portugal and access the Portuguese App Store). What I've noticed yesterday was that I was able to change my country to the U.K. and the family stayed intact without the need of removing any member. I can't access their purchases but we can share the iCloud storage plan (not sure about Apple Music subscription) and family albums / calendars / etc. This might be a small change but it's a big deal for me.

Why doesn’t Apple have better data tracking built in?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 04:38 PM PDT

Androids data plan section in the settings can give u all kinds of stats on your data usage, and RESETS EVERY MONTH AUTOMATICALLY. Why doesn't the iOS data tracking do that? I get annoyed every time I have to use a third party app, but no one said anything about this yet. Is everyone done with it or just me?

Edit apparently Apple did this in iOS 11 with this feature but most carriers don't support it http://bgr.com/2017/07/12/ios-11-new-features-cellular-data-usage/

Is it possible to change my @icloud.com email address?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 02:49 PM PDT

Okay so my Apple ID is tied to an @outlook.com account and within manage my Apple account is says I am contactable by my @outlook.com, my phone number and my @icloud.com.

Now I would like to change the my @icloud.com email to something more respectable (it mirrors my @outlook which is well not so respectful) and then once I've changed my @icloud.com email, I will then replace it as my default login for my Apple ID instead of the @outlook.com account.

    Apple Music vs Google Music

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 07:49 AM PDT

I'm still using Google Music from my Android days and thinking about switching to Apple Music (mostly so I can have it on my Apple TV). Does anyone have any experiences of both, pros & cons, etc...

What It'll take for me to switch to Apple Music

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 11:09 PM PDT

I started out music streaming about 3 years ago with apple music and last december i decided id take the plunge into spotify and here I am trying AM once again but i keep sticking with spotify.

I have some suggestions that will convert me to apple music for good:

    1. Have "for you" refresh every day (sort of like daily mix). Id like apple to sort it into genres like spotify and refresh every day because having the same playlist for a week is boring.

    2. Change "New Music Mix" to include songs from different time periods and not just recent ones. This is what i believe to be AM equivalent of discover weekly but it doesn't give me songs from the 70's, 80's etc since I listen mostly to songs from that period. The "New Music Mix" just gives me current songs that ive never even remotely heard of and not even from the same genre I listen to.

    3. Include search function within playlists. This seems like such an oversight but its a simple QOL change.

    4. Improve User created playlist search. How do i explain this? Lets say I want to find a playlist on spotify that has to do with "Harry Potter"; I simply search "harry potter" and spotify will show me all playlists that include the words "harry potter" in them. AM, on the other hand, will only show me playlists that are called "Harry Potter" and nothing else. For example, I follow a playlist called "harry potter sleep" on Spotify, and all id have to do is search "harry Potter" on spotify and "HPS" would eventually come up whereas on AM, Id have to search exactly the playlist im looking for to see if anyone made it.

    5. Overall playlist improvements- One MAJOR area that Spotify has the advantage in is playlists. They have a playlist for everything (including obscure things) whereas AM playlists are lacking in that department. This includes playlists curated by AM themselves as well.

    6. Song play counts- this isnt a big one but itd be cool to see the top songs from artists sorted by their play count.

    7. 3rd party device support & handoff- this is a BIGGIE. I can play spotify on virtually every smart device in my house. Apple Music? Nope, you need a homepod or apple tv to cast it anywhere easily. Ill also add the ability to hand off songs between devices ala spotify.

Now Im not trying to suck off spotify b/c there are things id like from them as well such as the ability to have album view when searching artists ala Am.

This is what I can think of rn atm but feel free to add your suggestions
