If you are looking for a grindy, close knit community MMO, give Villagers & Heroes a try (bonus points for Ultima Online fans)!

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:02 AM PST

Villagers & Heroes was recently released on iOS. It has a really great community and is updated fairly regularly. Here is my take on this game.

    • If you are a fan of Ultima Online, and are looking for your old-school MMO fix, this is probably the closest you will get for now.

    • There are 4 classes (warrior, archer, mage, priest) and all classes has 2 specs. Can't say much about end-game, as I am nowhere near that, but so far the process has been fun. Tip: Don't skip the quest text! Honestly, the journey is what makes this game interesting. There is also fair bit of voice acting which is very rare in mobile MMO's.

    • There are 10 skills; Mining, Fishing, Bug Lore and Plant Lore for Gatheting Skills, Blacksmithing, Cooking, Tailoring and Woodcrafting for Crafting Skills, and two Farming skills: Gardening and Ranching. These are the definition of grinding, and very reminiscent of UO. You can increase your skills by repeatedly performing an action (mining, crafting, feeding your sheep etc.), and the best part is that you get better at crafting certain items the more you craft them! Lets say you want a good level 15 staff. If you craft the same item over and over, you will eventually get better at crafting it, so eventually you can make rarer/stronger version of that item.

    • The game's title refers to two main activities you can do in-game; Villagers: You can own a house (which gives you passive stats), a garden and a ranch. You can change your homes, plant different fruits and vegetables, and raise sheep/pigs/chicken and get their fleece/bacon/eggs. You also have villages (either public or private owned for Guilds) where you can place your home and visit other players' homes and use their crafting tables etc. You can contribute to guild vaults, or donate logs, ores, bugs etc. for others to harvest. Heroes: You kill stuff, get their loot, kill tougher monsters, and repeat. You can also choose to rebirth, giving you more passive skills to use but reset your level back to 1 (while giving you an XP boost till the level that you reset). AFAIK you can reset 4 to 5 times.

    • Everyone's burning question: There is IAP in this game, however in my 40 hour play so far I really don't feel like they are forced. Since there is no PvP in this game, 99% of IAP's are convenience items (bundle crafting, bag/vault space, faster leveling). You could argue "XP potions are pay to win", but this game should be more about the journey rather than the end point, so I don't see the point of rushing through content.

    • The community is superb. Unlike the countless "WoW copy paste" MMO's on mobile, the player count is small but stable, which results in a very close-knit and helpful community. There are veterans still playing this game for over 5+ years, and I got all my questions answered multiple times throughout my experience so far. The stable player count also ensures that the game doesn't feel "dead" (Hint: Refer to their forums for the community, not the subreddit).

    • Cross-platform; you can play on PC, Android, IOS (phone or tablet).

    • Personal opinion: Cartoony graphics similar to vanilla wow, very nostalgic and feels old-school.

Closing words; if you are looking for your shiny Gameloft MMO where you fight in epic battles ala WoW, this game may not be for you. Villagers & Heroes is more deliberate, slow paced, very grindy and feels very nostalgic. If you ever played and enjoyed Ultima Online, this is the closest you can find to that game at the moment. The game's a lot more enjoyable on the tablet, but by no means impossible on phones.

Looking for a turn-based automobile combat game (like the games Car Wars, Autoduel, Roadwar2000, etc.) - greatly prefer non-Fremium

    Does such a thing exist?

I loved those old games. Designing your cars, carefully placing arms and armaments so as to maximize survivability without going over weight limits or being too slow, and then going head to head in an arena, or toughing it out on a abandoned highway against a group of raiders Mad Max style. They were strategy-centric, not action games.

I'm not looking for an action racing game, I hate action games on phones.

I figure it's a long shot, and such games might not exist, but I'm crossing my fingers.

Slay ($4) — My Favourite Old Game

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 10:06 AM PST

Slay is a port of hexagonal turn-based strategy game with very simple rules where you try to take over your enemies' territory to conquer the island. It comes with in-app purchases, but there are so many maps in the base version that I don't really know why you'd buy anything except to support the developer. There are 26 maps per letter, from A to R. That's a lot of maps.

I played this game when it first came out, around 2010(?) and I recently got back into it. I'm currently on "E" trying to beat every map on the Master difficulty.

I highly recommend this game; I know a Starbucks coffee amount feels like a lot to pay for an old mobile game that doesn't even have iPhone X support, but I can honestly say I've spent over 40 hours playing this game.

    Looking for a driving simulator.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:12 PM PST

so as my title says, i'm looking for a driving simulator. not like a racing simulator but just a calm, causal driving simulator. I have tried Truck Simulator USA and I liked it a lot but it's kinda broken for me and I just get random red light crossing fines and stuff like that so i'm interested in finding another. preferably minimal in app purchases but if the game is really good I'll put up with it. thanks!
