I love my iPad but I'm not using it as much as I'd like

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:27 PM PST

    Hello guys,

I currently own an iPad Pro 9.7" + LTE and I have the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard. It is an absolutely amazing combination. The few times I take notes, the Apple Pencil makes this a joy. Whenever I have to type something up, the Smart Keyboard feels great. And for media consumption the iPad by itself does a kickass job.

My problem is that I find myself not picking it up as often as I would like because of the software limitations. I am not trying to say that iOS is limited. There are apps for almost everything, and games for every type of person. - But for some reason, most tasks are simply a lot easier to do on a regular Mac/PC with a traditional OS and mouse. I feel like it's not an iOS problem, but rather a problem with everything else. Websites, programs, the everyday workflow hasn't fully adopted to the devices of the future. And it's a shame.

I'm a PhD student, and certain interactive websites that I use for school just don't seem to load well or allow me to navigate as efficiently. Certain jobs that I do require me to use a browser, and a mail client. Both things fully functional on any iPad. But, again, for some reason, I find myself being lot quicker and more efficient on my MacBook. The precision of a mouse has a lot to do with it, but the snappiness and flexibility of a desktop OS can't be taken for granted either.

It is true that I am a power user, and perhaps I have the knowledge/experience that a simpler user wouldn't have on a computer, making the iPad a better choice. The problem here is that I really love my iPad. I just wish I could use it more. When I'm on the go (commuting, walking around, in & out of class / work, my iPhone X has a terrific screen and does a great job offering me everything I need in those situations. And when I get to sit down, the iPad is great, but I always feel like the 12" MacBook would do the same job faster and more efficiently most of the time, with no extra weight/size sacrifice.

At home, my entire house is rigged with Cast devices (Android TV, Chromecast Audio, and normal Chromecasts) that allow me to just cast my media to a speaker/tv, so I don't really use the iPad at home for that purpose.

Does anyone else feel the same way? Is there any app, service, or something that I might be missing out on that might improve my experience?

As much as I love it, I think I will sell it and keep my Gaming Rig + 12" MacBook + iPhone&AppleWatch setup.

Face ID has gotten a lot better with time

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:22 AM PST

It's been slow and subtle but for me at least face id seems to be working a lot better than when I first got my phone.

Sometimes my hand is partially over my face and it still works. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I hate the new Macbooks produced after 2015

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:31 PM PST

I'm sorry for the rant but ...

Back then, I bought the last generation Macbook - The one with the Touchbar - After 1 year and half of use I strongly discourage you to buy a Macbook released after 2015.

This is the worst Macbook I ever had:

    The Touchbar is a gadget

You will almost never use it and you will keep hitting the "ESC" button many times per day, you can't get used to it and you will grow frustrated as fuck.

Sometimes the user interface of the Touchbar get stuck and you can't control it anymore, you have to switch to another window to make it working.

    Keyboard Butterfly

The first month I really enjoyed the new keyboard, I really liked the sound and the feel of it. That was before some keys started to double click for no reason or don't respond at all.

I thought it was normal (dust ya know) and I could solve the problem like my old Macbook: Remove the keys, clean them, put them back. I was wrong, don't do that, the keys are weak as fuck and you will just break them.

On a personal note, I switched back to a old 2015 Macbook for a while and I truly believe I type more precisely and faster on it.

Crack sound when you open the laptop

If you close the laptop for few hours and open it again you will be surprised to hear a "crack sound", WTF. I didn't spend 3K to have a cheap noise when I open my laptop.

    Anyway

There is other stuff I don't approve on this laptop but I'm fine with it, they are just a matter of preference. As I said I'm sorry for the rant but I'm really pissed about the new generation of laptop produced by Apple. I really start to think I should switch back to the previous generation ...

How do you feel about them guys?

How do you feel about iCloud Drive & the Files App?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 02:43 PM PST

I'm not too content using iCloud Drive . I feel like iCloud Drive just isn't as reliable in syncing or as fast as Dropbox . Files App is a good idea but it crashes too much for me. Overall iCloud works well for many aspects of the iOS / MacOS but when it comes to iCloud Drive and Files it feels half baked . Am I the only one that feels this way ?

Would be great if the Apple TV and HomePods could double as a WiFi bridge/router

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 01:47 AM PST

Not sure how feasible this would be, and as long as it didn't have any impact on the devices performance.

It'd be great if any Apple device (that had both WiFi and power from a wall outlet, ATV and HomePod) could also act as an AirPort Express in bridge mode. I'm not sure what additional hardware that'd involve, maybe an additional antenna or something?? But it'd be great to both have something functional that would also extend the Wifi, especially considering both these devices (ATV and HomePod) are meant to be in different rooms throughout the house.

I finally got to use ApplePay and I love it!

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 04:55 AM PST

As someone who lives in Australia, the land of killer kangaroos and drop bears, there aren't many options when it comes to ApplePay. Only one of our major banks (ANZ) has implemented ApplePay. Most of the other banks have refused ApplePay, instead implementing their own wireless payment systems - even though many customers have made it aware that they want ApplePay as a payment option.

While my first AP payment was for McDonald's, it was so quick, simple and easy! I was actually expecting it to take a little longer than the 1.5 seconds it took to complete the transaction. The lady behind the counter looked at me as if I were insane for getting so excited.

    Hooray for ApplePay!

My iPhone X went off and won't turn back on, not even to the apple logo anymore, or restore on itunes. Help

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 02:20 PM PST

My phone was acting fine till my taptic feedback stopped working, so i went to settings to fix it but the settings app wouldn't open, it'd just show a white screen, all other apps worked fine, imessages were sending, music was playing etc, but no taptic feedback and no settings app. I restarted it twice, no change. Then it randomly got stuck in a boot loop, and now won't turn on. I tried restoring it through iTunes on both mine, and my flatmate's laptop, and it gives me error code 4041 both times. I spoke to Apple Chat online, and they couldn't fix it and recommended me take it into a store, but they're all closed till tomorrow morning. Anyone got ideas on what happened?

Best method for learning the Apple OS for kids.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 12:07 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

When I learned how to use an Apple way back in the day (Apple IIe days) there was a little piece of software that helped you learn the OS shortcuts, how to save files, a little touch typing etc etc. I am thinking of getting my son (8 years old) an Ipad Pro with a keyboard and would like him to be able to teach him the fundamentals of the OS while keeping it fun.

Anyone have a good experience with software or an app that will do this that would be good for an 8 year old?

    TIA

    iPhone X by Anandtech?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 04:33 AM PST

I occasionally look on their site for the (non-existent) iPhone X review. It seems to me that is not going to come any time soon (ever?). Anyone has some more info on this?

P.s. Yes, I know they usually they their time, but this time it is a bit out of wack. I appreciate them to take time to write things up, but... this is way out of date now.

    Low Power Mode on iPad

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 06:04 PM PST

Hiya! I just wanted to ask why we don't have Low Power Mode available on iPad's. Yes the battery life is already outstanding but imagine how long it could last with Low Power Mode. I am not an expert so I may have missed why we can't have this so if that is that case please let me know!

MX Master 2s Mouse keeps freezing every 10 minutes when AirPods are connected to my 2017 15inch MBP (w/ TB). Please help!

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:11 PM PST

Just picked up some Air Pods to use with my Apple Watch and iPhone and they've been great. But with my MacBook, they've been "okay" at best. My MX Master 2s keeps freezing every 10 minutes or so to what I believe is Bluetooth interference and it is beyond frustrating when your work life centers around a computer. My mouse has never had this issue until I started using the AirPods with my mac. Would hate to use a dongle to use mouse with usb receiver. Can MacBooks not support more than 1 bluetooth device properly?

Does it hold true today that Apple doesn't pay for product placement?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:35 AM PST

I made the mistake of commenting a witty remark about Samsung product placement strategy, that resulted in my most downvoted comment ever.

In the ensuing discussion, I was making the point that Apple doesn't pay for product placement cause they don't need to, but failed to find a fresh source to back this long standing belief of mine. The most recent article I found googling is this BI article from 2012, which itself references an even older (archaic?) 2006 piece from the WaPo.

Is there any recent proof, source or story backing that the "Apple never pays for product placement" narrative is still real for Tim Cooks's Apple?

    Edit: fixed a link.

iPhone connects to WiFi, MacBook says incorrect password

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:02 PM PST

Is this a router issue or a problem with my MacBook? My iPhone 7 Plus connected to the WiFi no problem first try. My MacBook Pro (15 inch retina late-2013), however, will not connect. Most of the time it just tells me that the password is incorrect. A few times it has worked, but told me it could not connect and said to move closer to the router which is literally 15 feet away from me. I have tried a lot of suggestions found in older articles and posts but nothing has helped. Just wondering if there is a simple fix I am overlooking.

NOTE: I am staying at a family members house for a few days to dog sit, so this is not my router. I also do not want to mess with any of the router settings, so if it is indeed a router issue I guess I'm SOL. It's an ATT router if that helps.

iPhone X batter usage and stand by times the same, Apple dragging feet... HELP

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 11:27 AM PST

Hi. I'd like to start this post off with saying this is my 2nd iPhone X and I've tried every level of Apple support and was told the latest person was the highest level of support. He told be that every engineer couldn't figure it out and asked me if I would mind sending logs which I replied yes but I haven't heard a response in a couple days (was usually prompt)

I've tried every "quick fix" ie hard reset, reset network settings, and restore the iPhone, also set up as new.

Basically what the title says I can't go more than 24-48 hours without my usage and stand by times getting locked into the same. The phone works fine otherwise but when this happens there is significant battery drain. All my friends with X's don't have this issue and Apple support said it isn't a known problem. Since this is the 2nd iPhone X this has happened with I have a hunch it is something related to my iCloud account (even though it was fine with my previous 4 iPhones) but I haven't gotten that reciprocated back from Apple support. Everything like background app refresh and fetch mail is off cuz I've always been a battery hawk

Looking for any advice at all
