[Question] Upgraded MacBook from late 2009

If I was able to get a MacBook from then and upgrade the parts in it, would it be usable by today's standards for light usage?

Lifelong Windows user looking to buy a macbook, couple questions!

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 11:34 AM PST

    Hi,

Would really appreciate some input here.

I am a lifelong windows user never owned an apple product but I'm looking for a laptop and I'm not too keen on the Windows offerings like the XPS 13/15, HP Spectre, etc.

I was looking at the 2017 MBP 15" however the price is insane (£2200 w/ apple care and discount code applied) and there's a refresh coming in June. Spending this kind of money when there's a newer version round the corner would hurt.

So I took a look at the 2015 MBP 15" and it's listed at £1600 on the refurb store (apple say they're getting rid of old stock?) and it looks decent. Can anyone recommend this? It's 16GB Ram 256GB SSD. I'll have it connected up to two monitors, be running slack, spotify, multiple browsers/tabs, a few RDPs, nothing suuuper intensive but need decent RAM.

I'm stuck what to do at the moment, stuck in analysis paralysis. Would really appreciate some input.

    Thanks!

    Macbook Air Questions.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 09:35 AM PST

I recently decided to purchase the cheapest Macbook Air (128 gb ssd) for $750, via the President's day sale from Best Buy. I've been wanting one for a while and finally the price was right. My question is - did I make the right purchase?

What I plan to use this laptop for is mainly school, so microsoft office / google docs. But also I like to do stuff in Photoshop and Sony Vegas 15. I'm also trying to learn Adobe Premiere / Adobe After Affects.

My question is - will this laptop be able to handle running programs like that?

Disappointed in Radeon Pro 560 performance

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 06:39 AM PST

Hi, I have recently bought MBP 2017 with Radeon Pro 560 GPU. I expected it to be almost as fast as Desktop AMD Rx 560. However, it cannot run Serious Sam 3: BFE (Mac version) - an old game - smoothly. Sometimes the fps dropped below 30fps.

When I benchmarked it with GeekBench (OpenCL), the score was only 43k - 45k. Even the old Radeon Pro 460 (MBP 2016 version) has 50k score. It doesn't make any sense.
Looked at some existing benchmark, seems the 43-45k OpenCL score is normal for 560 card in MBP. But I also saw some benchmarks achieving 56k score, they have the same specs as mine. That also doesn't make any sense either.

Anyone tried benchmark MBP with GeekBench OpenCL? What are your scores?

Also anyone having Radeon Pro 460 version, what is your fps when playing Serious Sam 3? I heard that the 460 GPU in 2016 MBP has better performance than 560 card in 2017 version, which is ridiculous, makes me question myself, why did I spend 100$ more to purchase 560 GPU instead of 555.

    Replacement MacBook

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:03 AM PST

Hi guys. I've jumped over from /r/computertechs to pose an inquiry: I have MC516LL/A (White) 2.40Ghz that's running a 860Pro Samsung SSD & 8GB RAM running High Sierra. I use this as a tool out in the field as it's always a conversation starter that leads to what I do: resurrect old Mac data and simple upgrades to older Macs. Now, my Macbook is getting worn out and I need to replace it and would like to know: what's the most powerful (processor-wise) White Macbook that Apple made? Thanks!

    External HD

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:00 AM PST

I recently upgraded to a 2017 MBP and I am looking for a fast decently priced external HD. My other idea is to buy one that I can network using my router (Netgear Nighthawk) and then set it up so I can access it both Home and away ( not really sure how to do the second part but I'm sure I can learn) and advice as to brand and or model I would appreciate. Oh and 1tb+ only

What to check when purchasing a new Macbook Pro 2017

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:53 AM PST

Story: I'll be purchasing the brand new sealed Macbook Pro 2017 from Person A (person A offers way cheaper than in Apple store because the unit is bought overseas, no gov tax). But person A is not an Authorized dealer from Apple.

Question: 1. What do I have to check on the Macbook Pro when I meet with Person A? warranty?
