Assessing severity of water damage - Logic board or battery? Posted: 17 Feb 2018 09:44 PM PST I bought my mom a MacBook Pro 2014 a few years ago and turns out during that time frame she spilled some liquid on it. The MacBook works completely fine, as long as it's plugged into the magsafe. The charge light even turns on so she leaves it plugged in all the time. When you unplug the magsafe it shuts off. Is the underlying cause a battery issue or logic board? If so, is it possible to repair it if it's a logic board? I hope I just have to get her a new battery.. [link] [comments] |
Why do I have to force quit every application I open on my MacBook Air? Posted: 17 Feb 2018 06:43 PM PST Details: -we got it straight from Apple -macOS high Sierra -if I open an application, I have to force quit it for it to really close -it's been like this since we bought it Is this normal for Macs? This is my first Apple computer, so I haven't a clue. Also, airdrop isn't working between my phone and Mac anymore. This used to work, now it's not. Is it because I haven't updated my iphone? I've tried everything else. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Feb 2018 12:54 PM PST I back up my photos on iCloud but also on a hard drive. I've just plugged my phone into my Mac to transfer the files over and when I open the Photos app on my computer I can see HUNDREDS of photos that I deleted on my phone months ago. My deleted photos album is completely empty. How are they showing up?! It's so many screenshots and other crappy photos I don't want or need. I don't want to spend time going through and deleting them AGAIN I've already done it once! Why is this happening? [link] [comments] |
Safari doesn’t load. Chrome does. Posted: 17 Feb 2018 05:57 PM PST My issue is every time I'm at home, safari doesn't load anything (iOS and OS X). I am completely updated on both my 7+ and 2016 mbp. But if I browse in google chrome everything loads fine. By not loading I mean the blue bar never reaches the halfway point. It just hangs. If anyone has been through this your advice would be appreciated. Also, using win 10 on my pc,I browse fine on edge and chrome. [link] [comments] |
Possible to get 1440p from a 2012 Mac Mini via mini DP -> HDMI adapter? Posted: 17 Feb 2018 09:42 PM PST I recently purchased a 2012 Mac Mini and am attempting to max out my dual monitor setup. Currently, I connect my Mac to a Dell S2417DG's HDMI 1.4 in via this passive mini DP to HDMI 1.4 cable. According to the specifications, 1440p should be possible, yet macOS only offers a 1080p maximum in System Preferences > Displays. After some exploration, I found and applied this patch, which made a 2560 x 1440 resolution available in Displays. Enabling this resolution, however, doesn't work, and the monitor indicates that there is no longer an input signal. I have also tried setting up 1440p via SwitchResX and verified that all timings are correct according to the monitor manual, but when I apply the custom resolution, the display stays in 1080p mode. Is it possible to achieve 1440p via mDP -> HDMI on a 2012 Mac Mini? I am running High Sierra (10.13.3). I am aware that a working solution would be to use mDP -> DisplayPort, but my gaming PC takes up the DP slot for 1440p@165hz. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Feb 2018 08:33 PM PST Shot in the dark call for help before I buy a new router: Sequence of events: 1. Set up new modem (Netgear CM500) in place of previous Comcast leased model. 2. Connected direct modem:computer (desktop PC). Wife is an Apple user (macbook, ipad, iphone all used to connect to wireless previously). Internet connection was fine. 3. Tried connecting Airport Extreme via hub. No connection. 4. Checked settings. Was in Off (Bridge Mode). Changed to DHCP/NAT. 5. Something happened because it showed wireless network as "Connected, No Internet" on all devices. 6. Status errors on Airport Utility were "Internet Connection" and "DNS Servers" 7. Looked up articles and changed the DNS to Google Publics. 8. That took care of DNS, but not Internet Connection. 9. It states no IP Address despite it clearly showing one in the utility. 10. I have reset to factory defaults several times and tried creating a brand new network. 11. I give up. 12. Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi. Thank you, [link] [comments] |

Help with restoring disabled iPhone + series of unfortunate events Posted: 17 Feb 2018 06:44 PM PST So today a friend got my phone and used up most of my attempts as a joke. Problem is, I had two attempts left with 15-60 minute waits. I, as expected, choked and entered my password wrong. As a result, now my iphone is disabled. I thought, oh well, I'll just restore from iCloud, right? wrong. For some reason, even though my iCloud was supposed to be backing up every night, my iCloud (that I'm accessing from my PC) is empty save for a few random files. I have 4.99 GB left out of 5. I have no clue why I have no back-ups and why my iCloud is empty. I have local back-ups on my PC but they are very old and I have lots of photos that I absolutely need. I have 1000's of videos and photos that I can't afford to lose, as well as other app data. My question is, can I somehow recover my data? Any third-party apps? Any other tricks? Is there absolutely ANYTHING i can do and don't underestimate my desperation. I want all my options laid out in front of me. I've watched some youtube videos/read some articles but most of those look really sketch. Oh, and please no YoU SHouLd HaVe BACkeD uP, the past is gone and I can't change it. Thank you so much. Why is the iPad cheaper than the iPhone at the Apple Store? Posted: 17 Feb 2018 11:10 AM PST In Toronto the price for a brand new ipad is $449, while an iphone 7 is $739. I'm pretty sure it costs more to make an iPad. [link] [comments] |
Corrupted MacBook Air profile? Posted: 17 Feb 2018 02:52 PM PST Hi everyone. My girlfriend's old (It's a Mid-2011) MacBook Air is having a weird issue where, when she attempts to log into her main user profile, instead of booting to the desktop, it pulls up the Guest profile's log-in entry prompt (yet you can just barely see her main profile's background in the back with a white overlay over it). At one point, I was able to reboot back to a "Forgot Apple ID or Password" screen, but it hasn't really gotten me anywhere. I walked into the Apple store this afternoon, and while I couldn't get in with a Genius rep to really dig into it all, their version of a Genius consultation person said it's a corrupted profile, and that they'll have to clear that profile off the MacBook and create a new one. My girlfriend is in grad school and has important docs saved on the MacBook Air (yes, I know, she should've saved elsewhere, used the Cloud, etc.), so I was wondering if there is ANY way to access these files and move them to another profile, or fix the issue altogether? I don't especially consider myself super tech savvy when it comes to this stuff, so don't be afraid to talk dumb to me haha. Thank you all so much! [link] [comments] |
[IOS] iPad Air Gen 1 Continuously Crashing Posted: 17 Feb 2018 12:36 PM PST Basic troubleshooting steps have been made. Reset all settings, then reset to factory default, the used iTunes to force reinstall ios, nothing has worked. Running ios 11.2.5. Not jail broken, clean device. Already contacted apple support, and they said I need a new battery, which doesn't make sense because it lasts as long as it usually had been. iPad will crash after being on for about a minute to 3 minutes, and sometimes wont crash at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Feb 2018 06:16 PM PST This has been like this since I first got IOS 11, still has not been fixed. I have not found anyone else with this problem. Just in case it helps, the [?] right next to where I put my Apple ID password is unresponsive as well. [link] [comments] |

Powerbeats 3 worst than powerbeats 2? Posted: 17 Feb 2018 02:09 PM PST So I was a happy owner of a pair of powerbeats 2 earphones. In my opinion they sound amazing as far as Bluetooth earphones go: high volume, nice isolation and decent bass. Due to the fact that I need a second pair of earphones (due to my life logistics) I aquired the powerbeats 3 thinking - "no where but up" in terms of quality. Truth is they are worse, they are not nearly as loud as the 2's and dont isolate as well even changing the "tips". Hell... even the range of the Bluetooth isn't significantly better. I've tried them both in my samsung s8 (spotify and storage musics) and my ipod nano (last gen). The results are the same, the powerbeats 2 are perfect in both devices and the powerbeats 3 sound shitty like some offbrand cheap pair of earphones. I've reset them multiple times and tried the diferent tips for isolation, but it's always shitty. I'm pretty bummed :(. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Feb 2018 01:52 PM PST I'm running Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.3 on a 2017 MacBook Pro. I installed a program called 'Mendeley Desktop' from a .dmg file that I downloaded, which works perfectly. Now, whenever I try to install other programs from .dmg files, a desktop icon for a drive entitled 'Mendeley Desktop' is created, regardless of the name of the software that I am trying to install. When I click on this, a window appears where the program I want to install (currently, VLC media player) can be dragged into the 'Applications' folder. However, when I drag the folder, I get an 'Error 43' message. I am new to Mac OS, so apologies if there is a simple solution to this that I am unaware of. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
IPhone 6s can’t make or receive calls except over Wi-Fi Posted: 17 Feb 2018 01:39 PM PST Hey guys, so I currently use an iPhone 6s that I purchased roughly one year ago, currently running IOS 11.2.5. My carrier is Sprint. Other than a tiny crack in the lower left hand corner, it's in pristine condition. I have been having a ton of issues recently with my coverage. I can't make phone calls or send texts unless I have a WiFi connection, and when I am off of WiFi I seem to only have 1x or an unuseable 3G connection...never LTE like I used to have at home. I live with four other people using Sprint and nobody has any issues except me. I currently can't use my Maps GPS, Spotify, etc. unless I'm connected to WiFi. It takes hours for me to send non-iMessages and once or twice a day I'll get a bunch of text messages from non-iPhone users/green group messages. When I call non-iPhone users my call gets dropped almost immediately....currently hating this very expensive paper weight. Any ideas on what's going on? Any other information you want me to provide? Can't add email account on iPhone 7+ Posted: 17 Feb 2018 08:21 AM PST First the email app prompted me to re-enter my password. I did and logged in successfully in settings. I would go to mail and it would happen (did this 5 or 6 times) decided to delete the email account and re add it with the following steps. "Go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords and tap Add Account. If you're using iOS 10.3.3 or earlier, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts and tap Add Account. Tap your email provider. If you don't see your email provider, tap Other to add your account manually. Enter your email address and password. Tap Next and wait for Mail to verify your account. Choose information from your email account, like Contacts or Calendars, that you want to see on your device." At this point I would be moved right back to the screen where you select your email provider. Went through that cycle multiple times too. I like logged in to my account on my computer to make sure I had my password right and I had an email that said I successfully logged in on an iOS device but my account still is not linked. iPhone 7+ iOS 10.3.2 [link] [comments] |
iCloud contacts not syncing to new MacBook Pro Posted: 17 Feb 2018 05:02 PM PST Everything else from my iCloud has transferred over but for some reason Contacts aren't coming through and it's driving me crazy. I updated the OS to High Sierra and still nothing. Anyone know what to do? [link] [comments] |
Backing up my iPhoto library: copy the library file itself or copy the individual photos? Posted: 17 Feb 2018 05:34 AM PST Hopefully my question makes sense! I want to start making regular backups of my iPhoto library to external hard drives, cloud, etc. Is the best way to do that just to make a copy of my "library" file or by copying and pasting all of my individual photos and videos (e.g. select all and copy and paste). Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |

Vomited on Macbook Pro, powers up but screen has liquid damage + stench Posted: 17 Feb 2018 12:19 PM PST To preface, I am 100% to blame for this snafu; most expensive bottle of rosé in my life, I am an imbecile, live and learn, oh holy mother of god my laptop smells like cat food. I am in the UK, wondering if apple stores will accept vomited upon laptops for servicing, & if there's any chance I can resell to make back some money for a replacement? [link] [comments] |
Preventing Finder from mass opening Posted: 17 Feb 2018 04:01 PM PST If I have say 10 files selected in Finder and double click on one of them, all 10 of them will be opened. How do I prevent this behavior? I just had a lot of files selected to delete, and accidentally double clicked and locked my Mac while it tried to open every single thing in my download folder. Edit: for macOS Sierra 10.12.3 [link] [comments] |
