80gb of "Other volumes in container"? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:57 PM PST Howdy, I was just trying to setup bootcamp, and my 2017 MacBook Pro froze, and shut down. Upon starting it back up, I tried to go through the process again and it says I don't have enough space to make a new partition, so I checked my storage and here is what it shows It looks like the 80gb I tried to initially allocate to my new partition is now just clarified as "other volumes in container" and I don't know how to reclaim it, any ideas? iwatch 1 recently got water damage and won’t hold a charge Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:25 PM PST So a while ago, maybe early January or so I cracked the face of my watch but it has always worked regardless. A couple of days ago it got water damaged and I thought it was fine at first. After restarting it and drying it the best I could it was still not working right. There is a small dark circle near the top of the screen by one of the most noticeable cracks. It makes it impossible to read anything on that part of the screen. I can't put in my passcode or even disable it, only vaguely see the time. I can't even tap on the screen and get any reaction. I even stuck it in a bag of rice for a day and nothing changed. I charged it up but it lost the charge within a couple hours of not being used. It is still under warranty but I don't have Apple care for it. Is there anything I can do or is my only option to buy a new iwatch? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:25 PM PST Hi, for one of my courses this semester I have a professor who puts all our worksheets in his Google Drive. Up to this point I've been printing them out and writing on them with a pen then taking a picture to turn them in. I tried to find a way to save the files somewhere and then open them up in Notability or even Pages but I can't figure it out. Is this something that is possible? I would like to just do everything from my iPad. Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Official repair or unauthorised? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:05 PM PST I damaged my MacBook Pro recently. It has grey lines across the screen and sometimes other coloured lines vertically across as well. I called my local authorised repair centre and they said they'll charge me S$130 for evaluation fee and S$600-S$800 for the actual repair, says it's possibly a crack in the screen. This price isn't exactly ridiculous but I was curious if anyone here found some third party to repair their device and done a decent job at a better price. Or is it much safer to pay the price and give it to the official guys. Device is MacBook Pro 13' with Touchbar 2016. Living currently in Singapore. [link] [comments] |
Computer keeps freezing and nothing has helped so far Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:53 PM PST I have an old MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and it keeps freezing where I get the spinning wheel and can't do anything so I have to power it down. Originally it seemed to occur when I was using Firefox, so I figured it was using up too much CPU or something, but then it happened with Safari and Quicktime. Now it seems to only last a few minutes before the spinning wheel shows up and for awhile it was freezing at the Apple logo when first booting up. I did rebuild with DiskWarrior, ran Disk Utility a few times from the Snow Leopard CD which said the volume was OK, ran the Apple Hardware Test including the extended test which didn't find any problems, and now I'm out of ideas for what to do. The most recent time it froze when I pressed the space bar to preview a picture maybe 3-4 minutes after booting. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
‘An unknown error has occurred’ Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:34 PM PST I get a pop up on my 2016 MBPtB to enter my password in for my iCloud account, I press ok and it brings me to the iCloud settings screen. I put in the password and get an error in red saying 'An unknown error occurred'. This has happened for a few days, can't seem to get anything for iCloud to work now because of this. Any ideas? Signed into iCloud and it deleted some contacts Posted: 18 Feb 2018 01:22 PM PST Hi. I have an iPad and iPhone. I was signed into iCloud on the iPad but not on the phone. But they're both under the same appleid. So I signed into iCloud on my phone and it said it would merge the contacts. So I thought it would take the new contacts on the phone and save them to the iCloud and thus add them to the iPad. So I signed into iCloud on my phone thinking the contacts would go from my phone to my iPad and sync them both up. But it appears to have gone the other way, it's basically taken what's on my iPad and put it on my phone. Is there a way I can undo what iCloud did on my phone? My last backup was 3 months ago. :/ [link] [comments] |
Is using a 2011 MBP still sensible or can I get something better for cheaper nowadays? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 06:31 PM PST I've used one of my family member's old Macbook Pro for a tad over two years now. It is the 13" early 2011 model on 10.13.2 High Sierra. I'm conflicted on whether it makes sense to still keep using this machine. There are many good sides. The build quality is still top-notch. I particularly love the touchpad and the keyboard and I'm fairly sure getting this kind of hardware from a budget device would be very hard. The i5 processor is good on paper at least, even though it is a good amount of generations behind now. The connections on this laptop are generally nice - Ethernet, MagSafe, lots of USB-2, headphone jack and a CD-Drive (!). OS X isn't a big deal for me - I'm not at all in the Apple ecosystem and don't use any Apple services. Now for the bad. The Screen The resolution here is 1200 x 800 - smaller than my $50 tablet. You can definitely notice pixelation, and the amount of stuff that you can have on the screen is pretty limited - no multi-tasking. I also don't like to read scientific papers or other longer texts on it due to the low pixel density, which is a bit of a bummer. Furthermore, the contrast seems a bit lacking particularly in dim or dark screen conditions - not sure what is going on here. The Performance This thing is intensely slow. On a fast day, opening Firefox or Microsoft Office can take 2-4 minutes easily, switching between applications (e.g. text editor) often 10 - 15 seconds and opening new tabs 5 - 15 seconds. On a slow day, these figures are easily doubled and the computer can just freeze up trying to open the music player. I am not sure whether this is something that I should be expecting - does anyone else here use a MBP 2011 who could share their experience? Battery At 1327 charge cycles, this thing gets about 1 hour of battery life when watching youtube or browsing the web semi-intensively (the system reports that the battery is still functioning normally, i.e. not requiring servicing). Thus I use it almost exclusively as a keep-at-home machine. The Hard Drive While not a biggie, the hard disk on this thing does get loud as anything. It is a bit full due to bad file management - about 30 GB left of 320 - can this affect performance? Is it worth for me to keep going with this machine or can I get something better? I have a budget of something around £300 - £400; essentially looking for a basic machine that is more responsive during day-to-day activities (web browsing, writing stuff in Office, casual coding, movies and music etc.) and doesn't freeze up as much. I would also appreciate more screen real estate, though given I enjoy the 13" form factor not sure how much there is to be done here. Or is there anything that I could do to make my current machine run faster? Thanks in advance for any and all information, experiences and opinions! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:25 PM PST Background:
and...it died again 3 days ago. I found a temporary fix on macrumors* to disable the dGPU, and it is back to life now. Just wondering if there is a better solution to this issue??? *shout out to AppleMacFinder in macrumors for the fix, the world needs more heroes like you [link] [comments] |
Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad aren’t responsive on Mac mini after software update Posted: 18 Feb 2018 06:21 PM PST I've been trying to solve an issue with my dads Mac mini for a couple days now. He says he updated the software and now the keyboard and trackpad rarely work (<5% of the time before cutting out again) and when they do it's very laggy. I'm now unable to even wake up the mini mac to log in and look myself. The only thing I was able to do to possibly help was turning it off and on but that was unsuccessful. [link] [comments] |
What is going on with my iPhone 7? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 10:47 AM PST I don't know how to describe it so I just recorded a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ1MLZ2g8uo&feature=youtu.be It's been doing that for like half an hour so far. I already tried resetting it with the power+volume button but it didn't work. It just keeps doing this. I wasn't even using it, but it randomly put up my passcode screen. Put in my passcode, and it goes to that loading screen after a second. It just keeps going to that loading screen every second for some reason. [link] [comments] |
Apple News app disappears every few days. Reappears upon reboot. Anyone know why? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:39 AM PST Once a week for the past 2 months or so, my Apple News app disappears. News articles still appear in the widget panel, but when I click them it takes me to the article in Safari. If I reboot my phone, the News app reappears where it was before and works normally. Has anyone seen this issue or know why this happens? I have a hunch that this happens when I got into zones of no service (e.g. the subway) but haven't nailed down the cause. Any help or insights are appreciated. This is on an iPhone6S running iOS 11.2.2 [link] [comments] |
Cannot erase content of iPad 2 Posted: 18 Feb 2018 04:21 PM PST I apologize in advance, I haven't really messed around with any sort of Mac/Apple device before today. I'm trying to help my dad factory reset his old iPad 2 he used to use for work (that he is currently locked out of as of mid-September 2017) as his new one got smashed in a fight with another family member. I followed some how-to videos and removed it from his account/erased the content of the iPad. Only problem is, he no longer has the service provider (Verizon) that he had set up on the iPad and has since changed internet providers so it won't automatically connect to the internet to rest the tablet. He's going to head to a friend's house in a few hours because the tablet should automatically connect to that. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
“Downloading” icon in photos whilst trying to edit... Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:16 PM PST Every time I click edit on a photo I've taken on my iPhone I am faced with the 'downloading' icon/wording. Does anybody know why this is? It doesn't change and the image is clearly already on the device. I've also noticed very slow syncing times with photos across my apple devices. My iPad and MacBook can take hours to catch up with a few new photos taken on my phone. This is becoming somewhat frustrating. All I've found online is to turn iCloud photos on and off on my devices. I've done this numerous times to no effect. Does anybody else have this issue and if so, could you please share some insight/understanding to the problem? A solution would be ideal! Thanks guys, Alex. [link] [comments] |
Help with cellular radio resetting. Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:54 PM PST So this started several months ago but has gotten progressively worse. My cellular radio appears to be resetting every few seconds making it impossible to use GPS, make calls, send texts, ECT. I've tried replacing the sim card, turning the phone off and back on, resetting network settings, turning airplane mode off and on, turning cellular data LTE to data only and even off and nothing seems to resolve the issue. When I look at Settings->General->About when this is going on, my carrier shows "unknown". This problem is not constant but intermittent but when it starts, it can go on for hours up to days. The screenshot in the link below shows what the signal bars are doing and were taken approximately 2 seconds apart. This will just repeat over and over again and seems independent of the area I'm in. Any thoughts on what may be going on? Btw, the phone has been in a hard case since I got it so there shouldn't be any physical damage to the phone (though it has been dropped 2-3 times). The problem also occurs when the phone is out of the case. It's an iPhone 6S. [link] [comments] |
iTunes playback issue after media folder migration to SSD Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:43 AM PST I recently migrated my iTunes library to a new SSD and directed the App to pull media from that folder, but there's this strange issue: songs appear where they used to be (in playlists and in the 'songs' view) but they have a little question mark in the column they're listed. When I click on the track to play it, I get a dialog that tells me iTunes can't find the song, and do I want to "locate it". Locating it is a hassle, so I just click 'cancel', at which point the track magically loads and starts playing. Why is this happening?? Does this mean I need to do this track by track? That's a lot of data entry. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I can only hear calls on speakerphone Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:39 PM PST this is on an iPhone 6 with iOS 11 for the past couple days, the other line is silent unless i'm on speakerphone. no idea what triggered this. a hard reset didn't do anything, restoring original settings didn't do anything, and i'd prefer not to restore to factory settings if i don't have to. any idea? backupd is having a major memory leak Posted: 18 Feb 2018 02:14 PM PST I noticed that backupd is taking up an insane amount of memory. When it first starts it just keeps using more and more memory until eventually it plateaus. Then it goes back down and does it again. What's going on? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Feb 2018 02:07 PM PST So this morning I was given an iPhone 5s by my girlfriend's mom . She said she had no problems with it before she upgraded a while back and that it was just sitting in a drawer . However , I've been charging it all day , tried force restart , dfu , and all that jazz . Still at a black screen. I can feel some heat on the back . It would be much appreciated if someone helped me figure this out . [link] [comments] |
Multiple Issues After Updating to High Sierra Posted: 18 Feb 2018 02:04 PM PST Basically, since updating to High Sierra I've had a couple of massive problems that are more-or-less rendering my machine useless.
For example, when I load a website up - or anything for that matter - it will load up in stages. As I type this right now, the panel is tripping out for whatever reason. The best way that I can explain this is tripping? I understand that this will be hard to remedy given that you can't see anything to help me with, but I'm just here out of hope really.
If you could give me any help that would be great. [link] [comments] |
Best way to upgrade ram in Late 2013 Mac Pro Posted: 18 Feb 2018 02:02 PM PST Hi guys, Just got my mac pro back from the apple store, and i'm down to 2x4gb ram now, which is just too weak. So i'm going to buy 2x8gb ram, so that i have room to upgrade if i want to again.. My question is, is it better to have 2x8gb by itself, or 2x8gb and 2x4gb together.. i know mixed ram isn't ideal, but wasn't sure if this was the case on the mac pro, because i thought it processes ram a bit differently to other machines [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Feb 2018 08:58 AM PST Unsure if I'm in the right place, so I apologize in advance if I'm not. I have a MacBook Pro 15" from mid-2012 and my poor, loyal fossil is starting to have problems I can't fix on my own or continue to brush aside. My current problem is temporarily fixed, but I'm afraid it will return or that something worse will come up. I contacted a Mac-savvy friend who serves as the resident tech guru for our college department and he suggested buying a used laptop from Swappa (as I am an extremely broke graduate student/part-time college instructor). The older models are obviously cheaper, but I'm afraid it's a bad investment if they will just start to crap out like my current one. I have at least 4 more years before I'm done with school, so it's preferable that I have a laptop that could remain mostly functional for that long if possible. My question is this: is it worth paying more for a newer model in the hopes it will last longer? Or am I okay to opt for the less expensive but older models? [link] [comments] |
Update to El Captain from 10.9.5 Posted: 18 Feb 2018 08:43 AM PST So I was on Sierra when I wanted to upgrade to high sierra, but it was so slow for my MacBook pro mid 2012 non-retina. So I erased my HDD and used internet recovery to install OS version that shipped with my device, and now I want to update to El Captain or least to sierra, bit the problem is that I get error when trying to install El captain from the app store: "This version of OS X 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer ", any help? Apple Cinema display 27 distortion issue Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:35 AM PST The distortion seen above only appears after the monitor has been turned on for 30min-1hr. Only visible on grey backgrounds or light-coloured backgrounds like sky-blue. What's causing it? Is it fixable? Worth taking to the Apple store? [link] [comments] |
