PSA avoid /r/imgoingtohellforthis if on iOS, they’re apparently using the crashing Indian character in titles

They must've upvoted something pretty high in /r/all as well, it's just crashing my iPad and iPhone any time I scroll down.

    Hope a hotfix comes today.

MKBHD's review of the HomePod has just gone live - 'The Dumbest Smart Speaker?'

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 02:52 PM PST

    Video here.

Not sure why his review was delayed, I am not sure that he got a review unit. High production values as ever. Main outcomes are similar to most other reviews - great sound, mediocre Siri.

The iPhone X is amazing - I finally caved in and upgraded from the 7

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 05:50 AM PST

I was determined to wait it out for another year, with my 7, but I got a good deal from my mobile operator for an iPhone X.

I knew every spec and difference between the 7 and X, I even handled an X in a Apple shop. So I thought I knew what to expect. But now after a few days of owning the iPhone X I keep marveling at this amazing piece of tech.

    1) The screen is AMAZING. Using Apollo at night with the deep blacks is such a pleasure, that I prefer it to my iPad Pro :) The notch doesn't bother me at all in portrait mode. I would maybe prefer the screen to be a bit wider and keep the same height.

    2) The build quality makes the old iPhone feel like a plastic toy. I am surrounded by colleagues who are Android fans and they have high-end Android devices, but every one of them was impressed with the build quality of the X (and of the screen).

    3) Face ID: I expected to hate this feature. Whenever I read accounts from other people who said they prefer it to the Touch ID I thought they were just rationalizing their purchase. But here goes: I prefer it to the Touch ID. I love the feature with the hidden notifications until Face ID recognizes you and then you can simply select the notification you want to open directly.

    4) The camera: I'm not a photo-nerd, but the iPhone is my only camera. So I appreciate any upgrade there as well - even if I don't have the eye to notice it myself.

    5) Animoji - they are more fun than I expected, but it's a novelty I'll probably use twice more in my life.

    6) CPU & GPU: I don't game much, I didn't notice any difference to the 7 tbh. There are still some hiccups in iOS 11, which I thought would be gone, but they aren't... But these will be ironed out... eventually.

TLDR: The screen & Face IDs are such a big upgrade, that they alone make this upgrade worth it.

Albums in Apple Music vs. Spotify

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 09:30 AM PST

Ed Sheeran's albums in Apple music: http://benjaminmayo.co.uk/images/81.jpg

    And in Spotify: http://benjaminmayo.co.uk/images/82.jpg

edit:These photos were taken from a blog post I linked to in the comments (http://benjaminmayo.co.uk/apple-music-first-impressions ). The author believes Apple Music's Album management is a bit confusing. I thought the the photos comparing spotify and Apple music album organization were pretty interesting and wondered if anyone preferred one over the other!

    Help understanding photos and iCloud

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 09:29 PM PST

I've had a MacBook for 5 years, iPhone for 10+ years. I'm familiar with pretty much everything except when it comes to the photos and iCloud. I'm familiar with I cloud and how it works. The trouble I'm having is figuring out what settings to leave on/off to reach my desired objective.

If photostream is on, it pushes all these photos to my iPad and MacBook. My question is, if I take a photo on iPhone, it moves to MacBook, does it automatically save? If I delete it from my phone will the photo delete from my MacBook? I don't want to use iCloud and have them backed up on their servers, I just want them backed up on my Mac. Is photostream what I'm looking for? Or is it easier to turn all that off and manually transfer my photos from iPhone to Mac via usb?

I've fiddled around with this and taken photos and waited for them to pop up on my Mac and it's still completely lost on me. Sometimes I think they are saved and other times the photos will disappear.

Someone try and clear this up please!

Losing my AirPods has only made me love them more.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 09:40 AM PST

I lost them 2 days ago, so I still have some hope of finding them. In their abscence, I was thinking about buying new headphones and I realized I would never be able to go back to wired ones because the AirPods are so, so, so, so much better. 💔💔💔 I pray I find my AirPods or they find a new loving home.

Why does apple say not to use compressed air to clean your iPhone 7?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 11:26 PM PST

I've used it twice but stopped because I noticed that they said it was not recommended; is there a reason why compressed air is a bad idea?

Successor to the MacBook Air any time soon?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 06:06 PM PST

I'm currently running a mid-2013 MacBook air that I specced up when I first bought it so the performance is still great. However, the screen wasn't outstanding in 2013 and it is more than showing it's age now. I often find myself trying to up the brightness only to find it's already maxed out.

But right now I don't see any clear option to buy? The MacBook's 12 inch screen is just too small and the MacBook Pro 13 inch despite being rather overpriced (or underspecced - 128GB SSD at the base model price is insane, no?) seems to be plagued by Keyboard failures. Reliability and build quality to the extent that it seems indestructible is the number one thing I appreciate in my MacBook Air. I simply can't accept having to be paranoid that they keyboard of all things might fail on such an expensive machine if I am not excessively careful and even then I've read that the failures sometimes happen for no reason at all. I eat around my Air all the time and carry it around without a case without fear. I cant imagine going backwards in exchange for more money.

So does anyone know if there might be a true Air successor soon? Either a 13 inch MacBook, a new Air or a MacBook Pro preferably with a less exploitative price and revamped keyboard?

I love OSX but the Window's market leaders have come a long way since 2013. If there is nothing to wait for I might make the switch and hope that Apple has a decent line up a few years down the line.
