    Logitech T651 having issues

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 12:21 AM PST

I have a Logitech T651 trackpad on a 2012 Mac mini that was working fine up until about a month ago. Since then, none of the three or four finger gestures are working. I have tried rebooting both computer and the trackpad. I have unpaired and repaired the trackpad. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Logitech options software.

I'm at a total loss now. I messaged Logitech but have gotten no reply. I don't want to have to buy a whole new Apple trackpad (mostly just due to cost, I'd love to have one but can't afford it right now) just for gestures to work again.

Icons keep disappearing, even after clean install. [High Sierra]

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 02:44 PM PST

When I updated from Sierra to High Sierra my programs icons keep disappearing and replaced with a 'missing icon' icon. This makes using my Macbook really hard since I have no idea which icon represents which program in the dock. Besides the Dock, I get this in the Applications folder as well. Even newly installed programs will at one time just lose their icon. They sometimes reappear (and then disappear again).

This problem persists, even after a clean install of high sierra. Have no idea what to do. Can't find any related issues. Any help?

For those skeptical about upgrading their Mac to High Sierra... Fear Not!

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 11:20 AM PST

Hey all! I'm sure that someone else has posted something similar in here, but I figured that the more validation people see about the upgrade, the more likely they'll be to bit the bullet. A few notes before we continue:

1: I 100% recommend a CLEAN INSTALL. ALWAYS. If you can avoid it, I recommend never "upgrading" through the app.

2: These are just my personal experiences and the experiences of my friend's computers that I have upgraded.

    3: Computers used: Late 2013 MBP "15, Mid 2012 MBP 13", Late 2011 MBP 13"

    Ok, here we go.

So, I myself held off on the upgrade until this month for several reasons. First of all, I always wait a few months for the general bugfixes and security issues to be ironed before ever upgrading to a new OS. I'm especially happy I did in this case because of all these new Intel vulnerabilities, coupled with the now infamous "root bug" (Yikes...). I'm also a designer and web developer, so I had to ensure that my development environment is up to the task of my daily grind. I was having several issues on Sierra. On of my biggest hardships in Sierra was poor battery life, some odd crashes back to the login screen while using certain applications, and a few other oddities. I decided "fuck it, let's give it a go." I fired up the command line and made an installer USB. If you'd like to know how to do this, the information is HERE:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

First, my observations on my personal machine. Since upgrading I have observed a lot to be happy with, especially as a power user. My favorite thing is my increased battery life. When doing general web browsing with not a whole lot open, I'm easily getting 1 or 2 more hours. When doing more intensive tasks, I'm still noticing much less rapid drain. Aple has clearly done a ton of optimization on the backend, and this is my number one reason to recommend the upgrade. More good news, though APFS (Apple's new file system, for any newbies out there) is still in its infancy, I am EXTREMELY impressed with its performance. Unfortunately for those of you with earlier macs, this will be a feature you miss because as of time of writing, APFS only supports Macs using SSD drives. If you DO have an SSD, the biggest and most pleasing feature about the new file system for me is the duplication of files. The way the new file system handles this is actually quite ingenious (readers please correct me if I butcher my following statements, as they are just what I have read online). Instead of duplicating the full directory bit by bit, the file system automatically just references the originals and creates clones that don't take up excess hard drive space. This is a LIFESAVER for someone who is copying similar files between projects. I think this is definitely one of the cooler features of the filesystem. Another dope thing is the full disk encryption for all you privacy nuts out there. HFS+ also had encryption, but APFS provides faster and stronger encryption from what I have read. In terms of all the miscellaneous app features, I could honestly give a fuck less about them, for me what I care about is performance. Let me be clear: High Sierra is a PERFORMANCE upgrade. Don't expect lots of bells and whistles. As a developer and power user, aside from the rough launch, I think the upgrade was worth it for me. I will update this post if that changes.

On both of the earlier MBPs, my friends were on Yosemite and El Capitan respectively. Neither of them are power users, but I'm happy to say that both of them have provided me with similar reports performance wise. Slightly more battery, and their systems are running better than before. Keep in mind this is partially an effect of doing a clean install, and non-technical users are not the best source to judge an OS release on, but I'm happy that they are happy.

TL;DR: With all the bugfixes and security updates installed, the backend updates to the operation and function of macOS is well worth the upgrade. If you're running a new mac expect better battery life and more efficient/fast file system performance.

    Cheers!

Is displayport 1.2 MST monitors daisy-chaining still unsupported?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:32 PM PST

I'm thinking about buying a second Dell U2414H, which supports MST, but I'm afraid that it will not be able to work with Mac OS High Sierra. Is MST still unsupported?

I'm using Macbook Air Early 2015, with only one thunderbolt and it looks like a good way to connect second display

Macbook Pro 2017 High Sierra 10.3.2 iTunes Lag

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:37 PM PST

I recently upgraded from a Late 2011 Macbook Pro to the 2017 n-TB 256gb version and although there have been some inconviences, it`s overall a nice laptop to have. One thing that Ive noticed recently as of updating is that after opening iTunes and choosing a song to play, there is a like 2-3 second lag and I was wondering if anyone else was having the same issue. I still have about 40GB free space, but I had a suspicion it could've been maybe something to deal with that? Thanks.

Mac isnt showing dimensions of images when using "get info"

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 04:16 PM PST

So I got my Mac repaired and restored it using time Machine. Today while organizing various new wallpapers I noticed that when I use "get info" the 'more info' section is blank, as seen here.I went to check my older wallpapers and other images and their 'more info' section has the appropriate data. Is there a way to fix this?

Forgot to add I'm running El Capitan if that matters all.

I also noticed that when on Finder and I go to View > Show View Options > and uncheck and check the "show item info" that also doesn't the dimensions, if that can further help identify the problem

    Windows 10 Partition

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 02:51 PM PST

2016 15" MBPro, 500gb SSD, macOS 10.13 High Sierra. Want to create a partition to install Windows 10. APFS seems to be very resistant to partitioning with Boot Camp or Disk Utility. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks

Contacts app doesn't save profile photos

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:22 AM PST

I've been updating profile photos in the Contacts app. After I was done, I realised that all the photos are just gone, it saved like 20% of everything I updated.

    Bug?

The photos are updated on my iPhone somehow. macOS just doesn't show it.

does anybody have mavericks on their purchased list?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:04 AM PST

i know this is a little bit too much but i'd really appreciate it if anybody could PM me their apple id (you can obviously change your password if you dont trust me) so i can downgrade my mac :(.

If anybody does it I'll really appreciate it, I'm done with the flat design and a slow mac. I have a mid 2012 macbook pro but it shipped with el capitan so internet recovery doesnt do it for me.

anyway, thanks for even reading this. I swear on my life I'd just download mavericks and tell you to change your password when I'm done.

EDIT: it's safer for you to send me the installer via dropbox or something. I really need to downgrade 😭😭 please i'd be so grateful i swear on my life

EDIT2: i swear i dont have any bad intentions. Don't give away your ID to me, it was a bad idea. Anything else like email or dropbox works please 😩

I read on the internet a while ago that running games in Windows gives you a higher performance than running them in macOS, because of some feature or technology built in to Windows that isn’t on macOS. Is this true, or just a myth?

    LastPass vs. Keychain?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:56 AM PST

Which one do u use and which one do you think it's better? Why? And does a 3rd party manager has an impact on battery and performance? Why would you change to another one rather than use the built in Keychain?
