Apple Help Installing an SSD in a mid 2012 Macbook Pro

Installing an SSD in a mid 2012 Macbook Pro

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 08:31 PM PST

    Info

    PSY CS900 120GB SSD

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2

So, wanted to put in an SSD. What a miserable journey lol. Created my USB installer, put in the new SSD. Booted from the USB, went into Disk Utility and the problems begin. The Internal Drive was called Media and was reading a size of 0kb. So, rebooted. Didn't show up at all this time. It alternates, sometimes it appears, sometimes not.

    Troubleshooting Steps Attempted.

    • diskutil list, which showed the 0kb drive sometimes
    • ebooted many times
    • Internet Recovery mode, shows the same thing
    • PRAM and SMC clearing
    • unplugged the SSD and replugged it in

    Causes?

    • Potential failure of the hard drive cable
    • SSD failure

    Notes

    • No flashing ? mark folder
    • SSD failure is unlikely, as it is literally brand new
    • The previous HDD which was being replaced worked. It was painfully slow, but FirstAid and fsck --fy showed no issues with the HDD

    Steps To attempt

    • Format the SSD using another Mac Hard to do, as I have no access to another Apple Computer
    • Put in the old drive and use a SATA to USB cable to format the new SSD Don't have the cable yet

Any advice on what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

Siri sets temp to decimal point

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 07:54 PM PST

Hi I'm using a Honeywell Lyric T6 thermostat. When I ask Siri to set the temperature in my house to 71 degrees, she will respond with "okay. Setting the temperature to 70.7 degrees"

Why does she use decimal points for temperature?

Best iPhone X glass screen shield?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 01:52 PM PST

What's the best iPhone X glass screen protection out right now? I have the Anker ones but those are requiring a lot more extra pressure on the screen for key presses.

Battery not charging, but mac running on the power adapter, no green or orange light.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 10:00 PM PST

I'm running a late 2013 mbp with mac os High Sierra. I've had this problem for a while now where after the battery drops to ~30%, the magsafe 2 won't charge the battery anymore but keeps it running on the power adapter. I took it to the store once after which it worked fine for a while, but I started experiencing it again a couple weeks ago. I've tried cleaning all the ports and pins, reset the SMC, but nothing helped. I even tried a different charger and the problem still persists. I'm not sure anymore if its the magsafe or the mac, which is faulty.

First Gen iPod stuck in recovery loop, iTunes can't restore

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 05:38 PM PST

[UPDATE: Solved] I downloaded a program that was able to force my iPod out of recovery mode. It's all better now, just need to figure out how to update it.

I'm feeling kind of dumb right now, and hope that I didn't completely brick my iPod. I originally connected it to iTunes to update the iOS, since it was super behind (pretty sure it was on iOS 1.1.5). It's not jailbroken, all it has on it are 209 songs. Is there anything I can do? Or should I take it to Apple for a repair?

Here is what I did, in order: 1. Plugged iPod (screen unlocked, in normal mode) into laptop, iTunes couldnt recognize it because of an "invalid response" 2. Put iPod into recovery mode, iTunes recognized it, clicked "restore iPod" 3. iTunes began to restore it but then gave me the message "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)." 4. Can't get iPod out of recovery mode

iTunes is up to date, Windows is up to date, tried all USB ports, iPod still won't exit recovery mode when hard restarting, have tried restarting computer (didn't do anything), can't enter DFU mode (not sure if I'm doing it wrong or if it's something else)

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Too many corpses being created! (Macbook pro stuck on loading screen)

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 09:17 PM PST

When i used my macbook pro last year on the 30th, there was no problem seemingly, however on the 31st of december, it got stuck at the loading screen, never going beyond it.

Problem: macbook pro stuck at loading screen, bar fills up, but never loads.

    What i have tried:

-deleting a large file to clear some space (via single user mode)

-restoring/fixing the file rs.server via the following instructions but didn't helped.

-checking the state of the HDD via disk aid and single user mode, HDD is OK.

I have captured a few images of the single user mode stating that "update is not compatible" followed by error of "too many corpses being created "

    https://imgur.com/a/uynGH

I'm starting to see that maybe the only option will have to create a clean and fresh new install of high sierra, however, that means loss of data, which i have backed up, but not in its entirety, so last option is to wipe away the debt by bringing them the girl everything to factory settings.

Please help, i really hope i can return my computer it was before (and update no more forever)

Computer specs: macbook pro early 2011 13" running high sierra (version unknown but probably latest)

iCloud Drive showing 15GB used, but is actually empty

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 08:54 PM PST

I paid for a 50 GB plan and uploaded some videos and files in iCloud Drive. They were around 15GB. I decided to delete them all in order to revert to the free 5GB plan. However, it still shows 15GB used in iCloud Drive. Everything is deleted, I emptied the recently deleted section, yet iCloud is taking up those 15GB. I went to settings and the storage was taken up by "Other Documents", which I can not delete. I logged in on icloud.com on a PC, and I was shown the same thing. What should I do? I have already called apple but they were not helpful, I will keep calling them.

    Here are some screenshots

Iphone X using cellular data despite supposedly being connected to WIFI

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 08:38 PM PST

I've had an iPhone since the iPhone 4. I've never had this problem before so I'm stumped.

I'm logged into the same WIFI on my Mac at home so it's not like I'm guessing the password wrong. It says I'm connected to "John's Wifi Network" and the icon is blue when I swipe down to the notification center.

I recently checked my apps to see data usage on cellular and saw some insane numbers which doesn't make sense since I'm always at home. I turned the app to 'never using cellular data' and now it doesn't work even though I'm "connected to WIFI", so I'm certain that something is off.

    Please help!

iTunes is taking a seemingly infinite amount of time to backup my iPhone 5 16GB

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 08:31 PM PST

    iPhone 5 16GB, iOS 10.3.3

    iTunes 12.7.2.58

    Mac OS 10.11.6

I wanted to sync my iPhone for some new music and such, since I haven't actually plugged it in since July 2016. So I plugged it in and tried to sync, and it would hang at Step 2 of 6 "Backing up".

I solved this issue by deleting all backups I had on the computer, and it synced. But now when I go to create a brand new backup, it's till hanging on Step 2 of 4 "Backing up".

I've reset the iPhone via Lock and Home buttons, I've turned off the Mac, nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

    iPhone vs MacBook Pro Internet

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 08:22 PM PST

I'm having an internet connectivity issue at home. My iOS devices are able to connect to my home wifi and consequently the internet. My two MacBook Pros (2009 13" and 2010 "15 both running Yosemite) sometimes are able to connect to the wifi, but a lot of the time they act like they're searching for a network. When they do connect to the network there is no internet connection. Any ideas or suggestions? Many thanks!

Some Mac settings not saving changes

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 11:28 AM PST

So I went on a trip and put a password on my Mac in case it would get stolen or something. Now I'm trying to revert it back to not requiring a password, but it's not saving the changes.

Particularly, when I uncheck "Require password" and close it out, it immediately reverts back to being checked:

Furthermore, when I first went to put a password on my Mac, I changed it just for good measure and I keep getting this message in the iCloud settings:

    https://i.imgur.com/1lBhtSX.png

However, every time I type in the password and hit OK, it doesn't do anything and the message is still there.

I've tried rebooting, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

Problem is, every time I restart, I get the same message. I'm not sure how to get out of this. I need Windows 10 for a class this semester, so I tried to partition my drive.

Does 16GB of Ram on the new Macbooks create more heat vs 8GB?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 07:06 AM PST

Using my new Macbook Pro 13" with 16GB of RAM i'm finding its quite warm on the palm rest and its very annoying.

I can't find information anywhere that says that having 16GB of RAM generates more heat than 8GB or not.

It would be great if anyone who has got some data on this could shed some light on it for me

    Thanks!

iPhone 7 won't download new apps; stuck in infinite app store log in.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 07:19 PM PST

So I'm trying to download a new app onto my phone. To verify the download the popup asking for my iCloud password appears. I enter in my information and the little blue check mark appears with the word "Done" showing it has been processed. But then after a moment instead of the app beginning installation the log in pop up appears again. And again. And again.

I've tried resetting, powering down, logging out of the iCloud and logging in after resetting, but none of it works. I've even tried to download different apps and I get the same response, meaning it isn't the specific app I'm attempting to download, but rather the entire app store (at least on my end). Could anybody suggest a solution to this?

EDIT: I tried turning off the "Password Required" setting, but in order to change this setting you need to confirm with your password and it does the same thing. Maybe it's my account?

EDIT 2: Just changed my password...no luck. Still infinite log in screens

Best AntiVirus / Malware check for Mac?

My macbook pro screen cracked, seemingly by itself when I shut the lid. Will apple care cover this?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 08:11 AM PST

So a few nights ago I was using my mac, closed the screen and in the morning when I went to open there was a small crack in the very bottom left which looks like it has a point of impact with three small lines coming off of it. The crack is so so small but has caused the whole left side of the screen to go black. Will apple care cover this (I have the extended three year one) or will I have to fork out hundreds of pounds to get this fixed.

    Thanks for any help

iPhone storage says it's full even though only 5 gigabytes are taken up on a 16 gb model?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 06:43 PM PST

I just updated my iphone 6s to 11.2.2 via itunes and I received an "Attempting Data Recovery" message upon finishing the installation. I have never jailbroken this device and something doesn't add up here.

edit: the phone says that the OS takes up about 7 gb but that still doesn't explain why I get a storage full message with 5gb or so free

Can I pop off the keys on the newest macbook pro like I could on previous models?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 12:45 PM PST

My J key isn't working well. It either doesn't type, there's a delay in the type so it shows up after the next letter, or it types twice.

I'd like to remove it, check that there isn't anything stuck under it, and put it back, but I'm worried because I don't know if it works like previous keyboards. Should I be able to pop this one out without breaking it or should I bring it to a genius bar?

Assistance Needed with Podcast App (iTunes 12.7.2.60)

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 06:27 PM PST

    Hi There!

Here's to hoping I might be able to reach out to you all for a solution to my problem.

Here's the situation. I work in a building that has little to no wifi access in the areas where I work, so streaming podcasts is not possible on my iPod touch. My usual setup is to download the podcast episodes to my home computer and then sync them to my ipod using iTunes for use at work. Until the iTunes 11 update, this always worked as advertised. However, the glaring issue that I am having now, is that the native Apple Podcasts shows the downloaded episode as well as the same episode which is in the cloud. Now, they've fixed the continuous play problem, however, every time I get to the end of a downloaded podcast, the program fails, because it tries to play the cloud episode and of course, I have no wifi, so I have to go in and manually select the next downloaded episode. I simply cannot figure out a way to get to recognize that I have the episode downloaded and not want to push me immediately to the cloud version of the episode. I am attaching a link to a screenshot here.

    https://ibb.co/e4GeE6

Any assistance would be much appreciated!

I am using an iPod Touch, running version iOS 11.2.2, with iTunes 12.7.2.60, in a Windows 10 machine.

Mid 2012 MBP RAM Slot Issue/Question

    Posted: 15 Jan 2018 06:26 PM PST

My MBP kept getting screen glitches, freezing, and randomly shutting down from time to time. During one of these recent episodes, after the shutdown, I got the 3 beeps. After doing my research I determined I had a RAM issue. After trying out suggested RAM and slot tests, I'm pretty sure my top RAM slot is bad, as both my 4gb RAM seem to work fine in the bottom slot. I currently can't afford a new logic board which seems to be the only suggested fix for a bad RAM slot, so thus my question:

Will replacing the 1 4gb stick with 1 8gb stick in one slot be equivalent to the 2 4gb RAM I had prior? What potential issues may come up over time? I'm an active DJ so my biggest fear is my laptop crapping out on me during a gig.

    Thanks.
