Apple Pencil on iBooks on iOS 11 - can you just annotate PDFs as soon as your pencil touches the screen or do you need to click on the edit (the pencil) button?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2017 07:08 AM PDT

I've seen quite a few videos of the iOS 11 betas where the reviewers say if you have an Apple Pencil, you can just start annotating on PDFs directly without needing to click on the pencil icon. But that's not working for me. I always need to first click the icon on iOS 11 (non beta). Is this a bug?

IPad (2017) or iPad Pro 10.5

    Posted: 23 Oct 2017 02:56 AM PDT

So I am seriously considering an iPad.

I've already decided I will buy my parents a standard iPad.

What I am hung up on is my own iPad decision. I'm leaning towards the standard iPad for myself as well but wanted some opinions from people that use them everyday.

My use case will mainly be browsing the web, Netflix, YouTube and probably a few games, I currently own a Macbook so if I ever type up a letter I would probably use that, although the option of the iPad Pro for that would be nice it is not a deal changer either way.

I do like a nice display, which I know the Pro has. But I haven't really seen this myself. I have used each of the iPad's at a store but it's not an ideal place to try them out and they have very limited apps to demo etc.

I just don't want to spend almost double on something if it isn't worth it basically.

I wouldn't buy the pen if I was to get the pro. Nor would I buy the Pro's keyboard, at least not straight away.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Especially from those that either have both or made the upgrade from the standard to pro. Or indeed downgrade.

Sketch equivalent for iPad? - Drawing interfaces for layouts for apps or web design

    Posted: 23 Oct 2017 12:08 PM PDT

    Hello,

I use Sketch quite a bit to design apps and website sites. It is focused on the task, vector based, and has export for your creations to use in Xcode or the app.

Has anyone found an equivalent for the iPad with the Pencil?

    • easy to draw vector shapes, with a library of basics (square, rounded square, circles)
    • good font tools
    • easy to pick and change colours
    • export designs to PDFs/ PNG I can import into Xcode or use on the web
    • optionally have art boards to quickly start designs for mobile or the web

The dream would be Sketch is made for the iPad, and it syncs with Sketch for the Mac, but they have said they are not interested in the iOS market.

    thanks !

My iPad doesn't seem to know what version of ios it's on

Do you guys have the same problem with iPads?

My handwriting is garbage. Any good iPad Pro/pencil apps that would help?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 06:38 PM PDT

I haven't done handwriting anything since highschool and even then lots of my notes were typed. Even back then my handwriting wasn't good, it's worse now, but I'd like to improve. What are my options?

iPad Pro 12.9" clamshell/laptop style keyboard case - lots of cheap looking options, what's the best?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2017 11:47 AM PDT

    Hello!

So, I'm doing early Christmas shopping and am going to be (probably) buying an iPad Pro for my wife (the 12.9" version). She doesn't use any programs that couldn't be done on an iPad Pro and wants to go all in on iOS. Only thing is, she wants to keep the option of a traditional laptop layout, or at the least, a Surface-style one.

I've seen a ton of cheap keyboards and cases on Amazon that should work, but are there any that are really solid and that people like? Color preference is gold/rose gold when possible, budget isn't really an issue as long as the unit I'm getting is worth it. Regular Apple style keyboard isn't bad, but for the price I'd prefer something more solid and lappable.

And no, I haven't asked her about this, but we talk a lot and these are things I've inferred, so surprises are kept in store, haha.

    Thanks!

I have a few questions that I can't seem to get answered with Google.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 06:12 PM PDT

Okay, so I'm really wanting to get an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil and I have a few questions.

First, what I want to use it for:

I'm a therapist and I regularly takes notes while seeing clients. My notes are NOT linear whatsoever. I write stuff in random parts of the paper, make shapes, underline things, have lots of arrows, etc. I find myself losing pages of notes, getting them all wrinkled, and the client's files bulging with horribly unorganized papers. I also draw a lot of charts and ideas for clients during sessions. I would love to be able to give them a copy and keep it their file. But I can't really do this with just paper.

I also go to trainings periodically to learn new things and have multiple binders, notebooks, and papers with notes strewn all over them all over my house/car/office.

I read a lot of scientific journals, articles online, websites, etc. and I like to mark those up but I just can't do that very easily or intuitively on a computer.

I develop presentations, talks, and lunch and learns to share information to people all over the city.

I think an iPad Pro with a pencil would greatly help my workflow, creativity, and organization.

    Second, the questions I have:

    1. In terms on confidentially, how secure could I make notes that I've taken with clients? Could my family have access to my iPad at home for entertainment while still keeping notes and things confidential?

    2. Could I easily email or send the notes I have taken in session to the client afterwards?

    3. Are there apps that I could organize my notes by separate client, training, creative idea, personal journal, etc. all in one app?

    4. Are there currently two versions of the Apple Pencil out? I don't want to buy an old one that isn't as sensitive or accurate.

    5. Would you recommend me getting the newest version of the iPad, or would an model older work just as well for what I need?

    6. If my handwriting sucks, are there apps that I could search my handwritten notes later or apps that take my handwritten stuff and turn it into typed letters?

    7. I just do damn unorganized. Am fooling myself to think that this will help my organization? Am I just convincing myself that it will help but really I'm just excited about a new piece of technology?

    8. If I want to actually type with a keyboard, would you recommend getting the physical keyboard, or is it easy to type just on the screen?

I hope all this makes sense. Thanks in advance guys!

    Inkscape Alternative

    Posted: 23 Oct 2017 01:00 AM PDT

I'm looking for an Inkscape alternative for iPad. What I want to do is import a jpeg/photo, turn it into a vector based image and be able to create and tweak the vectors in this. I currently use Inkscape to create the tool paths for my desktop laser machine and was hoping my iPad could help. Any ideas guys?

iPad Pro 10.5 hard sleeve / case / bag

    Posted: 23 Oct 2017 03:26 AM PDT

Hi, I'm searching for a protective bag for my iPad. There is an endless amount of soft sleeves, cases, bags... but I can't find anything like a hard plastic case, where it is actually protected.

Background is, that I transport my iPad along with other music equipment, and here things can get rough, e.g. someone accidentally puts something heavy on it, or something falls on it during transportation in the trailer.

Lightroom CC and the Option Key

    Posted: 23 Oct 2017 04:40 AM PDT

I just got the Lightroom CC upgrade on my IPad Pro 9.7. The combined use of the option key and sliders doesn't seem to function as they do on my MacBook Pro or my PC. For example, when I hold down the option key while using the mask slider under Detail, I do not see the effects of masking in terms of edge identification...Also, when holding down the option key while adjusting blacks and whites it does not show the extreme values so they can be adjusted. Can anyone help me here?

Looking for ideal case for iPad pro 10.5

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 08:02 PM PDT

Hi all! So I've been scouring the internet the last few days, and have turned up empty handed. I'm an engineering student looking to buy the new iPad pro 10.5, and I'd like to combine Apple's smart keyboard with a compatible leather folio case. The pad and quill is gorgeous, but it puts me over budget, so I was wondering if any of you have come across any cheaper options?

In short, my needs are: Leather folio case Smart keyboard compatible Ideally has pencil loop Cheaper than the Pad and Quill

    Thanks for the time!

    Icloud TOS

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 06:16 PM PDT

So I just upgraded to the newest update. Now my Ipad is completely unusable. I can't do anything because the popup telling me to agree to terms blocks me from opening anything, but when I go to agree to them I just get a loading symbol and nothing happens.

Ive read dreaded things about this new update. Any one have a fix for this, or should I just uninstall the update and wait for Apple to fix this?
