One year with the iPhone 7+ and I am still amazed with the Haptic Engine

    Posted: 26 Sep 2017 03:47 PM PDT

The Haptic Engine Apple put in the iPhone 7 and 7+ is the best. I was a Android user for forever and when I switched to the iPhone 7+ I was amazed by the haptic feedback. The little touches Apple added around the OS such as giving a little buzz when you hit the end of a scroll list or upvote a post on Reddit. Being able to emulate an actual button when you "click" the home button. Mechanical buttons like the one on my iPad feel wrong now. And especially the feedback to ringtones. Sometimes I just sit there and let the phone ring for minutes and feel the vibration changes.

What has been your favorite part of your phone?

The iPad opened the powerful world of technology to older generations. This is a testament to why Apple is so great.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2017 08:12 PM PDT

We forget that Apple really reaches a very broad older generation. Just because they're not here on Reddit or some other website posting doesn't mean they don't exist. We must not forget that.

Honestly, give someone 60+ years old an iPad. Hell, even 80+ years old and they will be able to use it. It's so intuitively accessible.

Not only that but Apple strived to make the device light, thin and easy to hold. Old people with achy hands and not so nimble reflexes appreciate being able to use a device that doesn't tire them out.

My (94 year old) grandpa loves taking pictures with his iPad. Yeah, to a lot it's silly. Yeah, it doesn't take over the top awesome images. But it takes good enough images where he can sit back, enjoy the pictures he took, and is proud and happy to share them with me, my dad and my other cousins and we get it. It's not pictures going up on a fancy blog, or in some artist(s) portfolio. It's just a means of communication and excitement.

Same with my dad (68 years old). He is able to FaceTime with me and communicate. I appreciate being able to do this... I remember trying something similar with my dad long ago, before FaceTime existed and it was a pain in the butt.

Not sure, but I feel we take this moment and time for granted. There's so much amazing tech in what Apple does. It gets poo-poo'd, people aren't happy, etc.

I can for one say I am ecstatic and happy. I hope to see Apple do more to make technology that much more accessible.

TIL A MacBook Pro can charge another one via USB-C

    Posted: 26 Sep 2017 10:50 AM PDT

I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I didn't know about this and I was actually very surprised about it.

Basically a friend of mine forgot his charger and there was no socket nearby. So we were just joking around that I could charge his MacBook with mine via a USB-C cable - and it worked! In addition to that, both MacBooks were aware of each others charge so the full one charged the (almost) empty one.

We both use MacBook Pros from 2017 (13" w/out TouchBar). But to be honest, I wouldn't recommend this charging technique, as it is rather slow. But for urgent matters definitely a life saver.

funny stories with apple watch's unusual heart rate detection

    Posted: 26 Sep 2017 07:54 PM PDT

So I got the series 3 Friday. It's my first apple watch. It has this thing where if it detects your heart rate is unusually high and you haven't moved much for 10 minutes, it gives you a warning. Saturday at the verizon store where I was switching my iphone from sprint to verizon. I'm 18 and it was my first time doing something like that alone, so I was really nervous. The sales person was super impressed that I got the series 3 so fast and he was looking at it. Sure enough it gave me the notification that my heart rate was unusually high. I was embarrassed af and I'm sure he picked up on what happened.

Anything similar ever happened to you guys? I can already guess that next time I have to do a presentation it will go off.

Why does the stainless steel Apple Watch S3 have to be LTE??

    Posted: 26 Sep 2017 01:46 PM PDT

I was looking at buying my first Apple Watch, I noticed some of the series 3 offer watches without LTE which are a little cheaper although this isn't offered with the Stainless Steel (the design I like best) options?? any reason why this could be? I'm just bummed out because i'm not a fan of the red dot and I know I wont use LTE lol.

Having trouble getting the new Siri voice in macOS 10.13 High Sierra?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2017 11:50 PM PDT

I've been having a hell of a time trying to get the new American (Female) Siri voice to show up after updating to High Sierra. I tried every last suggestion I could find from others online, but was having no success.

Then, in a more technically-saavy forum, someone mentioned the new Siri voice was called "Nora", and suggested looking under 'Installations' in 'About This Mac'->'System Report' to see if Nora was installed after updating (there were a number of voices listed, but no Nora), and also looking in Console for evidence of Nora being installed when using Siri.

So, I opened up Console, filtered the stream of messages on "Nora", and fiddled around with Siri for a bit (turning Siri off and on, summoning Siri, changing languages for Siri, etc.). Not sure what I did that caused it to appear, but a particularly relevant error message jumped out at me in the console:

    Download/Installation failed for { SDIMClientPortName = "com.apple.speech.speechdatainstallerd-4651"; SDIMClientProcessID = 1273; SDIMInitiator = SpeechDataDownloadInitiatorSiri; SDIMItemByteSize = 576179801; SDIMItemDownloadStatus = 3; SDIMItemName = Nora; SDIMObjectID = "com.apple.speech.synthesis.voice.custom.siri.nora.premium"; SDIMPurgedItemAfterInstall = ""; SDIMTagName = "VOICEID:com.apple.speech.synthesis.voice.custom.siri.nora.premium_1"; SDIMUserInteractionMode = 1; }, Error: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=-1 "Downloads prevented by user." UserInfo={NSLocalizedFailureReason=Downloads prevented by user.}

Well, that last part jumped out at me... "Downloads prevented by user." (O, RLY?)

I went into 'System Preferences'->'App Store', and two boxes were ticked: 'Automatically check for updates' and 'Install system data files and security updates'. What wasn't ticked was 'Download newly available updates in the background', and that sounded like a good thing to try, considering that "downloads prevented by user" bit in Console.

Anyway, I ticked that box, fiddled around with Siri again (toggled Siri on and off, summoned Siri a few times, etc.), and then I refreshed the 'Installations' list in About This Mac -> System Report ... lo and behold, a new entry topped the list when re-sorted by date: "Voice Update - Nora". Giddy as a school girl, I summoned Siri and asked what time it was. Success!!

I imagine all that's needed is to summon Siri once that 'Download newly available updates in the background' box gets ticked, but I did turn Siri off and on as well, so I can't be sure.

tl;dr -- Go into 'System Preferences'->'App Store' and tick the 'Download newly available updates in the background' checkbox. Then use Siri a bit and the new voice (Nora) should appear.

Understanding the difference between APFS encryption and FileVault

    Posted: 26 Sep 2017 06:17 PM PDT

I'm trying to understand the difference between APFS encryption and FileVault and the following few questions come into mind.

Can I disable FileVault on an APFS encrypted volume?

If I do the above, will it still be APFS encrypted and not FileVault encrypted?

Am I double encrypting my volume if APFS encryption and FileVault are both enabled?
