Can I use the M1 iMac as an external display for an M1 MBP natively? Posted: 03 May 2022 04:23 PM PDT Does the host Apple M1 computer treat the display and the speaker like HDMI on an external display? The Studio display is neat and all, but it would be nice to have a second computer when and if my MBP gets compromised. I tried to use Universal control on an iPad and a monitor that isn't color accurate in my workflow, but I need the real estate, color accuracy, and redundancy of having a setup like this. Is it possible? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2022 09:04 AM PDT So here it is. I'm a linux user, and specifically use my computer for work. I have an opportunity to switch to mac if I want to. What are some good reasons to switch over from linux? PS, I'm a network engineer. [link] [comments]
Calendar account getting intercepted by Mcafee? Posted: 03 May 2022 07:55 PM PDT Something rather concerning is happening when my Calendar app tries to load my data from Google. I get this pop up telling me about some interception: What is this and what does it mean? It seems like a man-in-the-middle attack but I don't know how it started or what's causing it. Edit: I have no mcafee products installed and the url in the certificate is fake it seems. [link] [comments]
Is there a way I can access extensions on Safari without adding them to the toolbar? Posted: 03 May 2022 03:53 PM PDT I like using extensions like honey and Bitwarden but I still want to access them without having them cluttering my toolbar. Other browsers like Firefox have a dropdown where you can hide all your extensions, does Safari have anything similar? [link] [comments]

Allow USB-C Dock to Power On MacBook Pro Posted: 03 May 2022 09:16 AM PDT I have an Apple-silicon Macbook Pro, so far so good as a development machine. One thing I'm trying to get working is to have my docking station power up the macbook when I plug it in. Right now I need to open up the clamshell, power on, login, THEN I can close it and use the attached mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc. My Windows laptop could just startup from the dock plugging in, I figure there's a way to do this on the Mac as well. keep dock mode even when power adapter unplugged Posted: 03 May 2022 11:11 AM PDT My current desk setup for my Macbook Pro has the AC power adapter plugged in, while also have a USB-C dock that has HDMI to monitor 2nd monitor (primary monitor off HDMI port) and USB port for keyboard/mouse. I have the Macbook lid closed. If I unplug the AC power adapter, the Mac seems to go to sleep, and the external monitors show no signal. How do I tell MacOS to not do that. I want it to continue running like normal, keep video on. Note: the USB_C dock does't have external power, so it's not charging the Macbook. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2022 10:16 AM PDT Hi all. I'm a new user to MacOS having just purchased a Mac Mini. On closing Safari (with the red dot in the top left) all the tabs I have open close. When I open Safari again, I have to start from scratch. This is extremely annoying. I have turned on a setting in System that said something like "Don't close tabs on application close" and I changed the very hopeful "Open all tabs where you left off" in Safari preferences. Neither of these changes made a blind bit of difference. I don't have this issue on Safari on my phone or my iPad, so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong / stupid. How do I resolve this? Is SMB sharing broken in Monterey? Posted: 03 May 2022 07:52 AM PDT The majority of our corporate Macs are running Catalina and some of them have file sharing enabled for use with a specific application. The folder to be shared is on the primary users desktop and for these I set up a sharing only user which is used to connect to the folder from other Macs. This has all been working fine until I was asked to set up the sharing for someone on a new device running Monterey. I set up the sharing user, desktop folder and share permissions as normal, but when trying to connect to the folder from another machine using the sharing user account all I get is a message that the account does not have access to any shares, or there are no shares available. To test everything I got another Mac which I had recently upgraded to Monterey and which also has a VM running Catalina to it. The sharing worked fine on it, presumably as it had been set up previously. I carried out a full erase and re-install on the machine to replicate what my users are seeing with their new devices. Sure enough, once the sharing is set up, the folder cannot be connected to except for the user who has the folder on their desktop. If I connect with another standard user account then all I see are that users public share and home folder. My initial thought is that it's because the other users don't have read access to the full folder hierarchy, i.e. the folder is at /Users/myuser/Desktop/Shared Folder, but I've only set permissions to Shared Folder, not the rest of the path, not that I've ever known that to be an issue before. Has anyone else come across this? I know historically Apple's implementation of SMB has been hit-or-miss. [link] [comments]
Is there a way to ONLY have Mac documents stored in the iCloud? Posted: 03 May 2022 09:11 AM PDT Is there a way to only have documents stored in the iCloud? I don't care to have the things on my desktop there but I can only find an option for "Desktop and Documents." Wondering if there's a workaround. [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 May 2022 08:10 AM PDT Recently I've seen a problem with file streaming on Google Drive for Desktop. Files appear with a .pkgf at the end of files. There is also a warning that "Folder location is controlled by File Provider". As I understand File Provider is a macOS app? Anyone has that problem? [link] [comments]
Sync Edge and Safari Bookmarks *On Mac* Posted: 03 May 2022 07:45 AM PDT I'm trying to figure out how to keep Safari and Microsoft Edge bookmarks in sync, however it looks like all of the posts I've found relate to syncing on a PC. In my case, I have a Mac where I use Microsoft Edge, but on my iPhone I use Safari. I don't need to bring a PC into it, so trying to work out how I can keep them in sync. [link] [comments]
Is there a way to disable xProtect on MacOS11/12? Posted: 03 May 2022 07:43 AM PDT Hey guys, I am trying to figure out a way to disable xProtect on some macs inside my company (for pentesting and security research). I found some articles about bypassing it on Catalina but I will be trying that on M1 machines and/or newer MacOS versions.. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Need help reinstalling Big Sur on MacBook Pro Posted: 03 May 2022 07:18 AM PDT I'm trying to reinstall Big Sur on a MacBook Pro (A1502) since a friend of mine wants to give it away to his sister; I already erased the hard drive (no need for back ups), then select "reinstall MacOS Big Sur". After what I assume is the system downloading the OS, it restarts and a message tells me to wait for about 25 minutes. After that's done I get a message: "an error occured preparing the software update". I've tried checking the date since some guides suggest a wrong date might be causing this. Also I don't understand why it says it is an update, I just want to reinstall the OS that was working before we erased the hard drive. Currently I feel like the Mac Pro is as good as bricked, since I don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments]
Outlook Messages in user folder. Posted: 03 May 2022 06:07 AM PDT Hi guys, I have a Macbook Air here that is in desperate need of updating. I need to free up some space and can see that within the user folder, within the outlook profile is a folder called messages. The email is office 365, is it safe to delete this? It's using up a lot of space. Cheers for any resposne. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2022 05:48 AM PDT So this question kind of spans across multiple areas. I'm using borg to backup my mac to a remote device. I've written a small script in rust to do this, and this script works successfully whenever I manually execute it, but for some reason when I try to get cron job to execute it automatically, it panics with a 'No such file or directory (os error 2)'. Anyone happen to know what cron job is doing differently and possibly how I can resolve this? This is the command where it's panicking in Rust when cronjob does it. This is my cronjob

Is there a way to auto-hide the menu bar for specific apps only? Posted: 03 May 2022 01:47 AM PDT I've recently enabled the menubar to be visible in full screen, which I like, but I'd like it to auto-hide during fullscreen video, I know there's probably no native way to do this, but can anybody recommend any good third party apps with a minimal footprint that will allow me to do this? Enabling HDR lowers brightness and makes image quality look like shit Posted: 03 May 2022 02:07 PM PDT I am connecting a mac mini to a samsung smart TV (with hdr) with hdr disabled the quality and brightness look fine, but the moment I enable hdr in mac settings the brightness of the display goes down by around 75% (the display menu is not affected and stays at normal brightness, just the mac image is dim) I know mac is just generally garbage at everything, but is there a way to get hdr working on mac? I would prefer to use this expensive paperweight for something, but everything I have tried has just proven its uselessness. I am using macOS Monterey [link] [comments]

Safari URL suggestion is too slow Posted: 03 May 2022 04:58 AM PDT URL suggestion in Safari address bar sometimes is too slow compared to the other browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge). Did you notice that? I have MBP M1 with macOS 12.3.1. [link] [comments] |
