Posted: 24 Feb 2022 12:54 AM PST Yesterday I had to reinstall my Mac because the OS was corrupt. I than realized that my latest backup was 3 weeks ago… Is it possible to schedule timemachine backups and to get notified if it did not create the backup? [link] [comments]

Which Chromium browser is an overall good one? (Light,Privacy focused) Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:24 PM PST I've been using Brave for a while. Its good with the default Shields options to block trackers and ads. However it seems like taking a bit of memory on my mac. I just downloaded Edge and its extremely lightweight. This also has default privacy focused options to block trackers and ads. I however still install Ublock Origin. Any suggestions that might help make it easier to decide? [link] [comments]

Trouble updating to macOS Monterey Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:39 PM PST I'm trying to update my father's computer (2018 15-inch MacBook Pro) to Monterey. It's updating from Mojave 10.14.6 (yes I know he hasn't updated it in a long time). I was able to download the installer with no problems, however when I go to install Monterey the loading bar gets extremely close to the end but an error message pops up with something along the lines of "An Error Occurred - You can try to install the update again." Other than the Mac being fairly far behind updates, he has around 40 GB of storage and a stable internet connection. According to Apple's sure there shouldn't be any trouble updating from such an old OS. I've read around and already tried to install in a safe boot with no luck Any help would be appreciated! Why does Finder not have a new tab button? Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:16 PM PST Bugs the hell out of me. If you are going to have a tabbed application, you should have a new tab button. [link] [comments]
Showing Cellular Signal Strength in Menubar when connected to Personal Hotspot Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:34 PM PST I don't know if there's an app, a thing for MacForge, or something else, but I want to be able to preview my signal strength instead of seeing the Paired symbol in the menubar, pretty much mimicking what we see in the status bar on iOS. Siri and App Store not working after updating to catalina Posted: 23 Feb 2022 08:29 PM PST Hello fellow users! I recently updated my mid 2012 MacBook Pro to catalina. Again. Prior was mojave and the app store worked fine and all but siri stopped working. I was willing to live without siri but now the update makes both not work. When i open the app store, its blank and the colored beach ball keeps spinning. I have to force close it. Siri was working fine prior to getting Mojave. Got Mojave and it stopped working. I enable/disable it. Nothing. I click the siri logo on the top right and it doesn't activate. Nothing happens when i click it. So what can i do to fix it? I reinstalled both OS and that didn't do it. My MacBook still is solid for me. I don't use it for much other than shopping/bills and for school stuff. I did the update because I wanted the most recent security patches. [link] [comments]
iMessage syncing between iPhone and Mac Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:02 PM PST Hello All, So here's the situation: my mac contains an iMessage conversation that goes back all the way to 2016. My iPhone has the same conversation going back to only late 2019 (it was cleared to free up space at some point). I'm trying to save the entire conversation to PDF - most likely through iMazing - which is why I'd like the entirety of it on my iPhone. Currently, I think (?) I have message forwarding on or whatever it's called when I receive messages on both and when I send from one both are updated, but if I delete a particular message on one it stays on the other. So I have some questions on how to sync my messages from Mac to iPhone If I turn on syncing through iCloud:
Alternatively, if anyone has suggestions on how to save to PDF a LONG iMessage conversation other than by scrolling and then <CMMD+P> I'd love to hear the options. [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:25 PM PST I've been struggling to help determine how I get Apple mail to finish its initial download of a large O365 mailbox. Brand new 27in iMac over 24 hours and mail client still shows downloading 19k messages. I currently have three mailboxes configured. Any feedback folks have would be greatly appreciated, have had a hard time convincing user to switch to outlook client on Mac. [link] [comments]
Is there a “best practice” for upgrading macOS to the next major version? Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:59 PM PST I'm a long time Mac user who has been very happy sticking with Mojave for as long as I could. Yesterday I bit the bullet and tried to upgrade to Catalina from the App Store. Installer started, reboot and about an hour in it just got stuck on "27 minutes remaining…" I let it sit for another few hours but no movement in the progress bar (about 25% complete). I read that the installer freezing is somewhat common (again one of the main reasons I stuck with Mojave is because of Apple's severe decline in software quality in recent years). Several online posts said that the only way to unfreeze was to hold the power button down and force a reboot. I did that, but got the same result. Another post said to boot into safe mode and try the install, but when holding shift key at startup the MacBook Pro immediately shuts down while the fans make a brief, loud "whoosh". This happens every time. I even tried booting into Recovery and disk utility said the disk was fine. I tried reinstalling MacOS from Recovery (Mojave), but the same issue occurs - the installer starts but just gets frozen at around "26 minutes remaining". I booted back into recovery again and this time opened the Terminal to see what my drive contents looked like. Interestingly enough, /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/ had a bunch of install metadata, and most of my content was moved to "Recovered Items". I'm not sure what my next step is from here. I do have a Time Machine backup, but it's from over a month ago, so even if I got "restore from Time Machine backup" to work, I'd likely lose a lot of my recent work. I'd try to see if I could copy over any recent files to a thumb drive, but I doubt I'd be able to recover everything. Is this my only option at this point? Time Machine restore and stick with Mojave? Assuming I get the laptop working again and wanted to retry upgrading to Catalina — is there a safe best practice to follow so that I don't lose another two days trying to get my Mac to boot? Many thanks in advance 🙏✌️ [link] [comments]

Ok To Delete CacheClip Contents In Movies Folder Posted: 23 Feb 2022 12:37 PM PST Is it ok to delete the contents in the CacheClip folder within the Movies folder? I'm just unsure if these files are from old iMovie projects (ie, render files) or if these are files iMovie uses to run. If it's the former then, yeah, I don't need them anymore. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Advice on using “increased” protection like two factor with Fido/Yuri or similar? Posted: 23 Feb 2022 12:21 PM PST Just listening to the latest Lex Friedman about cyber security. It was advised to ideally use two factor like a fido key. I was wondering if any macOS / apple users have some advice in particular for my situation with regards to using apple hardware, rather than just any computer user. Currently I use 1Password with "long" password/phrases for my online accounts Face/Touch ID for iPhone/iPad (the passcode is a simple 6 digit) Only a very few online accounts have two factor turned on (for Apple ID) I don't like sms text two factor due to the sloppy unsecured system of it and the ease of sim hacking. The balance is convenience and being annoyed before logging in, using 1Password with touch/Face ID is super easy. But I realise that of course If somehow my 1Password got hacked or someone got to reset or got my password for a particular account I am still screwed. Have any of you improved your security of your accounts beyond this and are there perhaps some unique ways with the apple hardware that I can make more use of….? [link] [comments]

Disable HDR on m1 pro when I want to relax my eyes but watch content Posted: 23 Feb 2022 10:56 AM PST Is there a way to disable HDR videos getting painfully bright especially when I have set my brightness to the lowest setting? I'm slightly photophobic and at times I'm pretty much content viewing my screen at low brightness. I dot turn it up when I edit stuff and need accurate contrast and colors but for the most part I usually don't like running my mac on high brightness. Is there a way to toggle HDR videos not brightening up the screen too much? it also feels so imbalanced as the white on the surrounding areas outside the hdr video looks grayed out. Need Some Help Understanding Photos Basics Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:35 PM PST I have a late 2012 High Sierra iMac, A new iPhone 13, and a late '13 Big Sur MBPro. All 3 are on my AppleID/iCloud account. All 3 use iCloud for Photos. There is plenty of storage on my iCloud account. Why do I see significant differences between photos content between the devices? When I create a new Album on the iMac, when will I see it on the MBPro or the iPhone? Not sure what I am missing here and I apologize because I assume this is an easy fix to have everything synched.
