    It´s been annoying me to no end that you can´t drag files by icon in Preview, like you can in Word or Safari. Then I realized the icon appears if you hover the pointer above the filename on the top bar - and you can easily drag/drop!

    Storage problem after reinstall on MacOS Monterey

    Hi guys! I recently reinstalled my OS and I see there's a problem with my partitions. In finder, on the left side, i see two mounted drives (I have only one). In storage management I see this. After calculating, the hashed part on the top is the same as the one greyed out beneath (see picture 1 & 2). In picture 3 the "other volumes" storage space is the same as all the colored ones on top. Does someone know how to fix this issue? I haven't seen this before.

    I recently cancelled Apple Music subscription and went back to all the music I have owned offline from past 15 years. And now, biggest problem I am facing is to find a good looking, functional app that works well for offline music. I used to use VOX for this purpose, but now their cost doesn't make sense if you don't need cloud storage.

    I am aware that one can technically even use VLC/IINA like tools to simply drag-drop and play. But just wondering if there are recommendations for app that's made for music only.

    Features I am looking for.

    • FlAC/Loseless support.
    • Not looking for extensive library management but having a 'library/folder' view will be nice.
    • Better UI than VLC or other video driven media players.

    Restoring Macintosh HD

    In the process of trying to reset my macbook to get rid of 70gb worth of 'other' storage i deleted the Macintosh HD internal drive. when i now boot it up and open disk utility, the only internal drive is called 'update'. it is an apfs volume and below that on the left window panel, the only disk images is 'macOS Base system' which has an eject icon next to it. can anybody help in restoring my macbook to working order please

    Bluetooth debug in Monterey

    Hi all,

    i've read that on previous macOS it was possible to get Debug bluetooth informations by hitting Shift + Option + click on the Bluetooth icon.

    It should show RSSI per devices and other stuff.

    But in my cas, i can't see that. Just Mac Address.

    I tried to kill the blutooth by typing

    sudo pkill bluetoothd

    But still nothing.

    Any idea?

    Shortcuts for MacOS cannot add keyboard shortcut to trigger shortcut

    from the Help page (Run a shortcut while working on your Mac):

    Run a shortcut from a keyboard shortcut

    Setup: In the Shortcuts app on your Mac, double-click a shortcut, click [settings button], click Add Keyboard Shortcut, then press a key combination.To remove the keyboard shortcut you added, click the "Run with" field, then press Delete.

    Run the shortcut: In any app in macOS, press the key combination.

    Note: Some keyboard shortcuts are reserved for system use and cannot be overridden.

    I just cannot get this to work. The app insists I have Use as a Quick Action selected, and therefore doesn't work unless you've got a file selected in Finder.

    Can anyone else try this and see if they can replicate it?

    And does anyone know where I can report this bug?

    Really weird. Spotlight in the top right wasn't working yesterday, then suddenly started again after I opened 'Advanced Prefs' in Finder

    But... iMessage search bar isn't functioning at all. Type in a name for example, and nothing is returned - just a blank grey box. Anyone else had this?

    Apple Music Player slows down music playback

    I just a pretty weird bug with my apple music app.

    When I played a song it immediately noticed, that it was pitched down (playback was slower and therefore the melody was also deeper). Everything else (YouTube, Netflix, etc.) worked just fine.

    After switching the audio output of my Mac it worked just fine and got back to normal. I didn't find anything similar on the internet, so I figured I'll post it here.

    Re-mapping default key shortcuts?

    Is there a way to change the default key shorcuts on the Mac keyboard? I love not having to press the function key to use the feature keys, such as play/pause, toggle DnD, etc.

    There are, however, keys that I do not use and would like to map to something else, while maintaining the ability to only press the key (no Fn press needed).

    Is this possible? Thanks!

    I am forced to use a screensaver (work MDM setting), and I don't care for any of the screensaver options in Monterey. However I like the new dynamic desktops (The Lake, The Cliffs, etc). Is there a way to set the screensaver to use these dynamic desktop images instead?

    On a semi-related note, when I lock the computer, it shows the desktop image, but it goes away after a few seconds. Is there a way to make it stay longer? I already have the "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping..." option turned on, but that doesn't seem to help.

    Is it possible to change the numpad key , to . depending on application?

    I have a keyboard with numpad (MK2 black), which has a comma ( , ) as decimal due to my language preferences, but some applications read dot ( . ) as decimal indicator instead. I was wondering if there's a way to automate which value that key returns depending on application active, using either a script or something like BetterTouchTool

    Videos go dark on external display.

    Really strange problem I'm having.

    Videos go much darker, and have the contrast turned up when I stop moving the mouse. I first noticed with full screen youtube videos, and the difference is stark, it's almost like the colour profile on the monitor is being switched.

    Since first noticing this I've also made the following observations: It happens with quicktime vids, even if they are not full screen. It only happens with Youtube when it is full screen. It doesn't happen with my laptops internal display, only the external.

    I tried to record it with screen-record on Quicktime, but amazingly, it doesn't happen when that is running! Hilariously, it does happen with the resulting video :D The only way I'm able to show it is by recording with my phone, which I've uploaded here:

    Im using a 14 inch M1 Pro Macbook and a 32 inch 4k external connected over displayport (caldigit TS3+)

    Can't find out where this shortcut is bound to

    I need to enter diacritics to take notes in my discipline, and one of them is "`" plus a letter. Somehow, however, when I press "Option+`" in order to enter the compose mode and add it to a letter, I switch to the next window of the current program. In System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts, the shortcut to do this is a) disabled and b) bound to "Control+`". I have searched around a bit, and I can't find any reason why this should still be enabled as a function. I switched my language to German to better immerse myself to learn the language, so I feel it may have something to do with that. I would appreciate any help fixing this since currently, I need to copy and paste the special characters from somewhere.

    Cannot Share Folder from MacBook Air running macOS Monterey

    This was something that I could do easily in my old MacBook Pro running High Sierra. I just want to share a few folders in my own local lan so my wife's Windows PC or an Android TV Stick connected to the TV in the living room can access them.

    But I got "Invalid SMB Status STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED" warning from the Android TV stick running a file explorer named X-Plore when trying to connect the shared folder.

    When I tried to pinpoint the issue, I realized the MacBook Air could not even connect to itself via SMB. It does not even ask for a username or password. Please see the screenshot showing both "There was a problem connecting to the server" warning as well as my sharing settings.

    Any clues?

    Extending your equipment's service life

    Since our internal SSDs have a limited life and are not replaceable; and for M1 units booting from external drives is damn near impossible(https://tidbits.com/2021/05/27/an-m1-mac-cant-boot-from-an-external-drive-if-its-internal-drive-is-dead/).

    I have decided to use my internal drive as my OS drive and place my profile on an external SSD. You can go into the ADVANCED SETTINGS on your profile by right clicking on your user profile in Preferences >> Users & Groups. There you can change your home directory to your profile on your external drive. You can google on how to move your profile properly with all rights and permissions required.

    Thunderbolt 3 enclosures are recommended, if high drive read/write performance is a must for your use case. I'm using USB-C and have no real detectable latency issues. But for someone using FinalCut Pro with heavy bandwidth needs, I can see where a Thunderbolt 3 drive might be optimal.

    NOTE: Please make a local ADMIN account just for repair purposes and before attempting anything. I have had to use it once or twice. Especially if your profile drive is in an external enclosure and gets powered down. Your Mac will create a directory where your old volume mount was and you won't be able to use your profile again until you delete that directory and restart your computer so that it remounts under the same name.

    By the way, if you have access to a Mac at work you can create a user account there and map it to your external ssd and have all your programs a files at your finger tips with the security and privacy of not leaving anything behind; taking your external SSD with you.
